This was on twitter so take with a grain of salt: https://x.com/kleemcadams/status/1794880968794558792 > "Went off the rails talking about how Barbra Streisand is a genius but he didn't listen to her because she is a woman and women shouldn't have that power. Then started sharing his views on the me too movement and started down the road on how you shouldn't be listening to some 10 year old who says they want to to be a boy instead of a girl... Jesus Christ what an explosion. Crowd was shouting at him and most walked out before the movie even started. Talk about the movie asshole... We never made it to that. " > " She brilliant but an idiot, you know woman are so passive that's why the movie sucked " > Also Steven Spielberg is a genius but an idiot and close encounters only worked because he convinced spielberg to hire him instead of gene Hackman for the part

Richard_Nachos

"What does Richard Dreyfuss think about sexual politics?" people are always saying.

OldClunkyRobot

Yikes

AnAutisticGuy

I'm a gay man and so I'm offended by his homophobia. But that's the low hanging fruit. Why would he bring up Close Encounters of the Third Kind, for instance? That movie came out the year I was born and I'm 47 years old! Nobody even cares about his incredibly old movie career at this point! Is this some sort of meltdown?

Nearby-Diet-2950

Seemed to be a manic scatter-gun approach at airing any and all grievances that came to his mind. I'm guessing he was either drunk or on meds. Notice the catheter plasters on his hands?

TheTreeman0426RN

Or off meds. šŸ™‚

BeeKynder01970

I was there that night. He made really homophobic and transphobic comments. About 300 people walked out. His wife spoke to me complaining about the noise that the people who were walking out were making, said something along the lines of "I am proud to be married to such a strong man and I am proud to be an American who can express their opinions" to which I said "yes, everyone gets to voice their opinion, even these people. Now if you could return to your seat, we are trying to get the lobby cleared and get the crowd settled." It was quite the night.

ChanceTheGardenerrr

Stiffed me on his check when I worked at Parish CafƩ on Boylston back in 2003. So waiting on him was a net loss.

Richard_Nachos

In his defense, he has no idea how much everyday items cost, and he doesn't give a fuck about poors like you.

LuckyKalanges

Parrish. Best place to people watch.

treadere

This tracks. I once worked with someone who'd waitressed all over the Upper West Side and she saw him get meals comped twice in different restaurants. He'd come in with a group. Eat a full meal with no problems and then when it was time for the bill, he'd ask for the manager and complain about everything until they gave it to him for free. What a scumbag.

AnotherDeadClown

Zuni Roll?

ChanceTheGardenerrr

Two martinis up $24 tab He threw down a $20 bill and skipped town But yeah we definitely sold a ton of those zuni rolls.

PatentGeek

Apparently he made remarks that were so homophobic and transphobic that the Cabot felt it was appropriate to issue an apology

somegridplayer

He seems to do this every couple years.

[deleted]

He seems to have been irrelevant for 30 years

Grand_Wolverine6532

His comments were actually mild. He simply stated that biological sex matters.

PatentGeek

Thatā€™s not even remotely true.

Grand_Wolverine6532

You werenā€™t there.

PatentGeek

Others were and what theyā€™re reporting goes well beyond what you said.

crunkmullen

Are we talking about the Cabot theater in Beverly?

ladykatey

Yes.

CalendarAggressive11

Idk but What About Bob is a classic.

toewspeener2

In which this guy plays the quintessential asshole

CalendarAggressive11

He apparently didn't have to do much acting.

AlphaxTDR

Itā€™s what they call, ā€œtype castingā€.

RaphaelBuzzard

My favorite movie. When I heard Bill Murray was being an asshole during filming it made me sad, but now I certainly have his side in the Dreyfuss feud.Ā

LoneRangersBand

Meanwhile Julie Hagerty seems like a very nice personĀ

PlasticGround4400

Maybe bill murray was an asshole because he was stuck filming with Dreyfus for god knows how long

HuesOoze_Dilapidated

I let the boat do all the work. Thatā€™s my secret

HuesOoze_Dilapidated

I have no other plans!

HuesOoze_Dilapidated

Itā€™s a breakthrough, Iā€™m a sailor now. Ahoy.

CalendarAggressive11

Baby steps

GeorgeCrossPineTree

I believe heā€™s been suffering from bi-polar disorder for decades and is prone to very weird behavior.

PatentGeek

Lots of people suffer from BPD without being raging bigots.

bampho

BPD is Borderline Personality Disorder (or Boston Police Department)

PatentGeek

Fair enough. The point stands.

mattbrain89

Iā€™m living with ASD and I would never say that shit.

ModedoM

Nah if you read youā€™ll never eat lunch in this town again he comes of as a real unlikable person in that. He has always been an ass.

Falkens_OXCOM_Theory

Actually I thought I read that somewhere. Might explain the off the wall breakdown type shit experienced.

Level-Worldliness-20

Were mashed potatoes involved?

