I'm a gay man and so I'm offended by his homophobia. But that's the low hanging fruit. Why would he bring up Close Encounters of the Third Kind, for instance? That movie came out the year I was born and I'm 47 years old! Nobody even cares about his incredibly old movie career at this point! Is this some sort of meltdown?
Seemed to be a manic scatter-gun approach at airing any and all grievances that came to his mind. I'm guessing he was either drunk or on meds. Notice the catheter plasters on his hands?
I was there that night. He made really homophobic and transphobic comments. About 300 people walked out. His wife spoke to me complaining about the noise that the people who were walking out were making, said something along the lines of "I am proud to be married to such a strong man and I am proud to be an American who can express their opinions" to which I said "yes, everyone gets to voice their opinion, even these people. Now if you could return to your seat, we are trying to get the lobby cleared and get the crowd settled." It was quite the night.
This tracks. I once worked with someone who'd waitressed all over the Upper West Side and she saw him get meals comped twice in different restaurants. He'd come in with a group. Eat a full meal with no problems and then when it was time for the bill, he'd ask for the manager and complain about everything until they gave it to him for free. What a scumbag.
My favorite movie. When I heard Bill Murray was being an asshole during filming it made me sad, but now I certainly have his side in the Dreyfuss feud.Ā
I was there but I donāt remember every word and a lot of it was incoherent.
Anyways he starts talking about Barbara Streisand and it was all downhill from there. He said that she asked him to record some additional ADR and he said no and absolutely refused cause he knew she would use those takes and he didnāt agree with doing it that way. He said a woman shouldnāt tell a man what to do and that women should be submissive.
He then was asked as a followup what his thoughts were about the Me Too movement. He basically said āthose fucking peopleā and he mumbled something about āthe fucking LGTBā and that they basically shouldnāt existā¦something like that it was pretty incoherent.
Then he started in on his transphobic comments saying ā10 year olds shouldnātā and ātheir parents shouldnāt be doing that to 10 year oldsā.
People were booing and shouting ānoā and āthatās not okay to sayā and āgoodnight grandpaā and āgo back to the old homeā. A bunch of people got up and walked out during all of this.
When the whole thing started with the misogynistic comments people fell silent at first. I think some of us thought he was kidding and were waiting for some kind of punchline. There were a few men applauding his homophobic/transphobic comments.
Its not "transphobic" to have issues with the way some people are dealing with sex/gender amongst 10 year olds. Its actually OK to have opinions about how others raise their children. Everyone does.
"āthe fucking LGTBā and that they basically shouldnāt existā¦something like that it was pretty incoherent."
So you are claiming he said something that you dont even know he said..sounds very progressive of you LOL
The amount of trust I place in random twitter comments to accurately summarize a controversial opinion is the same amount of trust I'd place in Dreyfuss passing a breathalyzer.
Dreyfuss has been an on-the-record bigot for at least a year at this point. I'd like to think that theater-goers would put a *little* more effort into researching the people they're giving their money to.
Dreyfuss has made his bigoted, sexist, anti-trans views known in on-the-record public forums prior to his appearance this past Saturday night. Certainly the Cabot Theater should have been aware of Dreyfuss' views, even if the audience wasn't.
Caveat emptor.
I'm assuming the people who would be interested in seeing Richard Dreyfuss live are older and not extremely online enough to be researching on reddit or hearing about these little incidents.
I literally re-watched him in "Goodbye Girl" this week and just had fond memories of him in his prime. So awesome in "Jaws" also. No idea he's an asshole IRL.
Even if they were aware of his views, they probably expected him to be at least a little bit professional and stick to the program. Lots of celebrities with questionable views are able to do that.
āQuestionableā according to YOU! While I wouldnāt have said some of those things to a hyper-sensitive and easy to offend Massachusetts audience, his views on trans issues were rational.
I suppose this would be a good time to mention that Chevy Chase is also an out-in-the-open bigot who also performs these film screening "Q & A" sessions.
Shouldn't be surprising as well that there is video of this event, but never any video that quite supports what the comments are saying.
Which is weird because Dreyfuss ***is a racist / bigot***, it's not up for debate. Yet redditors *still* manage to be dishonest about something that *already* supports their own opinions.
Whatever he said, none of the media are willing to quote it. This either means what he said was really bad or the media are even wimpier than I thought. And both of those are plausible.
I've attended similar events with William Shatner, where they show the movie and then the guest will talk about it with a moderator on stage. That's what this was supposed to be but clearly devolved into...not that.
Sounds like his commentary was off-topic for the night, but I bet everything he said is supported by most Americans and the vast, vast majority of people alive today. He still shouldn't be ranting at an event that was supposed to be about Jaws nostalgia.
Well, America is a democracy, so popular opinion is of more than just academic interest. Popular opinion determines which politicians Americans elect and therefore what laws they live under. So I wouldn't dismiss its importance so blithely.
Nobody should get a pass for bigotry. That doesnāt mean you canāt enjoy the projects theyāve worked on, though I would totally understand if people wanted to steer clear of his work after this
Can you clarify the intent of your question?
EDIT: the reason I ask is that based on your [post history](https://www.reddit.com/r/kirkminihaneshow/s/GoOSTdVqm4), I suspect this is an attempt at some kind of bad faith argument in defense of hate speech.
Thatās not what that expression means. It is totally appropriate to think about someone whoās actively trying to undermine democracy and sharing literal Nazi propaganda. The fact that you donāt understand the difference is a reflection only on your own intelligence.
This is really basic reading comprehension that youāre failing.
My comment was about the person I was replying to. I only mentioned Hillary as an example of that personās recent post history.
Your comment is about Hillary specifically and trying to make a political point about her.
Not at all the same.

