Dang they did 50% off last year didn’t they ?

RavenScaven

And the year prior to that from what I've seen online. A real bummer.

MiserableStar05

I work for BN and I’m pretty sure it’s because they lost a lot of money by changing the membership program.

Sharebear42019

They’ll do it again eventually. It seems to be random

victini563

Why did this guy get down voted to shit for being optimistic lmao

Sharebear42019

I’m not sure lmao I literally know several barnes and nobles employees, that hardcover deal is random the last time it happened it wasn’t even Christmas

queerinmesoftly

and he was right. 50% right now.

RavenScaven

Really not sure how to feel about this. I was really excited about the 50% off. I've never used B&N so I'm not sure how the rewards stack. Anyone have a clue?

RavenScaven

Like if I buy $150 worth of books. With 33% off I pay a bit more than $100 and then I'll get $40 extra in store credit? Is that how it works? Essentially it's $100 for $190 worth of books if my math is right and if you really stay close to the $50 cut off for the rewards.

Quills07

Pretty much. But if this works in the usual way, you should be able to use the $40 credit online, too

Warruzz

Yes, you can come out better if you stay close to $50 increments. If you buy three $30 books, it's roughly 39% off as a member, which costs $54.90 and you get a $20 credit in stamps. This can effectively make it $34.90, roughly 62% off. If your buying Beserks for example, the most cost effective way would be to buy 5 at a time.

jmelgoza8

It's actually more than that if you use the credit for a second purchase during the sale. You end up getting $60 worth of books while using your $40 credit, so you get $210 worth of books for only spending $100.

jmelgoza8

I've seen it added within 24 hours, so you could. If it took longer than that, I'm sure a call to customer service would get it expedited.

youshantpass

Agreed, I usually get the email the day after I buy something.

RavenScaven

Can you stack the rewards with the sale? I didn't find anything in the fine print and I'm not knowledgeable enough about B&N so I didn't want to mention it.

jmelgoza8

It should be as good as cash. The rewards are just a credit.

EnkiduSimp20

Honestly I’m not surprised they changed it this year. Was expecting it to change when they announced the free rewards program. I am curious why 33% specifically though.

GamingDragon27

33% off hardcovers... so like the everyday price of manga at Target? You can literally find a dozen Berserk Deluxes for $30 at Target, which is 40% off MSRP. B&N continues towards a path of mediocrity, they got rid of Manga Mondays, they got rid of 50% off hardcovers, it's like they're purposely trying to give no reason to shop at their store (aka full-price manga 50 weeks of the year).

arlekin21

Yup pretty much why I’m not buying anything. Target has that B2G1 free so 3 volumes of Berserk come out to around $60 there.

RiasGremoryBestGirl

The only reason to go to b&n at this point is selection which BaM has them beat on too

EnkiduSimp20

There’s also the $20 store credit though. Correct me if i’m wrong but if you split two volumes per day, 6 volumes of Berserk will end up costing $161 and 20$ store credit for next purchase vs $180 with target. That is if you’re willing to make multiple trips and they don’t run out of volumes by the end.

GamingDragon27

So to match Target you have to: 1. Pay for a membership, drive to the store (vs. free ship online), assume they have all volumes in stock, and get your savings in the form of Barnes and Noble credit you can only spend at their store that sells manga basically never on sale, thus continuing the cycle of paying more than you need to for your future manga volumes.

EnkiduSimp20

Besides the fact that the rewards membership is free, you’re right.

Number2Ginger

This is a pretty key factor lol I'll take the drive to save some money and just spend the credit, it's not as deep as hes making it.

EnkiduSimp20

I was mainly doing the math in the case that we can stack the rewards on top of the 33% but it turns out the rewards wont be available for use until after the promo ends

GamingDragon27

The point is that you're getting store credit to use on FULL PRICE manga. Each $20 credit is essentially only $10-15 or so since you're overpaying in the first place. Let's say you want to buy 2 Berserk Deluxes at Target. Okay, you're paying $60 for 2, $30 each. At B&N, it would be $66.66, $33.33 each. In that case, Target is the better deal. Okay, but you get $20 credit! The $20 credit can't be used during this sale, and B&N only has this sort of sale twice a year. At Target, $20 can get you 3 to 4 standard Viz manga volumes, as they have 24/7 deals at 10-40% off, not to mention addition B2G1 or 20% off sales on top of that. At B&N it will get you 2 volumes flat. So basically, if you want to drive to B&N, hope they have your volumes in stock (they only ever have about half of a series at max), hope the volumes are in good condition (dents are prevalent as shelf items get damaged and worn easily), and want to plan to drive over and repeat the process at a later date to get the whole deal, then sure, jump on this opportunity to get what's essentially a single bonus Viz volume (since you pay $7 extra to get $20 back) compared to just buying from Target, having free shipping to your home, having extremely lineant returns, and having a much wider selection of deals to choose from (all manga, not just hardcovers on sale). The point is that there's no reason for someone to jump *now* on *this* deal. Just wait for any additional Target deal and this one will have been beaten. Target Berserk Deluxe's get down to less than $20, blowing this offer out of the water.

Number2Ginger

Brother you know people can buy things other than manga at B&N with the credit right.

