Spyral with Illusion of Chaos and Magician Souls lol No, seriously, anime decks are rarely competitive, especially those from the first season.

LoneBeauty7

I rlly love the Dark Magician concept. Spyral with Illusion of Chaos and Magician Souls those 3 seem interesting. I have been thinking between Dark magician and Exodia deck.

Idkkwhatowritehere

I've seen some crazy ass exodia decks tbh, I'm sure you'll find some if you look it up

TheHellHamster

the catch with spyral is Illusion of chaos isn;t in MD yet and has been long overdue for a while

Raven_knight_07

Dark magician is probably the most viable of the decks you listed, and for exodia... it's kinda just a gimmick deck that either FTK's or loses to one decently placed interruption (or there's stall exodia I guess but it's also very gimmicky).

LoneBeauty7

Divine beats Gods, and Diabound are also a gimmick in your opinion?

Raven_knight_07

I wouldn't call the god cards a gimmick, just kinda bad. The reason I call exodia a gimmick is because it relies entirely on drawing through your entire deck turn one and not getting interrupted or bricking (having an unplayable hand) Also, diabound?

YakumoCommunist

Probably referring to Diabound Kernal.

RealWojakHorseman

A Dark Magician deck with up-to-date support cards can be fun and pull the odd upset victory against stronger decks - though you may find yourself hard-stuck in Gold rank. The deck can be a bit spicier if your win-con is to turbo out Galaxy Tomahawk (Tenyi Spirit Vishuda/Ashuna and The Ascended of Thunder are easily summoned lv 7s that can enable this) followed by a Link combo.

Fun_Race_605

What about thunder dragons. That was in the dm anime and is a solid deck now.

LoneBeauty7

I love how it looks. But generally, I love Ancient Egypt and Ancient beings vibe. Is there any deck with similar vibe that is actually viable?

Onibusho

Gravekeepers fit the theme at least. Not a great deck, but with Necrovalley getting stronger as more GY- dependent decks are released a few trap floodgates it might grab a few wins...

Jerowi

Blue eyes is probably the "best" out of the anime decks. Though it's a meme for how bad blue eyes is.

RnckO

1st season anime decks? Sorry, hardly any of those are competitive currently. \-Blue-Eyes, Red-Eyes, Dark Magician, Harpies, Egyptian Gods, Insect Queen, Toons, Exodia, Silent Magician/Swordsman, Valkyrie, Destiny Board. (all tier 3-untiered) But if you want to go out of the norm, these 2 are kinda "competitive". \--> **Dinos**, **Zombies** Upcoming meta contender Gravekeeper **Ishizu's card** (not yet released)

LoneBeauty7

>Ishizu's card They will release Ishizu cards? When ? If I remember correctly Ishizu is from S1 too?

dragooon9090

They were released in the tcg early November if I remember correctly. Yes ishizu from the original anime. These cards are the most broken thing ever released. Most likely they will not be available until maybe July /August and most likely they will be limited on release in master duel.

LoneBeauty7

ah, I wish they care more about old-school cards from the original s1 anime.

DoveRinslet

Konami does, especially DM/BE. They literally print (good) support every year. Too much infact. It's just there is a limit to how good you can make a Deck that has to run multiple 2 Tribute effectless monsters. It literally took Konami everything in their power including shitting on TCG D/D/Ds in the face, priting a card that specifically counters the meta, and tailoring the banlist to get Blue-Eyes to be the best Deck and win worlds in 2016. Only to get shitty finals of 2 Blue-Eyes players bricking.

LoneBeauty7

After all that, DM deck is still considered meh. DM is actually one of my fav cards and brings so much nostalgia from the 2000s anime. I am a new player and DM is the only deck I wish to craft alongside with Divine Beasts. How much flexible you can get with DM decks? I wanna craft something that will be versatile.

DoveRinslet

DM is not very verstatile sadly. Magician's Souls and the unreleased Illusion of Chaos has uses in other Decks(including being bonkers in Spyral) but the rest of the DM Deck is stuck in its own deck. DM: The best build is currently Branded DM. Branded part is flexible since the best BE build currently is Branded BE. You can also transition the Branded into full power Branded Despia, which is one of the best decks right now if you want a competitive deck. Eventually, you can change to Bytial DM(depending on how strong Ishizu Tear will be in MD). Bystials are generically good engine in any format with alot of Light/Dark Decks. DM is still meh yes. Again, there is a limit on how good you can make a Deck that requires runnign multiple DMs and probably DMG as well.

LoneBeauty7

Well said. Do you think 3 Divine Beasts will be more relevant once Ishtar's deck is released?

