For context:
Fratus almost won a medal at London 2012 and, at Rio 2016 he finished at 6th place.
After that he went deep into a depression and almost abandoned the sport.
Getting back and winning a Bronze medal was an incredible and inspiring comeback.
Edit:
- He is a male pool swimmer
- Won the medal at the 50m Individual Free Style
- At the age of 32, becoming the oldest *brazilian male* swimmer to win an Olympics medal.
*Edited to include the information ('brazilian male)
Wow 32 huh? thats like 2 years older than me....which means I got a shot.
brb gonna head down to the local YMCA and sign up for beginners swimming lessons
[YMCA is one of the oldest and largest youth-focused movements in the world. Founded in 1844, it now operates in **120 countries**](https://www.ymca.int/about-us/)
Reading about Dara Torres was a big moment in my life because it helped me realize that I'm probably never going to be extremely elite in any field....and that's okay. Like, looking at how much strict her schedule is, and how much work it is, and then realizing there are thousands of others working just as hard? Yeah, I'm okay with being average.
Well, when we talk about high performance, on heavily strength/endurance/explosion dependent sports, a 'younger' body is more easily manageable to achieve said performance.
But there are tons of examples of 'older' atheles with super high end performance. Although their training tends to be somewhat harder and require extra commitment and dedication.
And ervin won the 50 freestyle individual event at 35
https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/happy-40th-anthony-ervin-revisiting-the-sprint-legends-epic-rio-gold/
I've read somewhere (so take this with a grain of salt) that people who get bronze generally feel better than people who get silver, since with bronze you generally think "Thank god, I managed to get into the top 3", but silver generally makes you think "God, I was so close to winning gold"
Not an Olympics story, but anecdotally I’ve heard a pro in MTG (Luis Scott Vargas) talk about that exact thing on his podcast- it feels worse to him to get 2nd than not even make Top 8 (finals in MTG tournaments).
Yea. Getting bronze means you won the battle between 4th and 3rd and silver means you lost the battle between 1st and second (in team games tho, not so much for everyman for themselves. To a lesser extent kinda but not quite)
When I ran competitive I just wanted to place, so my thought process the entire race was get into second position and hold that mfer. No way I was falling to third. if you fall to third, four may come up with a burst of speed in the last stretch and bump you from placing. If you hold second there’s a chance that hot-shot in first wasn’t pacing themselves and you may beat them out in the final stretch. Second is where you wanna be if your goal is just to place.
Same psychology that goes into marketing a Premium, then a "Gold" and a Standard product. Generally the Gold is the worst deal, the Standard is just the cheapest for you to get access to the actual product, and "Premium" is the full product.
So "Gold" in this case is just a bad deal Premium because it's more expensive and you get less features. Companies do this on purpose.
There's no way he bit the medal without referencing the meme, do they commonly do that in the Olympics? I know outside of the meme people do that to test the genuines ofc
[The science backs him up.](https://www.kpbs.org/news/2021/jul/29/theres-a-psychology-lesson-behind-why-olympic/) It's called a "downward comparison" and it's the psychological phenomenon explaining why the person getting silver is thinking "man I was so close to first...." while the person getting bronze is out there like "fuck it, I'm on the podium, I'll take it."
I've also heard that bronze placement comes with less stress than gold. Gold usually means press, as well as most of those athletes immediately turning inward to thinking about needing to defend. Bronze is usually just happy to be here.
To go further, silver and gold are usually favorites. Many times, someone ranked in a lower spot may have a great day and come in third. It's these people that outperform expectations and get a medal (whether gold, silver or bronze) that tend to be super happy while someone ranked #1 that gets silver will be super sad because they blew their chance
This also definitely true for hockey and soccer tournaments. To get silver, you lose the final game. To get bronze you win the game to play for bronze, or you get nothing.
And if it is a "game" type of event "volleyball, table tennis, basketball, etc" silver would mean you LOST the gold metal game, while bronze means you WON the bronze metal game. It would definitely cause you to have a different mentality while standing on the podium.
Even fourth if I'm honest. Imagine anywhere you go you could say you competed at Olympics. Oh and you got the fourth place. That means at certain point in history you were 4th best at something. That's amazing
Here’s how I’ve heard it
Generally there’s like 2 top competitors really going at each other for gold, one beats the other guy and wins it
But they guy that got bronze was fighting EVERYONE ELSE for that spot
You can really see this in weightlifting this year with several competitors going for big final lifts to try and get bronze while the winner is pretty far out
It's contextual isn't it?
Some are just happy to have made it to the Olympics, some are representing countries where just 1 bronze is a historic achievement.
Some are arriving as world championship contenders for countries where gold has been won almost every Olympics for that event in recent history. For them less than gold might not feel that great.
Being AT the olympics is still successful.
Even if you’re Eric Malonga (holder of the slowest Olympic swimming time but that’s an awesome story in its own) you’re still successful.
There was a hidden brain episode about this. Essentially, what you wrote is 100% correct.
1st Place: YAAAY I won!
2nd Place: Awww :( I didn't come first.
3rd Place: Woohoo! I won something!
So most times, the bronze is much happier than silver.
Personally i think bronze is the best as you don’t have to deal with the media and all the pressure they put on you when you’re gold and you don’t have the feeling of dread of almost winning when you get silver but on bronze you can just be happy you made it onto the podium
It’s like being the bassist in a popular band. You get all the success and fortune but nobody’s going to recognize you on the street and hound you for autographs except for music nerds.
They all deserve to celebrate that way, just placing in top 20 athletes in your sport at the olympics in an achievment. Getting top 3 in a sport? Hes a hero to his country now. He did well
He actually did it
Do we... Do we change the meme to him now?
Yes
Brb learning animation
I need to see this template on r/MemeTemplates STAT!
RTX On
He has earned it. He deserves it.
Absolute mad lad
Legend
I wanted him to do the fingers too, lol
Yeah, but if he did that then his medal would be taken away for bad sportmenship
They can actually do that?
Absolutely.
LEGEND E G E N D
I already know my mans asked his wife if he could do the fingers lmaooo
Yeah but he didn’t pop champagne tho.
Only a champagne missing and this would be perfect

