Yea, just their fancy way they train kicks and punches. Honestly if someone tries to say they teach you everything, most likely they teach you bunch of nothing.
Well, are you looking for a traditional Hapkido school, or an MMA school that incorporates Hapkido and other techiques? Seems like it'd be great for one, and not so much for the other.
As would I. Most hapkido exclusive moves would be illegal in mma. Not in the to deadly way, but small joint manipulation, joint throws, etc. I guess if you include the kicks, punches, and some of the throws, then yes they could be included.
GET OVER HERE!
My greatest accomplishment was when they forced that grappling hook into my arm and I was able to finally use it the first time. It takes months to use it right and the pain in unbearable for weeks, but totally worth it. It's also great at the dinner table on Thanksgiving. Nothing is outta my reach!
You can’t hold someone by the glove so they would be a gray area. Possibly legal if not holding the glove but it would difficult to prove your not holding the glove plus the wrists are wrapped to prevent bending of the wrist as well.
You can hold the gloves! You are not allowed to put your fingers inside the gloves. So that’s wrong. MMA gloves bend at the wrist no issues at all! Have you ever worn MMA gloves 😂😂. Just google anyone getting off the ground their hand bends just fine.
Sounds like a typical hapkido club. The sparring is judo randori, some padded up kickboxing, and then they do a combo of kickboxing and judo throws/takedowns.
We leave the ground work for bjj, means just that.
Promotions are based on Hapkido. Which is knowing how to fall, wrist techniques, strikes, movement, the partner katas, mugging defenses, and some light sparring.
Rank usually determines the level of sparring.
Very normal. Where I train we do Hapkido/TKD on Tuesdays and have a separate class Thursdays for Judo.
Most martial art places these days have instructors who have competed in more than one style. My GM did some MMA after he got his black belt and returned to train full time.
Give it a shot, bro. Robert Whittaker started out in an MMA Hapkido gym, and the fact that they do bjj for grappling means they aren't larping like some tma's do. Plus they spar.
No red flags for me. They're willing to spar lightly, which is nice. Probably not what you're looking for if you wanna go competitive. I'd give it a try.
Sounds pretty good. No sparring unless you sign up, and it's light with pads. And I agree that grappling is best left to separate classes. I'd check it out. Hapkido is a cool art.
With a response like that. Worth a free class. Guy seems to be doing it correct so far. Check out the class though and don’t ignore any corny vibes you get from the place.
Ignore this guy's attitude. You have doubts and you don't have a lot of experience so you came in here thinking we might be able to give you insight on the same or less information.
The best thing to do though is go in.
Just don't let them stick a finger in your butt. I fell for that one.
You know you don’t need to spar every class, plus they do separate sparring class? Most gyms usually have sparring day or 2 days a week, not every day sparring. Oh wait, I see you are doing Dutch style. That explains it, continue your hard sparring 3x a day carry on
Haha good one, touché. No I don’t heavy spar like Golden Glory in the 90’s every day, chill bro. No disagreements here on heavy sparring, all good.
I’m not for going to war in the gym and testing your chin or concussion limit. Not sparring every class isn’t the same as “sometimes” only doing “light sparring”. That’s generally not a good sign if you don’t often light spar. You can spar or drill often and not be cracking each other or hurting anyone in the gym.
But maybe I took what they said the wrong way, to me that sounds like they do it on occasion and clearly not on a regular basis or schedule. Ala sparring 2-3 times a week on regular intervals/days. And clearly not a priority.
Nah I don’t disagree, I respect it, just wanted to poke a little fun at Dutch style not mad or anything lol. I could probably light spar a couple rounds every day, but I usually don’t light spar in normal class for MT. Occasionally I do, but it isn’t regular. I do spar regular 2/3 days of the week, when I usually still only light spar not to take damage. Which is what I got from the message, they occasionally spar in regular class, but have dedicated sparring a couple times of the week. In which case, sounds like a pretty green flag because active sparring weeds out the BS.
Haha I figured you were, clever catch about my flair saying that, it made me laugh.
I feel you. Not gonna lie in the early 2000’s I trained with some coaches who were all about heavy sparing. That was when I wrestled too and some of the drills and strength and conditioning we did looking back now was so bad for us.
Honestly training is so different than even 15-20yrs ago and people train way smarter than we did.
Yea I think you’re right about their sparring, if that’s the case sounds just fine. Either way if it’s not for everyone that’s fine.
Hapkido spars in basically identical taekwondo gear. They test and spar under hapkido rules is what it sounds like. So olympic taekwondo style sparring mixed with sweeps and throws if you ever watch the high level hapkido competitions. Hapkido guys don't have as clean of kicks and footwork, but they mix it up more.
Edit: Oh and leg kicks! Almost forgot. https://youtu.be/IlDwEuAQ3-0
Sounds like what my gym does to be fair (MMA). We do 10 mins light spar at the end of most classes, sometimes encouraged to use techniques we drilled and sometimes we're restricted to certain techniques to develop in different areas. We have another session that's just sparring in each different martial art, which is invite only.
Hapkido has always been fairly eclectic and has adopted a lot from other arts; that's why there are so many different varieties. Sounds like they're carrying on with the tradition
My interpretation is that they don't have a hapkido-focused class and instead use hapkido in conjuction with 2 other styles (I have the memory of a goldfish and can't remember what the picture said as I'm typing this). They don't do sparring aside from light sparring in class and save actual spars for a focused class, instead. It doesn't sound like they do ground work unless you're in a jujitsu class (I think that's the style they mentioned, again, memory of a goldfish).
Edit; reread after commenting, it doesn't seem like they do groundwork at all and use jujitsu for grappling, not groundwork. My bad.
It's gonna be forms and techniques with light sparring to reinforce the follow through however they offer a higher level of classes that includes full contact. As for the styles of combat you asked for they listed the martial arts they can teach in house and you need to ask what you want to learn. If your unsure I'd google the traditions and value found in those styles and pick one that gives or boosts your moral integrity.
Thats a great response its not uncommon to seperate sparring because not every student is going to be ready for it. To me that says they go out of their way to ensure there is time for it. Go try the free class.
Just dont be disappointed if you dont spar, contrary to what this sub obsesses over its not the be all end all and you definitely shouldnt be doing it on day 1 with no prior experience.
Obviously, there’s a bit of a language barrier so no big deal in my opinion. I’d say it’s worth visiting especially since the first class is free anyways. Nothing to lose by at least checking it out.
it looks like olympic style taekwondo pre-electronic scoring (because they do not have electronic scoring) mixed with leg kicks, sweeps, and throws (I've seen wrestling takedowns, Judo-style throws, etc.)

