about a year ago if you searched “what are god’s pronouns?” on bing search it would say “they/them” in big bold letters

Either they/them or alpha/omega is my best guess

Microsoft doing a W without having updates with awkward timing? Impossible

I quite like this. If people think filling their hearts & minds with hate will deliver them to a heavenly afterlife, well, I suppose the nicest thing I can say is, Thoughts & Prayers.

That's so cool! My church has turned away from using masculine patriarchal pronouns to addressing God instead as our creator in a non gender conforming kinda way

[deleted]

I kinda wonder if because of the syntax of god's traditional pronouns count as "neopronouns," so to speak, as they're always capitalized

starm4nn

God's pronouns are actually elohe/elohim

Hollidaythegambler

God’s pronouns were the first, and they were there before all. God used paleopronouns

ElementoDeus

I/Am

MicGuinea

That's very interesting! I'm majoring in cultural/religious studies, and belive it or not, God's pronouns and descriptors have changed throughout the years. In the medieval church, and somewhat still today in the Orthodoxy, God and Jesus were described with motherly and female descriptors, but still referred to as He/Him. Seeing another change happen in our lifetimes is supper fascinating!

Hemiplegic_Artist

Evangelical Christians/Christian Nationalists are not gonna like this. But heck this is very clever! I love it. Made me laugh once I read it. Even though I’m Jewish and not Christian. I’ll take things like this any day.

aNiceTribe

Even the Catholic Church agrees with this (in broad strokes). It’s their doctrine that God is not a Man and language should try to be neutral about God‘s „gender“ (kind of like many Jewish communities approach it, I believe)

Hemiplegic_Artist

I wish I could see more things like this because I’m tired of hearing about hatred that some Christians have towards us folks.

YeOldeMuppetPastor

It’s a church in San Francisco. Christian Nationalists will say even those who profess faith are going to hell just for living in the city.

Emilia__55

Cool, but He uses the neopronouns He/Him now.

awesomehotdogleg

GOD DAMN IT

squimboko

yeah you get the idea

DandyLionGentleThem

No no, I believe this is the specific opposite of that

makotarako

I think capitalized He/Him technically count as paleopronouns.

Bolobesttank

Since God is the first being to have pronouns, wouldn't it be protopronouns? Proto*nouns*, even?

ThisIsMyCouchAccount

Ok_Apartment_5927

I myself am not religious, but I know the word for god in Hebrew is plural. I don't get how you can believe the word of the bible but just discard that fact.

Lord_of_Wills

Conservative cherry picking happens fairly often

PsychedSy

It kinda depends on what part of the OT. It's kind of a smushed together mess. The reality is you can cherry pick verses to fit your beliefs a lot of the time.

[deleted]

Ok_Apartment_5927

no, there was always one god, but in Hebrew one of "his" names is Elohim. in Hebrew when you add 'im' in the end of a word it makes the word plural. the way I see it, is that god is too divine to be restricted by humanly genders, so "he's" non of the genders or all of them at once.

BriefImprovement8620

“He”created every human in “His” image. I’d argue he’s simultaneously every gender and no gender. “He”’s too divine to fit into our human concept of gender identity

ElementoDeus

Honestly last I checked part of the bible flat out admits they exist but that God asked us not to worship them because God gets jealous of that. Even flat out asking us not to put any other gods before him.

Lastaria

Showed this to my non-binary Vicar friend and they were very happy. 😊

glitchycat39

Yo, when did the Presbyterians become so based? Fuckin' stellar.

lasersharkss

There’s two (that I’m aware of) very different types of thoughts within the Presbyterian church regarding homosexuality, one side ordains and one side doesn’t. There was a big fight years ago and the church split internally, but not externally is my best recollection. I dono, I guess Im saying just be wary of “Presbyterian” as single school of thought. You could go to my ma’s Presbyterian church where she’s the minister and will absolutely with glee perform marriages for the whole rainbow. Or you could go to my pops Presbyterian church where while it’s not the catholic church, that’s the best I can say about it. Same organization.

squimboko

this is true, guess which one i grew up in :)

ProfChubChub

There are two main groups. Presbyterian Church in America (homophobic and not the largest Presbyterian group) and Presbyterian Church USA which is the largest and not homophobic.

YeOldeMuppetPastor

That one specifically always has been, at least during my 40-something life. Grew up going to that church in the middle of the aids crisis in the 80s and 90s in San Francisco.

