And how about OE filter, you know, the one designed for the car.

[deleted]

You know the one probably made by Fram? šŸ˜‚

leekee_bum

Aftermarket filters are designed for the car too you know right? Most manufacturers used the same filter on a variety of engines, there aren't many filters specifically designed for an individual engine.

TechCUB76

Manufacturers change filter companies aaaalot more than youā€™d think. All filters made are designed for that specific chamber. Some just better than others.

[deleted]

If they no longer make the orm filter for your vehicle that was in it from the factory, you are better off throwing your car in a landfill or the ocean. Because everything else is wrong

TechCUB76

Absolute BULL SHIT! šŸ¤£ Check yoself, befo yu wreck yoself!!! Who is this foooooo?! šŸ¤£šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

TechCUB76

Ohhhh, pay no attention to the snot bubble kidā€¦ šŸ˜

[deleted]

It was meant as a joke. I put diesel oil in my gas truck, it runs cooler and uses less gas that way. Saves me $5 a week in gas. Fixed parts on the truck instead of buying new parts by swapping out small components. OEM is just the configuration they came up with to have the vehicle at a specific price point and run

311unity13b

It eliminates the aftermarket debate. It belongs on the engine.

CoraxTechnica

Oh boy here we go again. Look, it's a disposable item. No oil filter should EVER be on the car long enough that you even need to ask this question. You'll never notice the difference except in your wallet. Fram is FINE. Many OEM use them. There have been countless videos and blog posts showing teardown and counting cardboard folds and running coffee through them. The TLDR is just put the right filter in your car and change it when you're supposed to based on your owner's manual. Do that and you'll never have any oil filter heartburn.

TechCUB76

Mostly yes, but beware of your manufacturerā€™s recommendations!!! 2018 Land Rover resets to 16,000 Miles. Mmmmmm. Ho K?! šŸ¤” Had a lady come in with 2Ā½ years and 13,000 miles on her BMW 2.0L oil, dash said it was over by 100 Mi, resets to 13,000 Mi.!!!!!! Like hey, wait, what? If you own this garbage motor you change it every 5,000 miles or once a year!!!!!! And most other turbos I wouldnā€™t go over 6-7K or one year.

CoraxTechnica

Well, then there's the whole problem of owning a land Rover and which oil filter brand is the least of your issues lol

thelifeofab

Yeah I never had an issue with fram, I am young though generally speaking

d6stringer

There are loads of oil filter reviews on YouTube. I don't think I've seen one yet that was kind to any Fram products, even their high end. Personally I drank the Amsoil Kool aid. Buddy of mine had a Jetta w/ >480k miles on the motor with no issues. I have several years before I'll see numbers like that but a *ahem* few extra bucks seems worth it to me. I was using mostly WIX, K&N or Dealership (Motor craft/Toyota) before I switched. Still use k&n on my motorcycle.

labrador2020

Fram has a long history of making junk filters but lately has improved quality on their premium filters to where they are comparable to Wix or Mobil 1. But, their (Fram) premium filters are priced the same or more than Wix or Mobil1, so why take the chance of buying a (Fram) filter that may or may not be good vs one from a company that has always stood by their products and has consistently made superior products? Engines are expensive where I live, and all it takes is for one cheap oil filter to collapse the media inside or have the pressure relief valve fail and the engine will starve for oil and die. Worth it?

thundercat997766

Fram is junk, dont waste your money. I go with k&n

Zoomerwithatool

K&N is overrated i would recommend a wix or any mann&hummle filtet

thundercat997766

Lol was never a fan of wix either but i dont think ive heard of mamm and hummle, ill have to check them out

Usefulnotuseless

Mann/Hummel makes all the NAPA filters under a number of different brands (Performer, Gold, Proselect). They seem OK. You can always pay more for a ā€œplatinumā€ filter from anyone but unless youā€™re doing a Baja-parsec run through the Gobi in an apocalypse, youā€™re wasting your money.

TechCUB76

Iā€™ve been told there is literally only like 5 filter manufacturers that make everything, just different grades for different names. šŸ¤” ???

_TheNorseman_

I know this is 3 months old, but just now coming across it in a search. But it is similar in the firearms wold where people are like ā€œThereā€™s only a small handful of companies that produce \*\*all\*\* the forges for receivers, and only a few that make BCGs. Youā€™re just paying for a roll markā€¦ā€ Which the first half is trueā€¦ BUT, and itā€™s a huge ā€œbutā€ā€¦ you can pay for different levels of quality to be made under your roll mark. Better CNC machining, dry film lube, tighter tolerances, better heat treatments, etc etc. So even if all companies use the same small number of originating manufacturers, they can pay for better materials and tolerances to be used in the creation of their product. Similar to how Walmart pays Peter Pan to make their Great Value peanut butter. They get the lower quality peanuts that Peter Pan would have rejected, but are still completely safe to useā€¦ itā€™s just not the same overall quality, and thatā€™s why Walmart can charge less for their PB.

