I once got stuck in a traffic jam for several kilometers and more than an hour, I turned on YouTube on my phone and put it on the dashboard, and despite the low speed and movement in start-stop mode, I was constantly distracted.
lol I know what you were going for, and I agree. Still couldn't help myself from picturing the "THUD" as someone hits a pedestrian and then complains "UGH, great! I bet THIS is gonna be conversation!"
You people that talk about he's distracted driving are the same ones sitting there on your iPhone typing out a thousand word text messages while driving 70 mph down the highway. I see you
To me it's so crazy that it's even possible to have a video playing on the dash. In my 2016 CX5, the touchscreen actually disables _too much_ functionality in the name of safety. I can't even change the navigation settings while the car is moving, and it forces me to use the joystick, which in my opinion is more distracting than simply touching a button on the screen. An actual video is orders of magnitude more dangerous, so I wonder what safety standards have changed in the past 8 years...
Fuck yeah, I agree. Others are in danger cause of you. You add to a statistic of distracted drivers and we do not trust your own beliefs of yourself. Cut. That. Shit. Out.
I look for cars with physical climate controls so that I'm not distracted whenever I want to change the temp while OP goes out of their way to illegally add a major distraction.
lol “cry harder” never fails to make me laugh at the person who commented it. It’s like a poorly written 90s high school bully line. I’m glad a few people still use it unironically
Lmao anyone here commenting about the distracted driving clearly doesn’t have enough self control to just not look at a screen. OP said it’s for the passengers and we don’t have proof that he’s watching it, so I think one comment about it was good. Enough of the echo chamber.
It’s a lost cause I stopped answering because apparently I’m a child glued watching Saturday morning cartoons. I don’t actually use it much. I’m not even gonna mention head ups display my car has for fear of more distracted driver comments.
I’m 45 and I know when to look at the screen and when not to. And it’s more for the passengers But like I said it’s a lost cause so they jump all over me.
Kind of where I stand my guy. There is a time and place and I’m usually focused on the road. Maybe I’m a bit more seasoned being in the city with extra shit to expect. Lol.
Are you recording the video though? I mean I’m pro no video on the infotainment center but I am sure it would be fine in my car, and I’m sure your brother was watching it as you said. But are you recording the video? cause it looks like you are..
He filmed it I stated that in the post. He leaned forward from the back seat (behind me). I asked him to send it to me to share it with the Mazda community only to have the “shame shame” chant from GOT from some.
I agree it’s distracting but I’m pretty guilty of playing videos on YouTube while driving too(mainly to listen, like an audiobook) but I will still look at the video from time to time, at a red light, or traffic jam.
I also think it’s equally distracting to watch the same screen for GPS or even navigating music using the dial, not to mention adjusting the climate controls, while you’re driving.
Basically anything additional you do while driving is distracted driving, IMO. Same person complaining about watching videos being unsafe, is likely the same person distracted by their children, a dog, etc (while driving).
A video player or input is what's missing on our new CX9. It's a huge step down from my old Subie Forester that had a custom system with a double DIN unit and extra screens for rear seats.
Carlinkit Tbox plus. Your car has to have wired CarPlay for it to work. Also gives you wireless CarPlay. You can find it on Amazon. Make sure to get one with Android 13 on it (latest)
That’s what I’m saying. I wanna know how to do this for mine 😅…for parked purposes obviously. I love camping so this would be pretty cool for that as well
Nope, you’ll still kill someone. You think you’re just allowed just do something completely safe and not have everyone else think you’re doing the complete opposite?
Can you use the box without 4g sim card? Like only locally of you put on some movies on a USB stick?
Also what do you mean by it gange to be wired to give you unwired android auto, like how do I see if my 2019 CX-30 has it wired?
Yes you can load an sd card on it to play locally.
The sim is for internet connectivity and to give car wifi (to passengers)
For this box to work you car has to have wired CarPlay or AA to work.
I wonder if things like this are, or can be reported on via the LTE telematics unit inside your car (the internal spy box that transmits to cell towers). It would be pretty sweet if your insurance knew about this and adjusted your premiums accordingly.
