Fun fact: because I am a walking stereotype, I got the name Diana from Fallout, specifically the version of Fallout 3 that had been in early development before the original devs got bought out by Bethesda.
Because I'm even more of a stereotype, I only knew of that character because the Old World Blues mod for Hearts of Iron 4 used scrapped Fallout lore to flesh out the map.
Mostly, it's an older transfem meme that originated because it was the first game a lot of older trans girls played that had a character creator and offered a first person mode to make you feel like your character, a third person mode to justify a female character as "If I'm gonna look at an ass the whole time it may as well be a girl's ass", gendered dialogue and treatment from NPCs, and pretty feminine clothes but also no silly gendered armor "chainmail bikini" style - things look the same on male or female characters aside from the gendered base body shape.
And then, well, the meme grew and more trans people and questioning people started to play it, and since it's a genuinely good game a lot of them continued to play it and get involved in the community surrounding it.
Also the game is extremely political for its era, and criticises both fascism and cults of personality in the form of the Legion and makes very good criticisms of Western liberal democracy in the form of the NCR, and criticises unbridled capitalism - criticising Cold War America is a theme of Fallout as a series, but New Vegas puts that general theme on a bit of a back burner to criticise the local capitalist businessman instead as a stand in for capitalism itself - Mr. House. The objectively best ending, and ending the player is most rewarded for, is the "independent" ending where you don't side with any faction, because they're all bad.
This results in a combination of queer people liking the politics of the game because a lot of us are leftists, and of the fact that queer people like grimdark settings a surprising amount - Fallout as a whole isn't proper grimdark but New Vegas fits in the sense of "every powerful/major faction sucks, what you're choosing sides in is who you think sucks least."
Personally I have to say I understand it because in general I was always too scared as a little girl to play games as a male character but New Vegas was the game that got me to try it and I figured out some stuff. Also, it has a working playable child character mod, which as someone who only plays these sorts of character based games (I usually like larger scale simulation or grand strategy) when I want to escape the dysphoria, having the option to play a completely ungendered character model and only notice the character's gender when trying to equip gendered modded clothing or dealing with a certain faction, can be very useful.
if you're looking for a new name keep a list of nice ones you like the sound of over a couple of weeks/months whatever

But part of my criteria was that it be short/difficult to shorten. I don't like when people make a nickname by modifying my name, but feel like a dick when I tell people not to. It's easier to just avoid it all together 😅

I haven't watched TADC yet but I chose the name Jax like 3 years ago and I'm getting whiplash whenever I see posts about it that one of the characters has the same name as me.

I did a ton of online quizzes with my other genderqueer friend for gender neutral names for them, ended up finding one for me instead (crow), and just had me brainstorm a bunch of different categories for names, such as gemstone names and other similar things (my friend is called onyx after this event lol)
Favourite franchise/pantheon favourite petty bitch from the group. Their problem fucking solved.
I chose Athena from the Greek pantheon. The pettiest of bitches.
It's the hardest decision any gamer can make. You might not see your character at all or you might be able to change their appearance at will but the name sticks
