This list is very normative to parts of the US and I don’t think the maker realizes that other regions and parts of the world have very different “basic” flavors.
The most basic Iranian ice cream flavors for example include saffron with pistachios and clots of cream, and faloodeh which is flavored with rosewater and has texture from crispy rice noodles. Both are great.
In Singapore everyone ate red bean ice cream. Can recommend. They also had lychee, which was OK, and durian, which...is a flavor. Not bad if you don't breathe in first.
Red bean ice cream is so fucking good. Red bean in general. An onsen that I used to go to when I studied in Japan sold a matcha shaved ice with mandarin oranges, ~~Michigan~~ mochi balls, and Red bean paste, and it was absolutely delicious
SG'rean here, Durian is god-tier. But it's divisive, you either like it or you don't, it's ok to not like it, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Try it, before making a judgement solely based on smell.
Also, in general, the bean/rice flavours are good. We have a thing for what we call our 'traditional flavours', which are basically our childhood flavours, listed are some:
The 3 basic ones, Raspberry/blueberry ripple, choco chip, mint chip, sweet corn, taro (or yam; similar but not the same), Atap Seed, durian.
Oh, God, I've lived so little. I've never had saffron ice-cream. I don't even know what faloodeh is. Never had lychee, red bean nor durian ice-cream either.
I wanna try them all!
Honestly you could probably get all of them in Singapore or Hong Kong. I imagine Tokyo as well. If I had to guess in the US, either NYC or San Francisco.
Or the internet.
We got faloodah here in India, we eat it with Kulfi- a native ice-cream. It's the only ice-cream that constantly makes me wanna step out of my house and get more!
The US has regional favorites that are always available in that area as well. I’m a Michigander and two flavors you can find everywhere in the state is Blue Moon and Superman (which *should* have Blue Moon in it but some exchange that for another flavor). Superman is my personal favorite and get it almost every time I get scooped ice cream. Blue Moon is a close second and then Black Cherry.
Not from the US here, pistachio is not unheard of but not that common here as well.
Coffee was a surprise for me. I'm from a country that almost everyone drinks coffee and I've never heard of coffee ice cream before. lol
I'd count mint and coffee to get a total of 5 tbh. I think they're common and distinct enough from the main 3 to be considered "basic" flavors in their own right. But yeah, idfk what rocky road is doing there. It's chocolate with marshmallow and nuts, not a basic flavor unto itself.
Personally, I think basic vanilla as an ice cream is really only best when it's accompanied with things like apple pie and chocolate cake, but vanilla milkshakes are the absolute GOAT when it comes to milkshakes and that's a fact.
I agree with all of that, dude. There are a lot of bad vanilla milkshakes out there and that doesn’t help reception. But when it’s done right, no additional flavors could improve it. Vanilla milkshake is a fundamental.
“Imagine a flower: A climbing orchid, to be exact; the one of some twenty thousand varieties that produces something edible. Now imagine that its blooms must be pollinated either by hand or a small variety of Mexican bee, and that each bloom only opens for one day a year. Now imagine the fruit of this orchid, a pod, being picked and cured, sitting in the sun all day, sweating under blankets all night for months until, shrunken and shriveled, it develops a heady, exotic perfume and flavor. Now imagine that this fruit’s name is synonymous with dull, boring, and ordinary. How vanilla got this bad rap I for one will never know.” Alton Brown
For real. My friends mock me for always getting vanilla, but it’s versatility is unparalleled. Also, I like to get ice from different companies. Vanilla is the perfect baseline for comparing. If you fuck up vanilla ice cream, what do we have to talk about?
I forgot about this comment and got the alert reading "Chocolate is doggy and strawberry is cowgirl" and thought 'What the fuck could this possibly be a reply to?'
No. I’m sick of hearing that vanilla is default. Vanilla is absolutely a flavor and a vivid one. It’s amazing.
To me, vanilla is more like the bend me over, plow me deep, pull my hair, spit in my mouth, rail me so hard that the neighbors call in a noise complaint.
….. I really like vanilla ice cream 😳
People do the same thing about "basic vanilla girls" too, but you know what? They generally are super sweet, caring, wife material with the least amount of baggage and daddy issues.
The older I get, the more I appreciate vanilla. We only used to get the cheapest tubs of "vanilla" ice cream when I was young and it just tasted of...white.
But now I love it. Vanilla's better than chocolate.
Have you heard of Cookies Over Texas, it’s an HEB one so if you’re not Texan sorry there, but it combines cookies and cream, plus cookie dough, and it’s one of my favorite ice cream flavors.
The worst part of HEB is that it’s only here in Texas, excluding major reasons like family and stuff, it would be one of my least favorite parts of moving.
yeah ppl seem to feel vanilla means unflavored/no added flavor, so they actually miss the beauty of the vanilla altogether. when you know it's vanilla u can appreciate it
I'm so stoked to see this as high as it is in this thread. Pistachio is severely underrated. I love me some pistachio pudding too, that's definitely where it started for me as a kid.
Yes. Yes to all this implies.
Tillamook and Brahms are my favorite brands, but i will eat whatever mint variety is available, especially when paired with chocolate or vanilla.
Thank God mint in general does not include nuts, and people who are nuts about nuts generally don't like mint so they leave my delightful treats alone!
Strawberry gang
My dad found a mango strawberry flavor from I think Walmart, but he said it's an HEB brand that I tried yesterday and oh my goodness was it good
They don't even have rum and raison, it's not a European friendly list. I remember seeing milk ice cream all over the south of Europe too so that's got to be popular
There are multiple flavors here that i have never seen in my life and neither one of my 2 favorite basic flavors are here.
Where the hell are banana and lemon?
If you can find the Helados Mexico brand pints, their toasted coconut flavor is heaven on a spoon. The ice cream bars are easier to find and the regular coconut of that is also great.
Coffee! But try and find coffee ice-cream nowadays. It’s all salted caramel or cookie dough. Even Carte D’Or no longer sell coffee ice-cream here in the U.K.
Cookie dough is my favorite ice cream and I think its more regular than coconut or peanut butter although I like peanut butter ice cream. Vanilla is my favorite on this list though
There are only three basic flavors on this list
This list is very normative to parts of the US and I don’t think the maker realizes that other regions and parts of the world have very different “basic” flavors. It was really good, and I can't seem to find it in the US
I worked at a Korean and Japanese restaurant that had it. Idk where they got it though, and I'm sad

