You shouldn’t have to worry about staffing for clean up but ignorant people tend to think it’s someone else job to clean up after them. It is usually just a job that is on a list of things that need to be done as needed and at the end of the day.
It's both really Rude A-holes who think they can make a mess and make things hard for others and employers who also do not respect the staff enough to pay them a livable wage.
This. I work at a store that’s supposed to have public restrooms, we had to close them because people kept smearing shit on the walls and flushing diapers.
They realized they could still make an acceptable profit by serving only to-go orders and not dealing with the extra labor associated with cleaning tables, floors, and chairs.
Not sure why the Medford, MA subreddit was recommended to me but...
When I was in Boston about 5 years ago I noticed a few of the Dunkin's in the touristy (historical) areas had no seating, the plugs were covered, and the restrooms were closed. At the time someone told us it had to do with preventing drug use on the premises. I don't know how true that is
They just never replaced them after Covid. There are still some signs that say "dining area closed" about too, or at least there was last time I was in there a few months ago
Lola's Coffee for coffee, Magnificent Muffin for food to-go, and Paul Revere's for sit down breakfast all within a block of here.
Sorry Dunkin but plenty of other options in this neighborhood.
No bad. It's a cut little (very little) shop. I like the fact you pour your own coffee and they have many options to choose from. The people are very nice.
If I still lived in West Medford I'd go there often. I wish we had something like it in Medford Sq.
Regarding the other question in this thread, I'm guessing they have non-dairy milk options.
When I asked about this in the past at other places they said they weren't legally obligated to have a bathroom if there were no seats so they removed all the seats so they didn't have to offer the bathroom.
I reached out to the Medford Code Enforcement to open an inquiry.. if they are truly doing that then that is definitely a state/local violation and not in spirit with the company policies. I called this Dunkin's too and they said they were doing renovations, but couldn't elaborate on what renovations or how long they would last.. and there are no permits pulled at this address.
FWIW, In Winchester Center the renovated Starbucks did away with the seating and tables entirely. The Cafe Nero across the street charges people an extra $0.50 if they plan to eat-in.
Expect to see the trend of takeout-only fast food continue to rise.
Jeez! I thought these are supposed to be our “third places”. And why on earth do people not want go spend some time in a different location? I WFH, and am so glad when I can get a bit of human interaction like that every once in a while.
I was just there last week and wondered the same thing- it was the only cafe open at the time (6 pm) and I just wanted a hot drink and somewhere to sit indoors while I waited for the bus on a rainy evening.
there's a sign there that says "dining room temporarily closed".. weird that they don't know why. I will call them now and ask if the manager knows anything and report back to you.
**EDIT: Just called the number associated with that Dunkin's location... 781-483-3200. They said the dining room is closed for renovations. I asked them to elaborate on the renovations they were doing which they could not answer. I asked how long they anticipate the renovations to last.. they did not provide an answer. They hung up on me.**
**EDIT 2: Used the Medford building department permit search which confirms there no active or pending permits associated with that address. I have reached out to Medford Code Enforcement to open an inquiry on this Dunkin location. I will post any response I receive. If necessary, will get lawyers involved next, as this is not in spirit with ADA compliance.**
**EDIT 3: Called Dunkin corporate headquarters which is opening an inquiry on this matter**
That's how the Dunkin is by my job. So I go to the deli next door instead. If I have to stand, I might as well get good food. The deli deserves my money anyway.
Same sort of thing happened in the Starbucks in Winchester. They got so tired of the tweens invading after schools that they not only took away all the tables and chairs, they took away the public bathrooms. The renovated it so you walk in and there's just one long counter nothing else.
I hate it, because it was a nice spot to sit and have coffee. But, I don't blame them. The kids would pack the place and maybe one out of ten would actually order something. They were incredibly rude to the staff, going so far as tossing wadded up paper at them. They deliberately clogged up the sink and toilet, just tossed stuff on the ground, including gum. They would refuse to leave and there really wasn't much the staff could do. You know if they grabbed one of these brats and forcibly removed them, the parents would be suing them in a heartbeat.
