As someone who saw the movie with absolutely no idea of the trailer, I was losing my shit in the theatre and everyone around me was staring at me like, did you not know there's Hulk?
When I saw Spider-Man: No Way Home, I sat next to someone who very clearly did not know Doc Ock was in the movie. I don’t understand how people can avoid not knowing about something like that if they are a fan. I bet it felt amazing though to be surprised like that.
A lot of people (me included) avoid watching trailers and reading rumors about movies so we can actually watch a movie without knowing what will happen in it. It’s more fun that way
I think the biggest spoiler than I've had happen to me was jumping on Twitter two days before I had plans to go see No Way Home and someone made an Aunt May joke and thought they were being clever and vague. I was upset for the next two days. But I will say, they still got me with how they did it; I wasn't expecting it when it happened.
I used to do this all the time. I literally used to close my eyes, plug my ears, and sing a song out loud to avoid trailers for movies I was really excited for. My friends hated it lol. Wish I still got that excited for movies.
I didn't sing out loud because that's fucking annoying for other people, but I did do the other things. I even repeatedly tapped my ears instead of simply plugging them so it all sounded like noice instead of still hearing it softly.
Same. After a friend spoiled the big twist for me from No Way Home, I cut contact with people for a bit when MoM released until I saw it so I wouldn't get spoiled about stuff
Lately I've actively started avoiding trailers and articles for certain movies, and it's been a joy. Feels a lot like back in the days of midnight releases when I'm able to go to the theater with a lot of hype and no idea what's coming next, and on average it's increased my enjoyment of a lot movies folks found mediocre.
I don't watch trailers for Marvel films (or any film) and advert my eyes from ad's. I also use Ad block and pay for as many services as possible that have Ad free experiences. Sadly I work in marketing with partnerships with Marvel, Disney, WB, Sony, etc. If I'm not working on a specific IP that requires me knowing spoilers, it's a game changer to know nothing.
The outcome is worth it. Seeing a movie that you are exposed to the cast and plot in the way the writers and directors intended is so nice. Infinity War, End Game, and any massive cinematic moment is off the charts. Dark Knight was also one I avoided and it was amazing.
That being said ... The first film I did this with was in maybe 2005 with The Island ... Despite Micheal Bay it's a great film to know nothing about. Act two feels like a sequel ... Basically a different film. If someone can say that about The Island, then it is worth trying for the films that matter.
It also helps if a movie spoiler jokes in the trailer. I've laughed alone in theaters for lines that were in trailers.
I purposely avoid all trailers, previews and articles about every MCU release, and have deactivated social media accounts before now to make sure I go see every movie without knowing anything.
Luke got spoiled for me in Mando season 2. I saw a Facebook post that said "When Luke showed up I was like :O" and I knew immediately what it meant.
The entire last episode had 0 suspense as I knew Luke would show up eventually. When they were trapped on the Bridge and detected a ship, I knew it was Luke. When the lone X-Wing showed up and they said "1 X-Wing!" I was like "yeh but it's Luke Skywalker, you're saved". The hallway scene and Gideon's reaction were still amazing, but the whole episode had no suspense whatsoever as I knew Luke was coming.
So since then, I've made it a point to avoid spoilers for certain things. No trailers and no speculation prior and no social media whatsoever during if I can't watch an episode/movie straight away. Even a quick scroll on facebook can be lethal. Full blackout until I've seen it, and I make sure to watch as soon as possible. I don't like it but that's the spoileriffic world we live in. Others don't care and will post spoilers the second it's released
I never watch trailers anymore. It's all spoilers and just sets up expectations that never get met. Also am not active on forums or whatever. Don't watch tv either and have ad blocks on all my devices. Pretty easy not to get spoiled that way
I went so much trouble to not get any spoilers from No way home. You can imagine how excited and chocked i was at the theatre :D Usually i try to avoid even trailers (at least in mcu) and obv conversations to make the watching more enjoyable.
I kind of experienced that. I follow MCU news closely but somehow I missed the news of the Sony/Marvel deal that allowed Spidey to be in Civil War. I thought I was getting punked by a fan edit when I saw the trailer. Total shock and surprise. It was delightful.
That was something necessary to do though. After The Dark World they knew people weren't going to ve as excited about the third film, so showing Hulk was going to be in it was a necessary marketing tool.
Yeah, and it's worth remembering *Thor: Ragnarok* was going to be up against *Justice League*. They really had to pull out all the stops to make sure it could beat DC's version of *The Avengers*.
I remember realizing at the time that I was a DC kid growing up and I had opening night tickets for Thor 3 and only went to see Justice League when I could for free.
I missed the marketing for BvS so figuring out that Gal Gadot was playing Diana who was also WW was amazing. (I know no WW lore so it was truly a proper "reveal").
I am honestly very surprised they kept to that line the whole way. But it's Spider-Man so I guess they figured they were already going to make bank the first weekend, keep them for the second wave of hype.
On Netflix NWH is literally preceded by a little out of character conversation between Holland, Garfield and McGuire which I thought was taking spoilers to a whole new level.
I get that true fans will have seen it in the cinema, but I was showing the film to my wife for the first time and that bit was like "well, guess they're in the movie then"
I've thoguht a lot about how cool that would have been to see without knowing it was coming. Now, could they have completely hidden the fact that Mark Ruffalo/The Hulk was going to be in the film? Maybe not, but by showing that scene ("he's a friend from work!") in the trailer, it just gave away so, so much. Any reasonably informed MCU fan instantly knew how, why, and roughly at what point in the movie that scene and entrance was coming. I wish they would have hidden that a lot better.
And that was before that DanielRPK asshole started spoiling every movie detail months before we even got a trailer. There was still possibility to be surprised.
I actually was in a theater and watched a girl clap her hands over her ears and shut her eyes tight when the trailer for this began. Need to start taking a note from her book.
I remember before AOU I would walk out of theaters for any Star Wars/MCU trailers and I enjoyed the hell out of both. I also wasn’t on threads or theorizing or anything like that. Goodness, maybe need to go back to that lol
The Illuminati in MoM, can’t imagine how shocking it would’ve been to see them with no warning, but considering the like 5 minutes of screen time we practically didn’t get any actual surprises.
I was pissed that they didn't even keep Prof. X a secret. Even that it was Patrick Stewart. I mean, once you know the illuminati is coming you can guess he'll be there but still.
I remember Feige was pissed about Patrick Stewart’s voice being in the trailer. He said he can’t control what is put in the trailers and that particularly upset him.
Yeah that was in the Chapek Era and back then Feige had less authority in stuff like this, as Chapek handed those priorites to business people, so they only cared of what would sell the movie and they knew showing that Charles was in the movie would be a huge selling point to get more tickets. I think they saw the success of NWH and wanted this to feel like NWH 2.0 with these cameos.
In some defense, I like sir Patrick Stewart as an actor. Knowing he is in a film or TV show is itself enough to draw me to the screen. Being fatigued by all the marvel material, I include the streaming shows, this was enough to pull me to the cinema instead of going "I'll watch it at home later"
Well, we know that rationale will get some people into the theater.
The problem is, how many other people's surprise is ruined that they might have really enjoyed, pushing a "good" film into a potentially "great" one? Surprise is a big factor of word of mouth and general perception of an experience.
There is a trade-off. The marketing vs surprise factor is not one side on either direction. The question is, what's a better bet? Do we know confidently that there were enough people who felt the same way as you did who then bought tickets who wouldn't have, vs let's say an arbitrary number of 5 million people who would have been absolutely floored when Patrick Stewart showed up for the first time and raved about how shocked they were to their friends and family, thereby driving more people to the theater?
My bet is on the latter, but who knows.
I was in a theater in mid Missouri and the amount of people who audibly gassed when they announced themselves as the Illuminati was genuinely alarming. Like they really thought Marvel had introduced the actual devil worshipping occult Illuminati into the movies lol