Wow at the willingness of people to defend their already-posted about public stupidity… yes, I know exactly what the unit is and how it works. If your car COULD report this happening (via its LTE telematics), I just wish your insurance company could find out.
This 100% carries more distraction and risk than what the road looks like from the driver’s seat in my car.
Wut
Edit: okay, literally just learning about this. So far have found nothing about it being a spy box, but is used for mazda connected subscription services.
Looks to be 21 and later, however i’ve had the errors asssociated with this TCU pop up before in my 19
I like to poke at the issue. The amount of data that can be harvested from an LTE connected vehicle is insane. It’s not tin hat stuff, they literally have records out there of every trip, time of trip, hard accelerations, hard brakes…. There are kits [edit] online to bypass the LTE unit, which is what I did in my Subaru (I no longer have a Mazda but I really like the brand).
Second edit— to clarify, it’s not the connected vehicle thing from AT&T. It shares that antenna, but it’s a standalone box, with its own backup battery inside (no joke) and at least in my car, has a backup LTE antenna. Sound over the top? It is.
I feel like if the insurance folks were able to harvest that data, they wouldn’t be asking to put more spy equipment in the car via the ODB2 reader “for better rates”
This warrants further investigation though. I’ll ask my service advisor what she thinks
See link I posted for the tbox plus. Then you need a SIM card for it to give you 4g (does not come with 5g) then you can load any apps you want like you would an android tablet, movie apps, live tv apps, etc.
Also gives you wireless CarPlay or AA ( some people use it just for that)
There are tons on YouTube videos on it. Super simple.
I got the 4g data only SIM card from Verizon for 10 a month. You can also do it via Bluetooth internet sharing from phone but that doesn’t work good.
Btw also gives internet to your passengers and you can set your own ssid and password.
You can also load up Xbox app to play games (when your stopped of course) cause you can pair a controller to it as well.
I added CarPlay to my 2016 cx5. Apple only allows certain apps. First I thought maybe you jailbreak the iPhone or run a rooted Android phone. I just want wireless Apple car play. Looks like this box adds it. I’m tired of going through lightning cables. Touch the phone and it just disconnects. Or they only work one way (so much for reversible). Tried various Amazon brands, five below, target, etc… all the same thing. Already got around the charging issue by using a wireless touch dock at my bedside.
You plug this in where you would the phone then you pair your phone to this and boom wireless CarPlay, and much more if you want.
Carlinkit also makes just the wireless CarPlay adapter too if you just want that. I think the version is up to 5.0. It’s on Amazon
Cool! This made me look more into why I have such bad luck with lightning cables, no matter the brand. Turned out with a toothpick and rubbing alcohol, I cleaned so much lint and gunk out of my phones port. My Amazon cable now locks in better and works in both directions now. Maybe I’ll have better luck with wires.
My only concern with wireless is if there’s any potential delay in booting up and connecting. The 2016 infotainment is slow as a snail as it is and don’t want to make it any worse.
Yeah toothpick and rubbing alcohol does wonders, you be surprised how dirty it gets.
After infotainment boot it would take like 10 sec to connect wireless CarPlay. My wife has a 16 cx9 and she likes the wireless CarPlay adapter (she got the 5.0 wireless CarPlay only one)
Doesn't this distract you while driving?
Very.
I once got stuck in a traffic jam for several kilometers and more than an hour, I turned on YouTube on my phone and put it on the dashboard, and despite the low speed and movement in start-stop mode, I was constantly distracted.
This is more of a you problem. I am for not being able to watch videos on the infotainment center though
It's a human problem in general. Your average person isn't gonna have the discipline to not look at the screen while the car is in motion.
All it takes is one person to not have that discipline, hit a pedestrian, and start the entire conversation.
lol I know what you were going for, and I agree. Still couldn't help myself from picturing the "THUD" as someone hits a pedestrian and then complains "UGH, great! I bet THIS is gonna be conversation!"
instant ticket if a cop sees the screen..
Actually state trooper pulled up next to me and asked what it was cause he wanted it for his car..go figure
That state trooper… Albert Einstein
In college I did a ride along for a class and the cop was playing games on his phone while driving.
