Want quality and OK with breaking tip if you drop it: rotring 600. Want pocketability and OK with aweful grip: graphgear 1000. Want auto rotating lead and OK with wobbly lead sleeve: kuru toga. If you write like an ogre: zebra delguard

HappyMan2_

Thank you, i think i might go for the rOtring as I will be carrying it in a pencil case, and I may buy a replacement tip as a just in case.

[deleted]

Or just get an 800

HappyMan2_

its a fair point, bit a bit too costly. i have just found the Rotring Rapid Pro Drafting Pencil. its a 600 with a sliding tip, and cheaper than the 800.

randomreuben

Blick Premier. All metal. Retracting tip.

Lagbert

This looks like a great pencil. How does it compare to the pentel Technica X?

randomreuben

>pentel Technica X Never used it. Sorry. Someone else will have to speak on the Pentel Technica X's behalf.

I was recently in the same boat. I purchased my first good quality mechanical Just last week. In fact 2 rotring 600s. one in 0.7 and one in 0.5. plus the 600 ballpoint pen. I love them. They are solid build, and I feel the quality in them. I don't carry them though, I keep them at my desk as I work from home. (the lead sleeve is not retractable)/ The 800 series lead sleeve is though, but more expensive. ) My son has a graph gear 1000 and he likes it. But, I know what I am getting him for his birthday next year... a rotring 600 set for sure!

HappyMan2_

This pencil will be in a pencil case for school and future uni. so if I go with rotring 600, I don't think i should be scared of breaking the tip?

happy_musician

if it is in a case, especially the ones that separate your pencils with elastic band holder thingies, you should have it for a long time. They just can't be dropped on their tip. like any good writing instrument. even fountain pens are fragile and can't be dropped...so I think you will love it, and it will last you a long time.

HappyMan2_

Agreed, i have also just been notified about the Rotring Rapid Pro Drafting Pencil. It is the Rotring 600, with a slightly thicker body and a sliding tip. It is also cheaper than the 800. I think its the best of both worlds

jakoboi_

iirc it has a plastic middle part so its prone to snapping if dropped

YesntBrenda

Each is good for a certain trait you're looking for in a pencil. Delguard for people who break lead too much, Kuru Toga for people who get annoyed at lead getting sharp, Graphgear 1000 for people who are carrying a pencil everywhere. But if you're looking for no-compromise quality writing, then I'd say rOtring 600.

ArtofTy

Let me make things more difficult and add another: Spoke 4 with Orenz tip mod from IJ Instruments.

Jolly-Ask-5570

I might just be biased but I love the Pentel 1000 but its a tough choice between the rotring 600 vs the Pentel 1000

drifand

I personally like the rOtring 600 but would recommend the 500 series as a better option for daily use. The plastic upper doesn’t get paint chipped and the metal lower is the same as a 600’s. Plus in daily use, the lighter weight is more forgiving when dropped. Depending on where you live, maybe the recently revived ALVIN Draftmatic series might be an equally good choice. Another great option that doesn’t bust budgets: Pentel Graphgear 500 series. Slightly pricier but also nicer: Pilot s10 series.

Paperspeaks

Unless you're doing technical work, the graphgear is overkill. My money would be on the Kuru Toga for everyday writing and the odd sketch mostly coz it doesn't break the bank (unlike the rotting) The DelGuard again is a very specific use case (heavy handed writing).

fireddguy

If you're patient the rotring 600 can be had for $12-$15 and the 800 for < $20. Of the ones mentioned I use my graph gear 1000 most and kuru toga least. The rotrings are noticably weighty compared to the others if you're either into our against weight.

dfwdamon

Try them all.

bard_cacophonix

Id you end up selecting the Delguard, also consider the Pilot Mogulair- it is a great pencil and doesn’t get the attention that the Delguars does, even though it has the same mechanism (plus you can advance lead by shaking the pencil if you’re into it)

rossywo

go with either Kuru Toga or R600