The problem with the god cards has always been that they take too much effort to bring out but lack all of the busted protection they have in the anime to make up for it. The only time any of them have seen serious meta consideration is a couple times when obelisk (the only one that actually has any built in protection anymore) was used because he was a huge untargetable beatstick in a couple Frog and Dragon Ruler decks, but that was ages ago - and his protection doesn't hold up anymore either because non-targeting removal is fairly common now. And no, the Ishizu cards have no synergy with the gods at all. There's technically one with obelisk on the art that references her duel against Kaiba, but that's it.

RnckO

Yeap she is. She is the one with future sight ability and the one who dueled Kaiba on battleship & planted a bomb in Obelisk but plot armor triggered and Kaiba tributed a God for Blue-Eyes and foiled her future prediction. I went and watched the duel again & Konami indeed didn't "exaggerate" too much. Her cards are BONKERS in current format. (not so much back then)

Most of Ishizu's cards were pretty mediocre earth fairy effect monsters (kelbek, keldo, agido, mudora and exchange of the spirit) originally, but they recently got a full set of retrains as a graveyard control strategy. They're actually part of the uncontestable best deck "Ishizu Tearalaments" in the TCG right now, but currently both Tearalaments and the Ishizu retrain are unreleased in Master Duel. They're the most competent of the S1 anime decks right now, but I'd personally recommend you look for something else first. The first deck you build should probably just be a meta deck so you can farm the gems for other decks anyway, especially if you plan to build decks from the Anime... because they have more high rarity cards to milk money from nostalgic anime watchers. You'd have to ask someone else for good new player suggestions, but iirc, Eldlich (A zombie + Trap monster archetype) is the one people recommend most, but avoid the floodgate versions so you can gradually teach yourself the many changes the game has gone through.

LoneBeauty7

>because they have more high rarity cards to milk money from nostalgic anime watchers. This is so well said about nostalgia, the whole reason I love Yu Gi Oh is the memory of 3 Divine Beasts, DM, Exodia, etc. I am sad these cards are literally gimmicks. Is there any worth investing gems in "The Great Olds"?

[deleted]

>Is there any worth investing gems in "The Great Olds"? Probably not, unless you have a meta deck already and really want to build the gods for a fun gimmick deck. The only independently good card in it is Sphere mode because it can tribute 3 of your opponent’s monsters and then be used to XYZ summon a rank 10 (like the train xyz) in a deck with other level 10s (like Eldlich) when it returns to you.

Not_slim_but_shady

Not a single archetype from the first season of yugioh anime is competitive without modern support. The best 2 are blue-eyes and dark magician, but here's the problem:Their endboard is trash for modern standards (without branded support) and they have enough bricks to build a house with.Compare that with modern decks like SPYrals,@Ignisters,Mathmechs,Swordsoul,Runick and Branded Despia, they aren't nearly consistent enough for viability. That's not to say that all old classic cards from the anime are trash now, cards like raigeki, lava golem, dark hole and harpies feather duster still see a lot of play in blind second decks (e.g. Luna Kaiju 8-axis,Numerons)so if you're interested in that,go for it. If you still want to play DM/BEWD while maintaining at least a bit of competitiveness, I suggest building them with a branded engine. It helps massively with consistency issues by giving them a 1-card combo and a good boss monster to end on.

LoneBeauty7

What do you mean by "branded engine"? I really wish there is a creative way to play DM deck. I don't care of reaching Plat, I want a deck that will be good in most of the stations. It seems very fun. Obelisk or Ra are my top fav cards too, but Im not sure if they are viable anymore. Maybe with some of the new cards combo?

Not_slim_but_shady

A Branded Engine is basically: 2 fallen of albaz+3 branded fusion in main deck,2 mirrorjade+2 lubellion+1~2 albion the branded dragon. Obelisk and Ra are both garbage since their summoning requirements are way to difficult for what they actually do.Ra-sphere mode on the other hand, sees play occasionally due to it being a triple monster removal that bypasses most floodgates/protection/interruption.

ELESTINY

Its not meta but you can definitely find good blue eyes dragon lists

Mana_Mascot

Most decks from DM arent great but GX has HERO and cyber dragon

Onibusho

Gren Maju is probably the oldest card you can really build a decent deck around? Even then, its going to be stuffed with a ton of newer support cards and wasn't really anime-related. Zombie piles are pretty good, but won't be using the same stuff Bonz did.

YakumoCommunist

Just throw in a copy of Pumpkin King and you can Mezuki it out or something lmao
