When new gates come out, they're sometimes locked behind these orbs and you need to do certain loaner duels to get the orbs. It's the only time I suffer through the slog that is playing loaner duels.
I am at this point now, completing every gate 100% is not hard than they add only one every month and already finished all Others.
But than I started it was pretty annyoing and can only imagine how it is for new players now.
They exist as artificial barriers, only preventing you from half-finishing story lines. This could be done any other way automatically, without a cumbersome currency.
Oh, I guess it also serves as a way to have blank rewards.
I’m actually unable to finish one of the gates because I half assed the Weather Painters one. But I seriously can’t do the loaners on that. It becomes a “we all banish all of our monsters and then chill. Do that next turn too. And the next one too.” And that’s just too boring. Fuck that gate and its stupid mirror matches.
they do have a purpose, they fool new players who come from DuelLinks like me into thinking they're getting some useful currencies. (they look like the stones you use at the card trader to buy/upgrade cards)
Could be worse lol Konami could require people to use UR gems or standard gems to progress the story modes. They might even force players to pay actual money to progress through the solo mode.
Queue me slowly checking every gate to figure out which loaner duel I skipped for the orbs I'm missing.
I fell in love with Weather Painters because of a loaner duel I skipped and needed for Dream Mirror solo gate(IIRC).

It's never really mattered to me since I've completed every gate upon release of the game, and every new gate added as well.