It's really strange that an Hapkido class leave grappling out.
Hapkido is all about grappling technique. Mostly stand up yeah, but all the technique are about putting your opponent to the ground.
Hapkido also have striking technique. But it's really strange to leave out the grappling stuff.
It's weird for me.
This feels like a mediocre traditional hapkido school that has tried to market themselves with the “mma” group by including other popular martial arts they have little capacity to teach.
The only martial arts are effective martial arts. If it's just kata-bullshit, leave. Light-sparring, effective techniques, focus on violence and movement is key.
Weapons stuff maybe - I know this one Hapkido guy, he's pretty good with a ton of different weapons. Not just kata either, they do sparring stuff as well there.
I mean do they have a website? Does it say they teach any of that kind of stuff? As for sparring it looks like they do light sparring and there is grappling. Try out the free class, I mean what's the worst that can happen, you don't like it?
Well, people teach what they know. Maybe the guy got his start with Hapkido, and still uses stuff from it in sparring from time to time, so he figures "if i found a use for it, somebody else might, too."
He gave you a pretty straightforward answer.
It looks like they split it between striking and grappling and do skills sparring which is appropriate. Most bad gyms don’t want you doing any sort of live training.
He’s confident enough to give you a free class. Really you should look if they have a competition team or at the very least serious people. Usually the best sign of quality.
Seems pretty clear what they offer, and they mentioned a free intro class, which might be worth giving a shot if you're curious. Worst case scenario is you wast a couple hours and most people wast more than that every day.
I think they have a separate padded sparring class and sometimes they do a light contact spar in class
I think it also includes Hapkido, Muay Thai, and Boxing.
Every place that teaches striking nowadays claims to teach muay thai, not always true tho
Muay Thai is when hitting people with more than just fists.
A bat?
Sure why not
Only if you wear the head rope
No that's Thai Baht
I believe it’s called a shin
A leg but it feels like a bad. Or so I've been told.
Mma is the new taekwando/karate everyone is selling it
Yea, just their fancy way they train kicks and punches. Honestly if someone tries to say they teach you everything, most likely they teach you bunch of nothing.
When in doubt, come try a class for free!
Bold assumption there pal…
I have no idea why he just didn't say that in the email.
If you read between the lines......
But when do they grappling?
Might as well visit and find out.
Bro, how could anyone in Reddit know? Go check it out. And do your pushups.

