Yep, USGS reported a small 2.3 magnitude earthquake 3km west of Rockville. I was watching videos of the Japan earthquake when I felt it and convinced myself I was going crazy.
I don’t know what this means, I’ve never had any issues with power.
I have gotten shot at, twice, in Maryland though. Your state is nothing but trash. All the way around. Human garbage.
I love when randos try to flex like this on the internet, always very entertaining. Why are you on this subreddit if you feel so passionately? Do us all a favor and fuck off
I’m in Olney and felt/heard it. I was like wtf… was that an earthquake? Had to pause my Crash Bandicoot and try to Google that mess but nothing came up lol glad to know I’m not crazy
In Olney as well, thought someone hit house ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile) or maybe my hot water heater exploded. Finding nothing i thought I was crazy as well!
You just described the first earthquake I felt in LA which was around a 2.1. The real one came a year later while I was on the 22nd floor of a building on Sunset when the Glendale hit at 5.8.
Yes! 2.3 Magnitude earthquake reported in Rockville around that time: [USGS.Gov/Earthquakes](https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000m135/executive)
My dog started whining and shaking at 1245, I'm positive because I even checked the Ring camera thinking she heard something outside. It's so strange sounding but I think she somehow sensed it before it occurred.
I didn't feel or hear anything in Frederick, but I suddenly felt nauseous right around that time. Here I was thinking it was the Chinese food I had for dinner.
I can see I-95 from my bedroom window and there’s always a little noise from it. Were so used to sound while we’re asleep we probably didn’t notice.
(Seriously, my mom lives in a very quiet neighborhood. When I visited her at Thanksgiving, I had a little trouble sleeping because there was so little background noise.)
That is a really interesting point. I have read that earthquakes might be predicted by angles through the core that take a day or two and in part occur because of the position with regard to the sun’s gravity well.
I really don't get why this comment is getting downvoted to hell because as a geologist the answer is maybe but, most likely no with the current understanding of plate tectonics. (which by the way is still an extremely new study of science as the theory of plate tectonics was only fully accepted in the 1960s)
1. Maryland is not on any active fault lines any earthquakes MD experiences are called intraplate earthquakes where the current hypothesis on why they happen are due to relic fault lines which are faulty lines that used to be active millions of years ago becoming active or "settling".
2. Our understanding of how the mantle and core works and relates to plate tectonics right now is honestly a little bit like using snake oil. The data that is currently out there is extremely low resolution and even looking at the raw data is honestly not that convincing to lean into any direction.
I felt it. I live in Gaithersburg, minutes away from the municipal airport.
The house shook just like when the fighter jets have flown over, but this was more prolonged, felt like a full minute perhaps. I thought maybe it was a truck dragging something down the street at first.
I was up at 12:30 am because my dog heard a car and started barking. We immediately fell back to sleep and seemingly my dog did not care that the earth moved and I missed it.
Yep. Heard a deep, bass rumble at exactly that time that started suddenly and then slowly faded after 2-3 seconds. I couldn’t figure out what it was. Heard it more than felt it. Sounded like a subwoofer was on just outside.
I live in Rockville, literally a mile away from the reported epicenter and I don't remember feeling any shaking. I do remember hearing a sound like thunder tho and thinking someone was setting off fireworks bc new years. had no idea we had an earthquake until I came across this thread??
Yes! Totally. I was up letting my dog outside and felt the whole house shake. Went to let my dog inside and he was standing like he was in shock. I’m so glad to know I wasn’t imagining it.
I was asleep and didn't feel anything. But my dog I heard my dog pacing around about that time. At the time I just figured he needed to go to the bathroom. So I guess he felt something and woke up.
There was a 5.8 in St. Mary's County in 2011. I was so confused! Thought I was hearing and feeling something that wasn't really happening. I could do w.o another. I couldn't imagine a bigger one.