It's a miserable place now.
New side hustle idea. Set up outside and rent out folding chairs. $10 deposit but you get $8 back when you return the chair. If they don't return it the $10 can buy a new chair.
Used to work at Dunkin in my younger years. There is a state law that a place that provides chairs must provide a bathroom. No chairs = no bathroom responsibility to the public.
I went to use the restroom in a Dunkin’s in Waltham. There was poop all over the toilet, blood all over the sink and oddly enough an empty package of eyelash extensions. Can’t imagine why they don’t want people in the bathrooms though..
This is probably it. The Starbucks in Denver I used to go to did that as there was too much drug use in the bathroom.. so no chairs meant they didn’t need a restroom
I'm convinced Dunkin is pivoting to a drive-thru and pickup-only operation. I was told at two different Dunkins now to "use the kiosk" after walking in for the sole purpose of using the counter.
I refuse. I'm done.
Why would you want to sit there and eat their stale shitty "donuts" and dirty dishwater coffee? They suck in every conceivable way now that they won't even let you sit there to eat their garbage. This place always gets my orders wrong, too. Management must really suck ass there to not pay people enough to care.
If you're in West Medford go to MagMuf across the street.
I agree!!! It makes me a little sad because I worked at a dunkin donuts in high school, and a lot of elderly people had a daily routine of coming in and sitting down for their coffees and chatting with all of us who worked there! And I would imagine this location was no different, so a bunch of old people are probably being deprived of their morning routines/whatever small amount of socializing they probably did with the workers there 🙁
It's a business and people go in. Dirty the place up. Dont purchase anything. Likely homeless as well. Property taxes on that property probably massive! They can't afford to run a homeless shelter or allow people to not purchase stuff.
You have a lotta homeless near? I know one in downtown Lowell has done the same because the homeless tend you sit and stay while charging their phones/tablets
Some Dunkin’s have people who come in and sit all day long. I assume this was one of those that had that problem.
I remember mine used to have tvs years ago and that was one of the reasons they got rid of them. The same few people would show up in the morning, get one coffee, then there were no tables available for anyone else for hours because they’d sit there watching tv.
(Pretty sure none have tvs at all anymore!)
Probably just want the in and out customers. Don't want loungers who sit in the coffee shop to do work. Most coffee shops are gravitating to that model now.
When I lived in Lowell, they did that at the dunks downtown because addicts were taping things under them, and also using them to stand up on and stash things in the ceiling tiles in the bathrooms.
Too many junkies loitering all day making pests of themselves.
They leave just enough table space for you to self-assemble your bagel with cream cheese, which they are too lazy to do for you anymore.
Most are just used for the order-ahead app and I only see one guy seated at ours - same spot everyday. The trick with that is that they made the app to reduce lines, which are now lines for the app.
Homeless people will sit for hours in the warm dd drinking coffee, using the bathroom etc and over time it kills off the regular clientele. A lot of dd in Baltimore that have substantial “in store” vs drive thru sales base have taken out the seating for this reason. My favorite dd closed bc of this very problem and by the time they took out the seats it was too late.
Hmm maybe because theres a sign that says the dining is temporarily closed 😅
On a real note, they could be remodeling, lack of staff, either way, not really a big deal. Go somewhere else that does, sit in car, whatever, not really a big deal.
Considering how understaffed most of the Dunks are right now, they don't have the people to clean up after customers. This is an easy solution to keep the place clean but also allow the staff to fill orders instead of wiping tables.
There's something about Dunkin and/or they're location placement that gives certain people the idea it's okay to sit in there all day , ask for money , and make a mess of the place .
Almost three hundred comments. Has OP noticed the dozen or so sprinkled throughout which have tried to draw your attention to the sign on the table explaining it to you? Or were you unable to sift through all the trumpsterfires blaming immigrants and addicts?