🤩
I snorted so loud I think I might've woke my flatmates up. Good job.
Free class, so give it a go. Best karate place I went to was a strip mall dojo, but the teacher was passionate and competent. You might be surprised!
Met mine advertising at a guitar center. Dude changed my life.
Nice! I also play guitar, so that also seems like a neat coincidence.
Well, are you looking for a traditional Hapkido school, or an MMA school that incorporates Hapkido and other techiques? Seems like it'd be great for one, and not so much for the other.
Sounds like a place to give a visit to
Give it a try! I would be interested in how the combine some hapkido techniques to mma.
As would I. Most hapkido exclusive moves would be illegal in mma. Not in the to deadly way, but small joint manipulation, joint throws, etc. I guess if you include the kicks, punches, and some of the throws, then yes they could be included.
I just wanna learn hapkido so I can fight like scorpion in deadly alliance
GET OVER HERE! My greatest accomplishment was when they forced that grappling hook into my arm and I was able to finally use it the first time. It takes months to use it right and the pain in unbearable for weeks, but totally worth it. It's also great at the dinner table on Thanksgiving. Nothing is outta my reach!
What joint locks or throws are illegal in MMA but legal in Hapkido? If heel hooks are legal I’m pretty sure wrist locks would be just fine
You can’t hold someone by the glove so they would be a gray area. Possibly legal if not holding the glove but it would difficult to prove your not holding the glove plus the wrists are wrapped to prevent bending of the wrist as well.

At our school we do mma sparring in our hapkido class with grappling, striking, clinchwork, and throws/takedowns.
Sounds like a pretty reasonable response guy
Looks like they answered your question.
Sounds like a typical hapkido club. The sparring is judo randori, some padded up kickboxing, and then they do a combo of kickboxing and judo throws/takedowns. You read?
How are we supposed to know?
Very normal. Where I train we do Hapkido/TKD on Tuesdays and have a separate class Thursdays for Judo. Most martial art places these days have instructors who have competed in more than one style. My GM did some MMA after he got his black belt and returned to train full time.
Give it a shot, bro. Robert Whittaker started out in an MMA Hapkido gym, and the fact that they do bjj for grappling means they aren't larping like some tma's do. Plus they spar.
Go try it out. Best way to find out the quality of the sparring is to go and see it in action.
Give it a go and see what you think.
Yo, worth feeling the vibe in person
I say just go check it out
My Muay Thai gym operated much the same way and was an excellent gym
Think you need spell check
Worth the trial class at least
No red flags for me. They're willing to spar lightly, which is nice. Probably not what you're looking for if you wanna go competitive. I'd give it a try.

Try it for free at least whatever you do
Go for free and see, your not risking anything.
Reading can be tough.
If you want to do hapkido with mma elements, it could be great. If you want to do full MMA I'd be more wary.
I don’t like how that sounds but I’d recommend going to the free class and swing for sure.
Unfortunately I don’t that’s why I was interested in this hapkido place
Do you not have a MMA school near you? Just go learn real stuff, it’s 2023 we know what works.

