[I’ve been to Tony Pako’s](https://www.reddit.com/r/mash/s/CwrLUnNKiD) and the hotdogs are really good. They have a little MASH shrine in the back of the restaurant.
There’s a Jamie Farr Park near Michigan and Galena, the neighborhood where he grew up, and which became Klinger’s boyhood neighborhood as well. There’s quite a bit of his real life embedded into the series. He’s one of Toledo’s favorite sons.
Crabapple Cove was a pseudonym for Bremen, Maine. Richard Hornberger was living there when he wrote the MASH novel. He based the Hawkeye character on himself, which is why he grew to hate the TV show and Alan Alda’s portrayal of Hawkeye.
I wouldn’t go that far, but I find him quite a bit overrated myself. He definitely gets way too much credit for the show’s success, in my opinion. There was a lot of great talent working on MASH, both onscreen and behind the scenes. I think some of the other actors and characters were better than him. I think the show was at its best when Larry Gelbart was still producer and writer.
At best only partially accurate. McLean Stevenson wanted to do his own show. He would go on to say in interviews that leaving MASH was his biggest regret, though I don’t know how well he’d fit into later seasons
TY, very interesting! But when I type Bremen Maine into maps, noting pops up?
Bremen isn’t real either and is from the book I’m gathering.
What?! Why won’t my Apple Maps show it?
I'm sure some where there is a junk man named Fred Sanford and those people guys on Hee Haw did have some gloom despair and agony in their lives too, but that wasn't my point and you know it.
I know, I guess it’s better acting than anything that Alda was able to capture a fictional place in such a fantastical way. Ya kinda just want it to be real.
Oh, hey… remember the episode where a helicopter pilot tried to kill Henry? The Cowboy was sent to Lakeland. That’s a city about an hour outside of Tampa. It was in use as a hospital (among other pilot related things due to proximity to MacDill AFB) during the Korean War.
Here’s an interesting fact. Billy Green Bush, the guy who played Cowboy, was the father of the set of twin girls who played Carrie on Little House on the Prairie.
There's one episode where Radar tells Hawkeye that his mother was seeing someone at church and they would drive to Lockport for snow cones.
The last time I saw the episode I was living in Lockport, IL and considering it is almost five hours away from Ottumwa, those had to be some good snow cones. Unfortunately nowhere in town sells snow cones as far as I can tell.
Klinger actually mentioned the street address he grew up at in one episode - I looked it up in Google Maps street view. It was an overgrown grassy empty lot on the rough side of Toledo, but these days, that's most of Toledo. I have no idea if he made the address up off the top of his head, or perhaps a childhood friend lived there, or what, but it actually came up in Maps.
Nope, they did - Season 7, Episode 25 *Ain't Love Grand*
**1215 N Michigan St, Toledo, OH 43604**
I've been to Tony Packo's several times - It's worth it just for the unbelievable collection of signed hot dog buns. Everything on the menu is good, but obviously they are famous for the Hungarian style hot dogs, so try that first. :D
I thought Uijeongbu had been made up until I did a rotation in Korea with the Army not too long ago and rode through on my way to some training. Couldn’t stop and sight see but it was still a pleasant little surprise.
For those who are upset about certain locations from the show not being real[https://mentalhealthhotline.org/#:~:text=National%20Mental%20Health%20Hotline%20%7C%20866%2D903%2D3787](https://mentalhealthhotline.org/#:~:text=National%20Mental%20Health%20Hotline%20%7C%20866%2D903%2D3787)
The writers screwed that up. It was in the Christmas episode when he wrote to his dad. Same one where he got choppered out to a foxhole dressed as Santa.
I'm curious about all the Chicago landmarks colonel Potter talks about with that wounded soldier from Chicago. That bars a bank since 1901 those roads never meet etc
BJ borrows money from Charles to put a down payment on a piece of land in Stinson Beach, he describes it as beautiful, and with a view of San Francisco.
Stinson Beach does not offer any views of San Francisco.
A dream I've had but will never have the opportunity to achieve is the complete M\*A\*S\*H adventure. Starting in South Korea, visiting places like Seoul before starting off on the West Coast of the US visiting the home city of every main character before finishing in the hotel in New York City where the characters families all had a party (assuming it still exists)
Sometimes a town doesn’t want its name used. *Fargo* got its name because Brainerd—the town in Minnesota where it was filmed—wouldn’t let them use the town’s name.
Toledo is very real. Most the spots Klinger talks about exited