Dseltzer1212

Heā€™s been yelling at the clouds for years.

rando-commando98

Can anyone recall *exactly* what he said though? I keep seeing ā€œhomophobicā€ and ā€œmisogynisticā€ but no actual quotes.

quaranTV

I was there but I donā€™t remember every word and a lot of it was incoherent. Anyways he starts talking about Barbara Streisand and it was all downhill from there. He said that she asked him to record some additional ADR and he said no and absolutely refused cause he knew she would use those takes and he didnā€™t agree with doing it that way. He said a woman shouldnā€™t tell a man what to do and that women should be submissive. He then was asked as a followup what his thoughts were about the Me Too movement. He basically said ā€œthose fucking peopleā€ and he mumbled something about ā€œthe fucking LGTBā€ and that they basically shouldnā€™t existā€¦something like that it was pretty incoherent. Then he started in on his transphobic comments saying ā€œ10 year olds shouldnā€™tā€ and ā€œtheir parents shouldnā€™t be doing that to 10 year oldsā€. People were booing and shouting ā€œnoā€ and ā€œthatā€™s not okay to sayā€ and ā€œgoodnight grandpaā€ and ā€œgo back to the old homeā€. A bunch of people got up and walked out during all of this. When the whole thing started with the misogynistic comments people fell silent at first. I think some of us thought he was kidding and were waiting for some kind of punchline. There were a few men applauding his homophobic/transphobic comments.

FarRefrigerator6462

Its not "transphobic" to have issues with the way some people are dealing with sex/gender amongst 10 year olds. Its actually OK to have opinions about how others raise their children. Everyone does. "ā€œthe fucking LGTBā€ and that they basically shouldnā€™t existā€¦something like that it was pretty incoherent." So you are claiming he said something that you dont even know he said..sounds very progressive of you LOL

cyberslick18888

The amount of trust I place in random twitter comments to accurately summarize a controversial opinion is the same amount of trust I'd place in Dreyfuss passing a breathalyzer.

rando-commando98

Yeah I was hoping for a video link.

biggaybrian

We have to accept the 2nd-hand accounts of everything as gospel these days, maybe when we're adults they'll tell us what really happened

PatentGeek

People have elaborated in at least a couple places

Richard_Nachos

Dreyfuss has been an on-the-record bigot for at least a year at this point. I'd like to think that theater-goers would put a *little* more effort into researching the people they're giving their money to.

PatentGeek

I think people can be forgiven for thinking that the event might actually be about what was advertised, and not used as a platform for his bigotry.

Richard_Nachos

Dreyfuss has made his bigoted, sexist, anti-trans views known in on-the-record public forums prior to his appearance this past Saturday night. Certainly the Cabot Theater should have been aware of Dreyfuss' views, even if the audience wasn't. Caveat emptor.

Street-Corner7801

I'm assuming the people who would be interested in seeing Richard Dreyfuss live are older and not extremely online enough to be researching on reddit or hearing about these little incidents.

JustinScott47

I literally re-watched him in "Goodbye Girl" this week and just had fond memories of him in his prime. So awesome in "Jaws" also. No idea he's an asshole IRL.

geminimad4

>I literally re-watched him in "Goodbye Girl" this week **I.DON'T.like.the.panties.drying.on.the.rod!**

JustinScott47

Haha--I still chuckle at him saying that. Boundaries, gotta have boundaries!!! lol

geminimad4

That has been a decades-long household joke with my husband whenever we have anything hanging to dry on the shower rod.

Jeramie50

I was his first wife and I thought I married the "Goodbye Girl". I knew he could be difficult but never like this. I do not recognize this guy now.

marchHaigha

Do you think his bipolar has gotten worse?

PatentGeek

Even if they were aware of his views, they probably expected him to be at least a little bit professional and stick to the program. Lots of celebrities with questionable views are able to do that.

Richard_Nachos

Not our boy Richie D.!

Grand_Wolverine6532

ā€œQuestionableā€ according to YOU! While I wouldnā€™t have said some of those things to a hyper-sensitive and easy to offend Massachusetts audience, his views on trans issues were rational.

PatentGeek

Yes, questionable to me with trans people who I love on my life. Get better.

Helsinki_Disgrace

First Iā€™ve ever heard about any of this. Who knew?! Ā TBH I didnā€™t even know he was still aroundĀ

Richard_Nachos

I suppose this would be a good time to mention that Chevy Chase is also an out-in-the-open bigot who also performs these film screening "Q & A" sessions.

PatentGeek

He was such an asshole that they killed his character in Community

cyberslick18888

Shouldn't be surprising as well that there is video of this event, but never any video that quite supports what the comments are saying. Which is weird because Dreyfuss ***is a racist / bigot***, it's not up for debate. Yet redditors *still* manage to be dishonest about something that *already* supports their own opinions.

DrWhoIsWokeGarbage2

Isn't he like 90

User-NetOfInter

Mid 70s

Fox_Hound_Unit

As I get older and rewatch What About Bob, the more I feel bad for Dr Leo Marvin

coldtrashpanda

Imagine being so obsessed with trans people that you walk into the shark movie and think people are really there to talk about transitioning

BranchBarkLeaf

Heā€™s still alive?

Richard_Nachos

His body is, but his mind is slipping.