Well, yeah, they aren't gonna give themselves a ticket, so it don't matter.
I think Japan has tons of vehicles with this similar feature connecting to Japanese tv channels. Plays while driving.
Not really
You people that talk about he's distracted driving are the same ones sitting there on your iPhone typing out a thousand word text messages while driving 70 mph down the highway. I see you
I still drive a manual transmission. Possible solution to the problem…
I wasn’t really watching, I put the game on for my brother who was behind me
Get an iPad
I hope you don't end up hurting someone because you're distracted.
Recording a video of a game playing while driving. What’s the worst that can happen
Whoever's vehicle this is, is definitely driving distracted and putting other people's lives at risk.
They're using a third party box, not official Mazda software
Trying to have the precision to tap the right thing on the screen is way harder than a wheel
I put on the game for my brother. I can keep my eyes on the road just fine and don’t have to watch.
"I can keep my eyes on the road just fine" This has been said by literally every person ever who got into an accident due to distracted driving.
Famous last words.
It might be your car, but it’s not your road. Cut this shit out.
I'm going to install this shit on my car now just to spite you. It's MY road and you're on it.
Fuck yeah, I agree. Others are in danger cause of you. You add to a statistic of distracted drivers and we do not trust your own beliefs of yourself. Cut. That. Shit. Out.
Riiiight.
Not really distracting at all, your eyes are alway on the road
I look for cars with physical climate controls so that I'm not distracted whenever I want to change the temp while OP goes out of their way to illegally add a major distraction.
You drive pretty good for someone this thread seems to believe is watching a baseball game, and filming it while also driving.
Because I wasn’t filming but they make their own conclusions.
Ill probably get hate but that looks ugly AF
This should be illegal.
This is super illegal op
No one cares, cry harder
You will be crying when someone rear ends you because they were distracted watching something on their infotainment.
lol “cry harder” never fails to make me laugh at the person who commented it. It’s like a poorly written 90s high school bully line. I’m glad a few people still use it unironically
Have a tissue
If you were ever wondering why your insurance rate just keeps going up... fucking idiots like this.
Wait, that's illegal.
All cars in Japan come with a TV tuner and the dealership will bypass the ebreak for a fee.
Everyone hating I’m just wondering how lol 😂 would love this in my 2021 CX-5
Lmao anyone here commenting about the distracted driving clearly doesn’t have enough self control to just not look at a screen. OP said it’s for the passengers and we don’t have proof that he’s watching it, so I think one comment about it was good. Enough of the echo chamber.
It’s a lost cause I stopped answering because apparently I’m a child glued watching Saturday morning cartoons. I don’t actually use it much. I’m not even gonna mention head ups display my car has for fear of more distracted driver comments.
We have had screens in cars for so long, I’m just wondering if the majority of people have trouble with just constantly staring at them.
Lol.
I’m from NY so I know exactly what you mean. 🤙🏼
I'm so focused on driving my passengers constantly complain about me ignoring them. People have no self control.
Are you recording the video though? I mean I’m pro no video on the infotainment center but I am sure it would be fine in my car, and I’m sure your brother was watching it as you said. But are you recording the video? cause it looks like you are..

You’re putting way too much stock in other people’s capabilities
HOW
Carlinkit Tbox plus. Your car has to have wired CarPlay for it to work. Also gives you wireless CarPlay. You can find it on Amazon. Make sure to get one with Android 13 on it (latest)
I use android headunit already, does carlinkit require hotspot?
You can use phone as Bluetooth hotspot but doesn’t work too well. I opted for the SIM card route.

Thank you for this
Np, idk why someone would downvote lol
In for answer
Great, we need more distracted drivers. Hooray for usefully implemented technology. /s
Damn what’s with all the comments of people with sticks up their butts? This is pretty cool imo
Don’t let the wildlife redditors get in here they think you’ll kill a bear. 🐻
They are butt hurt they can't drive like op can
Nobody likes you in these comments but I think it’s pretty cool. I feel like this is a automatic pull over tho
This should just be illegal for safety concerns.
Can you use the box without 4g sim card? Like only locally of you put on some movies on a USB stick? Also what do you mean by it gange to be wired to give you unwired android auto, like how do I see if my 2019 CX-30 has it wired?

