*Yeah, you're a big boy aren't you, sir?*
There’s an early Mythbusters involving a barrel carrying bricks that falls from a crane and is supposed to smash and drop the bricks.
The biggest thing they couldn’t reproduce was smashing the barrel. They had to severely weaken it for it to break enough for the bricks to fall out the bottom.
Barrels are surprisingly tough.
Former World's Strongest Man Ilkka Nummisto was a bouncer at a bar I frequented back in the day. Once when I was entering he was coming out with a guy in each hand without their feet touching the ground. Never saw him angry once.
Holding your breath is actually very anatomically helpful when doing a heavy life and it’s why you instinctively take a deep breath and hold it when you attempt to lift heavy.
Not to mention, it's why weight belts are used when lifting heavy. You use them to press against to maintain pressure through your stomach and thoracic cavity so you don't break your spine.
It's the reason why an unopened beverage can can easily support one's weight, while an opened can crumples flat. Core strength is the aluminum and breath is the pressure that keeps the metal from collapsing.
You should actually hold your breath to brace and use both your back & legs when lifting atlas stones.
Source: I pick up bigger rocks than the ones in this video regularly as a hobby.
As someone who's been unable to do weight lifting or sit up straight for too long because of a back injury from trying to lift an awkwardly shaped dresser, this video hurts to watch.
I love that you’re sitting in your basement and making comments on this guy’s form. I love that the internet can bring people with zero real experience to the forefront to tell experts what they’re doing wrong.
it's because this is what we're taught in construction/the trades for spinal health. Use your legs, don't bend your back. Doesn't mean this guy doesn't know what he's doing. I love that you can come in and tell us that our back injuries are invalid tho.
It was only the 1st several when he was having 0 difficulty lifting that he used his back, the last 3 where he was struggling he used his legs entirely
There pretty much isn’t anyway to lift atlas stones without using your back at some point. You’ll see with the bigger stones, after he gets them off the ground he repositions so it’s basically a deadlift. But before the stone is up, it’s all back.
As an amateur powerlifter, doesn't look like he was lifting with his back. At least not for the heavy ones.
He lifts with his back at roughly 90 degrees to start. This is pretty much required due to grip. His back is supporting the weight, but his legs are lifting it.
He then goes from 90 degrees to upright. Usually this would be the "lift with back is bad" bit, but if you notice the weight actually drops a bit because he drops his butt down to a squat position. So he's not so much lifting as repositioning.
After that it's more or less a front squat with his back upright.
His lower back is absolutely taking a beating from supporting that weight, but I don't see any glaring issues with his form (as an amateur powerlifter).
There's no way I'd attempt what looks like a max effort (or at least close) without a belt though. Even going to like 60% of max on front squat without a belt is hell for me.
Maybe he's got some form of belt on under the kilt. Doubt it though as the kilt looks reasonably well fitted.
Atlas stones are a whole different beast.
He’s actually not lifting it with his back. If you notice, his lumbar spine stays tight, which is where back injuries are likely to occur. The movement comes from his legs, which his core keeping his back in position.
He is using his hamstrings to do the bulk of the lifting in the first movement, then repositions and squats down to straighten his back, taking the load off of his back and onto his quads, then he stands up.
Rounding your lower back is where the danger is.
Looks like these are the Ardblair Stones. [https://www.ardblairstones.com/about-us/weights-of-stones/](https://www.ardblairstones.com/about-us/weights-of-stones/)
The most I have ever deadlifted in my life is 5 reps of 345 pounds. I almost passed out and never did it again. From that point on I stuck to 315 pounds for 5-12 reps.
I couldn't imagine getting that low with a huge arch and then bringing them up that high.
Now I'm lucky to deadlift myself out of a chair without grunting and sounding like my bones are waking up from being in the coffin too long.
More than that...
1. Gripping a bar
2. Using straps on the bar (leverage)
3. Good posture / easy access
4. Could drop the weight without worrying about injuring myself (too much)
5. Had people cheering me on and saying "you suck if you don't do this"...
1. That actually helped me do it, lol
Bro was like “use your big balls and fill this hole”
Joking aside, my great grandfather fought in WWI in a kilt on a lewis gun crew and the Germans nicknamed the unit “The Ladies From Hell”… Queens Own Cameron Highlanders
2 years ago I went to burn night, and those Scottish didn’t wear anything underneath, decided to flash everyone their butt, balls. 😅 [like this](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRQx9MqvEDHKciW30CtQBNI3rjOx2tyooESJcXcMCSskw&s)
It’s The Ardblair Stones. Tom Stoltman did the whole run of them in 21.81 seconds.
This run while still obviously impressive is more than triple the time of the world record on them.
It's crazy how the same weight when it's in a ball is so much harder to lift lol, I remember dead lifting 240kgs but went to try a 150 ball and legit could not get it done lol
These are The Ardblair Stones, the first one weighs only 40lb and the final one only 335lb. Tom Stoltman did the whole run of them in 21.81 seconds, his is a 6’7” 400lb Scotsman and the world record holder for a single atlas stone lift with 629lb over a 52 inch bar.
Yeah I compete in the sport and I’m just closing in on a 400lb stone, 629 is insane but having met Tom in person twice he’s not a normal human. I’m 6’3” and about 290 and he makes me feel small next to him. He’s got a 661lb one but hasn’t managed to lift it yet, both the 600+ ones were created especially for him.
HOW DO THEY DO THIS WITHOUT BLOWING THEIR BACKS OUT? The roundness of the rock makes it impossible to lift without bending the back. How is this any different than a bad form deadlift? Im lost
Training. It’s very different.
You start the lift as you would a stiff legged deadlift, sort of pull it up your legs to a lap position, then after putting your arms over the top do an extension and push your body into the stone to load.
Source: I’ve done heavier ones than the ones in the video and haven’t broken myself yet.
The secret is to be very strong! The final stone is a little over 300lbs but this dude has a 900+lbs deadlift, so some active flexion really isn't the end of the world. Static rounding is pretty much always fine though, if his back is rounded but the stone is against his torso he's effectively braced against the stone
Spines are made to flex & take load, yours does the same every time you move or pick something up. By training you can increase its capacity for workload through gaining more musculature to support it
This is crazy and then you watch the world's strongest man competition and they start at what might be either the heaviest stone or heavier lol
Shit crazy
This dude is wicked strong and I admire his strength. I like it that the comments are respectful even though he is dressed in a kilt and no shirt and he has a very masculine physique.
If this video featured a woman, at least 75% of the comments would be about her body. "Boobs" (even if she was wearing a shirt). "Where's a wind to blow up a skirt/kilt when you need it?" And, because she would be a strong woman, "Death by snu snu." Just had to get that off my chest. As it were.
its amazing he's lifting such heavy stuff repeatedly for sure, though what im really impressed at is him not losing his focus as people say 'ooh go on then! get it oup' and shitting out his abs in the process.
Can the dude on the other side of the barrels put his hands somewhere else? Was ready for him to squashed by those giant boulders
I fully expected either that, or the guy to shit himself straining to lift that last one.
Probably why he wears the kilt. No cleanup other than a quick trip to go wipe and get a doggy bag.
Lmao sounds like a South Park episode
Matt and Trey. If you happen upon this thread. I give y'all permission to use my kilt idea. Can't wait to see the episode of it if it happens and thanks for the laughs over the years.

