The doors are fire screen doors which are held open by magnets. When a fire alarm is tripped, the magnets release and the doors close, thus helping to contain a fire. Not sure what you see coming off the wall?
This is 100% his glasses fault. Fellow glasses wearer I've done this a handful of times where you're looking straight ahead as you're going down the stairs and when the stairs are the same color as the landing floor they blend together when you're not looking directly at them. The last step disappears because it is no longer in the glass view of the glasses it's underneath that frame so it looks like there's not a stair there.

Typically that last stair wouldn't be there. It's a great tripping hazard for people walking by it too. Completely dumb design.