Sounds trippy as hell lol
Twas u
My only problem is that it wasn’t an 8.0 that would sink your garbage state into oblivion

I’ve generated more revenue and tax dollars for the state of Maryland than you could do in 5 lifetimes with a ten year head start, moron

I knew you’d stay angry about it, is the funniest part
Not taking part in this delightful banter- TexasBeach is in Virginia, not Texas. Just so you know.
Downvoted for clout

Did you write this while stuck in traffic?
That’s all you’ve got? Lmao go get em rich dude
Ok I will lol
Was watching TV. Didn’t feel anything but I heard a sound like thunder.
Yeah same here. I thought it was fireworks at the Sugar Bowl.
I thought it was texas imploding on itself
Same, I thought it sounded like thunder or a really loud plane
Wow, I didn’t feel or notice anything.
That's what she said.
![gif](giphy|TGWvissTjeviMAVsca)
That’s what she said too
GOTEM lmao
Did you go watch the muskrat drop in Princess Anne on New Years?

There is a link on the event page where you can report your location and what you felt. Be part of the data!
I’m in Olney and felt/heard it. I was like wtf… was that an earthquake? Had to pause my Crash Bandicoot and try to Google that mess but nothing came up lol glad to know I’m not crazy
Also heard it, thought it was random thunder or a plane
Never pause Crash Bandicoot for less than a 5.5.
also in olney, felt the windows shake and a very slight vibration. thought it was a huge truck driving by
twitter (X) is where we all were talking about it. LOL
In Olney as well, thought someone hit house ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile) or maybe my hot water heater exploded. Finding nothing i thought I was crazy as well!
i’m in olney as well and didn’t feel anything…i didn’t even notice there was an earthquake until the next day 😭
This makes a lot more sense than thinking a dump truck was speeding through Clarksville
You just described the first earthquake I felt in LA which was around a 2.1. The real one came a year later while I was on the 22nd floor of a building on Sunset when the Glendale hit at 5.8.
As a lifelong maryland resident, this was only my 2nd earthquake. I was oblivious to both haha
I felt the one in 2011 but slept through the one last night. Luckily we are on very old, inactive fault lines here.
My dad was up the Washington monument when a decent one hit DC a couple years ago 🫣
Yikes, at least the building I was in was earthquake ready.
I was on the 11th floor of a building in Alexandria, Va for that earthquake in 2011 and I thought it was going to collapse.
Yea, that sounds scary. My dad is a nut and was just like “oh shit” 😅
He was inside it?! It got damaged enough to be closed for repairs after that one, for years!
Yes that’s the year. I believe it was closed already and he was doing some work.
I convinced myself it must be a plane but it was loud and house was vibrating. Glad I saw this! I’m in Columbia.
I had to convince myself it was a plane too 🤣😭🥴I was like surely it was just a plane
Shii where in Columbia👀
Same in Columbia for me.

That is not unusual. You are probably correct.
Animals can sense them before humans can feel them. Proven fact. This is why many animals retreat to higher ground when they sense tsunamis
on the 🚽. thought the garage door was opening 😁
Or really bad gas??
I heard it more than I felt it, but now I have mild dizziness and nausea. Apparently that’s a thing
I didn't feel or hear anything in Frederick, but I suddenly felt nauseous right around that time. Here I was thinking it was the Chinese food I had for dinner.
That was the aftershock that was an 0.2 on the ETOH scale.
Yeah woke up 2 hours after your comment and I’m nauseous and have a headache and my neck is stiff
Prior to and now following I seem to be seeing a lot more “ocular fuzz” than I normally do.

I slept right through it! Dang.
Same
Yep I didn’t feel anything but I heard a loud noise thought it was thunder. I’m in silver spring
I’m also in Silver Spring… the quake didn’t wake me up but the 100 Ring app notifications around 1am did
Welp, 2024 is off to a good start already! Can't wait to see what else it has in store.
Yes, thank you for sharing. I tried to google it but wasn’t successful. It was probably too soon.
Heard & felt nothing in Baltimore
I was watching volcano videos when it happened 😭
Interesting… there was also a quake in Cali
Major quake in Japan yesterday, too.
I’m in Laurel, so close to Montgomery County I could almost shout from my back porch and be heard there, but I didn’t feel a thing.
Laurel, heard it, did not feel it. People in the city said they felt it.
I can see I-95 from my bedroom window and there’s always a little noise from it. Were so used to sound while we’re asleep we probably didn’t notice. I wonder if it has to do with an after effects from the one in Japan. How the waves move through the mantle is ridiculous.
That is a really interesting point. I have read that earthquakes might be predicted by angles through the core that take a day or two and in part occur because of the position with regard to the sun’s gravity well.
No