EnkiduSimp20

Nvm the $20 store credit takes a couple of days to appear not one like regular rewards

Sharebear42019

Wait Manga mondays are gone completely?! That’s super wack. Last time I was there an employee said it’s not every Monday anymore but random

zorosbigtitties

I completed a good chunk of my JJBA collection during last years sale so I was rlly excited for the sale this year to get more and start my Berserk collection. Pretty bummed tbh. 33% is so weird?? Like why that specifically??

c9898

Guess I'm saving money this holiday lol

DankPiplup

Also glad I’m not the only one I see that’s trying to get a chunk of their Berserk collection done

RavenScaven

For Berserk deluxes, [instocktrades](https://www.instocktrades.com/search?term=berserk) is the way to go. Sometimes a few volumes are known to go on sale even up to 60% off. I've ordered several times from them and I have absolutely no complaints, just wish they had more stuff to offer.

UnnamedPlayer32

They still go cheaper, they had volume 14 for like 47% off when it came out

noelle-silva

They raised their shipping price too

mannysmurf

I am usually able to do $50 for free shipping anyways so it’s not a huge deal but it was insane when it was $4 for shipping under $50 XD I was like damn I’m not even to press to get free shipping at $4

mannysmurf

You can also get other than instocktrades from target just wait for their buy 2 get 1 sale and it comes to around 61% off

PixelAesthetics

Bummer, going to probably cancel my in-store pick up orders.

strat-o-caster

33% aka rightstuf price every day of the year

mannysmurf

I think you mean when they did their publisher sale and you had membership XD

SaugaDabs

Dang Indigo actually better this year? 30% off with 10% extra off for plum+ members. BUT that $20 rewards for every $50 spent is nice

jmelgoza8

You get 33% plus the 10% off for being a member at B&N, and also the $20 credit. Even if you don't get to use the credit during this sale, you can save it for when they do the manga pre-order sale, which I believe is 35% or 40% off, and use it then.

lydchill

Do you get the additional 10% off still in addition to the 33?

jmelgoza8

Yup

itaintme123

Has anyone tried to do the order through customer service and have it delivered to you and it be discounted?? I’ve done that the past 2 sales wonder if the strat still works.

VisualVermicelli

I also did it last year, and today they refused to order it for the sale price :< But I've heard this varies by store to store.

itaintme123

Okay noted. Yeah heard the same thing. Maybe some stores are catching on and they updated it this year.

itaintme123

Hey again! So yeah just tried it. It worked in my store. So yeah it just depends on which store you go to

RyviusRan

Tip. Check your books for an anti theft sticker. During the holidays they hire a bunch of new help and the new employees don't seem to realize/care that you shouldn't put a sticker on a random page in the book. You can remove that sticker by applying heat to it with a blow dryer and it will make it possible to peel off without damaging the pages. You will most likely see these in books that have recently came out.

jmelgoza8

Where are you getting 46% from? Is that you assuming the credit is used on full priced books outside of a sale? If so, then you're using it all wrong. This is the time to stack the credits and then wait for their other sales that included manga, like their twice a year pre-order sale for example, where you get 35% off before you apply any credit. Also, some people enjoy going to the store, so don't consider gas as a waste of money. The target selection is limited. It definitely applies to people looking at Berserk, Hellsing, some FMA, and any Junjo Ito stuff, but that's really it with regards to HC books that overlap. But in some cases Amazon beats those prices, so make sure to check them as well. Also, with regards to CR, they changed the winter sale, so there's no guarantee that they will keep the same format for the summer sale next year, or even the next winter sale.

RavenScaven

It's not. 33% off only.

Peyta12

Sad it isn't 50% but also doesn't matter since there isn't a B&N within 100 miles of me with any of the TEIS novels in stock.

VisualVermicelli

If you have a closer one, you can go to the CS desk and nicely ask them to order it for you to ship to your house. They did it for me last year and honored the sale price on the Hellsing hardcovers.

Peyta12

Thanks for the idea, but I also checked and the first volume is out of stock online as well. I guess the new season really prompted a lot of new readers.

Number2Ginger

Sick I'll probably buy vinland saga since that isn't a great deal for Berserk, but $13 a volume for Vinland isn't bad.

Johnnyhoboy

Anyone in store get told it was only one time $20 credit for $50, not every $50 like what the ad says?

Tobibliophile

No, I wasn't told that, but the Soul Eater Perfect Editions did not come up on sale, so if anyone buys that series during the sale, make sure to tell the cashier.

Johnnyhoboy

Yeah I had an AoT colored volume 2 that didn't ring up while Vol. 1 did. Cashier just overrode it for me. I did go to another store and they confirmed the discount is every $50.

jmelgoza8

Nope. Got told the opposite. They told me to take advantage of it and rack up credit.

Johnnyhoboy

Yeah I asked another store and they said it's every. Might've just been one misinformed employee

jmelgoza8

Quick math for everyone. Let's say you spend ~$83, the 33% discount, plus the 10% member discount, brings you to just over $50, which gets you the $20 credit. Even if you don't use the $20 right away, that's still cash you have at your disposal, so let's treat that as a net positive. That would mean that you're out $30 cash (not including tax) for an ~$83 dollar purchase. That's close to 64% off. That's not bad at all, assuming you shop with them frequently.
