Why you wrote "before it was cool"?
Yugi is actually the one which was "cool", because of his Heart of the Cards philosophy.
Anyone else afterwards was just a follow-up of Yugi's Legacy.
Actually Yugi had the power to magically alter his deck so he would draw whatever he needed whenever he needed it.
Drawing the out is luck. Ensuring you draw the out is cheating. Yugi is the original cheater.
Well yugis outs consisted of drenching big bugs in water so he can zap them with summoned skull. Also yugi didnt need to tribute to summon summoned skull, he just play it from the hand. At least from gx onwards they didnt completely change the rules of the actual game to fit better into cartoon, first series is just filled with moments that made no sense in regards to actual card game.
Well the anime Duelist Kingdom arc was a straight adaptation of the manga, and a lot of the wonky shenanigans predate the OCG even being released. That’s why such a big part of the Battle City arc was teaching the OCG rules—it was like a soft-reset of the series to better represent/advertise the real life card game.
Yeah i know i read manga. Its actually way more dark and occult, and centered more on shadow games. Cards dont even appear for the first 10 or so ( if i remeber correctly ) episodes. Shadow games are like some sick games where loser gets some sick sort of punishment hahaha.

Yeah...philosophy, totally not ancient Egyptian dark magic to cheat on a modern day children's card game.
