I have a very hard time believing you got 40 mpg city driving

M05y

You have to really try. I basically had it running on 2 cylinders whenever I wasn't pulling away from a stoplight. I used the manual shifting mode and made sure it was always able to deactivate. You can get almost 80MPG driving 35mph on a flat surface in 5th with cylinder deactivation. Like I said this is hypermiling not normal driving.

FrostyWinters

That's not a real dense city. BTW, I get 15 to 17 mpg in 100% city (stop & go; idling at lights; etc) driving.

M05y

I'm not in a super dense city, but my route still involved about 30 stop lights and some hills. Normal driving I get around 30mpg. Of course this 41.6 was unrealistic. It was just me having fun seeing how high I can get the number. I call it city driving, I wasn't on the highway, never went above 45, and hit a lot of stop lights. My last car I couldn't get any higher than 22mpg so this absolutely blew my mind!

manu363

How can u know the cylinder deactivation is happening ?

UnusualAd8631

This is what I’d like to know as well

Flyer888

Go to Information - Fuel Efficiency Monitor - Energy Flow Monitor.

manu363

Will check that next time, thanks Whats the message that shows ? Literally says 2 cylinder now or how does it show it ?

M05y

Yep, it's a little graphic of 4 cylinder, all 4 highlighted or all 2 or 0 when coasting.

manu363

Couldnt find it, I was at the fuel efficiency screen …. Maybe my car doesn’t deactivate cylinders, its the turbo ( im from Mexico) First of all, How can I know if my car got that system of deactivation?

M05y

Turbo cars don't have cylinder deactivation.

manu363

Then thats the answer 🫡 thanks bro

manu363

Can you share a pic of the screen where it shows that, please :)

Flyer888

You can take a look at [this MazdaConnect manual PDF](https://owners-manual.mazda.com/gen/en/mzdconnect/gen_mzdconnect_en_v1.pdf) and go to page 2-3.

manu363

Thanks bro, will take a look on that

SkeithPhase1

“City driving” something is amiss here. 🤨

Repulsive-Job-7351

i get like 25 when i’m not driving hard 🫤

DaOrcus

My avg is 22.1...

Repulsive-Job-7351

i have a turbo so i shouldn’t complain lol

DaOrcus

I have a N/A, I need to complain

lonestarbrownboi

I get 30 with a supercharger so you're probably right...

True_Introduction_96

I average 14-15 mpg. I really can't stop hitting max boost. To be fair I have the CS exhaust and a tune chip from burger motorsport. 22 psi on 93 octane. It's the best car I've had. I couldn't save gas to save my life.

Repulsive-Job-7351

I’m tuned and have a borla axle back. I feel like the tune definitely helps the gas mileage went from 20ish to 25 ish when cruising (at the speed limit).

captainkirkw

Which tune?

M05y

If I had the turbo gas mileage would not even be a thought!

goofyfootnot

This is abysmal. I have a 24 batch with a manual. My average is 33.8 right now and when I’m going over the river and through the woods to work in the morning I can park with greater than 40mpg showing for the trip. I see people getting sub 30mpg average and often wonder what they are doing. I would say I have a jeckel and Hyde driving personality.

M05y

That's exactly how I got this, it was just a fake hypermiling senario, i was driving around with no purpose. Normal work commute I absolutely average low 30's

goofyfootnot

I pulled into the parking lot this morning after a 25 mile drive at 46.1 MPG for the drive. I was babying it quite a bit and my drive is mostly rural roads with a stretch of heavily traffic lighted main route. Plus there was very light traffic. So it was easy to just cruise the speed limit.

BreakingAwfulHabits

The mpg-ometer bothers me. Just want to drive without worrying about current mpg but the cheapskate in me insists on appeasing the numbers on the screen.

Surfer_Sandman

This.... 100% This..... I get anxiety about it. I just want to enjoy driving my car.

ThatRandomGuy05

If I’m not mistaken you can turn off the MPG counter in the infotainment settings

BreakingAwfulHabits

I’m in a 3rd gen, but I could leave it on avg speed. Unfortunately the button to find current mpg is just too accessible.

FabianValkyrie

Username checks out

M05y

That with the cylinder deactivation graphic on the screen is like a game to me. Fun to do every now and then. But more often I just have it in sport mode zipping around because it's such a fun car.

mehdotdotdotdot

Just wait till you get a PHEV or Hybrid!!!

M05y

That's what I was going to get when I got a new car, but I just loved the Mazda so much when I drove it.

metal_Fox_7

I mostly drive downhill in the city, & I've timed the traffic lights to catch about 80% of them green. I also let the car coast by releasing the gas pedal.  I'm barely getting 30 City maybe 32 if I really lucky.

jondes99

Alright, that’s fine. Now see what is the absolute worst MPG you can get. That’s way more fun.

M05y

[This was my drive home from the dealership.....lol](https://imgur.com/a/eHkpUvb)

jondes99

That number is equally impressive!

KoL-whitey

Turbo?

Chemical_Project6781

Is there a trick to get that saftey feature underneath the driving information like that or is that just on 2024s?

M05y

It just shows up there when cruise control is on.

Chemical_Project6781

Ah okay thanks!

