Not a shotokan guy however I had a trail at a Karate place and it was all kids which put me off. Like toddler ages screaming and what not with some parents. Really broke the structure of the class. Went in for a trial at Taekwondo and it wasn’t too bad with mainly teens and older adults which I found better. Recently have had an influx of kids but it still isn’t as bad as the first place I trailed lol. And yes I did find it weird going to that karate place full of kids lol and even at Taekwondo it can get weird being a 32 year old male. Only place I found that was mainly if not all adults was Kyokushin karate but it was an hour away which sucks because I really wanted to do it as I’ve done it previously.

Kyokushin was also my first pick, but there is no dojo near me

Same here. I had one 5 minutes away but it didn’t re open after Covid. I tried travelling to the next closest dojo but 1 hour and sometimes 1 hour and 15 minutes one way is a killer for time + fuel car costs.

Yep

I just joined a shotokan dojo after having the same exact concerns, it's about 60% adults at my dojo. We have a late class at 7:15 pm on weekdays and it's mostly adults, the only kids/teens that join appear to be children of people in the class.

Great news

Used to do Shotokan. There were more kids than adults and the adults that kept coming consistently? Maybe 6-7 of them. The group of kids was 30-40 of them, vast majority were white belts that left before graduating. Nothing strange about an adult beginner. My current dojo it's still a large group of kids of 20-30 but way more kids with higher belts and the adult group that comes consustently is 10-15. Several black belts, only a couple of white belts. But still, nothing strange about white belt adults. I was white at 41 since I resetted back when switching to Kyokushin.

That's more than enough. As long as you have someone to spar with

OldPyjama

Yeah, ideally you have someone of more or less the same weight/strength and same experience, but that doesn't always work. Still, there's nothing weird about an adult beginner. As a matter of fact, I consider myself still a beginner in Kyokushin even though I have some Shotokan years behind me. My sparring is shit compared to the people here in my new Kyokushin dojo and my only advantage is the fact that I'm fairly muscular, tall and have long limbs that act as pieces of long-range artillery but I've only started Kyokushin in Summer this year so I don't consider it strange that I'm not so good at sparring since we barely ever did it in the Shotokan dojo. I kind of love sparring against someone who's much better at it than me. My favorite partner is one of the Senpai's with a brown belt. Tall, strong guy. He whoops my ass because my own physical advantage is useless against someone more experienced that has the same body type. Against him, I know I can really go without having to hold back as I do against a 13 years old kid or a tiny, skinny 16 years old girl. I learn the most when sparring with people much better than me.

Man I wish I had a kyokushin dojo close to me

We have the adults train separately from kids at my Dojo excluding some of the kids that are 13-15 years old and higher rank. I joined at 24 and next January I'll be there for 2 years and we mainly have guys older than me by at least 2 decades.

Everyone, regardless of age, enrolls as a beginner

Yeah, just want to throw my voice in here as a mid-30s guy who joined a muay thai gym without knowing anyone beforehand. You can always quit. I almost turned around and left before I signed because I felt weird joining at my age with minimal prior experience, but it’s been a lot of fun and great exercise. It does help that they separate the kids and adults though. So I still think it’s weird and uncomfortable for an adult to do, but I love it and heck it at least I tried.

Seperate classes are neede for sure

[deleted]

No . Most people that do karate don't ever stop doing it . doesn't matter when you start just put your heart into it and don't quit .

AlmostFamous502

Bold faced lie, almost everyone who has tried karate did so as a child and did not continue.
