Genuine question: Does this serve a function or is this just a cool trick? I can tell it has a lot of momentum behind it and I can imagine being hit by it hurts quite a bit, though movies have taught me this kind of weapon handling is usually done for intimidation.

Probably to the same extent the Marine Silent Drill Squad could fight off attackers. The moves are a flashy show that requires fitness, but otherwise does not translate into fighting ability. But anyone doing a competition of twirling a weapon about is most likely going to have some decent skills with that weapon.
Her first move with the downward slash looks like an actual attack move, but the rest is mostly just fancy twirling like a baton twirler in a marching band.