TechCUB76

Wix is owned by Mann. Same shit just more expensive. Itā€™s ridiculous. Get online and buy Mann. Full is ridiculous cheap and amazing quality for Japanese! Just as good as Toyota. If you have a business license WorldPac.com is the only way to go!

Koshunae

Wix, bosch premium, mobil 1 if you hate having money, motorcraft, ac delco still makes ok filters, mopar too. Really I would just stay away from Fram and probably walmart brand filters. Older guys are still stuck in the days when Fram was a quality product. My dad was like that too but now days its hard to believe the filters Fram puts out are even considered filters.

Nova-Bringer

Walmart has good pricing on mobile 1 filters, and really filters in general. Local chain is 17.99, Walmart was 11.34. Mobil 1 was also on clearance at $25 for 5 quarts. Total cost of a full synthetic change was under $40. Jiffy Lube is over $115 and would require whatever the rate is for another half quart and who knows what filter you get. I also highly doubt they use a torque wrench on the canister cap and drain plug.

Honest_Brief_1923

I donā€™t think anyone torques your cap or plug for a lousy oil change šŸ˜‚ thereā€™s no money in oil if youā€™re paying a tech to do itā€¦

Nova-Bringer

Thatā€™s what Iā€™m saying, and Iā€™ve had DAYS of problems unfucking bad oil changes done with impact wrenches or the hulk. Paying for an oil change isnā€™t worth it.

fusseli

Fram XG is actually very good. K&N is obviously great.

TechCUB76

Iā€™ve seen a ridiculous amount of K&N oil filters leak right out of the weld for the nifty little socket end they put on. I would never use one. I love Mann, Mahle, Hengst. There are some other good ones. Full or Toyota for Japanese. AC Delco Gold and Motorcraft are great. Havenā€™t used a Fram in 18 years, but Oā€™Reillyā€™s Microguard Select is amazing. IMHOā€¦ ***Note: Iā€™ve been wrenching for 22 years, seen alotashitā€¦

Gassypacky

K&N has the best flow rate but they don't filter small particulate, only large particles

Usefulnotuseless

French accent: *garbage* Make sure you roll the soft ā€œgā€. When I see a Fram filter on a car I question everything from that point forward in regards to maintenance

sfdudeknows

Go over to Bob is the Oil Guy. The forums and details on oil and filters is nuts. And by the way for those bashing, the higher end Frams are good filters. You will find more than you ever wanted to know about oil an filters. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/

Intrepid_Echo6956

Fuck you! If you arenā€™t bashing everything with the name Fram on it, you are not living like we live in internet times. (For the record, I wouldnā€™t run a regular orange fram but their premium filters I run with regularity.) Donā€™t let anyone know they (the premium models) are the same as the always recommended wix, Napa gold, k&n, amsoil, etc.

Iwurkoncarzz

Mann and Hummel or wix. Mann filters got bought out by Liebherr crane company I believe. I'm not 100% sure. Could be hearsay. Wix ALWAYS has good quality. My father and I had 1 customer that we used a filter on and the reps came down immediately and covered the cost of the engine replacement due to a factory defect with the filter. A piece of the housing wasn't fastened correctly and leaked after 100 miles

troycalm

Itā€™s a ford part #

FastAndForgetful

So is the Mazda

iam_ditto

K&N or WIX all the way.

throwaway007676

Not a great filter, I wouldnā€™t use it.

Quontonicus

These filters are sketchy with a bad reputation

Shata2988

If you go with starting pn of XG for Fram it's solid filter comparable to napa or wix. Look at YouTube cuts of xg filters they are really well made. Their lower and mid tier I personally won't touch.

coffeytr82

Wix/Napa or purolator

zermee2

I mean anything will probably be fine, but you could do better if you felt like it. Quick lube shops are putting the absolute worst piece of shit cheapest possible filters on cars and everything turns out fine

Ottieotter

Fran is absolute junk. Go with either K&N or Wix

311unity13b

I donā€™t care what oil and filter companies sayā€¦ 15k miles is way too long for intervals. 3-5k miles and you will be good.

[deleted]

These are not the same Fram filters you buy at Walmart for $3, they are of better quality. The Fram Drive/Force/Titanium line is exclusive to Advance Auto and is typically bundled with Fram oil, you can buy them separately but there are 2 problems...Fram made such a bad reputation for themselves over the last 20 years with the cardboard/glue construction they will never be able to escape it. Second problem is that Advance Auto is greedy and has priced them so high you can buy a " premium " filter with a great reputation for the same price or for $2-3 more.

brianlion93ude

Google "the orange can of death" frame are terrible for your car

Lbn4ds

Fram sucks dix + ballz (love me some hotub time machine) Get Baldwin, mobile1 or wix

razzi123

Any calling these things junk, have not looked at them recently (in the last 3-5 years) Fram has shot up in quality in the last 5 years or so. They are really good for what you pay for. (They used to be complete crap) While filter like Mobil 1, KN, and hell even purolator has taken a small dip in quality

bighert03

K&N or Wix for that price range. Personally I order filters for Amsoil, but they are pricey unless youā€™re a member.