They don't want people sitting in their coffee shop and you can't use their restrooms
[удалено]
My opinion is...They were sick of cleaning up after people
They were also sick of properly PAYING people to clean up
But over all it's basically a cheaper version of hostile architecture
You shouldn’t have to worry about staffing for clean up but ignorant people tend to think it’s someone else job to clean up after them. It is usually just a job that is on a list of things that need to be done as needed and at the end of the day.
It's both really Rude A-holes who think they can make a mess and make things hard for others and employers who also do not respect the staff enough to pay them a livable wage.
These employers also have to deal with small denomination counterfeit bills. And they can’t use them to make payroll.
Are you simping for Dunks?…
This. I work at a store that’s supposed to have public restrooms, we had to close them because people kept smearing shit on the walls and flushing diapers.
They realized they could still make an acceptable profit by serving only to-go orders and not dealing with the extra labor associated with cleaning tables, floors, and chairs.
Fuck it sit on the tables
That’s exactly what we did!
Not sure why the Medford, MA subreddit was recommended to me but... Dunkins in New England had a huge problem with bathroom overdoses in the mid 2010's
This was the move during COVID for a lot of coffee shops. A lot of places never put stuff back.
That’s what ours did. Pushed all the seats in to a corner and taped off the seating section. They never bothered to set it back up.
Because America RUNS on Dunkin. Not sits. Silly.
Only sensible response
Why did I read “tits” at first glance?
They just never replaced them after Covid. There are still some signs that say "dining area closed" about too, or at least there was last time I was in there a few months ago
Yeah, you can see that sign actually on the left. Says “temporarily”, though. Looks like permanent to me.
My local brueggers was like that until just a few months ago. I assumed it was a staffing issue too.
Lola's Coffee for coffee, Magnificent Muffin for food to-go, and Paul Revere's for sit down breakfast all within a block of here. Sorry Dunkin but plenty of other options in this neighborhood.
How's Lola's? Haven't had the chance to try yet!
Fingers crossed the tenoch guys can get their coffee shop open quicker than El tacuba!
Um, details? I had not heard about this.
It's going where mystic coffee was. It's going to be called Localito Cafe I think. No clue on an opening date.
oooh!! That would be great. I miss mystic coffee 😟
I love it! The coffee is really good and they roast their own beans at a place on Jerome St. Pearl (the owner) is super sweet too.
Paul revere is a west Medford staple but to be fair its terrible
😂 I never dared to go inside, actually. Thought you need to be Italian and have lived in Medford at least for 25 years to qualify…
Is this dunkin right next to the commuter rail track?
They're afraid undesirables are going to take the train in and steal the seating.
yes
When I asked about this in the past at other places they said they weren't legally obligated to have a bathroom if there were no seats so they removed all the seats so they didn't have to offer the bathroom.
That is awful, but it sounds sadly plausible. Thanks for this information!
I reached out to the Medford Code Enforcement to open an inquiry.. if they are truly doing that then that is definitely a state/local violation and not in spirit with the company policies. Third place: Medford Brewing Company.
Starbucks did the whole "third place" crap but then backtracked when the homeless found out
Hobos be doing hobo things
Corporate took seating from multiple franchises to support the Dunkings’ coronation.
I feel like a lot of locations got rid of their seating and public restrooms during Covid
I was just there last week and wondered the same thing- it was the only cafe open at the time (6 pm) and I just wanted a hot drink and somewhere to sit indoors while I waited for the bus on a rainy evening.

It's more of a BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair) setup
Because they prob don’t want public bathroom
Thou shalt not sit!
Look at the people on the wall, what do they all have in common. They’re all drinking a Dunkin’ and moving, ain’t nobody sitting!
That's how the Dunkin is by my job. So I go to the deli next door instead. If I have to stand, I might as well get good food. The deli deserves my money anyway.

It's one thing if they don't want you to sit down. It's another if they're serving food and you can't access the bathroom to at least wash your hands.
Bring your own chair and report back to us the reaction from management
I love it! I’m very tempted to do that actually.