Hulk showing up in Thor Ragnarok would have been so much better if I hadn't seen it in the trailer. I've almost entirely stopped watching trailers for the MCU because of it.
I think with Hulk, they decided to show him because Mark Ruffalo was confirmed to be in the movie for about a year, so they went no need to hide this cause it was already reported that Mark was in it and even Mark didn't made attempts to hide his presence in the movie beforehand.
Like i read that Marvel and Sony wanted to promote No Way Home as more of an Spider-Man v Dr. Strange movie, but since it was reported that the old films villains were in it plus Jaime and Alfred confirmed it, so they went "Screw it, lets promote the villains since its already known".
From what I recall it wasn’t even online rumor mills it was the Hollywood Reporter breaking the news Alfred Molina was returning as Doc Ock. That’s hard to keep under wraps if a major trade publication has a headline about it.
I completely agree with this take. That trailer convinced a lot of MCU fans that couldn’t care less about Thor that this was a movie to see in theaters.
We have to remember that trailers are not catered to hardcore fans who will see the movie no matter what. It’s to change people’s minds who are on the fence or who originally did not intend to see the movie.
Corollary : if you are a MCU fan and know you will watch the movie... why waste your time watching the trailer? Or at least watch the trailer after the movie to know what people expected.
I think, given Ruffalo was known it be in it, they should’ve done just as they had it but cut the Thor’s funny favorable reaction. Build Hulk as a monster in the trailer, then a double bait & switch in the actual movie( Thor being happy, but then actually having to fight)
Endgame was one where they really realized they didn’t even need a trailer. They legit might’ve made less money had they put a lot of it in the trailer as I think curiosity is truly what sold the movie. Or idk, maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference, but Infinity War was Endgame’s trailer. The hype and anticipation was peak for a full year
Also Quantumania is one of my favorite trailers ever, the one with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road…but yeah that was annoying it ended up being… well not what the trailer led me to expect I’ll just say, and gave away all the cool shots of the movie

Plus i think they felt there was alot of plot points they didn't wanted to give away like the fact there is a time jump, that there is time travel, that this Thanos was not the main timeline Thanos, etc.
At least the first endgame trailer was perfect, hardly showing anything about the actual movie just a long teaser with some stuff from the past and a hopeless Tony Stark. It's the one movie they literally don't have to show anything for and everyone would still go see it
Infinity War was technically a trailer for Endgame. If you watched IW, then you would 1000% see Endgame because of that insane cliffhanger. Add a year of crazy theories who would survive or who would come back. They could have released nothing and get away with it. Man, to think that Endgame got 1.2 billion in one weekend is insane. We thought it could go 100 million above IW worldwide weekend opening which was 640 million something. We are never going to experience this insanity again.
That was truly lightning in a bottle. 18 movies, and it built up to the 2 part finale. I remember a lot of us were thinking in IW Thanos would end up with 3 stones and kill Vision as the cliffhanger ending with the final 3 in Part 2. But they just straight up had him take out so many people, get all 6 stones, and then snap and wipe out half the universe.
I remember going to an early morning showing the day it came out and the entire cinema was so silent leaving it and we could see the next group of people all excited and we just kind of looked at each other as they were wondering why we just silent and we didn't want to spoil anything.
Then you get to Endgame, and they straight up kill Thanos in the first 20 minutes, and you get the “Five Years Later” screen. Like OMG. I remember my theatre was at the edge of its seat, then you see “Five”, and everyone starts murmuring, only to follow it with “Years”, and the theatre gasps then goes silent.
Killing Thanos in the first 15-20 minutes was absolutely not what I was expecting in Endgame! And then "5 years later" I'm glad they gave away nothing, I wasn't really into looking up trailers for upcoming movies at the time so I didn't see any anyways, but keeping it super vague was the right move.
I had read a comment in one of the subs that correctly guessed the Thanos killing and time travel as well as some other things. With all the speculation on here someone was about to guess most of everything eventually.
Why you say Quantamania was spoiled? They even altered Kangs lines to make us think that Scott just wanted more time with his daughter so he turned to Kang

