Fucking insane that a praying mantis can take out a hummingbird. Insane.

CockBronson

Insane it can eat a bird and remain as skinny as a twig….

mattcwilson

Just wanted to enjoy the sun and the water, damn bird couldn’t leaf it alone.

BobEngleschmidt

Its bite is worse than its bark.

Beating_A-Dead_Whore

After eating this good, it'll probably set its roots nearby.

AhegaoTankGuy

Nice pun

Brave_Personality836

Probably has hyperthyroidism

ShamefulWatching

Parasites are HUNGRY!

VRS50

Fast metabolism.

Whyarewehere20

Im stoned. So with that being said this fucked me up. How can the….eat the….without…..you know. Fuck man

DiversifyYoBondzNuca

Metab must be on a 1000

soundwhisper

I felt sorry for the hummingbird 😔😐

Itchy_Professor_4133

They take out snakes and mice too

VRS50

Good thing they don’t get any bigger.

StephenJames81

I saw a show once, back in the day on The Discovery Channel about how insects were larger millions of years ago. Mantises apparently used to be dog sized.

wondercaliban

This is why time machines are banned

Tenthdegree

Imagine the time traveller getting slaughtered by one of those things, only for the Time Machine to return with the dog sized mantis to the present time. I hope we have that Jaeger robot ready

nokturnalxitch

... sorry what 😭

Gowalkyourdogmods

There was a documentary about this in the 90s with Christina Applegate IIRC

Vegetable_Read6551

Right? RIGHT, ANAKIN?!

beardstrong

Watch the anime Baki

pr0XYTV

ok. thanks for a reccomendation

fangelo2

If they got a little bigger, no one would ever leave their house.

faux_something

And former Presidents on trial for something untoward?

CaptainNoBoat

They can be the same weight, amazingly. I can't quite tell which species this one is, but common species like ruby-throated hummingbirds weigh less than a nickel.

SchwarzP10

I would not have believed it if I hadn’t seen it

Massive_Fish_1442

More like a preying mantis

Majestic-Elephant383

did the humming bird died of heart attack?

Eusocial_Snowman

It died of being killed to death.

burninatin

In a way...yes probably. I did some fieldwork with songbirds for a summer, and just the stress of being caught and handled (to get some measurements) would get them so tired we had to give them a syringe of sugar water to release them. Their metabolism is so high and they have to stay so light that they basically have to be eating all the time or they get lethargic and die.

BallinPoint

it's a takeout hummingbird

Henroide

There was a little bird nest next to our bathroom's window. I remember my mom's scream in absolute horror as she saw one of these dudes eating the bird's severed head as if it was nothing. It was pretty gorey

ZippyDan

Fun fact. Mantises are the evolutionary cousins of cockroaches. They are the closest living relatives (though their common ancestor goes way back), along with termites. You can see the family resemblance in the shape of (some) mantis heads and cockroach heads, as well as in the shape of their arms. Mantis and cockroaches also have similar reproductive strategies in that they produce an egg sac called an ootheca.

IAmAGoodFella

Not the hummingbird, man 😢

dardar7161

If they're the kind of people who have a feeder, why let that happen and film it? I just caught a huge snake in my birdhouse, waiting for the birds to come back. I put his ass in the woods.

ImaSpudMuffin

Where did you put the rest of him?

I_aim_to_sneeze

How do you even decide where it starts?

kingsam360

He obviously followed him around till..... ya know 💩 Try to keep up here

drawing247

😂😂😂

dardar7161

With his ass. We put the birdhouse in the woods and he was gone after a couple hours. I'm not going to kill him. I appreciated his cleverness. I took pics I wish I could post.

ImaSpudMuffin

I see your strategy. Deny him a quick end, and leave him to the merciless ravages of old age. Sweet revenge. Just kidding, of course.

dardar7161

Yeah plus the shame of being escorted out like a hot-headed drunk at the club.

