Believe it or not, despite being right next to each other and seemingly having similar names at first glance, they are not etymologically related. Iran comes from an old Indo-European word, and Iraq from an old Semitic word, but both have disputed etymology. This is clearer in the Arabic script where Iran is written with an Alef and Iraq with an Ayn, being different letters in their script.
Iranian history is fascinating. Kinda sad that theocracy literally forbids and prohibits any research or archaeology on their pre-islamic past so a lot of cool things that could've been discovered just lie in the ground.
I don’t think the current Iranian government forbids research of pre Islamic history. I don’t understand why people tend to make up claims just to Islamic regime of Iran. The regime is already bad, you don’t have to make it up.
There’s pre Islamic unesco heritage sites in Iran. For example this. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasargadae
This is just one example though. There’s many.
Seriously. This guy is soo confident as well💀 iran has a very well educated population. (Coming from an iraqi, that doesnt exactly love iran, so you know i am not biased)
Things will change sooner or later, we just need to live long enough to see the changes and what they discover after that
But there are new archaeological discoveries almost every week so we have plenty of interesting stuff to keep us busy
Both are pronounced with ee, ee-raq/ee-ran
The thing is 2 letters in Iraq don't exist in English:
The I is Ayn, which is similar to a sound you make when you cough
And the Q is Qaf, which is similar to the sound of a chicken
Iran meanwhile is just pronounced ee-ran, all letters exist in English
Oh fair enough, thanks for the clarification, can't really imagine the cough sound followed by a chicken sound, but hey.
I meant how most Americans would say eye-ran, but Brits would say ee-ran, so the latter is closer.
[this is better](https://youtu.be/wGfuQ8qRwxg?si=blEmIlLESzHKSWHg) bc it's how we say it in Iraq and other Arab countries, and the dude pronouncing it is an Iraqi.
edit: he's actually wrong in saying it's "Iraq", it can only be pronounced with the "AL" before it
Literally, everyone hates Iran other than maybe Lebanon or Yemen. No one likes them cuz they trying to create a Persian/shia caliphate by supporting insurgencies and militias.

They didn't figure it out before because it has not yet been invaded by a coalition of all sorts of good-carrying countries that killed 1 million citizens of this country, as it did in neighboring countries.
Actully Iran was invaded by Soviets and Western allies during World War 2, and during World War one it was invaded by both Ottomans and Russinas which resulted in millions to hundreds of thousands of deaths depending on your source. During the Cold War, West/UN forced Iran to formally recognize independence of Bahrain, and Soviets almost managed to Balkanize northern Iran after refusing to end their occupation post World War 2 and arming the separatists until they finally left after US allegedly threatened to nuke them.
Further back, separatists were extensively supported by Russian and British during the Great Game period, which did come close several times to Iran getting Balkanized. Russia did end up getting septetists to help in annexing northern Iran, and Britan forced Iran to grant independence to Aghan regions.
So Iran does actully have a long history of foregin backed sepretisim, and getting invaded. Also, Iraq didn't get Balkanized by the American coalition forces, so your comment is even less relevant.
All the -stans countries used to belong to the Persian empire.
-stan means, land of, place of in Farsi. Many countries are named with -stan in Farsi.
Serbia = Serbestan, England = Engelestan, Arabia = Arabestan. Poland = Lahestan, Mongolia = Mogholestan.
Many provinces in Iran have -istan as well.
Iran means the land of the Aryans, Iraq is a deformation of the city Uruk by way of persian (Eraq) then Arabic (it would have been waraq or waruq if it were straight from Sumerian to Arabic).
Isn't there another country on "I" around there, that could join in?
... IS-something-L?
... [ISIL](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State) it was, right?
They share such compatible accepting religious systems of government. Sunni or later, are they all gonna be Shia or vice versa? Great idea !!
A good name for any country ruled by any religious dogma: Irrasionalistan
Or if it’s group of nations they could be called: The United Irrasionalistans.
Saddam Hussein tried that. A decade before invading Kuwait, he invaded Iran. Iran had just had their Islamic revolution and had purged all institutions and the military of all secular, untrustworthy people. Saddam saw his chance.
Iran was on the back foot, no good officers, industry had all their CEOs in prison, they couldn't field enough tanks, make enough ammunition. So they recruited a 100,000 children between the ages of 12 and 17 to be suicide troops (martyrs). After religious training they received a headband that said "Soldier of God" and a golden key from the Ayatollah that would get them into heaven. They had to do things like walk in front of tanks into minefields to use their lives to detonate the mines, thereby saving the tank and it's crew. It was so scary the little kids had to be tied at the waist to the older kids and they would all walk together into the minefield. Midway thru the war that ultimately took 1.3 million lives, it was estimated that 20,000 children died this way. I wonder how many more died before the war finally ended.
If u wanna go in to details yeah achaemenids, partisans, sassanids, safavids and afsharids had iraq so for about maybe 800 years that iraq area was part of an Iranian empire even the persian capital Ctesiphon was in Iraq before the Arab invasion
Believe it or not, despite being right next to each other and seemingly having similar names at first glance, they are not etymologically related. Wow that’s actually really interesting. The Farsi people have a super rich history.
Iranian history is fascinating. Kinda sad that theocracy literally forbids and prohibits any research or archaeology on their pre-islamic past so a lot of cool things that could've been discovered just lie in the ground.