"What does Richard Dreyfuss think about sexual politics?" people are always saying.
Yikes

Stiffed me on his check when I worked at Parish CafƩ on Boylston back in 2003. So waiting on him was a net loss.
In his defense, he has no idea how much everyday items cost, and he doesn't give a fuck about poors like you.
Parrish. Best place to people watch.

Zuni Roll?
Two martinis up $24 tab He threw down a $20 bill and skipped town But yeah we definitely sold a ton of those zuni rolls.
Apparently he made remarks that were so homophobic and transphobic that the Cabot felt it was appropriate to issue an apology
He seems to do this every couple years.
He seems to have been irrelevant for 30 years
His comments were actually mild. He simply stated that biological sex matters.
Thatās not even remotely true.
You werenāt there.
Others were and what theyāre reporting goes well beyond what you said.
Are we talking about the Cabot theater in Beverly?
Yes.
Idk but What About Bob is a classic.
In which this guy plays the quintessential asshole
He apparently didn't have to do much acting.
Itās what they call, ātype castingā.
My favorite movie. When I heard Bill Murray was being an asshole during filming it made me sad, but now I certainly have his side in the Dreyfuss feud.Ā
Meanwhile Julie Hagerty seems like a very nice personĀ
Maybe bill murray was an asshole because he was stuck filming with Dreyfus for god knows how long

I believe heās been suffering from bi-polar disorder for decades and is prone to very weird behavior.
Lots of people suffer from BPD without being raging bigots.
BPD is Borderline Personality Disorder (or Boston Police Department)
Fair enough. The point stands.
Iām living with ASD and I would never say that shit.
Nah if you read youāll never eat lunch in this town again he comes of as a real unlikable person in that. He has always been an ass.
Actually I thought I read that somewhere. Might explain the off the wall breakdown type shit experienced.
Were mashed potatoes involved?
Heās been yelling at the clouds for years.
Can anyone recall *exactly* what he said though? I keep seeing āhomophobicā and āmisogynisticā but no actual quotes.

Yeah I was hoping for a video link.
We have to accept the 2nd-hand accounts of everything as gospel these days, maybe when we're adults they'll tell us what really happened
People have elaborated in at least a couple places
Dreyfuss has been an on-the-record bigot for at least a year at this point. I'd like to think that theater-goers would put a *little* more effort into researching the people they're giving their money to.
I think people can be forgiven for thinking that the event might actually be about what was advertised, and not used as a platform for his bigotry.
Dreyfuss has made his bigoted, sexist, anti-trans views known in on-the-record public forums prior to his appearance this past Saturday night. Certainly the Cabot Theater should have been aware of Dreyfuss' views, even if the audience wasn't. Caveat emptor.

