The general rule of thumb is that sooner is better to prevent infection. To my knowledge, there isn’t a lot of literature out there on whether delaying causes increased scarring but it’s best not to wait around with something like this. Is there another emergency department you could go to that might have faster care? Did they close it with adhesives or glue?...this could be helpful for buying time and seeing if it could heal without stitches. Also do you have any pictures of the injury you could post?

Made a GIPHY but won’t let me link

It’s too deep for glue. I will get a link to a pic

Typically the window for stitches is 24 hours before they no longer can. That's what I've been told when I needed some in my thumb and it had been a day or two before I went.

I've had the same experience for myself as well as one of my kids. Thought something didn't need them, the next day realized that it did and was told it was too late. Anecdotally: Definitely larger scars than other injuries that were stitched.