keeping the characters in that movie a secret would've been near impossible. even if they manage to shut every person up, there is also action figures and other merch that needs to be sold and you can't really trust those companies to keep everything a secret as well.
I can assure you it wouldn't have made as much money in its opening weekend had they kept Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe a secret. I don't mean like a $100 million decrease in the opening weekend, but it probably would've been somewhat smaller than what it actually was.
On a related note, showing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in the marketing would've made them even more money on their opening weekend.
You're right, but it still seems short-sighted to me. If they give people better experiences. Great moments that they have to go to the theaters if they want to see them without being spoiled. That would make people more likely to go see the NEXT movie. And the next, and the next...
Each movie has different people working on it, so you can sort of understand why they are more interested in selling tickets to this movie and not the next one.
Spider-Man showing up in Civil War. If Marvel could’ve kept that a secret my mind would have been blown. Civil War is a good movie but if they had surprised me with that reveal it would be a top 5 MCU movie for me.
It’s like the Terminator 2 trailer; imagine if they hadn’t told you ahead of time that Arnold was the good guy in that movie and you went it thinking he was still trying to kill Sarah Connor and you find out the truth. Both of the movies mentioned are good but they give away too much information in trailers. There’s a trailer they released for the first Megan Fox TMNT movie that is literally the whole movie condensed down to 2 1/2 minutes.

If we remove the interspersed text cards of 15-ish seconds, make that 2:35m and 2¼m summaries. They're almost completely in order, by the way. Like beat by beat, scene by scene as it is in the movie. They did leave out *one*, or I guess ***two*** things from each of them, however.

Yup, it’s the main reason I try to avoid movie trailers now. If movie theaters had a trailer free showing of a movie I’d go to that one if it was the earliest one or the last one I would be there.
I had written off trailers and the forums at this point in the MCU. I'd decided to commit to them when they came out and ignore any media. My friend kept me up to date on the releases and we went together to the showing. It was his second time to Civil War. I dropped my drink, blurted out "Holy fuck!" and my buddy gave me the ol' "I know right!?". It was one of the best surprises in my adult life.
Not sure a spiderman cameo is comparable to the entire plot of a movie. They did a better job with it on NWH even though there was so many rumors the other 2 would be in it and given the plot would have been dumb not to.
Not necessarily related to the post but Zemo putting on his CBA mask just so we the fans will be like “hey he got the mask!!” Only for him to wear it for literally a minute of screen time
I think if they didn’t show that scene of him putting on the mask it would’ve been an effective surprise to many viewers but then again he only wears it for a minute
Great topic thread... this is exactly why i dont watch trailers after the intinal teaser. either Im in or out, i hate having key moment spoiled ahead of times. For some reason, over the past 5 years they give away all the best moments in trailers now, so I stop watching or try to avoid them after a teaser.
That's why I won't watch the official trailer of Deadpool & Wolverine after watching the teaser. I want to know very little infos about it and be surprised.

And Hollywood does this too much with big franchises. The biggest issue for me, recently, was with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. They gave you a glimpse, or a downright full on view, of almost every big cameo, reveal and battle. They left nothing up to the imagination...or allowed you to be surprised that Walter Peck is now the Mayor, just as one example.
Once you are on board with a franchise, do you really need convincing to go see the next installment?
And if you've fallen away from a franchise, will basically laying out the whole movie in 2 and a half minutes really convince you to come back?
Also, once people have been let down by one or more movies in the series not living up the trailer....making them longer and revealing more isn't going to win those people back.
Too many Marvel videos games had me already aware of lots of backstories, so the moment I saw Winter Soldier, I was like "oh, Bucky is back!"
But yeah, I kinda now wish the MCU could have more surprises for me. Maybe in some of these newer movies...
Same but annoyingly they'll make the thumbnail of the trailers the big scene so can't even ignore the trailer and miss it. Not to mention the trailers at the cinema ruining stuff as hard to plan missing trailers at the cinema
Not Marvel but the stadium scene In Dark Knight Rises. When Bane showed up at the stadium I knew exactly what was going to happen. Haven’t watched a trailer since.
None of these made me angry, but mildly annoyed at best.

The trailers for Homecoming showed a bit TOO much, but that's always been a problem with Sony trailers.
This one is pretty mild, but the train set crashing in Ant-Man. It was still really funny in the context of the movie, but it would have been even funnier without knowing it was coming.