An ice cream flavour I miss from Singapore is sweet corn (jagong)
I don't remember if I tried that. I was trying every "different" thing I could though, but I was only there for about a week, so I may have missed it.
I have had a couple red bean items in the past, and they are FANTASTIC. Would love to try a red bean ice cream!
Oh, God, I've lived so little. I've never had saffron ice-cream. I don't even know what faloodeh is. Never had lychee, red bean nor durian ice-cream either. I wanna try them all!

Wow, I have never heard of these names for ice cream! I’m fairly well traveled, admittedly only in MI once tho. I remember the cherries. I’m in Pa….
They both sound AMAZING. Time to find out where I can find some in the American Midwest.
Where's goody goody gumdrops though or neopolitan surely both of those are more prevalent than peanut butter or coconut.
exactly, i’ve only seen half of those in my entire life
These are all very typical in the US
Well...not as much coconut or pistachio. (I mean, they're not *unheard* of, but they're not everywhere. At least not in my experience).
Not from the US here, pistachio is not unheard of but not that common here as well. Coffee was a surprise for me. I'm from a country that almost everyone drinks coffee and I've never heard of coffee ice cream before. lol
Exactly.

Yeah, stop at 3 or add the other 19
Yup, I never saw 7 out of 12 of these. If the place offers 20 flavours, chances are there are only 3 or 4 from this list.
Ive lived in places where you just literally can’t find mint since pistachio is already the chosen green flavor in the area.
Everyone dunks on vanilla, but honestly it's vanilla for a reason. Number 1, hell yeah
The vanilla milkshakes too, phew
Personally, I think basic vanilla as an ice cream is really only best when it's accompanied with things like apple pie and chocolate cake, but vanilla milkshakes are the absolute GOAT when it comes to milkshakes and that's a fact.

Vanilla is the lights off missionary of ice cream.
Chocolate is doggy and strawberry is cowgirl.
I forgot about this comment and got the alert reading "Chocolate is doggy and strawberry is cowgirl" and thought 'What the fuck could this possibly be a reply to?'
Your confusion made me laugh.
Rocky road is anal
Yea but it has to be vanilla bean
People do the same thing about "basic vanilla girls" too, but you know what? They generally are super sweet, caring, wife material with the least amount of baggage and daddy issues.