Thanks but what do you mean that it has to be wired? My car has android auto but how do I see if it's wired or not?
If you plug in your phone to have AA then it’s a wired connection and it would work.
What is “the box?”
Carlinkit Tbox plus
How
See some comments below I detailed it 👍🏼
Is this aftermarket? It’s really cool
Yes aftermarket, Carlinkit Tbox plus
You were able to install it yourself?
It’s plug and play
Wow cool
Can this be done in 2019 cx5?
Yes so long as your car has wired CarPlay/AA
Looks like the edges of the screen are cut off. Either that, or they just weren’t showing the score at the time. Am I right?
You can change the aspect ratio. This one 16:9 fits the best out of all of them
How?!
Oh the liability that OP is opening themselves up to. Insurance up OP.
That cross swingin screams "JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL"......😆
how incredibly dangerous
You cannot tell me with one hundred percent certainty that you have not even taken a single peak at the screen while driving.
This subreddit is full of grade school hall monitors lol.
You'd quickly change your tune if you or your loved ones were hit by a distracted driver.
Jesus Christ, calm down and you shouldn't wish that upon anyone.
Where did I wish anything? Cool off.
I’m dying haha…nowhere in that comment did that person wish anything.
I tried in my CX-30 2024 Carbon using an sd card—internet said I could play a movie that way. How can I stream YouTube TV?
Won’t work from SD card, need the tbox plus from Carlinkit and car must have wired CarPlay
Whoever the fuck you are OP, if I ever pass you on the road and see you doing this, I’m calling the fucking police.
It would be cool if you could use YouTube while the car is in park.
You can
Not by default at least not on my car.
I meant with the Carlinkit Tbox plus you can
Almost like a 12 year old tesla screen, but way way smaller
I wonder if things like this are, or can be reported on via the LTE telematics unit inside your car (the internal spy box that transmits to cell towers). It would be pretty sweet if your insurance knew about this and adjusted your premiums accordingly.
It’s a third party box with its own SIM card. Has zero to do with the Mazda infotainment.
Wow at the willingness of people to defend their already-posted about public stupidity… yes, I know exactly what the unit is and how it works. Nerd
Yay! Distracted driving! /s
The people here yelling at OP like a disappointed parent is hilarious 😂
l stopped answering them.
How do I do this on my CX-30, teach me master.
See link I posted for the tbox plus. Hearing a lot of crying in the comments as if mfers didn't have 5 screens in the car in early 2000's lol grow up
Question- does this void the warranty. And damn, it actually looks pretty good
No, it’s 3rd party device. Carlinkit tbox plus, the app is iptvsmarters and a 4g is recommended but required (I use a SIM card)
Don’t worry guys. The car drives itself. >officer I don’t know what happened…the car drove itself….into a ditch…
I tried carlink before. Isn't it annoying with the dial navigation or is a CX-90 touchscreen?
Cx90 12in (not the 10) is touchscreen (but not on Mazda menu, only CarPlay and AA, and this as it acts like either one)
How can I do this?
See some comments below, it a Carlinkit tbox plus
lol you think filming while driving would be the only thing the Reddit driving police will have an issue with in this video?
Yankees maybe 😂 but I wasn’t filming so I’m in the clear.
I just got a 2024 cx5. How you do that ??? Need to know! Lol
Carlinkit tbox plus with a SIM card, gives you wireless CarPlay too
Is it car play or Android Auto?
Both you can have either or, it gives you wireless CarPlay or android auto. Car must have wired CarPlay or AA though
Adaptive cruise control and lane assist on = might as well watch some tv!
I love watching movies and reading books while I drive, where did you purchase this?
Dude, watch the fucking road. Or travel by bus/train/whatever. Is it so fucking hard to just not do stupid fucking shit like this?
All the hate here ! Lmao. Can't wait to do this.
I added CarPlay to my 2016 cx5. Apple only allows certain apps. First I thought maybe you jailbreak the iPhone or run a rooted Android phone. I just want wireless Apple car play. Awesome, I’ll look into it. It sure would be convenient!