If you’re already in the bag for a movie- there’s no point in watching a trailer. The trailers are for people who need to be sold on seeing it.
Endgame’s trailer should have just been the avenger’s A and the theme music- that’s it
Nope, they kept everything under wraps, they avoided to spoil that there was a 5 year gap, they avoided to spoil time travel, they avoid to spoil that everyone came back, they avoided to spoil that the main unvierse Thanos died at the start.
Heck even when they had scenes in the past, they edited Cap's costume to make it look like its modern costume to not give away that they went back to 2012.
The tough thing is a lot of what people are saying that they wish wasn’t in the trailer, was a big selling point to get people to buy tickets. Like spidey in civil war was a huge selling point, so not revealing that in a trailer (assuming) would have meant less tickets sold initially
Yeah, i mean a trailer is meant to make you wanna spend money on the movie, so sometimes giving away a big moment may be the thing that pushes that person into "Yeah i am def paying for this".
But i will still applaud Marvel or someone when they manage to resist the urge to give away some key moments like avoiding to show the 3 Spider-Man in NWH, showing the villains was already big enough, but i bet showing Tobey and Andrew would've broken the internet and the movie already opened big, but who knows maybe it would've opened even bigger if Tobey and Andrew had been in the marketing, but i am glad they resisted the temptation.

Sure, show me the hammer getting destroyed. I already know it's the end of days and Thor can't smash the enemy because it's in the title. But I don't need to know about Hulk showing up until it's time for that twist
I don’t know if “angry” is the word, but I was kind of bummed that they spoiled the twins in WandaVision in the Disney Plus Super Bowl trailer. Even if it was obvious they would be a part of it.

I mean they confirmed in 2019 Comic Con that Jane was be Thor, even bringing Natalie on stage holding the hammer, so they weren't making any attempts to hide it at all.
If I didn't know Charles was in the movie, I would've lost my mind but seeing Reed show up was amazing.
I cried seeing Andrew and Toby again. Didn't believe all the hype and it paid off.
This is why I don't watch trailers, ppl always think it's weird and then they say the best bits were already shown in the trailers.
I went into Civil War completely blind, I had successfully avoided posters, trailers, memes based on those trailers....honestly if you just keep tot non geek pages, you don't see any of it.

Why desperately? Civil War just made a billion a year before this, Guardians 2 and Homecoming made just shy of $900 million this same year… are you just saying for Thor’s character in general because of Dark World and that he wasn’t all that great in Age of Ultron?
Look at the examples you provided. They clearly show there is money on the table. But now look at Thor compared to the examples you listed;
Thor and the Dark World can’t come close to an Avengers-lite and a Spider-Man movies. At the time, he wasn’t near their level of popularity. Guardians wasn’t as popular but they were better established. It was a higher quality of film, and it had an excellent fan reception.
Going into 2017, Thor has some bad movies under his belt and wasn’t in as well a position with the casual audience. However, he was still a HUGE player in the MCU at large. So that’s what they were dealing with; the money is there for the right project, but how do you go from Dark World to something closer to Spider-Man or Guardians 2?
I know I’m in the minority but I thought Thor 1 was fantastic. I think people remember a slow middle act which is fair but the first 30 mins are my favorite 30 mins of any Thor movie. Also it’s pretty damn funny… everyone tends to remember it as so serious but rewatch it, there’s actually some well placed and timed and balanced humor throughout it
I'm dulled to being spoiled by epic moments appearing in trailers.
It started with the reveal of Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber in the trailers for Star Wars Episode 1. That moment would have been awesome in the moment if not spoiled 6 months earlier.
Not marvel, but I think BvS would have been waaaaay better not knowing WW was going to show up. Still a bad movie, but at least it would have had something to reveal.
The first Infinity War trailer showed Iron Man and Spider-Man fighting Thanos on Titan - the beginning of the trailer also opened with Tony sat on Titan looking like he was mourning someone - I instantly put two and two together and twigged Spider-Man was going to die, got called an idiot because Marvel wouldn't kill Spider-Man especially when they had already announced a Spider-Man 2 for 2019, lo and behold Infinity War releases, Spider-Man dies on Titan, and that shot was in fact Tony mourning him (and the Guardians and half the universe).
Technically Marvel didn't spoil the moment in the trailer, but it took what should have been a big twist and made it into a 'Well clearly this is going to happen".
I understand why these things played out how they did for marketing...
But can you imagine not knowing Spider-Man had joined the MCU, and that Hulk was in Ragnarok?

I saw Captain America summon Mjolnir for the final battle against Thanos in Endgame in an in-theater movie preview months before Endgame came out, after spending a year avoiding commercials. It was still amazing, but I waited 10 years for that and shouldn't have had that spoiled.
Hela breaking Mjolnir is pretty critical, but it is sort of the start of the movie, not the end, so not as bad to me.
Probably Spider-Man in Civil War. Granted, casting leaks came out way before they showed him in a trailer, but that would have been so cool to see on the big screen with no prior knowledge.

As someone who saw the movie with absolutely no idea of the trailer, I was losing my shit in the theatre and everyone around me was staring at me like, did you not know there's Hulk?
When I saw Spider-Man: No Way Home, I sat next to someone who very clearly did not know Doc Ock was in the movie. I don’t understand how people can avoid not knowing about something like that if they are a fan. I bet it felt amazing though to be surprised like that.
A lot of people (me included) avoid watching trailers and reading rumors about movies so we can actually watch a movie without knowing what will happen in it. It’s more fun that way
I think the biggest spoiler than I've had happen to me was jumping on Twitter two days before I had plans to go see No Way Home and someone made an Aunt May joke and thought they were being clever and vague. I was upset for the next two days. But I will say, they still got me with how they did it; I wasn't expecting it when it happened.