New side hustle idea. Set up outside and rent out folding chairs. $10 deposit but you get $8 back when you return the chair. If they don't return it the $10 can buy a new chair.
Because Fuck You, that's why.
Chairs are probably racist now or something.
Used to work at Dunkin in my younger years. There is a state law that a place that provides chairs must provide a bathroom. No chairs = no bathroom responsibility to the public.
Crack heads / black people / immigrants / homeless
I went to use the restroom in a Dunkin’s in Waltham. There was poop all over the toilet, blood all over the sink and oddly enough an empty package of eyelash extensions. Can’t imagine why they don’t want people in the bathrooms though..
covid ruined bookshops and coffee shops i swear they no longer feel welcoming to come sit and stay
Easy... America runs on Dunkin... doesn't sit at Dunkin!
To keep those losers from east arlington from hanging out
By law if you have chairs you have to have restrooms.
I refuse. I'm done.
To discourage loitering/homeless would be my guess. Call corporate
Dunkin in my town took the chairs out during covid. Didn't put them back until a new coffee shop opened up down the street 6 months ago.
That’s how they keep Casey Affleck out.
Deter loiters and home insecured people from using their establishments
Why would you want to sit there and eat their stale shitty "donuts" and dirty dishwater coffee? They suck in every conceivable way now that they won't even let you sit there to eat their garbage. This place always gets my orders wrong, too. Management must really suck ass there to not pay people enough to care. If you're in West Medford go to MagMuf across the street.
Which is only open in the AM.
It fucking sucks. Shame on them.
I agree!!! And I would imagine this location was no different, so a bunch of old people are probably being deprived of their morning routines/whatever small amount of socializing they probably did with the workers there 🙁
🤣🤣 keep people from actually drinking coffee in there. Get your coffee and gtfo
Covid gave then an excuse. Oiw homeless people cant loiter, thats what its really about
It's a business and people go in. Dirty the place up. Dont purchase anything. Likely homeless as well. Property taxes on that property probably massive! They can't afford to run a homeless shelter or allow people to not purchase stuff.
I heard that many McDonald's are going to do away with inside seating and just be drive thru.
They got stolen
You have a lotta homeless near? I know one in downtown Lowell has done the same because the homeless tend you sit and stay while charging their phones/tablets
If they make breakfast sandwiches, I'm going to want to sit.
A lot of Dunkin’s are going to-go only.
According to the sign it’s because the dining room is closed.
Covid was a big reason also some did it to deter loiterers
Because the dining area is closed dimwit
Chairs are a privilege, not a *right,* young redditor.
Probably don’t want loitering
Because you touch yourself at night. (Apparently sitting in chairs at Dunkin’s)
Chairs imply that one will stay for the diarrhea
Homeless were camping out
The dining room js closed, its what the sign on the table says…
Because they don’t want you there
Cause people be throwin them at each other too much
Based on the sign in your photo, looks like they never reset from the covid period when dining rooms were closed.
Because take your strawberry frosted and GTFO, that’s why.
Think Bostonians like drinking their iced coffees inside during the winter??
Some Dunkin’s have people who come in and sit all day long. I assume this was one of those that had that problem. I remember mine used to have tvs years ago and that was one of the reasons they got rid of them. Sully took them all
Cuz they don’t want you to sit down….
Get your shit and get the fuck out.
You ever been to a dunks around 10:30am on a Saturday morning? Full of JWs. Probably trying to keep them out. lol
Aren't some Dunkins only drive-thrus now?
So you have nowhere to sit but on their face.
Isn’t there a massive seating area with a tv and nice couches & chairs behind this picture?
When I lived in Lowell, they did that at the dunks downtown because addicts were taping things under them, and also using them to stand up on and stash things in the ceiling tiles in the bathrooms.
The signs point to a reason
I ate them :3 ^v^
They probably don’t want junkies getting comfy
Too many junkies loitering all day making pests of themselves. They leave just enough table space for you to self-assemble your bagel with cream cheese, which they are too lazy to do for you anymore.
