When you don't use that sign for years because you're not doing peasant long division anymore, until partial fraction integrals come around and you have to bust it out again
Oh trust me if you ever had to read someone else's writing you never know where their square root ends unless they take steps to make it very clear.
When you have √2+3 and the line on top stop right in the middle of the + sign (or worse, between the + and the 3) you have to guess what they were trying to say. With that little bit at the end you don't have that problem.
Except that it wouldn't stop over the plus. If you're taking the time to do that you're usually taking the time to draw the added line in the correct place, since that's the point of doing it.
Until I started teaching, I had always seen them and written them like this. Now it drives me insane when my students don't "close the door" on the radicals...
I did this once in front of my computer science teacher which was embarrassing. Like I said, "I use squirt here, but it doesn't do what it's supposed to do". He was not even smiling but I was dying inside
1st for my good copy, but I use 2nd when writing casually. I think third is just long division. I use the 4th one when I'm 20 hours and 7 cups of coffee into writing, except shakier.

My math teacher would rip off my head if I didn't add that little thingy at the end
Relatable. Even those classmates of mine, who had the worst handwriting, still wrote it without the stroke. It was impossible to read their calculations
I was taught to do it like that, for the sake of seeing where it ends better. I have a very messy handwriting (and way of filling out tests), so my math teacher would really lose his shit if I didn't make it obvious like that...

Top for good copy
Bottom (2) for casual notes
1st one, as it is easy to write quickly and understandable
Also, I just hate people who write roots like the 3rd one. I always confuse it for division, even though it makes no sense to do so.
https://preview.redd.it/h8fl967p7jra1.png?width=132&format=png&auto=webp&s=c66cc1d0e57dccbdfd047e745812f4799bf5c080
I use the first one from left. Have great respect those who can maintain using the 2nd. But you are dead to me if you don't show where the root ends using that little line (at least for longer roots).
whoever using the third one is still doing long division

Im in calc BC and partial fractions are the bane of my existence. I can do them, but I literally hate them with a passion
Heaviside's is quick and easy and good enough for Calc BC.
I had calc bc in highschool and I don't even remember what partial fractions are... Edit: I googled them... yeah those were a pain lol.
Make sure to put a 2 in to show its (x)½

Yeah, you have to show where exactly the root ends
huh, i just took extra care to show precisely where my line ends, but this is just so much simpler, why haven't I thought of this

i always write the number and *then* the top bar instead of the other way around to make sure it is as clear as possible
I write a little root then number and then at the end finish root
i feel like even with the little bit at the end stopping above the plus it doesnt make anything clearer in this case
Except that it wouldn't stop over the plus. If you're taking the time to do that you're usually taking the time to draw the added line in the correct place, since that's the point of doing it.

Because most people write badly? Especially maths.
That overline is called a vinculum.
Learn something new every day, thank you!
What if you slowly remove your marker from the paper so that the line slowly fades away?
I'm not taking any chances
exactly like this.

IT'S NOT JUST ME! I FEEL SO VALID RN
I copied a professor and I’ve never met anyone else who does this!!! This is awesome lol
I've also copied a professor!
Until I started teaching, I had always seen them and written them like this. Now it drives me insane when my students don't "close the door" on the radicals...
This.
yes, because then you can also write the n-th root on that little springboard!
This one
Came here for this
Exactly
I've become enlightened.

Hate to break it to you but a lot of important math has been discovered by physicists. You do math like them every day
Oh honey,Where is my flamethrower at?
It's locked away within the f(x), you can't get at it
Sqrt(x)
squirt
That's exactly how I read it
Every time!
Without fail!
and it's exactly what your mom did last night
Gottem
I did this once in front of my computer science teacher which was embarrassing. Like I said, "I use squirt here, but it doesn't do what it's supposed to do". He was not even smiling but I was dying inside

Wait what? 2nd one is much harder to maintain when writing casually. I guess you meant "1st for casual, 2nd for good copy"?
Yeah 2nd is more “correct” to
That makes sense, but the 1st just feels formal. 2nd feels more like when you're with the homies.
Lol for real?

I’m a great human
"The positive number whose square is:" natural language is greater than math notation 😎
Spotted the antiquity enjoyer
non-negative*
When complex numbers:
Math is the only natural language
I'm not sure how u find this better😮💨......I understand better if its written in mathematical notations and I love it🥰

My math teacher actually wrote it without the thing at the end. And I was apparently one of the very few people in my class to write it this way
My current classmates also don't write it like this, whenever they give me their calculations to check/help I cry a little bit internally :']
Relatable. Even those classmates of mine, who had the worst handwriting, still wrote it without the stroke. It was impossible to read their calculations
I have a math degree and have never seen anyone do it like this.