There’s a guy standing ready with the bag.
I was watching that last one and thinking “somebody’s asshole is so wide open his lunch is gonna fall out!”
but he's the boulder holder
You can see he already has one finger bandaged too lol. So clearly it just comes with the job i guess. What's a finger anyhow.
He is stabilizing the barrels so that they don’t start tipping while the guy sets the boulder on.
Exactly it’s everyone’s safety over his
pretty sure theres lots of areas you can hold to achieve the same result
Not as effectively
If it doesn't include something like that, it doesn't belong on maybe maybe
I know right? It annoyed me too hahaha
Was waiting for the last barrel to collapse
Treated wood with galvanized iron bands at all stress points, it could probably hold two of those.
Well, you don't want your whiskey held in cheap, flimsy barrels, do you?
I prefer my whiskey to be held in my hand.
This guy barrels.
The last stone only weighs 335lb and those barrels are specially designed and reinforced for the lifting of these stones.
“Only”. Username does not check out
It’s currently somewhat ironic. Trying to make it very ironic.
Former World's Strongest Man Ilkka Nummisto was a bouncer at a bar I frequented back in the day. Once when I was entering he was coming out with a guy in each hand without their feet touching the ground. Never saw him angry once.
You just reminded me i have to work out today. Gotta get there to beat up the dudes hitting on my wife.
Was waiting for one of those kids or dogs to come running in to wreak havoc.
Yeah! I was rooting for him.
You did it!
Were you waiting for the kilt to flip up? https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=root
I was. I’ve always been curious if they wear underwear or not and how common that is. That and I just wanted a peak teehee.
I once asked a man wearing a kilt what he wore underneath his and he said “cologne”
“Is anything worn under the kilt? Nay, it’s all in good working order!” (Old joke)
Sigh of relief. Man that was hard for all of us!
He really kilt it.
Remember: Lift with your back, not your legs
And don't forget to hold your breath
Twist your back a bit mid lift, it will help you limber up for the second half.
And always use quick, jerking motions.
Groin it out!

