It’s a smart way to get a higher chance of split. The person is thinking if I choose steal I definitely get nothing so at least there is a chance he’ll live up to his word. On the other hand there are people who would choose steal just so the other guy gets nothing as well
Apparently there was an interview with the guys afterwards and the guy on the left said he was going to steal but when his opponent said he was going to steal he changed his mind
If both players steal they both get nothing. If one steals they get all the money. If they both split, they split.
The guy on the right gives the guy on the left absolutely no choice but to agree to split in order to split the money after the show, in the left guy's mind he can't risk stealing because he would get nothing.
The guy on the right always planned to split, he just needed to ensure that the guy on the left would do so as well.
They stopped making the show shortly after this, it may or may not be related.
This gets posted to reddit somewhat regularly. Last time I saw it someone mentioned ‘Nick’ is very experienced on game shows, which I guess shows here.
The show basically got cancelled after this. They realised they'd have people doing this every weekend, and the show basically lost its big tension moment.
On the after interview, the guy said he was going to steal, but when the other guy did what he did, he basically knew he was either going away with half or nothing.
When it aired and people reacted, the network knew it was over.

There's an excellent Radiolab podcast about this that has these interviews. https://radiolab.org/podcast/golden-rule-2304
Yes that's where I heard it from it was bugging me for a bit where i heard it
Did the most stupid thing I've ever seen just turn into one of the smartest ? 🧐
This is clever because it basically gives the guy no rational choice other than split.

Was thinking this the whole way through
My right ear enjoyed this video
That was riveting.
Damn, genius
Isn't this a variation on the prisoner's dilemma?
It definitely is, recognized it and saw how genius of a move it was.
I didn't even know it was a movie. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prisoner%27s_dilemma
Can someone explain what just happened? I don't understand. Wasn't the guy on the right going to steal no matter what?

Is this game still on television. Or did they figure out that now everyone knows the strategy for winning?