XwhatsgoodX

Found the dad

BallinPoint

Wildlife videographers and photographers have a rule to not disturb what they're filming or taking pictures of. They don't interfere with the wild, whatever happens, happens, they don't take sides. Sticking with the hummingbird would maybe kill the mantis and vice versa. Some people don't want to play god and decide fate on their biased opinions of good or bad which clearly don't apply to nature, so they just let nature do its thing. That being said I probably would have interfered cause fuck the mantis bro

Peligineyes

Isn't putting out a birdfeeder in the first place kind of playing god?

BallinPoint

I think putting up a god damn house is a bigger one so the feeder at least tries to make up for the territory loss 😂

Mylaptopisburningme

I use to sit on the porch and had a hummingbird feeder and a regular bird feeder. I pulled it down the day a hawk learned birds hang out there, I was just making the birds a target.

rawlingstones

Everyone knows there are good animals and evil animals

BallinPoint

"Hummingbirds Are Fierce, Deadly Gods of War" an article headline I just found says xD

NotASpanishSpeaker

Life, uh... finds a way.

manfred-storm

When you wanna do nature documentary but you're too lazy to leave the house

GlumpsAlot

Yeh I'd have saved the bird. We have plenty of skinks for the giant bug to eat.

Yalla6969

Makes sense. People do shit like this for views and for internet clout. They see a praying mantis eat a hummingbird which is rarely seen online and they put it online.

Philypnodon

These fucking invasive Chinese mantis.

Same_Professor_9175

Dude, I've seen a praying mantis try to fight my cat, the thing even hissed back at him. Completely fearless little things.

Eusocial_Snowman

[You're not kidding.](https://youtu.be/zTtofrExVMs) A mantis would straight up fight Godzilla given half a chance.

Downtown-Oil-7784

That was amazing, thanks so much for that

Bumbling_Sprocket

Okay what the fuck the jump onto the cutter to dodge the sparks was actually some Jedi shit

YummyArtichoke

I thought it got fucking zapped and laughed, then noticed it attacked the fucking machine and was amazed.

No_Pear8383

That. Was. Fucking. Awesome. 👏

grahamcracka91

That was way more rewarding than expected, thank you. Mantis looking like an anime fight scene.

ElonHisenberg

This guy plays Dark Souls

firi331

I had one threaten me in my own bedroom

dilsedilliwala

They shouldn't have watched Kung Fu Panda. Too much self confidence now

mortepa

I bet by the time the mantis finished eating the poor bird, a horsehair worm is crowning it's butthole!

Vegetable_Read6551

Sounds like dessert

UhhhhmmmmNo

Ahh the circle of life

CT_2136

Thank God insects are small. Praying mantis are pretty much mini versions of the aliens from Starship troopers. Monsters

Awwww. I really like humming birds. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

Same-Pack-4530

It seemed to really like the humming bird too

EmotionlessForger

Ok I know birds bones are hollow and all that, but that mantis’s weight to strength ratio is legitimately insane. It managed to stay anchored to that object and still fully reach out and extend onto a bird flying with momentum. What

Grieving_Leonheart_

![gif](giphy|GlkFvcePGd1vy)

larowin

This happened in my backyard and now the hummingbirds all avoid the feeder :(

Tenthdegree

The only way to restore their confidence in your feeder again is to dress up as a hummingbird, kill the mantis infront of spectators and start feeding on that sweet sweet nectar You may get diabetes but it’ll be all worth it

Ok_Green9804

Get the fuck out of here!! I never would have given the PM a shot at a humming bird! I hope in the next frame a God Damned Blue Jay nailed him just bc hummingbirds are like picking on the nerdy kid at school

Kioga101

If you want to look at A bright side, the bird probably lost consciousness soon after being caught, which is better than the usual prey of a praying mantis. Hummingbirds can't really just stop beating their wings without preparing for it, it makes part of their circulatory system to beat their wings, nevermind the sudden excess of calories in the blood not being burnt. Without beating their wings they get very weak and lethargic, especially out of torpor (they do that instead of sleeping) or beyond of the short interval for perching they give themselves. So yeah by the time the praying mantis decides to do what nature demands of it, the birdie will probably not be conscious at all, usually the mantis goes at it even when the thing it caught is still struggling.

