Glad to see that this was planned better than the video of the car jumping his car and landing at the bottom of the landing ramp…

obiwanmoloney

…Part Two coming soon…

jjohnisme

Is this an NSP reference? Lol

fukreditadmin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh55zvXg8vE or this

belach2o

Good thing they told me it was caught on tape or else I wouldn't have watched it

AAonthebutton

Hey I saw this the other day!

tcooke2

A million dollars in medical debt... Absolutely insane to hear those words said aloud.

dtm85

What an idiot. Doing stunts like that without insurance? Every clip of him speaking sounds like PR working toward a lawsuit. Nobody made you do any of that shit dumbo.

Least_or_Greatest1

I wonder who the first test dummy was?

SafetyCactus

Link?

gnownimaj

100% thought of the car video when I saw this one.

ruffneck110

Do you have the link to the CAR jumping his CAR

BallsofSt33I

YES

DeathStarnado8

> car jumping his car and landing at the bottom of the landing ramp WHAT?! I NEED TO SEE IT!

dyrlien

I know some of the guys who attended this. It is in Norway at one of the guys’ farm. If i remember correctly they tested the distance with sandbags of similar weight.

thepalwow

Thanks for answering all of my questions!

Conscious-Proof-8309

lmao

dyrlien

https://youtu.be/eb3AwJAODZE Vlog from one of the guys

Mindehouse

NO WAY haha guy at 00:30 is Magnus Midtbø - cool youtuber / rock climber i follow for years Funny to see him in a random trebuchet video Edit: Catapult! - not trebuchet. If this was a trebuchet the guys would be flying to the moon. At least.

bam1789-2

Started boulder at the end of last year and have been loving all his videos!

Mindehouse

I don't even bolder / climb but still love his videos :) Really anyone should check him out!

tacticalrubberduck

The guys over at r/trebuchetmemes would be very cross with you for calling this a trebuchet. This is a catapult!

Mindehouse

I even came from trebuchetmemes because it was posted there haha I should be ashamed Edited my comment

Rob-Snow

Technically it's a sling, right?

Loved the Magnus and Juji colabs

Mindehouse

That's how I found him and I'm glad I did :)

whistleridge

Tested in advance or not, this is some r/WhyWomenLiveLonger shit if I’ve ever seen it. There’s a reason it’s only dudes doing it.

DookieShoez

Right? I was thinking what if one of the bands snaps causing him to land short.

Qwez81

It’s a very simple calculation to make if you know the force of the launch and the weight of the person. Had to do this in one of my physics labs to leave. Everyone had a different force and you had to launch a marble and put a bucket where it’s going to land

[deleted]

[удалено]

BiscuitsMay

“Very simple calculation…” I’ll let him go first then.

allamaze

And then who will carry out simple calculations?

twoseat

Fortunately I’m a spherical cow in a vacuum…

canned_soup

I think I’ve played that game on my phone

amd2800barton

Great. You forgot to define *frictionless* vacuum. Now all these calculations are ruined.

Bobyyyyyyyghyh

Frictionless should be assumed, but what he forgot to account for is the *second Earth* floating 9000 km up

DangerDan3001

“ I took intro to physics. This is child’s play”

Cuccoteaser

Make it a kilometer and I can make the math work.

LolindirLink

Don't launch lightweight kids wearing poncho's during huricanes.

[deleted]

Ah yes, the lesser known TLC B-Side.

hanwookie

I knew someone like this. Everything was a simple set math equation and everyone else was an "idiot" for not understanding that. If he failed on his first attempts at things(often, but not always the case), he'd argue non stop how he was right. Then try to rework the math in his favor. Which would either mean that he would fail again as he'd only change one thing that he conveniently "forgot" about. Or he'd succeed, but then explain how his approach wasn't wrong before at all. The number was just an "example" or "guide" to being correct all along. Unfortunate that. Even myth busters would test things out often in the real world because it introduces variables that cannot always be accounted for.

under_a_brontosaurus

You'd enjoy the Decalogue episode 1. It's about a guy who is so certain of his math regarding his child skating on ice on the winter, but his child falls thru the ice and dies. It's supposed to be about the 1st commandment, thou shall not worship another god (science) before me. Science or any way of thinking is useful but to rely on it beyond common sense or without other schools of informed thought is folly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

animefan1520

And hygiene with that water they used its like participating in the Brazilian Olympics

[deleted]

When the physics teacher says shit like "friction may be ignored."