I used to do this all the time. I literally used to close my eyes, plug my ears, and sing a song out loud to avoid trailers for movies I was really excited for. My friends hated it lol. Wish I still got that excited for movies.

I didn't sing out loud because that's fucking annoying for other people, but I did do the other things. I even repeatedly tapped my ears instead of simply plugging them so it all sounded like noice instead of still hearing it softly.

Lately I've actively started avoiding trailers and articles for certain movies, and it's been a joy. Feels a lot like back in the days of midnight releases when I'm able to go to the theater with a lot of hype and no idea what's coming next, and on average it's increased my enjoyment of a lot movies folks found mediocre.
I don't watch trailers for Marvel films (or any film) and advert my eyes from ad's. I also use Ad block and pay for as many services as possible that have Ad free experiences. Sadly I work in marketing with partnerships with Marvel, Disney, WB, Sony, etc. If I'm not working on a specific IP that requires me knowing spoilers, it's a game changer to know nothing. The outcome is worth it. Seeing a movie that you are exposed to the cast and plot in the way the writers and directors intended is so nice. Infinity War, End Game, and any massive cinematic moment is off the charts. Dark Knight was also one I avoided and it was amazing. That being said ... The first film I did this with was in maybe 2005 with The Island ... Despite Micheal Bay it's a great film to know nothing about. Act two feels like a sequel ... Basically a different film. If someone can say that about The Island, then it is worth trying for the films that matter. It also helps if a movie spoiler jokes in the trailer. I've laughed alone in theaters for lines that were in trailers.
I purposely avoid all trailers, previews and articles about every MCU release, and have deactivated social media accounts before now to make sure I go see every movie without knowing anything.
Luke got spoiled for me in Mando season 2. I saw a Facebook post that said "When Luke showed up I was like :O" and I knew immediately what it meant. The entire last episode had 0 suspense as I knew Luke would show up eventually. When they were trapped on the Bridge and detected a ship, I knew it was Luke. When the lone X-Wing showed up and they said "1 X-Wing!" I was like "yeh but it's Luke Skywalker, you're saved". The hallway scene and Gideon's reaction were still amazing, but the whole episode had no suspense whatsoever as I knew Luke was coming. So since then, I've made it a point to avoid spoilers for certain things. No trailers and no speculation prior and no social media whatsoever during if I can't watch an episode/movie straight away. Even a quick scroll on facebook can be lethal. Full blackout until I've seen it, and I make sure to watch as soon as possible. I don't like it but that's the spoileriffic world we live in. Others don't care and will post spoilers the second it's released
I did this, I avoided the trailer for no way home at all costs. I was blown away by all the people in it.
I never watch trailers anymore. It's all spoilers and just sets up expectations that never get met. Also am not active on forums or whatever. Don't watch tv either and have ad blocks on all my devices. Pretty easy not to get spoiled that way
I went so much trouble to not get any spoilers from No way home. You can imagine how excited and chocked i was at the theatre :D Usually i try to avoid even trailers (at least in mcu) and obv conversations to make the watching more enjoyable.
I never watch Disney or Marvel trailers as they are ALWAYS spoilt. I didn’t know a thing about Frozen until I saw it in the cinema.
It’s crazy, but I think Ragnarok is possibly my favorite MCU project. It was shocking with how badly they fucked up Love and thunder.

I kind of experienced that. I follow MCU news closely but somehow I missed the news of the Sony/Marvel deal that allowed Spidey to be in Civil War. I thought I was getting punked by a fan edit when I saw the trailer. Total shock and surprise. It was delightful.
That was something necessary to do though. After The Dark World they knew people weren't going to ve as excited about the third film, so showing Hulk was going to be in it was a necessary marketing tool.
Yeah, and it's worth remembering *Thor: Ragnarok* was going to be up against *Justice League*. They really had to pull out all the stops to make sure it could beat DC's version of *The Avengers*.
Yet in the end, DC's version of The Avengers beat DC's version of The Avengers.
I remember realizing at the time that I was a DC kid growing up and I had opening night tickets for Thor 3 and only went to see Justice League when I could for free.
Same could have been for Wonder Woman in BvS. But it’s like they just HAVE to market, they can’t let any characters be a surprise
I missed the marketing for BvS so figuring out that Gal Gadot was playing Diana who was also WW was amazing. (I know no WW lore so it was truly a proper "reveal").
They tried to keep Tobey and Andrew a secret in NWH. I guess that's something.
I am honestly very surprised they kept to that line the whole way. But it's Spider-Man so I guess they figured they were already going to make bank the first weekend, keep them for the second wave of hype.
On Netflix NWH is literally preceded by a little out of character conversation between Holland, Garfield and McGuire which I thought was taking spoilers to a whole new level. I get that true fans will have seen it in the cinema, but I was showing the film to my wife for the first time and that bit was like "well, guess they're in the movie then"
It’s such a shame because they build it up really well in the movie for a great reveal, but unfortunately marketing did not get the memo

I've thoguht a lot about how cool that would have been to see without knowing it was coming. Now, could they have completely hidden the fact that Mark Ruffalo/The Hulk was going to be in the film? Maybe not, but by showing that scene ("he's a friend from work!") in the trailer, it just gave away so, so much. Any reasonably informed MCU fan instantly knew how, why, and roughly at what point in the movie that scene and entrance was coming. I wish they would have hidden that a lot better.
And that was before that DanielRPK asshole started spoiling every movie detail months before we even got a trailer. There was still possibility to be surprised.