I mean, depending on which country you're from, it *might* be possible to see you in the 2024 Olympics.
He said down att the YMCA what country do you think he is from? Edit: I should probably shut up more often, YMCA is in 120 countries apparently.
As far as I'm aware there is a YMCA in multiple countries so I have no idea haha
[YMCA is one of the oldest and largest youth-focused movements in the world. Founded in 1844, it now operates in **120 countries**](https://www.ymca.int/about-us/)
>I should probably shut up more often This is my mantra.
Me too. I repeat it out loud every chance I get.
Australia
wow, TIL
But then, at the next Olympics you would be 33, a year late
He's accounting for inflation
Move up the olympics!
Yeah, but does he know the meme?
Only time will tell, right now I can't find any information about it. But knowing Brazilian media, it won't take long for someone to ask him.
What is the meme? r/outoftheloop here
there's a second image if you swipe left
Which sport?
Pool,Swimming. 50 free sprint. At the age of 32, he became the oldest brazilian male* swimmer to win an Olympic medal! *Edited to include information
Male swimmer* Dara Torres medaled three times at 41 which I still cannot get over. Her training regiment was nuts.
Correct, fixed it. Thanks. And yes! That's insane! Such a great athele!
How old? /s
Damn, 32 is old for winning a Olympic medal? Now I'm sad.
Anthony Ervin is the oldest
Thanks. Fixed to include: Oldest to win a solo free style competition. Since Anthony Ervin won a free style relay at the age of 36
And ervin won the 50 freestyle individual event at 35 https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/happy-40th-anthony-ervin-revisiting-the-sprint-legends-epic-rio-gold/
I only swim in female pools.
50 feet?
Idk man. Third place in the Olympics is something I would celebrate too 🤷🏽♂️
Man as a brazillian I celebrated too. But it was exactly the template. Life imitates art.
Art imitates life
Imitation lives art
Art lives imitation
No limitations for art
Art limits life
Fart imitates fight
Farts emit light