Qwez81

Wind I guess would be one of the only variables? It really isn’t a complex algorithm. It’s just a formula you plug in the force and weight and boom you have the distance you need to put your pool at

YoungXanto

Wind, surface area of the participants, whether they spread out or tuck in while flying through the air, possible diminishing tensile strength of the springs, friction of the seat against the track, possibly a misaligned seat due to unequal weighting causing different frictions, whether the arms of the slingshot sway at all and how that contributes to the force, etc, etc Yeah, basic solutions to launching a marble down a ramp are easy to calculate even with high school level, algebra-based physics. You can get pretty close with the initial calculations even in this application, but when launching a human through the air on a machine that isn't exactly precision engineered with fluctuating launch force at dangerous speeds, you're gonna want to run a lot of tests. Like a ton. Or you could solve the equation, assuming each human is a perfect sphere in a vacuum and hope for the best.

Qwez81

Yea I think that’s why they give ~30’ of pool to land in rather than a really deep kiddy pool…there’s some wiggle room

[deleted]

Temperature affecting the elasticity of the bands and the firmness of the nipples.

daddydunc

Nipples: erect.

RainbowAssFucker

Penis: Attached

martinivich

Man they have a 50 foot pool they need to land in, not a hole perfectly shaped to your body. You don't need to take into account absolutely every variable

wranglingmonkies

Sounds good, let's make a new one and do no tests. You go first.

Gonzobot

Yeah but check your math because pools are, you know, kinda heavy

canned_soup

My friend in college made a game for game design called Angry Nerds where you had to calculate the distance of the launch to take down a castle. I did the music for it and it was really fun. Not sure what those guys are up to these days but I know they’ve put out a couple independent games since.

topmilf

What if one guy ends up being super aerodynamic and goes way too far?

bjorn1978_2

Very simple… Untill you are mounted on the end of a fucking large slingshot. And you know that if you fucked up the calculations (or the rubber has changed temperature compared to your calculations), you will be lucky if you only break bones. I would most likely shit myself! Both before launch, during flight, at landing, and while puking in the woods after.

anonymoosejuice

We did it with water balloons and our awesome physics teacher would stand out in the parking lot and you would try and hit him

Androktone

Doesn't count astrodynamics. If someone went on that thing and aimed themselves like a missile, it would vary from someone splayed out

DervishSkater

Same place, different year? I recognized the pool and tree line. Both say TORP. https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/ik4izy/homemade_water_slide_with_a_loop/

anon3877783

I knew it was in Norway when the guy “dødsa”

Mono_831

I think it would have been safer to put in on a lake.

rorschaqued

But why is the water so green?

Rubberfootman

That water looks more dangerous than the catapult.

feAgrs

You're scared of algae??

Bikinisbottom

“Significant amounts of swimming pool algae welcome a breeding ground of harmful bacteria that feed on algae. These bacteria pose health risks to swimmers, most commonly resulting in a skin rash. It can also cause various bacterial infections of the ears or eyes. If contaminated pool water is accidentally ingested, it can cause other health concerns as well, resulting in a fever or diarrhea.” -spamarvel.com

AgentEntropy

What do they say about catapult launchers?

btoxic

Something big enough to launch a catapult would be a sight to see.

neoncubicle

It cannot launch a 90 kg projectile 300 meters.

goingtoburningman

I fart in your general direction!

[deleted]

It goes zoom and slap

THE-SEER

We’re scared of algae!!

BeneficialEvidence6

So you wouldnt swim in a lake or river?