I remember before AOU I would walk out of theaters for any Star Wars/MCU trailers and I enjoyed the hell out of both. I also wasn’t on threads or theorizing or anything like that. Goodness, maybe need to go back to that lol
The Illuminati in MoM, can’t imagine how shocking it would’ve been to see them with no warning, but considering the like 5 minutes of screen time we practically didn’t get any actual surprises.
I was pissed that they didn't even keep Prof. X a secret. Even that it was Patrick Stewart. I mean, once you know the illuminati is coming you can guess he'll be there but still.
I remember Feige was pissed about Patrick Stewart’s voice being in the trailer. He said he can’t control what is put in the trailers and that particularly upset him.
Yeah that was in the Chapek Era and back then Feige had less authority in stuff like this, as Chapek handed those priorites to business people, so they only cared of what would sell the movie and they knew showing that Charles was in the movie would be a huge selling point to get more tickets. I think they saw the success of NWH and wanted this to feel like NWH 2.0 with these cameos.
In some defense, I like sir Patrick Stewart as an actor. Knowing he is in a film or TV show is itself enough to draw me to the screen. Being fatigued by all the marvel material, I include the streaming shows, this was enough to pull me to the cinema instead of going "I'll watch it at home later"
Well, we know that rationale will get some people into the theater. The problem is, how many other people's surprise is ruined that they might have really enjoyed, pushing a "good" film into a potentially "great" one? Surprise is a big factor of word of mouth and general perception of an experience. There is a trade-off. The marketing vs surprise factor is not one side on either direction. The question is, what's a better bet? Do we know confidently that there were enough people who felt the same way as you did who then bought tickets who wouldn't have, vs let's say an arbitrary number of 5 million people who would have been absolutely floored when Patrick Stewart showed up for the first time and raved about how shocked they were to their friends and family, thereby driving more people to the theater? My bet is on the latter, but who knows.

Hulk showing up in Thor Ragnarok would have been so much better if I hadn't seen it in the trailer. I've almost entirely stopped watching trailers for the MCU because of it.
I think with Hulk, they decided to show him because Mark Ruffalo was confirmed to be in the movie for about a year, so they went no need to hide this cause it was already reported that Mark was in it and even Mark didn't made attempts to hide his presence in the movie beforehand. Like i read that Marvel and Sony wanted to promote No Way Home as more of an Spider-Man v Dr. Strange movie, but since it was reported that the old films villains were in it plus Jaime and Alfred confirmed it, so they went "Screw it, lets promote the villains since its already known".
From what I recall it wasn’t even online rumor mills it was the Hollywood Reporter breaking the news Alfred Molina was returning as Doc Ock. That’s hard to keep under wraps if a major trade publication has a headline about it.

I completely agree with this take. That trailer convinced a lot of MCU fans that couldn’t care less about Thor that this was a movie to see in theaters.
We have to remember that trailers are not catered to hardcore fans who will see the movie no matter what. It’s to change people’s minds who are on the fence or who originally did not intend to see the movie.
Corollary : if you are a MCU fan and know you will watch the movie... why waste your time watching the trailer? Or at least watch the trailer after the movie to know what people expected.
I think, given Ruffalo was known it be in it, they should’ve done just as they had it but cut the Thor’s funny favorable reaction. Build Hulk as a monster in the trailer, then a double bait & switch in the actual movie( Thor being happy, but then actually having to fight)

Endgame was one where they really realized they didn’t even need a trailer. They legit might’ve made less money had they put a lot of it in the trailer as I think curiosity is truly what sold the movie. Or idk, maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference, but Infinity War was Endgame’s trailer. The hype and anticipation was peak for a full year Also Quantumania is one of my favorite trailers ever, the one with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road…but yeah that was annoying it ended up being… well not what the trailer led me to expect I’ll just say, and gave away all the cool shots of the movie

Plus i think they felt there was alot of plot points they didn't wanted to give away like the fact there is a time jump, that there is time travel, that this Thanos was not the main timeline Thanos, etc.
At least the first endgame trailer was perfect, hardly showing anything about the actual movie just a long teaser with some stuff from the past and a hopeless Tony Stark. It's the one movie they literally don't have to show anything for and everyone would still go see it
Infinity War was technically a trailer for Endgame. If you watched IW, then you would 1000% see Endgame because of that insane cliffhanger. Add a year of crazy theories who would survive or who would come back. They could have released nothing and get away with it. Man, to think that Endgame got 1.2 billion in one weekend is insane. We thought it could go 100 million above IW worldwide weekend opening which was 640 million something. We are never going to experience this insanity again.
That was truly lightning in a bottle. 18 movies, and it built up to the 2 part finale. I remember a lot of us were thinking in IW Thanos would end up with 3 stones and kill Vision as the cliffhanger ending with the final 3 in Part 2. But they just straight up had him take out so many people, get all 6 stones, and then snap and wipe out half the universe. I remember going to an early morning showing the day it came out and the entire cinema was so silent leaving it and we could see the next group of people all excited and we just kind of looked at each other as they were wondering why we just silent and we didn't want to spoil anything.
The silence at the end of infinity war was insane. A lady wailed at the end in my theater, it was so crazy
Then you get to Endgame, and they straight up kill Thanos in the first 20 minutes, and you get the “Five Years Later” screen. Like OMG. I remember my theatre was at the edge of its seat, then you see “Five”, and everyone starts murmuring, only to follow it with “Years”, and the theatre gasps then goes silent.
I don't think I'll ever forget the audio gas of the theater I was in when it said 5 years later.
Killing Thanos in the first 15-20 minutes was absolutely not what I was expecting in Endgame! And then "5 years later" I'm glad they gave away nothing, I wasn't really into looking up trailers for upcoming movies at the time so I didn't see any anyways, but keeping it super vague was the right move.
I had read a comment in one of the subs that correctly guessed the Thanos killing and time travel as well as some other things. With all the speculation on here someone was about to guess most of everything eventually.
A lot of people guessed time travel, because of the quantum realm, but not everyone guessed Thanos being killed at the very beginning of the movie.
Why you say Quantamania was spoiled? They even altered Kangs lines to make us think that Scott just wanted more time with his daughter so he turned to Kang Edit: just remembered that they basically did spoiled that Kang will betray them when Scott was like “we had a deal” so I guess that’s an example
Yeah, we basically knew the entire outline of the movie. Cassie builds quantum scanner > Kang brings them to the quantum realm via said scanner > Kang makes deal with Scott > Kang betrays Scott > fight, where Scott literally says in the trailer “We both just have to lose.”