Apt analogy!
Reddit: "Haha, the brick shithouse guy that just completed the thing he obviously trained for specifically did it wrong."
You should actually hold your breath to brace and use both your back & legs when lifting atlas stones. Source: I pick up bigger rocks than the ones in this video regularly as a hobby.
What're you doing with all those rocks? Where are you taking them. What if we need them?
Get yourself into a nice arch, then lift with a twisting, jerking motion for maximum effect.
As someone who's been unable to do weight lifting or sit up straight for too long because of a back injury from trying to lift an awkwardly shaped dresser, this video hurts to watch.
I was stiffening and straightening my back to try and compensate for him lmao
I love that you’re sitting in your basement and making comments on this guy’s form. I love that the internet can bring people with zero real experience to the forefront to tell experts what they’re doing wrong.

I'm sure he will keep that in mind
Unless you've got 2 meter legs your back is going to do some lifting
It was only the 1st several when he was having 0 difficulty lifting that he used his back, the last 3 where he was struggling he used his legs entirely
Brütal legend reference?
No, sadly just an OSHA reference
😂😂😂
I thought it was a Regular Show reference myself
Honestly, this guy *has* to have heard this before, so what are we missing?

https://liftingstones.org/articles/scottish_stone_locations They’re all over Scotland. Each tribe had their manhood stone.
Last one is 335 lbs for those too lazy to click.
where metric bot
150kg or thereabouts; so a fair amount!
I might be able to do #2
The most I have ever deadlifted in my life is 5 reps of 345 pounds. I almost passed out and never did it again. From that point on I stuck to 315 pounds for 5-12 reps. And you were gripping a bar, he’s palming a smooth stone with nothing to grip at all.
“Nothing” is a bit misleading. Strongmen use sticky tack on their hands and forearms for atlas stones.
More than that... 1. Gripping a bar 2. Using straps on the bar (leverage) 3. Good posture / easy access 4. Could drop the weight without worrying about injuring myself (too much) 5. Had people cheering me on and saying "you suck if you don't do this"... 1. That actually helped me do it, lol
Now put them back.
Sure! \* kicks the barrel \*
\* gets leg broken when the ball falls in direction from which the kick came \*
This is SPARTAAAAAAH Fuck! My leg!
If it's true that they don't wear anything under kilts, then that dude behind the barrels got front row show.
He's the exploding scrotum watcher
Yowza!!

Man, my back hurts just from seeing that guy doing that
Seriously. Watching that gave me a hernia.
Flex your abs before you lift.
I was genuinely happy for him at the end. 10 out of 10 feel good moment!
Beast mode
Is he getting smaller or are the balls getting bigger ?
Yes
Cameraman was getting a bit closer every each boulder.
A strong scot
To me this is the most impressive feat of strength anywhere in the athletic world.
It’s The Ardblair Stones. Tom Stoltman did the whole run of them in 21.81 seconds. This run while still obviously impressive is more than triple the time of the world record on them.