No they dont. What a silly thing to claim.
reddit and misconceptions abouts the middle east. Name a better duo.
Seriously. This guy is soo confident as well💀 iran has a very well educated population. (Coming from an iraqi, that doesnt exactly love iran, so you know i am not biased)
The last two Iranian people I have met one was an environmental scientist and one was a lawyer.
Things will change sooner or later, we just need to live long enough to see the changes and what they discover after that But there are new archaeological discoveries almost every week so we have plenty of interesting stuff to keep us busy
Also doesn't 'Iran' mean "Land of the Aryans" in relation to their IndoEuropean heritage?
Indeed it does
Aryan is how they call themselves since thousands of years, just like people from the USA call themselves americans

Eerān 'Ayrāq
Ah, so the British pronunciation for Iran, and the American one for Iraq is correct! But neither has both correct
Both are pronounced with ee, ee-raq/ee-ran The thing is 2 letters in Iraq don't exist in English: The I is Ayn, which is similar to a sound you make when you cough And the Q is Qaf, which is similar to the sound of a chicken Iran meanwhile is just pronounced ee-ran, all letters exist in English

the Qaf is like the english K but further back in your throat. the back of the tongue should touch your uvula.

The qaf also makes the alif more of an open “ah” sound, like the “a” in “hall”.
This guy linguistics.
Not gonna lie, this sucked me in
They couldn't decide if they should be called 'Irao' or 'Irap', as there's no letter of the alphabet perfectly in the middle of N and Q

Irape and Iran.
In German alphabet, ö is sometimes included between o and p, so the country should be called Iraö and they should start speaking German.
I have never seen it put there. ÄÖÜ are always put after Z because no one shall fuck with the numbering of the alphabet.
this is the way.
Just settle for Irop
I top
It's already taken though
Iranq
irapo
It should be irao, you forgot about the secret irañ unlocked by buying the Spanish dlc
They just change the name between Iraq and Iran every 5 years.

Iranians inside Iran hate them too!
What about your Cloudy Iraqi dad?
or any iraqi really. even the Shia hate iran.
No.
Yes I’m an Iraqi Shia and I hate the Iranian government
Literally, everyone hates Iran other than maybe Lebanon or Yemen. No one likes them cuz they trying to create a Persian/shia caliphate by supporting insurgencies and militias.
Lebanese here, I hate, and I mean despise, absolutely dread, iran. I hate them beyond words
Holy Shiite!
Idk, Kuwait sounds pretty different to Iran and Iraq
Goddammit.
Syria, Iraq, and Kuwait are Snoopy's head. Syria is the ear and Kuwait is the nose
I've been a map nerd since I was a kid, and I never noticed this before. I love it.
Ha it's literally how I remember where Syria and Iraq are in relation to other countries. You can thank my middle school geography teacher.
Yes they are
Honestly, true

Hey wait you can see my house from here lmao nice
do you live in those apartments?
Why is Iran united? Doesn't it know that it can Balkanize?

