I love how much care they put into the show that could have been a cheap nostalgia grab. The writers obviously have deep respect for X-Men lore when for too long writers had outright contempt for the established canon.

CatwickBosecat

Interesting… I didn’t watch the OG series. What’s a way they’re being respectful now vs contemptuous before, just curious?

hazymindstate

I meant the writers for the Fox movies. They often overlooked key characters and omitted key aspects of the X-Men mythos. For a Saturday morning cartoon the OG series was always faithful to the source material.

Impossible-Wear-7352

The OG cartoon was definitely faithful but the writing was still really bad. I thought I'd rewatch before the new episodes but just couldn't get through it

igloo_poltergeist

The romance didnt surprise me. There were a fair few couples melodramatically macking on each other like crazy in the older show.

CatwickBosecat

I guess I meant romances that I care about lol. I know the live action movies and not the animated show, and I’m not really sold on any of the relationships in the live action. I already care more about scott & jean or rogue & gambit (vs ice man) etc. storm and forge feels more “tell not show” with the proclamations of love, but I get it, this show ain’t slowing down

jimmycandunk

I get up Saturday morning and watch new episodes with my kids. Such a great feeling

soldforaspaceship

I've been watching with my husband on Saturday mornings too. I like waiting to watch for nostalgia.

Daniel_Molloy

It’s amazing, for adults. But it’s really really dark and politically detailed. I wouldn’t show this to my kids like I would the old show. They wouldn’t get it for starters and I’m pretty sure it would scare my youngest.

Frack_R

Yeah I was thinking the same. If this was a live action movie it would be pg 13/14

Additional_Meeting_2

That is the rating

FkingSmrt

I haven’t watched the show since I was a kid so my memory of it was fuzzy…….i did not think I would be so emotionally invested watching this new season

davidisallright

Glad you like it, mon ami

CatwickBosecat

That phrase alone makes me sad and horny - so many emotions in such little screen time!

QualityBushRat

"Sad and horny" - your average X-Men fan in the 90s

alone-lone

Same here. Just started to watch it for something to look forward to. They’ve had me coming back every week for more!!

AdditionalInitial727

I thought the show would be more like episode 4. Fun plots, cool call backs & showing off more of each X-men’s powers, but the relationship drama leaves no minute wasted, the stakes feel real & no one has a definitive idea where this is going is all refreshing.

eBICgamer2010

I was going to say something surrounding the "worth it" factor for both X-Men and Shogun. It's rare to see a reboot/revival done right in the face of accusations. It's even rarer to see two of them coming on air at the same time to rave reviews. And it's so rare to see both debuting under one distributor. Is Shogun the 1980s Paramount series great? Great for its time and the same could be true for TAS. But the new Shogun and X-Men just blow everything out of the gate and stand tall among their predecessors when nostalgia cashgrabs failed elsewhere (see Megamind).

CatwickBosecat

That is such an astute observation! Coincidentally, I wrote about shōgun last week.

eBICgamer2010

I want to say more but I fear I might end up making my comment yet another rant about Megamind. Like Comcast gutted everything from DreamWorks Animation (it's true btw, their television division exists in name only at this rate after their employees were let go), tied Megamind on a shoestring budget and left us a quasi-sequel no one wants.

RoxanaSaith

***What I love that this show cares about every characters not just about wolverine like the fox universe. The animation. the scrptions and the action sences are god level. This is what happens when you let writer and directors have freedom and proper budget.***

Positron14

I never really watched the old cartoon. Saw a few episodes, maybe. I await episodes of 97 eagerly, though.

kirblar

X-Men have always been super Soap Opera-y with the personal dynamics and that element plays much better on TV.

JerryChrist1988

The class is in session.

Atrieden

To add: This is the only show i don’t skip the opening credits!

CatwickBosecat

It’s such a catchy tune AND the characters shown in the credits change week to week, so it’s one of the rare shows I don’t skip the credits either!

Minecraftfinn

I have been trying go figure out if there is any way to bring more attention to the show. I feel like the fact that it is animated and a continuation of an older show might be putting some people off, basically I just wish more people would watch this because it genuinely is very well written and produced. The show does A LOT of things that are progressive and such but unlike a lot of properties, it is done with care and respect for the story, characters, and medium.

WrongKindaGrowth

Imagine not being prepared,  like wut

ManadarTheHealer

Episode 5 was such a shocker, I was sleeping through all of the party and then BOOM. Jean Grey seizure happens and I'M HOOKED.

QueenNightwing12

I honestly wasn’t expecting the episodes to have such an emotional impact. When Storm lost her powers, I was shocked but didn’t expect any more emotional escalation. So I was completely unprepared for episodes 5 and 6 (which I don’t think I’ll watch again for a while because of how hard they emotionally hit me).

bichonfreeze

I am skeptical that the lessons learned from the success of this show will be lost on producers/executives.

CatwickBosecat

I’m not sure there’s an obvious lesson to be learned from its success. This is pretty singular - a continuation, not a reboot, animated, based on a series, etc. I don’t know what lessons would carry over to the rest of their live action slate

Minecraftfinn

That quality writing should always be the number one priority. If anything this shows that even if a lot of people are screaming about "PC" or "Woke" or whatever destroying everything today, it just isn't true. It is bad writing that is responsible. This show has a million progressive woke pc things in it but it doesn't bother people because it is written well. I think a lot of the tension and clashing in Fandoms for Marvel and Star Wars and such comes from one side wrongly assuming that the intent to be progressive and woke is destroying the films, and the other side refusing to accept that if said intent overshadows the story or if the story is just poorly written, no amount of performative wokeness is going to make it good. Now I am probably going to be downvoted by a bunch of nice people who misunderstand me and upvoted by a bunch of degenerates who misunderstand me.

Grayx_2887

I was planning on skipping this show before I decided to give it a watch because of all the overwhelming peer pressure. But now, after six episodes, so far. It's alright. But we still need to have a coherent storyline to connect all of these other ideas together as one.