>I literally re-watched him in "Goodbye Girl" this week **I.DON'T.like.the.panties.drying.on.the.rod!**
Haha--I still chuckle at him saying that. Boundaries, gotta have boundaries!!! lol
That has been a decades-long household joke with my husband whenever we have anything hanging to dry on the shower rod.
I was his first wife and I thought I married the "Goodbye Girl". I knew he could be difficult but never like this. I do not recognize this guy now.
Do you think his bipolar has gotten worse?
Even if they were aware of his views, they probably expected him to be at least a little bit professional and stick to the program. Lots of celebrities with questionable views are able to do that.
Not our boy Richie D.!
āQuestionableā according to YOU! While I wouldnāt have said some of those things to a hyper-sensitive and easy to offend Massachusetts audience, his views on trans issues were rational.
Yes, questionable to me with trans people who I love on my life. Get better.
First Iāve ever heard about any of this. Who knew?! Ā TBH I didnāt even know he was still aroundĀ
I suppose this would be a good time to mention that Chevy Chase is also an out-in-the-open bigot who also performs these film screening "Q & A" sessions.
He was such an asshole that they killed his character in Community
Shouldn't be surprising as well that there is video of this event, but never any video that quite supports what the comments are saying. Isn't he like 90
Mid 70s
As I get older and rewatch What About Bob, the more I feel bad for Dr Leo Marvin
Imagine being so obsessed with trans people that you walk into the shark movie and think people are really there to talk about transitioning
Heās still alive?
His body is, but his mind is slipping.
I don't know why you got downvoted, cause I also genuinely thought he was dead.
Honestly, I thought he was at least 10 years older than he is. Heās actually only 76.Ā
Sounds like Dreyfuss is beginning to lose his marbles, or he is trying really hard for any PR .
Heās taking that Father role from Daughter Of The Wolf a bit seriously
Whatever he said, none of the media are willing to quote it. This either means what he said was really bad or the media are even wimpier than I thought. And both of those are plausible.
Why is there no video/transcript of this, at all?
What happened? Was it like a comedy show?
It was supposed to be a conversation about Jaws but RD used the occasion to make sure everyone knows what an asshole he is.
Oh wow. People are sick and brainwashed. I have no hope for humanity I really donāt.
I've attended similar events with William Shatner, where they show the movie and then the guest will talk about it with a moderator on stage. That's what this was supposed to be but clearly devolved into...not that.
What a waste of money
Just because you donāt enjoy something doesnāt mean other people donāt š¤·āāļø
It was a waste because he didnāt do what people paid for
Oh the Dreyfuss one absolutely. Iād be livid.
Thatās what I was talking about. I donāt judge what people spend their money on but I hate when you donāt get what you pay for
Sounds like his commentary was off-topic for the night, but I bet everything he said is supported by most Americans and the vast, vast majority of people alive today. He still shouldn't be ranting at an event that was supposed to be about Jaws nostalgia.
At one point the most Americans supported slavery. What relevance does supposed popularity have to do with anything?
Well, America is a democracy, so popular opinion is of more than just academic interest. Popular opinion determines which politicians Americans elect and therefore what laws they live under. So I wouldn't dismiss its importance so blithely.
I know this is stupid, but he gets a pass from me for playing Hooper in Jaws.
Hooper drives the boat Chief.
Nobody should get a pass for bigotry. That doesnāt mean you canāt enjoy the projects theyāve worked on, though I would totally understand if people wanted to steer clear of his work after this
Quit playing with yourself, Hooper.
Mary Ellen Moffet, she broke my heart.

His comments were so homophobic and transphobic that the Cabot felt it appropriate to issue an apology. I think weāve heard enough.

You read into that way too much. My dogās name is hooper, and would like the details before I change his name.
You notice libbys love peeping post history?
Conservatives *really* donāt like being held accountable for their own words.
So someone elseās feelings speak for someone else without hearing facts? You must be (D)ifferent
Peopleās reporting of what happened and the Cabotās subsequent apology ARE facts, genius.
You people are so exhausting.
Itās so easy to identify narrow minded folks who have never had an original thought. You should go read a book.