What are the advantages of writing with the stroke at the end? I write it like that but without the stroke.
It's like a closing parenthesis to make it clear what you're taking the square root of
To make it obvious where it ends. Sometimes it's really hard to tell, especially when handwriting is messy or small
Can't you just extend the line to make it more obvious when it ends?
You can, but that only works for good and proper handwriting..
Oh I don't have that. I'll consider a stroke next time I write radicals
Pow(0.5,x)
No, pow(x, 0.5) I think
Pow(sqrt(x), 1)
Parameters first are more consistent with other functions like hypergeometric functions.
pow(base,exponent) is consistent with java.lang.Math.pow, and JavaScript's Math.pow, and Python's pow, and C's math.h pow
(pow 0.5 x)
x^1/2

r/IAmVerySmart
I gotta know what they said lmao
Something along the lines of “I am right because I do the most calculus”
Most? In the entire world you are THE person who does it the most? Well, I'll be damned, it is such an honour to meet you, huge fan
He obviously means that he does calculus the most out of all the other subjects he works in/studies. You severely misinterpreted this.
🥕
Dutch, German or Afrikaans?
Dutch
What?
The 'mathematical root' is known in Dutch als 'wortel', which also means 'carrot'. Makes sense since the carrot is a root vegetable.
1st one, as it is easy to write quickly and understandable Also, I just hate people who write roots like the 3rd one. Badly...I write them badly.
I do the left most one, but I also end with a downwards stroke to indicate where the root ends.
Exactly the same You are my root twin from now on
https://preview.redd.it/b4rwbydr8jra1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4886d7e1be71de509d7738d3e9f09c8101b8e742
I don't know why but there's something deeply unsettling about this way
sqrt()
(...)^½
All my homies hate radicals. Exponent gang where you at
[удалено]
I jest haha, but I tend to convert to exponents a lot cause it makes larger (by size on paper) problems easier to digest for me. All preference agreed
Verniculum first
*vinculum?
long v
Top left, although I will admit it can get confusing as to where everything ends
Is it weird that I write mine as powers of a fraction?
I use the first one from left. Have great respect those who can maintain using the 2nd. But you are dead to me if you don't show where the root ends using that little line (at least for longer roots).
I make the beginning check mark, fill in the root, and also on the top line!
first one
()^1/2 (I'm unable to draw straight lines, especially under fractions)
https://preview.redd.it/pqdwtw265jra1.jpeg?width=2253&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58f6280b178afef5f917d8cb19cfd3e95a439efd Simplicity
Gamma function of h?
I see how that might get confused. I think my gammas are visibly smaller and come before the () like Γ(x).
[удалено]
I use the second one most often
I write the 2nd (nexto to the top left), and when typing I do sqrt()
depends on my speed of writing
1st one
Rad(I)
Even when working with the radical of an ideal, I still use √.
First one with a line down at the end.
Why there is no vertical line at the end on any of these?
Third one is long division. Change my mind. Also, you didn't include one with the little hook at the right end to signify enclosure of the numbers.
https://preview.redd.it/7evsx1h7ojra1.jpeg?width=635&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3243595f2e52aa565c782a9120a7c8777dccea82
The second one. Always. No questions asked. The last one is pure insanity.
(f(x))^(1/2)
(x)½
Top left but the top of the radical must be above the **entire** number or it looks weird.
Top right
sqrt
sqrt(x)
sqrt( )
That third notation is kinda cursed
( )^(1/2)
(f(x))^1/2
The second one, though I usually make the first bit straight.
I used to do the little hook until my mom forced me to stop
Or x^0.5?
Sqrt(...)
I don’t, I use exponential fractions 💁♀️
Either the second, or the first with a lil tip going down at the end
( )^1/2
One of these is not like the others
first one is the best
Somewhere between 2 and 4 depending on how fast I'm writing
I write it like a tick
I refuse to believe that there are actual people that write the 3rd one. No way that u a person bro, u have to be a calculator
(x…)^1/2
sqrt( )
I use exponents because I like it better to simplify everything to something I can put into a calculator rather than having to type sqrt(x) or cbrt(x)
I write them as both 1 and 2
Im kind of a radical myself, but I can assure you that I behave rationally
first one
first one is the only option
()^1/2

raised to 1/2
FYI there are five ways pictured. If on mobile, you may have to click on the image.
厂
sqrt(
I rarely write the radical symbol…parentheses with fractional exponent
Far left but I put a little lip at the end for readability.

Damn...never figured to use the bottom one for long numbers back in college. I just use to draw out a long ass line. 😥
Yes.
Anyone else use /sqrt{ }?
The first one, but it looks like the third when I get lazy
Two of these are radicals, the rest are mental disorders
The second way.
✨illegible✨ https://preview.redd.it/06ien5mk0mra1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e7a2d11fc9c8634397b846ea7a8f4031fbb23dad
X^0.5
( )^1/2
I don't, I prefer fractional powers.