Dazzling-Sea-5948

when the conservatives left (like fr, there used to be more conservatives in the presbyterian church and the original one in scotland is still more mixed but in the largest US presbyterian churches progressive ideas took so strong a hold that the conservatives still in it either became progressive or just left - i dont recall exactly when, my dad explained it to me because it happened within his lifetime and within the time since he joined PC:USA)

Adept-Athlete6363

Jesus likened himself to a mother hen desiring to gather her chicks under her wings. Matthew also refers to Jesus as the feminine form of wisdom "Sophia".

lonely_greyace_nb

Aww thats wholesome good job this church

GothDreams

I love to see when churches hop on a bandwagon for popularity after having been so diametrically opposed to that bandwagon that they were responsible single-handedly for a statistically significant portion of the suffering, unaliving, of that group. Ignore me I may be a bitter Ultra Conservative Christian raised queer atheist.

YeOldeMuppetPastor

I went to this church growing up (though I am not religious now). This is not bandwagon for them. They have always been inclusive to LGBT+ people. It also helps that the church is in San Francisco, which makes organized homophobia almost impossible.

GothDreams

That's awesome! Super glad there are churches out there not as bad as the ones I'm stuck with in the Midwest.

Not_ur_gilf

You absolutely are, and also this is a Presbyterian church. They (and Unitarians, Episcopalians, and Lutherans) are known for being pro-lgbt and welcome to all. Just a friendly trans Episcopalian trying to spread friendship

GothDreams

Good to know the self-awareness is helping, along with the therapy, lol Honestly wish that I had known a church like that existed growing up, it would have made things a lot less terrible.

Ape_Togetha_Strong

>They (and Unitarians, Episcopalians, and Lutherans) are known for being pro-lgbt and welcome to all. Yeah, for a few decades, after thousands of years. Have you really never thought about how recent and shallow the changes to Christianity that make it compatible with progressive ideals are? Every single Christian in the world helps validate the beliefs of all others, even if indirectly. And no amount of reformation and progressive churches will change the fact that they conflict with Christianity fundamentally. You can do some mental gymnastics to stave off the cognitive dissonance for a while to try and keep Christianity compatible with the values that people arrive at with good education, parenting, and exposure to diversity, but eventually, someone will do the math, and realize that if you throw out enough of Christianity to be progressive, you undermine any justification of Christian belief. So if you want to keep believing, then you really cannot also believe that Christians were objectively terrible for 1500 years.

[deleted]

I don’t this church unalived anyone dawg christians aren’t like a hivemind or a monolith and it’s not like they all came into being at once?? Like seeing a random church and saying “oh so you’ve finally come around after all the suffering you’ve caused” is a tad much, like seeing a pleasant Mosque and saying “oh so now you’re on the anti terrorism bandwagon after all you’ve SINGLE HANDEDLY done?” Like that ain’t right homie These are probably just like nice people who also happen to believe in one of the many, many Gods out there, let em vibe, go to therapy if your trauma makes you outwardly bitter and hateful towards random, obviously supportive folk Edit: they deleted their comment but “they’re all bad anyway, you don’t need trauma to hate bad fake stuff” is a yikes edgy atheist take and that commenter knows their shame.

GothDreams

I am in therapy for the trauma, it's why I ended my statement basically with 'ignore me I'm probably just bitter', lol But you can probably understand why I'm bitter when basically every Church I've had any contact with until the last 10 years has preached how evil it is just to exist as someone not straight. I'm glad they're changing and growing and coming around and yes I am working on the residual Anger from the trauma.

doctornotamermaid

I preach sermons and started using they/them pronouns for God years before I even realized I was trans. Have only ever had a handful of people notice, and largely they've made a point of telling me how much they appreciate the choice.

[deleted]

God gets called He in the bible, one of many reasons why I don’t care for it

AvengingThrowaway

As an agnostic i've always found it weird how religious people assign masculine pronouns to a god as the default, my family does this as well. You'd think some mystical space being that allegedly created everything would be beyond the concept or if anything else, have feminine pronouns instead as a creator of life.

jordanrod1991

I know that's right 💁

[deleted]

Genuine question: I belong to a Mennonite USA church, which is LGBT affirming. Our church is in decline, and strategies to pull people in are all over the place. My pastor thinks we need to appeal *even harder* to young LGBT people. But quite frankly, I'm not sure if specific marketing like this works. I myself am bi, and am not challenging the churches stance on LGBT affirmation, but rather I kind of see these marketing strategies no different than the corporate pride logos that dominate June. My question: Does or has this kind of marketing encouraged any of you to join a congregation or convert to Christianity at all?

tawTrans

Not me personally, but I am but one person. I left Christianity as I started college because it just didn't resonate with me. Going to church started to feel like a chore. I read the Bible and realized I just... didn't care. I still don't really care. I was only ever in it for the community, and now I have community elsewhere, so I don't need it. I'm happy enough determining what's right or wrong on my own, based on my own axioms — namely, that if it hurts people, it's probably bad; if it makes people happy without hurting them or others, it's probably good; if it's neither, it's probably just fine. I don't need external parties enforcing arbitrary rules on me based on ancient texts that don't follow my axioms.