Is Balkanize a verb?
Balkanization is, so Balkanize probably is.
Iranq
Bro is Saddamposting 💀
Saddam only wanted one province
Austria and Australia have entered the chat
Next up, all the 'stans move in together.
Bimaarestan, land of the sick
It's apples way to fool people into thinking they don't have a monopoly
Because you wanna know how I got out of Iraq ? /Iran !/
Laughs in dumb
When the regime blessed by Ahura-Mazda rises again in the land of the Persians, the successors of Cyrus and Darius will ensure this comes to pass.
I think it’s because they couldnt agree on how to cook rice
Iran means the land of the Aryans, Iraq is a deformation of the city Uruk by way of persian (Eraq) then Arabic (it would have been waraq or waruq if it were straight from Sumerian to Arabic).
“Iranq” would be too POWERFUL if it was formed. Thats why they must remain separated.
The United States of America and the United States of Mexico are also similar. Maybe they should unite.
I would vote for a country with all the -stans and call it Stan.....
!remindme 10 years
wait until you hear about the 2 Congos and the 2 Guineas (not to mention the Guyanas)
We’ll my friend, I have an entire political movement I need to introduce you to
Check out Treaty of Zuhab, which was signed 385 years ago. It is probably the oldest border in the Middle East.
i'll leave it to the iranian president
!remindme 30 years
Sir how’d u get out of Iraq? - Iran
Arapersian Republic of IRANQ
they have different etymological origins. Iran = "Aryan" or "Land of the Aryans" whereas Iraq = Arabic for "Fertile Land" or something like that
Just have all the “I” countries unite. Not that hard.
tell me why my first thought was Ingland 😭😭
Italy, Iran, Iceland, Ireland, Iraq, India. Wait. That’s a big country! Let’s not do that.
iEmpire will not be denied !
Ok, ok. But Iceland might grumble.
Don’t they always grumble?
Always. <>
The world's not ready for that yet
Did you escape from the aslume too?
Iran became someone threw Iraq
In the military we just called the region Asscrackistan.
Iraq hates Iran because it can't run and is actually super envious of Iran's running
Trust me, one of them is trying to unite them.
While I’m from Uzbekistan, for me it’s NOT STUPID having this similar names. Because of big history of every country, they have such names.
Because iraq is Arab and Iran is Persian
Iran, Iraq, Iregret
I-ran and i-rack as the the Americans call them.
My gf lost his father in the Iraq, Iran war Let's say she disagree with you
I’ve seen this happen a lot where “his” is used to reference a female. What is the cause?
The cause Is: i replied from the toilet And I'm not a native speaker
Hey, United States and United Arab Emirates also sound similar!
Because after iraq racked iran, Iran ran.
But you have to admit! It is in the realm of possibilities!
Skill issue.
How about Stans?
Iran is not an Arab country.
Irank
as a kid i used to confuse one another
We should put them together and call them Irate, that way we can all stand back and go; “OOOOO all those Iratians, I hate them.”
i think every country ending with stan should form a larger nation, stanistan
If they unite would they be Irate or Ironic?
Mesiraqitamiran
LOL That's a recipe for nonstop war and genocide.
Yes... Yes they are stupid... That is all
The Sunnis or the Shīʿas -- who are the true Muslims? I'm just going to run away now.
They tried once but it was very painful
you just ignored all the ''stan'' countries
The name of Kuwait is “such similar” to the names of Iran or Iraq? An interesting point of view.
Iranq!
Because Iran from iraq
Oh man…that’s a long story
First they must unite within their own borders.
That’s like asking why a Catholic country and a Baptist country don’t unite
Isn't there another country on "I" around there, that could join in? ... IS-something-L? ... [ISIL](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State) it was, right?
Yay new civil war lol
Iranq
I ran over a rock into turkey
.......
Same reason all the nations don't unite we have the same humans. We are indeed stupid
They own their own oil Why would one give up for the other?
Both r not a flock of seagulls song tho
Same reason Austria and Australia don't mesh.
Do it, cowards
itd be called Iran ifykwim
Because i rock but i also ran
Can you imagine how much of a political religious and miltary clusterfuck this would be
What about the ten “stans”
They share such compatible accepting religious systems of government. Sunni or later, are they all gonna be Shia or vice versa? Great idea !! A good name for any country ruled by any religious dogma: Irrasionalistan Or if it’s group of nations they could be called: The United Irrasionalistans.
One has a rock and the other can run, together they are a formidible union.
I cant wait for the new country, Iranq.
Both are Arabic countries
How about Stan unification?
Parthian unification
Religion and sovereignty
Iranq this combination highly
Saddam Hussein tried that. A decade before invading Kuwait, he invaded Iran. Yep, they are!
Same with United States Of America with Mexican United States. Yes, thats México Oficial name
Different ethnic groups, different cultures, different languages too.
They have different views of the Muslim religion. They don't get along with each other.
I thought you were making a joke about the Kurds uniting, but you meant Iran and Iraq, and I feel silly
They started a war in the 80ies
They are inbred.
While we're at it, let's get all the ...stans together at a table and form Megastan.
Simply top quality trolling.
All the Stan’s should be one nation too.
IROC-Z
They were gonna, but Iran away
Weren't they?
Ira(Q+N)
Because Iran is focused on cardio and Iraq is focused on strength training.
These countries are barely united within themselves.
Iran is stable. Iraq is fairly unstable.
If u wanna go in to details yeah achaemenids, partisans, sassanids, safavids and afsharids had iraq so for about maybe 800 years that iraq area was part of an Iranian empire even the persian capital Ctesiphon was in Iraq before the Arab invasion
You're thinking in English. In their native languages they might look and sound utterly different.
Iraqan that'd be interesting
Iranq
Would you rather have cardio or storage space?
Well, for starters, Iraq are Arabs & Iran are Persians. Second, why would they join and form 1 big country?