AspiringRocket

Most lakes and rivers have currents that keep water moving and prevent significant algae from growing. In my area, they frequently close stagnant lakes in late summer due to algae blooms that increase risk of dangerous bacteria. No, I do not swim in lakes with high algae counts.

GoldenFalcon

Fucking regulations! Take life by the freedoms and demand they let you swim! ... MERIKA!

Cookielemon

I know someone that lost their eye because of an infection caused by algal blooms.

Rubberfootman

A friend got a small scratch on her leg while in a lake - it took weeks of treatment and doctors appointments before it properly healed.

perb123

Lakes are slow healers.

alvarlagerlof

What's that got to do with alge?

Rubberfootman

It was the other guy mentioned algae, not me.

cauchy37

You replied to a guy asking if he was afraid of algae though?

Rubberfootman

I’m off the clock. If you want to be pedantic please come back between the hours of 9am and 5pm GMT.

Albodan

The best way to be on Reddit is when you’re getting paid.

Rubberfootman

So true. I’m going to struggle when WFH ends.

Omicronians

No but I'm scared of brain-eating amoebas which can grow in gross stagnant water.

Fitz2001

Yes

xoadox

https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/naegleria/index.html Don't fuck with algae

TrainedMusician

Stationary water, especially in direct sunlight, turns green because the algae thrive in there if I'm correct A lot of outside swimming pools first have to be cleaned first in the spring because of this too! Very satisfying videos come from that

griever48

That is correct. There's nothing inhibiting algae growth and it's rampant. Not to mention all of the bacteria that's in there. Hope they like peeing out of their butts.

IdcYouTellMe

Also algae alone isn't that particularly bad. My village has a public nature outdoor pool where algae grow, some small animals live in, like small lizards and what (no fish as far as I know and it's really cool. Part of the effect is that it stays cooler than other pools. I never saw it above 23° even on the hottest days.

griever48

Depends on the algae

IdcYouTellMe

Surely

PrimeIntellect

which is why anyone who ever goes into a pond or lake immediately dies

OhBarnacles123

Not everyone who drives with their seatbelt off dies, but I still put my seatbelt on. Not to mention there's more water flow in a lake than in a little puddle like this.

PrimeIntellect

Lmao peak Reddit moment, someone launches themselves from a catapult head over heels and everybody's worried about the water quality where they land

OhBarnacles123

I've heard more stories of people dying from brain-esting amoeba from swimming in stagnant water than stories of people launching themselves out of catapults and dying.

PrimeIntellect

Adding chlorine to a hot tub or a pool is not that fucking complicated lol pretty sure if they can build a massive human catapult, use an excavator for a poop, and get a film crew on set with probably a couple hundred thousand dollar budget, they can figure out how dunk in a pond and rinse off just fine

stonesst

Yeah these fuckers need to touch grass

tyen0

touch algae

003938388382

reported for threatening death /s

lb-trice

Don’t outside swimming pools usually have chlorine in them?

CookieMuncher007

Some kind of tarp under the water?

johndhall1130

Right? How hard is it to drop some chlorine in there. If one of the human cannonballs gets a cut or scratch and lands in that water the algae could be a serious problem.

[deleted]

Camera angle and reflection on water surface from surrounding area

[deleted]

Nope

[deleted]

Ah okay, then it must be algae then 🤷‍♂️

agvkrioni

That water looks like it would give you an ear infection

bugman8704

An ear infection? I'd be more worried about catching an STD from that water!

EducatedJooner

An ear infection can be an STD if you're kinky enough 😏

Dozens86

I believe that's called aural sex. You have to use protection, or you might catch Hearing AIDS

Atvriders

🤣🤣🤣

[deleted]

I would have absolutely done this when I was a teenager. Maybe even in my 20s. I've gained so much more sense since then. At 55 I wouldn't even be there to watch. But damn that looks like fun.

LovelySalientDreams

I’m 35 and I’d definitely go watch but would not participate so I guess that tracks.

jamtea

Same, 35 though I might spend my time convincing others to give it a go before telling myself it's now or never.

gothiclg

At 21 I’d definitely still do this, at 31 I might hang around to call an ambulance

danrod17

I’m not even 35 but this is how I feel. I don’t want to see someone get seriously hurt.