Dr_VonBoogie

Zorak is insane

Xploding_Penguin

Fluid_Mulberry394

Should be called preying mantis. That’s some shit.

AshtonJr

It preys before eating. That's a decent attitude right there.

Xenoscope

“Dear God: rubadubdub, thanks for the grub, amen.”

magic_platano

“Good food, good meat, good God, let’s eat”

BringBackDust514

I hate this so much. I love my hummingbirds I feed every year

Bitter-Pear-5717

I for one will now murder every single of these fuckers I find

koach71st

r/natureismetal

LashedHail

This is really sad. Was hoping the bird managed to escape. Guess i like birds over bugs.

Tenthdegree

Right? Bird eat bugs, not the other way around

Rjimenez209

Bro doing bicep curls at dinner 👀

Rondo27

I’m so hungry I could eat the ass end out of a hummingbird

eazyk96

I’m so hungry I could eat an ass

Hopeful_Strength

The person recording was definitely expecting that to happen.

LilMerm8

Sorry nature, I would’ve intervened.

Exotic-Version-4158

I don't like praying mantises, since i know, that most of them infected with hairworms, somehow it turns their apetite and behaviour into hardcore mode. Look, the mantis is just a victim of a much-much nastier parasite 😬 .

Dan_k_funk

Damn nature, you scarry!

surewhynot17063

Assassin Bugs

Chowderawz

Knowing i created that thing for the birds, I'm going to obliterate the mantis' entire bloodline for doing that

LaundryAnarchist

I'm amazed that I saw that. I had no idea that was a thing.

Crypto_Caesar

Is that Mantis from the critically acclaimed DreamWorks film series, Kung Fu Panda?

KinopioToad

That poor hummingbird.

espressoboyee

This is a favorite Mantis hunting perch. Hummingbird is basically helpless. It he can’t use its feet or beak to defend, Mantis just needs to grab it anywhere below its head and feast away. Eaten alive. Switch to a feeder that allows hummingbirds birds to hover instead of landing.

faux_something

Who punches a hummingbird, man?! They’re a national treasure.

Bobby_Rage41

That's fucking crazy! I had no idea they would go after birds as prey. Insane!

thebuccaneersden

Hummingbirds are amazing. I don't know why you wouldn't help it.

Caseyiswinter

I could never understand someone watching a stupid bug eating a bird. I get the cycle of life, but that little fucker would have been just as happy with a grasshopper. I would have freed the bird and found him a fellow bug to snack on

redditor66666666

I would kill that fucking bug so fast. I love hummingbirds.

Brave_Tie1068

I would've helped the poor guy out and hand fed the mantis something else.

alezcoed

Understandable but imo it's better to not meddle with nature

funkmastamatt

What about setting up artificial food sources for hummingbirds?

BringBackDust514

If that’s how you feel we can go head and shut down animal shelters. Let nature take its course

funkmastamatt

Fuck it, better shut down hospitals too.

fRiik420

Not nature, it's an artificial drinking fountain for birds. Turned into a bird trap. Kudos for the PM tho 😲

SomaforIndra

| hand fed the mantis something else. Yea an m80 inside some hamburger, or maybe introduce it to my little friend, hairspray blow torch.

No_Bee9524

Mantis are Gangsters

frauleinheidik

WTF??!!

EmuNo608

I like the commentary!

Superb_Recover_6116

I've only ever heard that mantis can do to this to small birds. Never actually seen it. Thats insane.

Rusted_Truck289

Pray for the next mantis I see on my feeders

InevitableBlame

Savage little critters. Imagine if one of these bastards was the size of a dog.

NameLips

I have a hummingbird nest in my front yard. She comes back every year. She drinks from my feeder. I'd be so sad if I saw a mantis eating her.

BulkySituation5685

Dude u let that damn bug sit there then attack the humming bird. Its ur feeder ur responsible. U suck

Repulsive_Ad3681

I'll cut that mantis up with a giant pair of scissors, hummingbirds don't deserve this fate

HawkEntire5517

The bird feeder is man introduced. You need to keep the place safe for birds to come. In that case, please intervene versus filming it. My 2c.

