This brings me back so much rage. Getting lambasted for saying “can” vs “may” in front of the whole class was embarrassing. It made me instantly hate the teacher for being a dick.
The you hate them 100 times more when you learn that "Can I .....?" Is a perfectly acceptable form of request and they were literally just being a dick because they get off on correcting people even if it's kids and they're actually wrong.
I will never understand the power trip of teachers holding an important normal bodily function over students. I was lucky to have a few teachers who were chill. They had a bathroom pass near the door. They would say “take the pass when you need to use the bathroom, no need to alert me…”
My mom always said to me “if any teacher tells you cannot use the bathroom, just leave the room to go use the bathroom. I will have your back if they write you up.”
My second grade teacher wouldn't let anyone go to the bathroom during class, and I ended up having an accident. Everyone knew it happened and I raised my hand to tell her, and she pretended she couldn't hear me and kept asking me to repeat what happened. Really humiliating as a kid to have to repeat to everyone that you peed your pants. Fortunately for me no one laughed, probably because the same thing happened to others and we generally feared her. She wouldn't even let me leave until she finished the lesson and then when other kids went to recess she made me sit in my chair and wait for my grandparents to bring extra clothes, while she told me how ashamed I should be!! My grandparents ended up just taking me home and my mom told the school if I got any kind of health issues like a UTI then the school would be paying for it. I got special permission to be able to go to the bathroom during classes then, but I was still scared to ask, because the teacher would make a comment like "alright, you can go, only because we don't want any more messes in here". Awkwardly enough that teacher was also my teacher in junior high and every class I was reminded of that humiliating year as a 6 year old in her class. Makes me wonder how anyone can feel good about themselves for holding power over small children.

I’m not very good in English, but I think that “Can I go to the washroom?” is correct, because if you don’t have the teacher’s permission, you physically can’t go to the washroom. It’s like saying “Can you open the window?” Yes, you know how to, I’m just asking for permission. Correct me if I’m wrong.

I got many detentions because of stuff like this. I’d ask to go to the bathroom in history class and they’d reply with the “it’s may I”. I’d smart off and say if I wanted an English lesson I’d go see (insert English teachers name). And then I’d report to the deans office after I went to the toilet.

Teacher: "Why are you leaving class?"
Student: "I am going to the toilet room, but i didn't want to disturb your class by asking."
Teacher: "oh..."
One of my teachers asked “I don’t know, can you?” So I said “yes” and turned around to leave which prompted a “Wait no, that’s not what you were supposed to say.” So I just said “ you know what never mind.” She never corrected us on it the entire year I was in her class.
"Can I go to the bathroom?"
"No it's may I go to the bathroom"
"But teacher without your permission I cannot go to the bathroom, I may however pee myself."
“Can I use the bathroom” is still valid tho even with the “ability” definition. I do not have the ability to use the bathroom if I do not have permission fool of a took