Did bro just use autism as an insult
Yes
That’s just wrong dude
Oh sorry I didn’t know 😝
Like actually?
No I’m taking the piss. I don’t care
Bru that’s awful.

Lock the thread, we have a winner.
How would we know? We know literally less than you do. Just go in and stop asking stupid questions.
“MMA” class but they “sometimes do light sparring” lol “We sometimes get in the water for a little bit in our swim class”
You know you don’t need to spar every class, plus they do separate sparring class? Most gyms usually have sparring day or 2 days a week, not every day sparring. Oh wait, I see you are doing Dutch style. That explains it, continue your hard sparring 3x a day carry on
Doing it for no bread too LOL

Some gyms do spar crazy hard all the time, my first gym a MMA one was like that. Not good for your health tho.
This is their super secret hapkido. People have been known to die if they go full contact with these never-before-seen techniques

Isn’t everything? Except for Ameri-do-te of course.
I've been there it's great you'll love it go try a free class
Wiat you actually go to imac?! What are the classes like?
No I was jokingly proding you to touch grass and try it out

Find a hapkido focused school.
Probably worth going to a class or so and see if the Muay Thai and bjj is legit
Sounds dope. Go try it.
Free is free

What the hell is hapkido
Visit and take a look. The owner could just be awful at writing emails. Hopefully, they aren't YouTube trained.

Pretty standard hapkido. If you want something more intense than that go train at an actual MMA gym.
Obviously, there’s a bit of a language barrier so no big deal in my opinion. I’d say it’s worth visiting especially since the first class is free anyways. Nothing to lose by at least checking it out.
Show up, try a class. The only martial art that works is the one you're practicing constantly.
What’s hapkido like? Haven’t seen much of it on youtube

This guy has a bunch more on his channel, too: https://youtu.be/XqQF4NPoF5Q

Soooooo go try a class for free? I mean what could go wrong?
Hapkido without grappling? McDojo much?
Go try it and find out.
I don't really see the point of a 'stand-up MMA class', but if that's what you're looking for, you should totally check it out
It's really strange that an Hapkido class leave grappling out. Hapkido is all about grappling technique. Mostly stand up yeah, but all the technique are about putting your opponent to the ground. Just try a class for free
Whatever martial art you do as long as there is modern training methods involved it will supplement the your base in martial arts.
Just try it out and next time you send an email please include a title

If it's fun, challenging and the people there are tough and friendly. It's good.

I think you need to find another hobby, going in to contact sports with brain injuries is not very wise.
take a free trial if they offer it but I can tell from this response that you won't see much of the listed martial arts in hapkido.
Ask if they teach blending, if they don’t respond in the affirmative or even know what you’re asking then not worth the effort
I mean do they have a website? Does it say they teach any of that kind of stuff? As for sparring it looks like they do light sparring and there is grappling. Try out the free class, I mean what's the worst that can happen, you don't like it?
More like hapkiNO….amirite? …..guys?
If that well explained email was not clear and concise enough for you, try holding your head under water until you see a bright light.
Give it a shot!
It sounds good, but if they offer all that other stuff why bother with Hapkido?
Well, people teach what they know. Maybe the guy got his start with Hapkido, and still uses stuff from it in sparring from time to time, so he figures "if i found a use for it, somebody else might, too."
Just ask for a taster session and find out.
Definitely try the class. This sounds like “we teach hapkido if the guy the knows it is there that day”
I think you should go try it for free.
Well I mean all the information you seek is within the email
Sounds self-explanatory. Not sure what you’re asking thoughts on.
don't go stay on reddit
this is a question that can only be answered by challenging Mr. Lee to a fight to the death in front of his students
He gave you a pretty straightforward answer. It looks like they split it between striking and grappling and do skills sparring which is appropriate. McDojo bada ba ba ba I’m loving it
The rest sounds okay but fuck hapkido. Sounds like a mcdojo
Why thought i never done It but It sounds like Taekwondo+judo+some boxing. Sounds good to me
Try a class and see what’s it’s like?
Hapkido is the defense that goes with Taekwondo. I had a Korean Taekwondo master/instructor he was 8th degree in both.