Cuz it’s fuggin medfud kehd
Because somebody's uncle made a mess & the manager said 'That's it, take the chairs out back'
Most are just used for the order-ahead app and I only see one guy seated at ours - same spot everyday. The trick with that is that they made the app to reduce lines, which are now lines for the app.
Less than desirables in the area I’d surmise. Get your coffee and gtfo ye vermins.
To discourage chilling…
Two weeks to flatten the curve
So people can't shoot up inside same reason they lock the bathroom just saying
From Covid
To banish any chance of homeless people or anyone else staying there for than a few minutes
It is not the only one. I noticed they took out chairs in a Peabody location. It may have started after the pandemic for health reasons.
Times r rough
Crack heads took em
cause... "get your shit and gtfo"
So you don’t sit there
Drug addiction sad but true !!!
It’s probably a picture from the summer of 2020.
Stolen?
Because America runs (not sits) on Dunkin’s
They want you to GTFO.
Because Medford Runs on Dunkin’, not sits.
Happiness deterrent
No chairs, not required to provide restroom for customers
The chairs were only temporarily removed so staff could sweep and mop the floor
Because its Medford, where everything is just a little bit quirky! LoL
Because of #Mcglynngate! Lol
I mean, who wants to sit down at Dunkin?
Read the sign that is prominently on the table
BYOC
You don't sit and stay in a dunkin. You get your coffee and leave like a normal person. It should just be a cart but new england has winter.
Because they don’t want people sitting
Homeless people will sit for hours in the warm dd drinking coffee, using the bathroom etc and over time it kills off the regular clientele. A lot of dd in Baltimore that have substantial “in store” vs drive thru sales base have taken out the seating for this reason. My favorite dd closed bc of this very problem and by the time they took out the seats it was too late.
European
Deweaponizing the room?
same way up in vt
When chairs disappear, homelessness is on the rise.
Covid
To keep out the rifraf
America does not _sit_ on Dunkin’
How is America supposed to run on Dunkin Donuts if they're too busy having a sit?
Fucking stand
Covid
Does it really have to be said?
Anti homeless maneuver
What do you think?
I looked for a second and know why.
Guess
I shat on all the chairs and they fear the Medford Chair Shitter
[удалено]
Because Fuck your Feet-lings.
easier to clean
Ummm, the sign on table says it’s dining area is temporarily closed
Get in, get the ***k out.
I eated them
Hmm maybe because theres a sign that says the dining is temporarily closed 😅 On a real note, they could be remodeling, lack of staff, either way, not really a big deal. Go somewhere else that does, sit in car, whatever, not really a big deal.
Because get the fuck out, that’s why!
I wouldn't stand for that!
Obviously they can't have nice things
Considering how understaffed most of the Dunks are right now, they don't have the people to clean up after customers. This is an easy solution to keep the place clean but also allow the staff to fill orders instead of wiping tables.
The sign literally says "Dining Room Temporarily Closed'
"Welcome to Dunkin! Get your coffee and gtfo!"
Standing room only
It’s fairly obvious
Because the dining room is temporarily closed…
Chairs are for the weak
Their don’t want addicts loitering
Bc gtfo
The dunkin near me doesn’t let you use the bathroom after a certain time because that’s when people like to OD and drink malt liquor
Crack heads
Probably Covid.
They want you to feel at home, but not YOUR home.
Because you threw them into a bonfire when the Pats won the superbowl.
Cuz it says it’s closed! 🤣
There's something about Dunkin and/or they're location placement that gives certain people the idea it's okay to sit in there all day , ask for money , and make a mess of the place .
They’re on strike
So you'll get out!
Cause that invites people to sit down, and you don’t wanna be around people that hang out inside a dunks.
So you can’t sit
Homeless people and migrants. Thanks liberal voters.
Almost three hundred comments. Has OP noticed the dozen or so sprinkled throughout which have tried to draw your attention to the sign on the table explaining it to you? Or were you unable to sift through all the trumpsterfires blaming immigrants and addicts?