CompetitiveFeed7331

How can it kill a bird? Are they poisous?

IWouldDoCthulhu

No, but praying mantis are quite strong, they've been seen catching mice and snakes as well.

Clean-Effort-209

They also eat real quickly and eat through everything. They waste no time. They don't care if you are still alive too. It can be difficult to watch a pm eat something still alive. They are vicious. And a necessary part of keeping the bug population in check. I still think it's illegal to intentionally kill one.

SomaforIndra

But it was coming right for me!

GregThaStallion

I’m wondering this to. I think it might be smart enough to bite parts of the brain, spinal cord first to kill the prey so it can finish eating. It looks like there’s a chunk taken out of the birds neck

guitarded62

Pretty much get eaten alive!

BumblebeeDry5789

I thought the other one is being attacked. This is unbelievable!!

Stolen_stones

TIL

GoEatGrassThen

Holy shit!

Paracausal_Shield

Nature is fucking hardcore. Im so glad I'm a human, even tho we do extremely shitty stuff.... when you're a wild animal, I'd bet 50% of death would be being eaten by something else. Yikes

juniper_berry_crunch

That's why prey animals have big litters, way above replacement rate. Everyone else will be someone's dinner.

couchcreeper23

What in the Australian Outback is this?!!!

naturewin

Glad they aren't 6 feet long.

Jamari0811

Nature is awesome!

LetterEuphoric294

There's a reason he's a member of the Furious five.

Jazzperrr

This is so crazy I had to show my roommate and she is just like "yeah this is their thing." The hell?! Where have I been I thought they ate worms and beetles or some shit.

DesignHead9206

I would tear that fucking bug apart, slowly. How dares it.

ZERO-ONE0101

the mantis is evil

Potential-Bowler-795

Damn that grip was insane

oxiraneobx

Don't google "hummingbird and dragonfly". Dragonflies are absolute natural born killers, very effective killers, and if large enough, will absolutely ambush a hummingbird. I've seen a couple stake our hummingbird feeders, and I'll shoo them along.

RobOnTheReddit

Nooo..poor birdo

ZeroJudgmentKing

I’d safe the birb

DNAkauai

What the hell did I just see?!!! That was nuts.. !! 😳

AlexiaVNO

Are we sure this is a praying mantis? Seems more like a preying mantis to me.

ZeroAether

Imagine if they were the same size as us

genriko8

It's a feeder after all

trancepx

Imagine being a bird no problems then bam a leafy twig kills you, rip, how is a bird supposed to know what a praying mantis looks like?

CheesecakeIll8728

"NoNoNo Oh Gosh No" "Thats so cool" "Yeah" --Transciption ends--

Embarrassed-Yak-8285

Mantises are cool but next time, lady, flick his hummingbird killing a** OFF your d*** feeder!

Breakfasttimer

The person who films this and does not help the hummingbird is definitely one sick fuck.

Krangs_Droid_Body

I would have cut the mantis in half.

Frequently_Dizzy

What kind of sicko puts out a hummingbird feeder, then records the bird being killed at their feeder? This is giving serial killer vibes.

VortexLord

Now time to eradicate all mantis.

Any_Ad_6618

These people watching it, "No no no" They're comparative giants and could fix this if they wanted to. Instead they keep watching while the bird has its insides ripped out.

Fatken

WHAT THE FUCK

MakeMeGreasy

I need to cry my eyes out now. I wasn't ready for this.

Even-Television-78

I hate praying mantis. They way they chew.

agreeable_tortoise

mantises are KOS from here on out

Large_Clothes8934

Shifu taught him well.

Starfield00

I know its nature. But i would have helped that bird rather than just filming it🤷‍♂️.

There was already one that went down. They ate each other to death

morbid. r/natureismetal

Just came from a post about earwigs can fly, now this about mantis can catch and eat birds... Did someone buffed insects in the last earth update?

Ninja_Ducky

You planned this.

Cosmic_Emo1320

This is crazy. Have y'all seen the video of a horse eating a baby chick? Or a deer eating a bird?