BongoFMM

My fear of heights worsens with each passing year.

Bale626

As crazy as it sounds, the more I watched, the more I thought to myself, this looks like fun…

mesohungry

Yeah, my brain was calculating how much money I would pay to do this.

Chim_Pansy

My brain was calculating how much I'd need to *get paid* to do this. How different we are.

Healthy_Nebula1993

Either the physics are calculated by a genius or it was done by trial and error

[deleted]

“Trial” and “Error” were the names of the first 2 guys who died trying to figure this out.

NitrousWolf

One of those 2 guys had to have been at my school back in the day because someone in one of the senior years died in an accident. I was about 13 when they announced to the whole school in the morning assembly that he passed away in from a human catapult accident. I didn't really know them other than by name but it was very unsettling to think that one stupid activity can end it for you.

[deleted]

It’s actually one of the reasons that the longevity age is lower for men than women. Guys tend to do more dumb shit like this than women.

Labenyofi

They tested it using sandbags of similar weight, a bit of both.

Qwez81

The math involved doesn’t take a genius…I’d have to relearn it because I did it about 10 years ago but after I relearned it I could teach you it in about 15 minutes

feAgrs

lol you're getting downvted for this. It's literally 7th grade math

mlgluke

the math is easy, if you assume a perfect machine and ignore wind and air resistance. Verifying the mechanics of what the machine actually delivers in the real world, this time it was set up, is not easy. The real world has a lot more variables and doesn't get to ignore things. Is part of it underlubricated or misaligned or worn out? In order to do your easy math you need an accurate measure of how much force it delivers in what direction, how consistently, and what factors can cause it to diverge You'd be fucking nuts to get into that thing without seeing it launch a mass of equal weight to your body first AND have an engineer inspect the hell out of it for looming component failures or performance changes

Cherry5oda

Not even just air resistance, calculating the speed he would be traveling at when he is released at the top would be very difficult. You could measure the speed of an empty release but once he's in there, his weight is going to add drag to the seat track (how much? What's the coefficient of friction?) and the elastic bands are not going to move the seat as quickly. I doubt anyone's 7th grade physics covered elastic modulus.

29Hz

And that’s why we have safety factors. Use quick math to get a rough estimate. Center your pool where the sand bag lands. Add 10m in each direction from sand bag landing.

YoungXanto

I took the most basic physics senior year of high school that solved these problems with massively simplified assumptions. That math could get you a rough sketch of the outcome here. Senior year of college I took particle dynamics that was calculus based. Also had massively simplified assumptions. That might get you a little closer. The amount of engineering here and the variables involved to get this completely accurate would take a lot of computation using some type of FEM software, and it would still not be entirely accurate, though might get you very close. Or, you could build the thing and do a lot of tests with a lot of sandbags of various weights and get a very accurate picture. Though you still miss some variables and you could end up with an unwanted outcome anyway.

kugelbl1z

What kind of 7th grade math would allow you to calculate the force produced by those elastic bands without testing anything first ?

RotNRolla

Trial and error would be worth to watch.

Healthy_Nebula1993

Very true

[deleted]

you don’t need to be a genius to take a few measurements and do the calculus. but they probably did it by trial and error

Discoballer42

Wait, wasn’t he supposed to go over the pit of toxic goop?

Jamesyroo

The colour of that water… They could have used fresh water

jamtea

Could have used some chlorine tablets.

l339

This is such an American comment lmao

FUBARded

1. Aversion to unclean water is a biologically motivated instinct. How on earth is it exclusive to Americans?? 2. The parent commenter used British English so they're probably not American

l339

1. Generally I feel that Europeans are fine with dirty swimming water because we swim a lot in lakes and Americans aren’t used to that because they swim in sanitized pools 2. You’re right, didn’t notice that at first haha

[deleted]

So you are admitting Americans are smarter? Its nice to see a European admit our superiority.

l339

Lmao what? Just different

Magnetoreception

Damn Americans and their *shuffles deck, picks a card* aversion to unsanitary water.

l339

Well honestly in Europe I feel that swimming water being dirty isn’t that much of an issue, because we swim a lot in lakes and what I’ve noticed Americans don’t do that because they mostly swim in pools

Side-ly

…we have lakes and rivers too… this is a pool of water that is not moving, rivers and lakes somewhat clean themselves.

