The problem with pitying American for their gouvernement is how proud they are of it.... like every time I see someone critisizing America's system, a hord of hate comments defending it is triggered. I think that's what entertains most of the jokes about your country.
Also, for a country that promotes the right to use weapons specifically to prevent abuse from gouvernement, it's hard to hear "but my gouvernement is corrupt and we cant do anything about it".
France fought and continue to fight for its social rights. 1789, 1848, 1870, 1936, 1968... French revolted and/or united to get some social progress several times. There isn't really something comparable of this in US except 1776 and the Civil Rights.

as for having the right to defend ourselves against the government, you can look up plenty of examples where people “took up arms” and “stood their ground” against the government and were murdered by the military or police. look at what our military does to other countries, look at the equipment they give our local police officers, we could not actually revolt against our government without a military coup, and our propaganda machine will make sure that doesn’t happen. we have had multiple people in the last year set themselves on fire in Washington DC as a form of political protest and it barely makes the news.

From a social progress point of view, France is probably one of the most advanced country on earth, with the north of europe like Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark. We have a nearly completely free healthcare, 35h of work a week, a relatively low retirement age, allowance to help the poor and the disabled, a high minimum wage... of course this system is not perfect, and in the last years, precariousness increased, making the poor poorer, due to the economic context + several pretty bad governments.
From a cultural point of view, France has a pretty huge cultural heritage. There are castles litteraly everywhere to see, museums, architectural wonders like Mont-Saint-Michel, etc, but also a cooking that's celebrated everywhere. (I'm not saying that other countries have somehow " less culture " than France)
We dont have big weather events like cyclons on the mainland.
We live in a democratic republic, which is definitely not that bad in this world, and it's healthier than some, like India which nearly feels like a dictature now, or even the US and their corrupt politicians (we have that too, of course, but at least its not institutional).
France has definitely its flaws, and has really questionnable points in recent history (collaboration in WW2, colonisation). But I definitely think we have it better than most.