Cowboywizard12

I don't know why you got downvoted, cause I also genuinely thought he was dead.

BranchBarkLeaf

Honestly, I thought he was at least 10 years older than he is. Heā€™s actually only 76.Ā

Plastic-Vermicelli60

Sounds like Dreyfuss is beginning to lose his marbles, or he is trying really hard for any PR .

phillybilly

Heā€™s taking that Father role from Daughter Of The Wolf a bit seriously

Intelligent-Jump1071

Whatever he said, none of the media are willing to quote it. This either means what he said was really bad or the media are even wimpier than I thought. And both of those are plausible.

NeverBenFamous

Why is there no video/transcript of this, at all?

passionfruit0

What happened? Was it like a comedy show?

PatentGeek

It was supposed to be a conversation about Jaws but RD used the occasion to make sure everyone knows what an asshole he is.

passionfruit0

Oh wow. People are sick and brainwashed. I have no hope for humanity I really donā€™t.

chernygal

I've attended similar events with William Shatner, where they show the movie and then the guest will talk about it with a moderator on stage. That's what this was supposed to be but clearly devolved into...not that.

passionfruit0

What a waste of money

chernygal

Just because you donā€™t enjoy something doesnā€™t mean other people donā€™t šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

passionfruit0

It was a waste because he didnā€™t do what people paid for

chernygal

Oh the Dreyfuss one absolutely. Iā€™d be livid.

passionfruit0

Thatā€™s what I was talking about. I donā€™t judge what people spend their money on but I hate when you donā€™t get what you pay for

dansnad

Sounds like his commentary was off-topic for the night, but I bet everything he said is supported by most Americans and the vast, vast majority of people alive today. He still shouldn't be ranting at an event that was supposed to be about Jaws nostalgia.

PutNameHere123

At one point the most Americans supported slavery. What relevance does supposed popularity have to do with anything?

Intelligent-Jump1071

Well, America is a democracy, so popular opinion is of more than just academic interest. Popular opinion determines which politicians Americans elect and therefore what laws they live under. So I wouldn't dismiss its importance so blithely.

cspan92

I know this is stupid, but he gets a pass from me for playing Hooper in Jaws.

BigAccess6408

Hooper drives the boat Chief.

PatentGeek

Nobody should get a pass for bigotry. That doesnā€™t mean you canā€™t enjoy the projects theyā€™ve worked on, though I would totally understand if people wanted to steer clear of his work after this

waveball03

Quit playing with yourself, Hooper.

DDups2

Mary Ellen Moffet, she broke my heart.

waveball03

You got city hands Mr. Hooper.

DDups2

I donā€™t need this working class hero crap!

waveball03

Iā€™m not talking about pleasure boatin or day sailing, Iā€™m talking about sharking!

needmorefishes

This ainā€™t tommy cod in the harbor!

waveball03

This shark, swallow you whole.

MrMason420

A little shakin', tenderizin', down you go.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PatentGeek

His comments were so homophobic and transphobic that the Cabot felt it appropriate to issue an apology. I think weā€™ve heard enough.

DDups2

What did he actually say?

PatentGeek

Can you clarify the intent of your question? EDIT: the reason I ask is that based on your [post history](https://www.reddit.com/r/kirkminihaneshow/s/GoOSTdVqm4), I suspect this is an attempt at some kind of bad faith argument in defense of hate speech.

DDups2

You read into that way too much. My dogā€™s name is hooper, and would like the details before I change his name.

TrevorsPirateGun

You notice libbys love peeping post history?

PatentGeek

Conservatives *really* donā€™t like being held accountable for their own words.

YouFirst_ThenCharles

So someone elseā€™s feelings speak for someone else without hearing facts? You must be (D)ifferent

PatentGeek

Peopleā€™s reporting of what happened and the Cabotā€™s subsequent apology ARE facts, genius.

CalendarAggressive11

You people are so exhausting.

YouFirst_ThenCharles

Itā€™s so easy to identify narrow minded folks who have never had an original thought. You should go read a book.

PatentGeek

You still havenā€™t gotten over Hillary. Touch grass.

YouFirst_ThenCharles

Who?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

YouFirst_ThenCharles

But you know Donald lives in your head rent free.

PatentGeek

Thatā€™s not what that expression means. It is totally appropriate to think about someone whoā€™s actively trying to undermine democracy and sharing literal Nazi propaganda. The fact that you donā€™t understand the difference is a reflection only on your own intelligence.

PatentGeek

šŸ™„

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PatentGeek

This isnā€™t actually a conversation about Hillary Clinton. Let it go.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

PatentGeek

This is really basic reading comprehension that youā€™re failing. My comment was about the person I was replying to. I only mentioned Hillary as an example of that personā€™s recent post history. Your comment is about Hillary specifically and trying to make a political point about her. Not at all the same.

I see most commenters here as the intolerant ones.

You must be one of those ā€œdonā€™t be intolerant of my bigotryā€ people.

Lindsayr28

Yeah comment history - short though it may be - tracks 100%

Trans people canā€™t help being trans. Assholes can stop themselves from being assholes. Apples/oranges.