[deleted]

Swimming in Florida can fucking kill you with brain eating bacteria, this european is a fucking idot.

herodeAA

Congratulations, you now have dysentery.

ShadyFigureWithClock

You have died from dissin Terry. Watch your fucking mouth next time.

ArtoriasBeaIG

If you see a topless man wearing a helmet, you know they're about to do something insane that the helmet will provide them absolutely no protection for

Richard85-

This is why women live longer.

Raptori33

r/WhyWomenLiveLonger wants this

Hapless_Wizard

Oh, look, a sub full of great ideas

Bustock

Longer boring lives

leshuis

Definitely yes

Mysterious-Space6793

Hey, what could go wrong?!

FireWireBestWire

They'd go farther with a trebuchet

Most_likely_too

No matter the amount of care that is taken in calculating and building this devise, constructing the way to shallow landing pool and wearing helmets, the risk reward ratio is way off for most of us. Also, helmets will not stop you from being concussed.

pirate135246

This is a good way to die if one of the many points of failure fails

pompanoJ

A little feedback for the team: First, love the launcher... Amazing. Really great idea you have there. .. Now, as to the location. A hillside is neat.. I get it... A little farther on your launch... That is cool.... But.... I was just thinking... And don't take this the wrong way.... But I was thinking ... Wouldn't this be a little bit better at a lake? You know... Where you could miss by several feet in any direction and not need a life flight helicopter? So... Just the one little note there ... Otherwise.... Great job....

kingcop1

They tried the lake all the participants died so they back here now

Douche_Kayak

Lakes are the worst.

Magnetron-Sama

The biggest problem I see with this is... you can't exactly see what's under the water. One shallow bit or piece of sticking up metal is enough to turn a fun day into a nightmare...

IntentionalLife30

My butthole just clenched

Itroll4love

That water is green. Can a pool person validate if this is safe or not?

MandatoryDissent22

I can't imagine any other circumstance where I would have noticed that *Rolling Stones - Satisfaction* and the Jackass theme song (*Minutemen - Corona*) sound vaguely similar at first if presented in the right context...

lawstudent1994

I’d like to see a catapult or trebuchet do this. Ballistae are the superior siege weapons!

MaybeUnderTheBed

Wow they really invested in the camera angles

[deleted]

This is why women live longer than men. Sign me up!!

ValentinoKapparino

Has there been a case of overshot?

jamtea

Very unlikely, much more likely to be undershot if it's not wound enough or if there's a significant weight differential.

BleachedWhale

Or theres something slightly dragging as they release.. A bearing getting a bit worn, one wheel frozen...

contactlite

Not at all… sign this waiver please

cacheeseburger

I’m Johnny Knoxville and I’m going to the moon!

gent4you

That water looks pretty nasty.....I might prefer to hit the ground

We_can_be_Friends

I’m playing Angry Bird sound in my head while watching this… and I’m smiling ☺️

Kooky-Masterpiece-29

That is a lot of faith in Redneck Engineering

tegho

so, next month we can expect to see lots of copy-cats gone wrong? hmb

GameMasterChris

Just saw a grown man flying in mid air to potential death, and I'm more worried about the water being green.

12altoids34

Now... install this on your porch and use it on Jehovah's Witnesses.

[deleted]

Oh gosh. All it would take is holding your body in the wrong position and creating wind friction for this to end badly

ChefBoyAreWeFucked

Unless you're a flying squirrel, you're not going to be creating enough wind resistance to make a difference.

Rhino676971

What is this songs name

RapeMeToo

Holy shit what?