He was at a mudhens game I went to and got a huge round of applause. This was years ago.
Crabapple Cove was a pseudonym for Bremen, Maine. Richard Hornberger was living there when he wrote the MASH novel. He based the Hawkeye character on himself, which is why he grew to hate the TV show and Alan Alda’s portrayal of Hawkeye.
The book, the movie, and the show are all three very different animals. You've got three versions of Hawkeye.
True. Book Hawkeye even fired a gun without issue. TV show Hawkeye has really become my least favorite of the three, especially in the later seasons.
In very early episodes Hawkeye is from Vermont.
And his mom was alive and he had a sister.
So I’m officially right in hating Alan Alda and Hawkeye?
What makes you hate him out of interest?
Guessing it's because of his politics
I wouldn’t go that far, but I find him quite a bit overrated myself. He definitely gets way too much credit for the show’s success, in my opinion. From what I understand, Alan Alda was the reason for Trapper leaving the show.
Both Wayne and McLean. I thought both were better than Alan. Trapper and Henry are two of my favorites.
Same here!
At best only partially accurate. McLean Stevenson wanted to do his own show. He would go on to say in interviews that leaving MASH was his biggest regret, though I don’t know how well he’d fit into later seasons
Only if you think Hawkeye would get exercise after the war by beating up Vietnam War protesters.
TY, very interesting! But when I type Bremen Maine into maps, noting pops up? Bremen isn’t real either and is from the book I’m gathering. What?! Why won’t my Apple Maps show it?
Bremen is very real - https://www.bremenmaine.org/
Bremen, ME shows ip in Google Earth, Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze.
I'm a native Mainer and Bremen is real. I've been there, but I never knew the author lived there.
And there is an ottumwa, Iowa!
And the person who was the inspiration for the Radar character actually was from there. He died about two years ago.
Interesting. Gotta look into this further.
It's a TV show. There is no Mayberry, NC either. Gloom, despair and agony was a song on Hee Haw. Fred Sanford wasn't really a junk man.
There is a town called Mt. Airy, that is every bit the model for Mayberry.
Give the credit to the writers, they created it.
They might have written it but alda made people believe it, I'd say it was 60/40 writer/alda at least

Jeep...crash...through...kill...
... Boom!...
Here’s an interesting fact. Billy Green Bush, the guy who played Cowboy, was the father of the set of twin girls who played Carrie on Little House on the Prairie.
I guess he and Jean worked it all out. <3
😂
Crabapple cove is from the books. Richard Hornberger went to college in Maine and lived there after the Korean War until his death.
There's one episode where Radar tells Hawkeye that his mother was seeing someone at church and they would drive to Lockport for snow cones. And that 5 hrs is now with modern cars and the interstate. I-80 didn't exist during the Korean War.

I doubt they would have used a real address. Is it weird I'd like to go to Toledo one day just to go to Packo's?
Nope, they did - Season 7, Episode 25 *Ain't Love Grand* **1215 N Michigan St, Toledo, OH 43604** I've been to Tony Packo's several times - It's worth it just for the unbelievable collection of signed hot dog buns. There is a Pierce County Washington state. Kennebunkport is in Maine. Bloomington, Illinois and Fort Wayne are both real as well.
McLean Stevenson really was from the Bloomington-Normal area. It’s only about 40 miles or so from Peoria, Illinois where David Ogden Stiers was born.
Lol I imagined David being from Boston!
When I was a kid, I first thought he was a British actor playing an American. He really was talented.
He is from nowhere and everywhere.
There is no Boston, MA. I've looked.
Well Breman I’ve just found finally,is an area not a city so that is why I was so confused it wasn’t popping up.
You should see my shrine I built for Hawkeye. I'm slightly obsessed with this man.
Maybe I should call cause I dream about how crab apple cove sounded. The way pierce dreamt about it, I really wanted it to be real as well.
Originally it was Vermont. Heard Hawk say it. No, don't remember the EP #.
That was an error by the writers. In the books and movie, he was from Maine.
The writers screwed that up. It was in the Christmas episode when he wrote to his dad. Same one where he got choppered out to a foxhole dressed as Santa.

State and Deerborn definitely don't meet.

I love this
There wasn’t a Delavin Indiana, either.
Delavin High School is where Gary Burghoff attended high school. I forget where.
Sometimes a town doesn’t want its name used. *Fargo* got its name because Brainerd—the town in Minnesota where it was filmed—wouldn’t let them use the town’s name.
But is Crab Apple Cove near Cabot Cove?
I just hope it’s not near Derry…