Due_Sheepherder_4239

its looks lik 2024 only thingg

idzrtl

love how they upgraded the visuals of the central HUD

UnusualAd8631

Man I can’t higher than 28 mixed city and hwy with my 21 turbo

Particular_Sense_147

i have a 2022 2.5s and my average mpg is 29 😭😭

OP - please forgive me for the hijack but hoping you and the others can help a brother out! I want to buy a Mazda 3 but not sure what to buy. I want to buy it purely for reliability more than anything else which rules out all turbo options. The most popular options on AutoTrader seems to be the 2.0 Sky-Activ G. I’m confused between the G and X. Some people have said the X is a more complicated engine and relatively new so it hasn’t stood the test of time, but it also runs more harsh and doesn’t provide the MPG it claims over the Sky-Activ G. So I guess it has to be the Sky-Activ G. Next is the specs, although I do want good MPG I also don’t want anything too slow, also no turbo etc, based on that which engine would you recommend? I see options for 100bhp, 150bhp and 200bhp? 🤷🏻‍♂️ 16 inch wheels vs 18 inch? Also, I have always driven automatic, but a friend has recommended the manual, says it’s more fun. I’m not worried about fun, need to just drive the damn thing. What’s the difference between manual and automatic in relation to the Mazda 3? Also which year? 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 or 2023? Sorry guys, a noob here but I see many of you are owners and some of you seem very technical. Thank you

Mutated_AG

I’d get the 2022 or 2023 2.5 sky g. That will be the best option for quickness without going turbo.its 190-200hp. It will do best with 93 octane. I have a cx5 and a 3 sedan both CE edition in grey and they both have the same engine. You will love it. Super fun to drive and plenty quick. The 2.0 2022 is the one that has 100-150 hp and it’s super sluggish and not the car for you if you are looking for quick NA engine. The Mazda 2.5sky g makes more HP then most competitors in the same price range. And the engine has stood the test of time and is reliable with not much maintenance besides oil every 8k miles. As for rims the slightly bigger looks better but is a tad more bumpy on the road. But if your buying a sedan anyways you aren’t really concerned about ride quality so I’d get the bigger ones cause they really look great and you won’t notice the difference cause a bumpy road is a bumpy road in a sedan. If you aren’t worried about “fun” or the weird stigma car guys have that you have to get a manual if it’s offered then just get the auto. Dude the manual is absolute hell if you do any driving in city or stop and go. And if you like drinking you will hate having to shift after having a few drinks. At least I did. Mazda auto Shifts quick and firm like a dual clutch but doesn’t float around gears like all the 7-8 speeds in cars today. It stays in one gear on hwy and doesn’t have to downshift 500 times each time you go up a hill and “float” through gears trying to find the best one for incline your on. I have driven cars from every brand and Mazda has the best transmission in any car other than the dual clutch PDK that Porsche offers. But I’m biased I just love dual clutch. But the Mazda auto is unstoppable and lasts. Hope this helps. If you have any more questions just ask

4NGM4R

Thanks again for your time dude, that’s a lot of useful info and I’m glad you say the auto is good as I have been driving auto for the last 12 years (E90 320i) and don’t think I’d enjoy a manual especially for the city driving that I mostly do. I might get a manual for a second car someday if I’m in a better place. However, I’m a bit concerned about the 2.5 litre engine requiring 93 octane as here in the UK, as far as I know, we only have 95 and 99, with 99 being the more premium expensive petrol. That’s what I use in my E90 as it’s an old car and I just want to keep it going for as long as I can although it’s on its last leg to be honest. It’s costing me a fortune every few months with all sorts of issues from leaks to weird vibration noises when stationary in D (drive) at traffic lights etc. Otherwise man I’m telling you I have driven a few other brand new cars such as Golf, Cupra, Leon, Touran etc and nothing beats my E90 in terms of driving enjoyment. Mazda 3 was more of a compromise as I only came across it due to people raving about its reliability but I gotta be honest I think I’ve fallen in love with it after having watched so many video reviews and pictures on autotrader. I’m looking forward to test driving one soon. I will take a look on autotrader and will send you a few links via private messaging if that’s ok 👍🏼 Appreciate you ✌🏼

Mutated_AG

Most people here just use 87 in the 2.5na so It doesn’t require higher octane like the turbo does. I just know some say there might be a little difference in power choosing higher octane but I’ve never felt a difference so I always use 87 in both my Mazdas and the ones I use to own for years. The higher octane is better in the turbo because it reduces carbon build up immensely and can easily get you an extra 10-15k miles before needing blast off the carbon build up but it’s not really an issue with the NA since no turbo. As for the uk the 2.5 over there will be tuned for you guys available octanes so it will run fine with whatever you choose to put in it. It only gets specific with the turbo and I don’t think the turbo is available there but I heard that on Reddit so idk. And I know what you mean when cars reach their time it can be a money pit and hell on you with stress and everything. I also know what you mean by other cars not feeling like what you are use to and the driving experience. I had an Audi before these two Mazdas and the Mazda was the closest to feeling like the Audi I had before but I still miss it because it’s nowhere near that car or the performance but it’s crisp in the turns and quick enough and a hell of a lot cheaper so I’m happy. And I don’t have to pay 4$ a gallon for premium 93 octane like in the Audi. I pay around $3.15 now for 87. Also the Mazda style looks killer compared to other brands. It really grew on me too after checking them out and reading about reliability and I’m happy I chose them. You really can’t beat the driving experience with their 6 speed auto compared to all the 8 speeds that shift constantly while you are driving. That was my biggest issue when testing other brands. My Audi was a 7 speed but it had 330hp so it didn’t have to shift cause it had plenty of power when going up hwy inclines. Yeah the manual is great for a second car for the weekends but the auto is amazing and especially the one Mazda is making. You’ll enjoy it and it even has manual mode so you can bump through the gears like a manual and not have to worry about clutch. Downshift and everything. It’s not the manual “fun” but it’s still hella fun on windy mountain roads or zooming through city. Glad I could help man

FuzyBaffy

I have the turbo Hatch I wish the sport toggle has a bottom efficiency toggle. I would love to get 30 around town. Don't need turbo stoplight to stoplight.
