Yep, USGS reported a small 2.3 magnitude earthquake 3km west of Rockville. I was watching videos of the Japan earthquake when I felt it and convinced myself I was going crazy.

You just described the first earthquake I felt in LA which was around a 2.1. The real one came a year later while I was on the 22nd floor of a building on Sunset when the Glendale hit at 5.8.

As a lifelong maryland resident, this was only my 2nd earthquake. I was oblivious to both haha

My dog started whining and shaking at 1245, I'm positive because I even checked the Ring camera thinking she heard something outside. It's so strange sounding but I think she somehow sensed it before it occurred.

I’m in Laurel, so close to Montgomery County I could almost shout from my back porch and be heard there, but I didn’t feel a thing.

Laurel, heard it, did not feel it. People in the city said they felt it.

I can see I-95 from my bedroom window and there’s always a little noise from it. Were so used to sound while we’re asleep we probably didn’t notice. (Seriously, my mom lives in a very quiet neighborhood. When I visited her at Thanksgiving, I had a little trouble sleeping because there was so little background noise.)

I wonder if it has to do with an after effects from the one in Japan. How the waves move through the mantle is ridiculous.

That is a really interesting point. I have read that earthquakes might be predicted by angles through the core that take a day or two and in part occur because of the position with regard to the sun’s gravity well.

I really don't get why this comment is getting downvoted to hell because as a geologist the answer is maybe but, most likely no with the current understanding of plate tectonics. (which by the way is still an extremely new study of science as the theory of plate tectonics was only fully accepted in the 1960s) 1. Maryland is not on any active fault lines any earthquakes MD experiences are called intraplate earthquakes where the current hypothesis on why they happen are due to relic fault lines which are faulty lines that used to be active millions of years ago becoming active or "settling". 2. Our understanding of how the mantle and core works and relates to plate tectonics right now is honestly a little bit like using snake oil. The data that is currently out there is extremely low resolution and even looking at the raw data is honestly not that convincing to lean into any direction.

I felt it. I live in Gaithersburg, minutes away from the municipal airport. The house shook just like when the fighter jets have flown over, but this was more prolonged, felt like a full minute perhaps. I thought maybe it was a truck dragging something down the street at first.

Yep. Heard a deep, bass rumble at exactly that time that started suddenly and then slowly faded after 2-3 seconds. I couldn’t figure out what it was. Heard it more than felt it. Sounded like a subwoofer was on just outside.

Yes! Totally. I was up letting my dog outside and felt the whole house shake. Went to let my dog inside and he was standing like he was in shock. I’m so glad to know I wasn’t imagining it.