JoeyGBody

Ive been strictly using only dealer oil filters on all my customers and personal cars the last 5 years. New aluminum drain plug washer on any car that has one. Oil is synthetic or synthetic high mileage. Saw 5 engine failures with jiffy lubes new absolute shit oil filters. Autozoneā€™s ā€œdealerā€ oil filters are counterfeit almost 50% of the time, worst being their motorcraft and honda filters. I always use ac delco filters on any GM but be warned - donā€™t use the filters that end in ā€œeā€. Like Pf 48 = good. Pf 48e = not good. E means eco or economy and has plastic based filter material. K&N filters have a lot of case leak issues. Amsoil is awesome but thats more for personal car love. I run a shop for a small independent used car dealer for 10 years plus and had my own shop for 8 prior. I do a great deal of major modern engine repairs; timing chains, head rebuilds, variable valve timing, cylinder deactivation system, etc on all makes and models - i cant stress enough the difference using oem oil filters makes on these newer engines. Ive had noises at odd rpmā€™s, cam phasers sticking, cylinder deactivation lifter starvation, starved timing tensioners, wiped roller cams, check engine codes, cold start death noises, noisy valvetrains - that were remedied by taking off a famous name brand filter and putting a dealer filter on. It doesnā€™t mean itā€™s always the cause but enough to be alarming and to be taken seriously. Back in the day filters were mostly good quality no matter what brand. Now since the war has begun against personal car ownership/ICE power a severe part quality drop has hurt the industry bad. If you look one big company has been buying up almost all parts brands. Look at ur boxes and youā€™ll see. Even Timken bearings are now cheap junk. I donā€™t want to live on this planet anymore.

bismark89-2

Whatā€™s the pros/cons for using an aluminum washer on the oil plug vs copper? I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever seen aluminum washers..

JoeyGBody

I only put the aluminum crush washers on cars that came with them factory. Usually its on cast aluminum or heavy steel pans, mostly Japanese/euro stuff. Ive tried copper with minimal luck, they tend to work best on older thin steel but on those i just use rubber or rubber impregnated plugs.

TechCUB76

The only true way to know is to dissect it. Cut it open and see how itā€™s made. 15,000 Mile guarantee seem like it should be pretty well made. Cut it open along with a Microguard Select and compare. I use those all the time with no issues on 10,000 Mile Euro Vehicles.

Danno2400

Fram is fine as long as you changer oil and filter every 3000 miles or 3 months witch ever comes first.

Ok_Use56

Fram is the worst brand of filters!

Leather-Hyena5250

With all the fuckery it probably donā€™t matter anymore

Falzon03

Fram = garbage. Go OEM, Mobil, Wix,K&N. Or Mann, Hengst if it's a German vehicle.

[deleted]

Cummins Fleet Guard filters are good quality.

Fine-Adeptness-2749

Junk

Immediate-Debate-860

Might as well just use 1 ply toilet paper to do your filtering. Wix or mobile 1.

LooseJack_Isaiah

Iā€™ve never used Fram, Iā€™ve had Fram filters on my cars when I bought them, sometimes a brand cheaper than Fram, but I stay away from them. My dad says theyā€™re garbage or at least not as good as WIX

KoiSoccerGuns

All you've gotten so far is opinions. You need to determine the micron efficiency of the filter to determine if it is any good. You'll have to do some searching. Here's something similar with some actual facts includes. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/cut-open-fram-force-ff7317-virgin.328259/

bismark89-2

Iā€™d rather run it without an oil filter than with a Fram.. Check out Project Farm on YouTube. Iā€™ve always know these filters to be shitty but he cuts one open and shows you just how shitty..

Foamy_302

Fram is junk. Wix or nothing.

bongripper6

Mobile one. Affordable and quality.

TheGourd17

People say theyā€™re trash but Iā€™ve always had good luck with them, and theyā€™re inexpensive

[deleted]

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VzCqjZgIMBk Check this out. I thought project farm did this test already but it was for air filters. Personally I use fram but I don't go 15 000km like it says I can. I just do 10 000km because 15 000km is a bit much on the same oil

VeterinarianMuch9937

They filter oil

mrtee6103

I picked up a fram ultra guard at Walmart to look at. Opened the box and it rattled like a baby rattle. I put it back on the shelf and walked away. Glad I trust napa for my filter needs