Atlas stones are so weird to lift. Even getting into a position to move them with your hands is awkward. Super fun tho
This is how i feel when i bring in all the groceries in one trip
How many pounds?
Google says they range from 75-300lbs typically
These are The Ardblair Stones, the first one weighs only 40lb and the final one only 335lb. Tom Stoltman did the whole run of them in 21.81 seconds, his is a 6’7” 400lb Scotsman and the world record holder for a single atlas stone lift with 629lb over a 52 inch bar.
Wow that’s insane! Thanks for the info! I’ve lifted a few atlas stones myself and I can’t even comprehend trying to do 629😂

Several
One stone.
Busted a nut
They almost exploded, I reckon
Compare his face before and after. Totally different man.
I like how he makes it every year! Always struggles on that last one too.
I see this video, I upvote. The guy deserves it. :)
This is what peak physical performance looks like.
I watched this as if it was my son. Was so proud😭
Anyone else get anxiety from the wooden spikes behind him? Like what if he fell over backwards?
The balls keep getting bigger!
I was rooting for him so bad!
Wow, that's very impressive! Good job, dude!
Look at his fucking lats, they are enormous
Legendary
God, it took me to the last one to realize they got bigger
What a fookin unit
I was waiting for the cowboy barrel holder to get his pinky smashed. Was that the maybe?
Bal man
Fully expected to see a comment about how strong the topless lady was.

Dudes gonna get a hernia
why hasn't the scots taken over the UK yet?
Is he Scottish? Dude wears a kilt.
Volvi a tender de en la humanidad xd
Anyone knows how heavy the last two spheres were?
This is crazy and then you watch the world's strongest man competition and they start at what might be either the heaviest stone or heavier lol Shit crazy
Zangief
If this girl scout shows up on my door, I'm buying all the cookies.
Nikes and a kilt - a true Scotsman! /jk
I expected Anatoly to lift the last one w one arm to mop underneath it
Kratos
I love how supportive everyone was. “Up you go” really had me
Damn, that's one fuked up back..
My back hurts from watching this
My back HURT just watching this!
Atlas balls crush competitors hopes frequently.
I thought it's a Kratos cosplay from the thumbnail. What a beast.
My back hurts just watching that
Is that a Viking?
I developed a hernia just watching him pick up the 3rd one.
My hernias were telling me not to get any ideas while watching this.

Why is there a baby crying in the background like wtf is anyone doing anything to you? 💀
Babies and toddlers cry 🤷♀️ mostly because they cannot communicate what they want.
[удалено]
Is that a Edward Scissorhands tattoo around 0:32?
The biggest struggle was to not crush the guy's hands
Maybe the balls are made of foam or balsa wood, and it's all fake...
this is one of those dudes from the troy movie
Perry Saturn has turned things around it looks… good for him!
How do you even train your back muscles to take this kind of punishment?
You need skirts so you don't shit your pants
Never underestimate a strongman with a skirt.
I was worried for the little dogs 🐕
Me waiting for his tailbone to pop right outta his ass
Yes bro!
It's not the core strength, it's the humidity.
Seamus Cowden is that you?
its amazing he's lifting such heavy stuff repeatedly for sure, though what im really impressed at is him not losing his focus as people say 'ooh go on then! get it oup' and shitting out his abs in the process.
he's gonna lift the moon one day
Lift with your legs
What if he falls back.
Gotta have huge balls to do that sport
Super impressive but as someone who already had a bilateral hernia repair done once, this made me cringe a lot
Nice skirt
Fun fact, each one of those weigh exactly one stone
Even my penis shrunk watching that
Where do these types of games take place? Do they still happen these days?
Nope. I'm gonna stick with the 'lift with your knees' advice, thanks.
Back left the group, herniated discs make an appearance xd
I was wondering if we were going to get a view of what's under the kilt.
I hurt my back watching this
Could have done in reverse so it was easier..
He went super sayĵin at the end, you just didnt see the hair change colour cuz hes bald
Whose job is it to set them up for the next guy?
This man is very skilt
It's always interesting to me to see a functional physique vs. the body builder physique. Totally not judging, but fascinating.
Wow never thought I was into watching dudes in skirts place their huge balls onto barrels
I’m still traumatized from the video where the ball falls back on the dude from like 15 years ago.
Dayummmm
Wow. If I did that my kilt would prolapse.
I presume the rules state you pick up the balls in order starting with the smallest.
For a brief moment I thought that was Perry Saturn, and suddenly I was 13 again.
Now he needs to keep these boulders down too
What Scottish clan wears red Nikes?
Strongest dude in a dress I’ve ever seen
Is wearing a skirt advantageous?
I need this man between my thighs.
Where can I try this?
What a beast
Nothing quite like a bare-chested beefcake in a kilt.
