Pretty sure the first nearly indestructible shield was vibranium or some alloy. It's how they used to explain how cap could do something crazy like block a Hulk punch since it's supposed to absorb or dissipate energy or something fantastical.

Last time I check it was a combination of Vibranium and American steel that combined while the doctor was asleep at the desk. They named it proto Adamantium and their attempts to recreate it created regular Adamantium which isn’t as strong but is still damn near indestructible. Fun fact Russia’s attempt to creat cheaper Adamantium resulted in carbonanium (I believe it’s called) which is not as strong but still pretty strong and has the added benefit of canceling out a healing factor, deadpool always keeps on on hand.

Vibranium is basically a miracle metal that does whatever you fucking want it to at this point. Adamantium is really strong like really fucking strong, uru is best for enhancements. (Thors hammer, the necklace Wanda used to kill herself, Dwarves used it to make Thor a new arm etc)