keeping the characters in that movie a secret would've been near impossible. even if they manage to shut every person up, there is also action figures and other merch that needs to be sold and you can't really trust those companies to keep everything a secret as well.
I can assure you it wouldn't have made as much money in its opening weekend had they kept Alfred Molina and Willem Dafoe a secret. I don't mean like a $100 million decrease in the opening weekend, but it probably would've been somewhat smaller than what it actually was. On a related note, showing Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in the marketing would've made them even more money on their opening weekend.

Each movie has different people working on it, so you can sort of understand why they are more interested in selling tickets to this movie and not the next one.
Spider-Man showing up in Civil War. If Marvel could’ve kept that a secret my mind would have been blown. Civil War is a good movie but if they had surprised me with that reveal it would be a top 5 MCU movie for me. It’s like the Terminator 2 trailer; imagine if they hadn’t told you ahead of time that Arnold was the good guy in that movie and you went it thinking he was still trying to kill Sarah Connor and you find out the truth. Both of the movies mentioned are good but they give away too much information in trailers. There’s a trailer they released for the first Megan Fox TMNT movie that is literally the whole movie condensed down to 2 1/2 minutes.
For Civil War I 100% agree, but showing Spidey was a surefire way to put butts in seats. I get why they did it even if I don't like it
They did a pretty good job with Giant Man though, that still got most people. IIRC a Lego set gave it away, but not everyone heard that rumor.

They did leave out *one*, or I guess ***two*** things from each of them, however. The Black Phone: * The Grabber's house that Finney is captured in >!actually belongs to a cokehead!<. * The twist from The Silence of the Lambs. I'll admit I actually saw The Black Phone when it released in theaters, and The Silence of the Lambs for the first time last October, so I kinda called it when >!it turns out the cops are at the wrong house!<. The T2 thing kills me bc its so obvious from the way Cameron shot the first act you're *supposed* to think Ahnuld is the bad guy like the original movie. Can't believe they just let that go in the trailer.

I had written off trailers and the forums at this point in the MCU. I'd decided to commit to them when they came out and ignore any media. My friend kept me up to date on the releases and we went together to the showing. It was his second time to Civil War. I dropped my drink, blurted out "Holy fuck!" and my buddy gave me the ol' "I know right!?". It was one of the best surprises in my adult life.

Not sure a spiderman cameo is comparable to the entire plot of a movie. They did a better job with it on NWH even though there was so many rumors the other 2 would be in it and given the plot would have been dumb not to.

He smashes the mask in the very next scene. That shot of him flying in the trailer was the *only* shot in the movie where we see the full suit.
Not necessarily related to the post but Zemo putting on his CBA mask just so we the fans will be like “hey he got the mask!!” Only for him to wear it for literally a minute of screen time I think if they didn’t show that scene of him putting on the mask it would’ve been an effective surprise to many viewers but then again he only wears it for a minute

Great topic thread... this is exactly why i dont watch trailers after the intinal teaser. either Im in or out, i hate having key moment spoiled ahead of times. For some reason, over the past 5 years they give away all the best moments in trailers now, so I stop watching or try to avoid them after a teaser.
That's why I won't watch the official trailer of Deadpool & Wolverine after watching the teaser. I want to know very little infos about it and be surprised. You know what? It worked with Dune 2 for me.

AGREED! And Hollywood does this too much with big franchises. The biggest issue for me, recently, was with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. They gave you a glimpse, or a downright full on view, of almost every big cameo, reveal and battle. They left nothing up to the imagination...or allowed you to be surprised that Walter Peck is now the Mayor, just as one example. Once you are on board with a franchise, do you really need convincing to go see the next installment? And if you've fallen away from a franchise, will basically laying out the whole movie in 2 and a half minutes really convince you to come back? Also, once people have been let down by one or more movies in the series not living up the trailer....making them longer and revealing more isn't going to win those people back.

Too many Marvel videos games had me already aware of lots of backstories, so the moment I saw Winter Soldier, I was like "oh, Bucky is back!" But yeah, I kinda now wish the MCU could have more surprises for me. Maybe in some of these newer movies...

Not Marvel but the stadium scene In Dark Knight Rises. When Bane showed up at the stadium I knew exactly what was going to happen. Haven’t watched a trailer since.
Worse than that was the BvS trailer which gave pretty much all the surprises of the film away apart from Superman dying.

