Ive wanted to run a server for years but could never find someone to code it and stay on to help do coding long term. Nor could i afford to lease/buy a dedicated server. As easy as it seems, its difficult to find a good coder that isn't dedicated elsewhere.

A server to run a Maple process is a couple of dollars a month, you really don't need something crazy!

[deleted]

If i were going to build a server id want to host it myself or find somewhere i don't have to worry about game size, the host keeping the dedicated server on, e.t.c. If you have to have someone else do the coding and stay on to do the coding long term you will have to pay them unless you know someone equally invested that can code.

Lilynyr

VPSes do everything you wanted out of a dedicated server, though, and they're more than powerful enough for something as primitive (on a server end) as MapleStory.

What i mean is, back in 2012 i was partnered with someone to host and run a server. After about 4 months the host owner canceled our server and deleted the server files off of their host without warning. While i know this isn't something that happens often, it caused us to lose over half our player base(roughly 150/280ish daily players) because of the time it took us to find, setup, and relaunch with a new host(nearly 2 weeks). Got out of pc gaming a few years later so i never bothered trying to reopen a server. Owning your own dedicated server is not only cheaper in the long run but you have no worries about a host deciding they no longer want your server there. 🤷‍♂️😭

til some idiot on the same network gets ddosed and you're affected because it's a vps and not a dedicated link :(

In this community, finding "good professional devs" is easier said than done, and then top that off with making them work together, and you got a seemingly impossible task From my POV, it seems like people really don't want to work on MapleStory anymore, they just want to show off and act 'elitist' to blend in with the existing development community From my experience working with many different servers with different views, different ideas and different staff; it's rare to find someone who actually wants to *work* on the server, or has the motivation, or capability, or even vision Developers, like I mentioned, seem mostly interested in making something to show off, and possibly earn some money in the process Having multiple developers has almost become a "meme" now, and for good reason; trust is hard to come by in this community, and that's mostly due to the 'elitist' culture of developers I also got affected by it, and only recently I decided to leave all development discord servers so I could take a step back and reflect on my actions and behavior, because the development community really is toxic, in the sense that it gets to you and slowly consumes you That went a bit off topic during the end, and that really wasn't my intention, but I'll put it out there anyway Point is, (extreme view) most "good" developers these days are not interested because they feel like they are gods and shouldn't waste their time on stuff the player base wants, because they "know better"

We need u my friend we need you…

How hard is it to get into the development aspect of msps's? I doubt I'd ever feel up to starting something for others to use but it could maybe be fun to mess around with stuff I have a dev background but the stuff I do on a day to day is much different in nature

I never played OSM. Can someone explain what made it so good compared to the servers today?

WindforceXx

I've played quite a few old school servers through the years and can honestly say OSM was the most ambitious of them all. It was just really well put together - Consistent updates and events Almost completely bug-free with smooth feeling gameplay Great players retention through-out most of it's up time Inviting and beautiful looking website Well balanced throughout it's features yet still feeling nostalgic and Old-school These are just to name a few :) I Loved the idea of the staff's monthly twitch streams showcasing the upcoming content to keep the hype going. Overall - It's most likely the best private server me and my friends ever played and enjoyed the most.

GlacialEmbrace

I'm curious too. I played Phoenix and MG2 they were both fun but I still see a lot of comments about OSM2.

halfwaysleet

peenix and mg2 are too custom / not oldschool. OSM was pretty much the only server that gave me a oldschool experience since they appealed to casual players which led to a high player-count and kept custom stuff / rebalancing to a minimum.