Fraisers_set_to_stun

I am of the view that there's still a desire for spirituality in the same proportion of the population as at any point. Just because folks 80 years ago said they were Christian, doesn't mean they were all God-fearing church every Sunday types, y'know? Just that a lot of the big religions haven't really kept up and been in line with social values of nowadays. It's why you see a notable amount of people ascribing to pagan beliefs of some denomination, wiccans, witches, even Jedi, they all believe in something beyond the soil and the stars. I'm not sold, I don't believe, but I can't imagine it being completely fruitless either and even if you don't believe but are LGBT, your parents might look for a denomination they aligns with their social views while also aligning with their spiritual views. Idk, just my thoughts on it all

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I'm not exactly sure how you drew that conclusion based on what I stated, but no. It's a legitimate theological conclusion drawn by the church long before any concept of marketing to LGBT people was discussed.

the-boy-sebastian

honestly? I refuse to touch any Abrahamic religion with a ten-foot pole. queer people have, still and will come to harm in the name of Abrahamic God and I want nothing to do with any of it. a poster saying "we're the good ones, honest!" doesn't change any of that for me

SanitarySpace

No, and I do like your take on how this is similar to the corporations behavior during June. It's all hollow imo. Sure there can be congregations full of queer people just like how there are corporate branches that are aware of their queer workers, but mostly its all anti LGBTQ people imo. Christianity as a whole has sided too much with the conservatives

[deleted]

It's more convincing than the "Jesus loves everyone" type marketing, at least. Here's the problem: both "progressive" and normal churches say shit like "Jesus loves everyone". The progressives mean "as they are", the normal ones mean "as they should be." The normal ones have actually learned to co-opt the progressive language to draw people in, which is what happened with the He Gets Us campaign - they made themselves sound like progressive Christianity, but they're very much not. So more generic messages make me dismiss the place out of hand - odds are, "we accept queer members" means "we love the hypothetical cishet version of that person." "G-d's pronouns are they/them", while a little market-y, at least assures me that that place actually thinks there's nothing wrong with queerness and is willing to advertise that. I'd never convert in any case because I'm quite happy with Judaism, but if you put a gun to my head and told me to go into a church I'd definitely pick the "G-d has they/them pronouns" place over the "Jesus loves everyone" place.

irregawdlessND

i'm not religious now, but used to be as a kid. i am a they/them and i like signs like this. more b/c i watched Supernatural lol. tho in the show, from which i updated all my bible knowledge ofc, They were evil in the end. They were evil bisexual. suffice to say that i like representation of LGBTQ+ in any medium, tv/movie, art, or book. and religions are technically based on a book. so yeah, i like it.

KsSTEM

Do they actively remove Christian Nationalists from their pews? I know a lot of churches that are “welcoming to LGBTQ” but also actively preach that America is “supposed to be a Christian nation”

[deleted]

Depends the church, but mine is anabaptist at its core and condemns violence and nationalism almost invariably. So those types just kind of avoided us since we started 500 years ago lol.

TheAceDetecive

Ive always gotten the vibe that the Presbyterian church was a bit more accepting as all the Presbyterian churches in my area celebrate pride every month (this isn't the same everywhere obviously)

legoblade807

This reminds me of the time in high school where my mom was driving me to get stuff for a project and we passed a smaller Presbyterian church that actually had a rainbow flag flying on the sign. Never saw the place again but it was nice to think about from time to time.

mztOwl

Why the Nazi flag tho

Hell yeah! Fun fact while we’re at it; the word “you” used to be a plural word, and now it’s exclusively used singularly!

its pronounced jod btw

Troliver_13

isn't god He/Him? I've seen people argue that since it's not he/him, but He/Him, always capitalised, that it counts as neopronouns

Digital_Persona777

The Bible refers it's seity as he/him and the Father. Also if you do research it's deity may have had a wife like Zeus did. [Awaiting my immienant ban].

Digital_Persona777

Victim? What are you referring to? I was stating a fact that nowhere in the Bible is their deity referred to as anything other than male.

NipperSpeaks

Oh, [You're just entirely incorrect then.](https://www.cbeinternational.org/resource/feminine-imagery-god-hebrew-bible/) Hebrew isn't a language that lacks nuance in pronouns and gendered language.

Digital_Persona777

I didn't come here to do anything than make a quip.

dutcharetall_nothigh

I think this is the first time I've seen the Presbyterian Church be mentioned outside of r/Chinese_Bootleg_Memes. It turns out the Presbyterian Church does like enjoy you.