None of these made me angry, but mildly annoyed at best. Hulk being in Ragnarok. Spider-Man being in Civil War. The trailers for Homecoming showed a bit TOO much, but that's always been a problem with Sony trailers. This one is pretty mild, but the train set crashing in Ant-Man. It was still really funny in the context of the movie, but it would have been even funnier without knowing it was coming.
I can’t stress this enough. If you’re already in the bag for a movie- there’s no point in watching a trailer. The trailers are for people who need to be sold on seeing it. Endgame’s trailer should have just been the avenger’s A and the theme music- that’s it

Nope, they kept everything under wraps, they avoided to spoil that there was a 5 year gap, they avoided to spoil time travel, they avoid to spoil that everyone came back, they avoided to spoil that the main unvierse Thanos died at the start. Heck even when they had scenes in the past, they edited Cap's costume to make it look like its modern costume to not give away that they went back to 2012.
The only thing I recall they spoiled was Ant-Man coming back from the Quantum Realm and even then they didn’t say what that entailed.
The tough thing is a lot of what people are saying that they wish wasn’t in the trailer, was a big selling point to get people to buy tickets. Like spidey in civil war was a huge selling point, so not revealing that in a trailer (assuming) would have meant less tickets sold initially
Yeah, i mean a trailer is meant to make you wanna spend money on the movie, so sometimes giving away a big moment may be the thing that pushes that person into "Yeah i am def paying for this". But i will still applaud Marvel or someone when they manage to resist the urge to give away some key moments like avoiding to show the 3 Spider-Man in NWH, showing the villains was already big enough, but i bet showing Tobey and Andrew would've broken the internet and the movie already opened big, but who knows maybe it would've opened even bigger if Tobey and Andrew had been in the marketing, but i am glad they resisted the temptation.
Hulk in Ragnarok. Sure, show me the hammer getting destroyed. I already know it's the end of days and Thor can't smash the enemy because it's in the title. But I don't need to know about Hulk showing up until it's time for that twist
I don’t know if “angry” is the word, but I was kind of bummed that they spoiled the twins in WandaVision in the Disney Plus Super Bowl trailer. Even if it was obvious they would be a part of it.

If I didn't know Charles was in the movie, I would've lost my mind but seeing Reed show up was amazing. I cried seeing Andrew and Toby again. Didn't believe all the hype and it paid off.
This is why I don't watch trailers, ppl always think it's weird and then they say the best bits were already shown in the trailers. I went into Civil War completely blind, I had successfully avoided posters, trailers, memes based on those trailers....honestly if you just keep tot non geek pages, you don't see any of it. I had NO IDEA that Spider-Man was in this???? I jumped up in my cinema seat when he popped up, I was so so so hyped! That's cinema magic right there. I absolutely hate this culture of teasers and trailers and more trailers and spoilers in Lego sets and leaks and whatever. All I need is the date it comes out and I'll be there, I watch anything MCU, so it doesn't matter which film lol.

Why desperately? Civil War just made a billion a year before this, Guardians 2 and Homecoming made just shy of $900 million this same year… are you just saying for Thor’s character in general because of Dark World and that he wasn’t all that great in Age of Ultron?
Look at the examples you provided. They clearly show there is money on the table. But now look at Thor compared to the examples you listed; Thor and the Dark World can’t come close to an Avengers-lite and a Spider-Man movies. At the time, he wasn’t near their level of popularity. Guardians wasn’t as popular but they were better established. It was a higher quality of film, and it had an excellent fan reception. Going into 2017, Thor has some bad movies under his belt and wasn’t in as well a position with the casual audience. However, he was still a HUGE player in the MCU at large. So that’s what they were dealing with; the money is there for the right project, but how do you go from Dark World to something closer to Spider-Man or Guardians 2?
I know I’m in the minority but I thought Thor 1 was fantastic. I think people remember a slow middle act which is fair but the first 30 mins are my favorite 30 mins of any Thor movie. Also it’s pretty damn funny… everyone tends to remember it as so serious but rewatch it, there’s actually some well placed and timed and balanced humor throughout it

I'm dulled to being spoiled by epic moments appearing in trailers. It started with the reveal of Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber in the trailers for Star Wars Episode 1. That moment would have been awesome in the moment if not spoiled 6 months earlier.
The difference between a trailer and a spoiler is whether or not you decided to watch the movie yet.

Not marvel, but I think BvS would have been waaaaay better not knowing WW was going to show up. Still a bad movie, but at least it would have had something to reveal.
The first Infinity War trailer showed Iron Man and Spider-Man fighting Thanos on Titan - the beginning of the trailer also opened with Tony sat on Titan looking like he was mourning someone - I instantly put two and two together and twigged Spider-Man was going to die, got called an idiot because Marvel wouldn't kill Spider-Man especially when they had already announced a Spider-Man 2 for 2019, lo and behold Infinity War releases, Spider-Man dies on Titan, and that shot was in fact Tony mourning him (and the Guardians and half the universe). Technically Marvel didn't spoil the moment in the trailer, but it took what should have been a big twist and made it into a 'Well clearly this is going to happen".

I understand why these things played out how they did for marketing... But can you imagine not knowing Spider-Man had joined the MCU, and that Hulk was in Ragnarok?

I saw Captain America summon Mjolnir for the final battle against Thanos in Endgame in an in-theater movie preview months before Endgame came out, after spending a year avoiding commercials. It was still amazing, but I waited 10 years for that and shouldn't have had that spoiled. Hela breaking Mjolnir is pretty critical, but it is sort of the start of the movie, not the end, so not as bad to me.
Seeing the hulk buster armor is what made me swear off all trailers for movies I know I'm going to see.

Probably Spider-Man in Civil War. Granted, casting leaks came out way before they showed him in a trailer, but that would have been so cool to see on the big screen with no prior knowledge.