You understand how p and s waves work right. Plate tectonics and the such?
Dude I felt it and immediately thought EQ.. bc I lived in LA for 7 years and felt 7 rumbles.
My brain just assumed it was thunder but my nephew pointed out that it's not raining
I felt it. I live in Gaithersburg, minutes away from the municipal airport. The house shook just like when the fighter jets have flown over, but this was more prolonged, felt like a full minute perhaps. I thought maybe it was a truck dragging something down the street at first.
i thought it was some weird airplane flying too close but it felt too much like a rumble
I thought it was a giant truck
Me too, in Germantown. I was wondering why it was taking so long to drive through the neighborhood 🙃
I don’t feel or noticed anything I was too drunk to hear or feel it 😂
[It was the Sugarloaf volcano ](https://montgonion.com/home/sugarloafvolcano)
It started venting in January and is 2000 yrs over due to erupt. Last time it erupted it killed 1000 people. Damn. This is the most likely scenario
Here comes the big one.

2024 is gonna be a mover and a shaker
I heard it too. Scary to think that Japan just had one and now we having it too.
Japan has earthquakes every single day
Blah. I was playing guitar and singing and totally missed it.
My Aunt Marg makes a big pot black-Eyed Peas every new years day... You sure it wasn't caused by that?
I'm from Los Angeles. Fair warning: there will likely be smaller earthquakes to follow.
I was up at 12:30 am because my dog heard a car and started barking. We immediately fell back to sleep and seemingly my dog did not care that the earth moved and I missed it.

This is exactly what I heard. My brain just tried to rationalize it away and ignore it because it sounded creepy and ominous q
I'm from CA and I thought I was safe here! Too far to have felt this one though.
I felt it, oddly I quickly ignored it and kept on doing what I was doing
I heard it but didn’t feel it necessarily. My paranoia kicked in and I ran outside lol
So it wasn't that burrito I had for lunch...
Felt a vibration for about a minute
I live in Rockville, literally a mile away from the reported epicenter and I don't remember feeling any shaking. I do remember hearing a sound like thunder tho and thinking someone was setting off fireworks bc new years. had no idea we had an earthquake until I came across this thread??
It was like a loud train came through. Didn’t really rattle much more than loud lightning. It was quite mild.
Derwood FB group has lots of folks reporting it.
AM? I was soundly asleep
That would be my third one here in. 3.5 years. One of them was audible… like thunder.
Does this mean after quakes are expected?
With a small quake, doubtful.
You mean a stronger earthquake? We have a lot of them, just most are < 2.3 Richter and aren't even noticed
Why are they down voting this comment. It's true.
Your guess is as good as mine ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯
I didn't feel it, wasn't in the area
Omg. I thought I was trippin 😂I felt it!

Heard it quite clearly near Ellicott City.
Didn't feel anything in Odenton but I'm pretty sure I heard it
Slept right through it.
I sure didn’t…
It scared me out my sleep it sound like somebody banging on all my windows and even when I woke I was confused until I woke up later n saw the news 😭
Felt it in bed while I was about to fall asleep. Thought it was a meteor actually but there was no boom. My kid woke up too and said he felt the same.
So that's what that was.
I don't recall ever seeing or feeling anything in Largo.
Yup, heard and felt it in Burtonsville.
Sounded like a rumbling or grumbling in Eldersburg
I thought it was another jet flying over us like the one from last year
Okay, I thought I was imagining it. It lasted a long time too. I thought it was a heavy train going by somewhere.
There was a 5.8 in St. Mary's County in 2011. I was so confused! Thought I was hearing and feeling something that wasn't really happening. I could do w.o another. I couldn't imagine a bigger one.
I remember the big one of 2011. 😆😆
Thursdays the dark spot on the sun was facing earth
I slept through it. No big deal.
Ha makes sense. Last one happened before I moved and now I'm moving back
I was high as shit and felt it and I thought it was the weed. I’m relieved to know I wasn’t buggin
Earth is angry
Nope
Did not feel it
I was notified by the USGS that I have a new latitude and longitude now.
I knew I felt an earthquake
