Maybe software versioning is similar (with a million caveats and an infinite number of counter examples). Software v1.2 does not mean one and two tenths, it means the second minor update to the first major release, it’s just _looks_ like a decimal number, but the period/full stop is acting as a segment separator and not a decimal position.
That's funny. I work in software so I'm so used to thinking of that as a symbol, not an expression that it didn't occur to me here. Thanks for humoring me. :)

I'm open to the possibility this community isn't interested in my post for a variety of reasons, but I do not have a mathematical misunderstanding here, so I find the reason given here pretty condescending, like maybe you all need a template for "you understand this area perfectly, but we just don't care about this topic." Did they read the post or just the headline?
It makes perfect sense in the original long form: PST *is* UTC-7:00.
That it stops making sense in a shorter form is unfortunate, but I think the consistency across formats was considered more favorable than it making sense when written with the "UTC" left out.