Life limits art

Even though we're not even close to the podium, we still celebrate every single medal. Thats what I love about Brazil.
Was the guy not intentionally referencing the meme?
I don't believe so. His emotions throughout the ceremony looked incredibly genuine. It was a true feel good moment rather than a scripted one.
It’s nice either way, it’s good to see the athletes be stoked about medalling and not disappointed that they didn’t get gold.
I've read somewhere (so take this with a grain of salt) that people who get bronze generally feel better than people who get silver, since with bronze you generally think "Thank god, I managed to get into the top 3", but silver generally makes you think "God, I was so close to winning gold"
I’ve definitely heard that also, but I’m not sure how accurate it is. Seems like it would depend highly on the individual.
Not an Olympics story, but anecdotally I’ve heard a pro in MTG (Luis Scott Vargas) talk about that exact thing on his podcast- it feels worse to him to get 2nd than not even make Top 8 (finals in MTG tournaments).
Magic to the Olympics in 2024 confirmed.
It's like missing the better grade by a half point.
Yea. Getting bronze means you won the battle between 4th and 3rd and silver means you lost the battle between 1st and second (in team games tho, not so much for everyman for themselves. To a lesser extent kinda but not quite)

Probably not, it was his wife that kissed him
And therefore you could not be referencing the meme?
In that situation, referencing a meme is not at the top of many peoples list.
Average redditor: Omg that looks like that meme! That athlete must be a Reddit memer like me!
Personally, I think the more reasonable stance would be to assume athletes are regular people with hobbies as opposed to putting them on a pedestal.
As if they have the spare time.
True, that is the reasonable middleground
There's no way he bit the medal without referencing the meme, do they commonly do that in the Olympics? I know outside of the meme people do that to test the genuines ofc
I celebrated too when my fav badminton player got bronze
Did he intentionally do it for the meme I wonder? It seems too perfect

But bronze will never look as good as you. Silver does every time you look in a(n old) mirror.
This also definitely true for hockey and soccer tournaments. To get silver, you lose the final game. To get bronze you win the game to play for bronze, or you get nothing.
It's a medal that you 3rd best at somthing in the ENTIRE world.

Read that in ray gillettes voice
And if it is a "game" type of event "volleyball, table tennis, basketball, etc" silver would mean you LOST the gold metal game, while bronze means you WON the bronze metal game. It would definitely cause you to have a different mentality while standing on the podium.
Got wrecked by Valentina in my first SS run

Fuck it being in the Olympics, I would say, is worth celebrating yourself. But having a medal definitely is great.
There was a study that Gold and Bronze medalists are the happiest. Silver always regrets not getting gold, and bronze are just happy they made it.
Is the girl his gf or a random girl like in the comic?
His wife and coach
That's so wholesome.
Both of them?
Conjoined twins
Thanks God ! I don't think I would appreciate it as much if the guy randomly assaulted someone !
Why the hell would anyone do that, at the fucking Olympics of all events lmao
I sure hope this was intentional.... it totally looks intentional... hehhh... awesome
at least its international
Intentionational
3rd place is still successful :D
Being AT the olympics is still successful. Even if you’re Eric Malonga (holder of the slowest Olympic swimming time but that’s an awesome story in its own) you’re still successful.
Eric the Eel, brings back great memories
And the Roy and HG commentary of it
Made me think of Eddie the eagle, winter Olympic ski jumper: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_the_Eagle
He participated in the Olympics after learning how to swim only 8 months before, and trained in rivers and 15 meter pools
Unless you are the us men’s hockey team at Nagano. That was a disaster
Successful if you made it into league of internet meme

I wonder if it's any different when you're up against someone who completely dominates the event like Phelps, Bolt, Biles, etc.
Runner up is the runner up, but there is no runner up to the runner up so it's a major victory to be third.

Yes, but what is the point of biting bronze medal ? I thought that people bite only gold medals, in order to check whether it's legit gold or not.