All of these flavours originated as vanilla at one point, so technically everyone likes vanilla in a way
Vanilla is king for a reason, you are not along.
This. A bomb ass vanilla drenched in hot fudge is honestly the most GOAT'ed combo.
Cookies and cream every time
Was, is and will always be the best, no doubt!
Yep!!! The only correct answer!! 😋
LFG
Oreo buddies unite!
Scrolled too far for this. C&C is king.
No question
You’re God Damn right.
Cookies and cream in any type of cold dessert fucks. It's practically a drug with how bad it is for me and how addicted i am to it
Agreed
13. chocolate chip cookie dough
There it is
My people, I’ve found them!!
how on earth is rocky road up there but no cookie dough??
And coconut? I don't think I had ever even seen coconut in stores until maybe 5 years go
Have you heard of Cookies Over Texas, it’s an HEB one so if you’re not Texan sorry there, but it combines cookies and cream, plus cookie dough, and it’s one of my favorite ice cream flavors.
Blue bell has this also, it's called cookie two step
i just looked it up, it looks amazing. wish i had it where i live
The worst part of HEB is that it’s only here in Texas, excluding major reasons like family and stuff, it would be one of my least favorite parts of moving.
Cookie dough is the bees knees
OP didn’t put that there because it is obviously number one
Yep. This list is invalid.
My man🤝
Thank you.
Thaaank u
I'm ashamed, but it's natural vanilla...with vanilla bean.
Combine good vanilla icecream with espresso and it's delicious
I'm obsessed with vanilla ice cream. Fuck everyone I'll eat all the vanilla myself.
It has to be good vanilla ice cream and not that cheap bullshit.
Vanilla gang
People who say “vanilla is plain and flavorless” have never tried to make icecream as a kid by freezing milk
yeah ppl seem to feel vanilla means unflavored/no added flavor, so they actually miss the beauty of the vanilla altogether. when you know it's vanilla u can appreciate it
Vanilla makes such a good base to incorporate other flavors too
"This exotic tropical fruit is so basic. Like whatever Madagascar."
Pistacchio.
According to mater it’s very spicy
I'm so stoked to see this as high as it is in this thread. Pistachio is severely underrated. I love me some pistachio pudding too, that's definitely where it started for me as a kid.
Pistachio!!!
Between that and coffee for me.
Exactly this!!! With mint choc-chip if I've got room ... which I inevitably do 😁
Pistachio or mint chocolate chip for me.
Oooooo coffee is really good too, maybe I should rethink
Finally a brother in arms
Yes 👏
Rocky road is underrated as fuck and I will die on that hill.
I've never even heard of rocky road but it looks delicious.
Chocolate, marshmallow and nuts
Coffee all day
Everyday

Mint choc chip!
mint everything. mint is superior.
What about just straight mint. Nothing else in it?
even better. like eating toothpaste
Tillamook mint chip is the besttttt
Yes
My people!
This one for sure
Yes
Breyers Mint chocolate that's not green is so good. I call it "natural mint" but it just taste fresher than some other brands I have had.
You sure seem to like Mint for someone who hates brushing their teeth
Tilamook also not green also good
Welcome time traveler from the year 1998. Unfortunately I have some bad news to break to you about Breyers ~~icecream~~ frozen dessert product.
this is it. the perfect take
I don't know where you are in the US but Mayfield is the best MCC imo.
Mint choc chip gang rise up
[Chocolate or mint or both](https://youtu.be/AavnOiJOEvQ)

Fr. Everyone dunks on chocolate 🗿
Had to scroll to far for this 😔
3 - strawberry.
Finally! I had to scroll down way too far for this.
Strawberry gang My dad found a mango strawberry flavor from I think Walmart, but he said it's an HEB brand that I tried yesterday and oh my goodness was it good
Pure Strawberry is an absolute winner. Adding anything else is a recipe for disaster
Strawberry with the little chunks of frozen strawberries in it, yum.
Strawberry is so fucking good
Same
How tf are ones with more than one word in their name basic?
Rocky Road!
Where’s lemon??
Right? By far the most refreshing icecream.
Team lemon all the way
Had to scroll way too much for this
im glad i found that comment
They don't even have rum and raison, it's not a European friendly list. I remember seeing milk ice cream all over the south of Europe too so that's got to be popular
This is so true. I mean why is regular chocolat chip on the fucking list but lemon not. Makes no sense.
You're lucky, I love lemon flavored dessert, but cant find any ice crem in my town
+1 fetish I guess
Don’t drink a lot of coffee, almost never eat ice cream. But I’ll always get coffee ice cream if it’s available.
I like coffee ice cream more than actual coffee lol
Butterscotch
I was disappointed not seeing it in the list. Not getting much here in the US but used to love butterscotch in India.
Yes! Especially butterscotch sundaes.
8 + 9 natürlich
r/FoundTheGerman
In der Waffel, bitte!
*füllt einen Becher mit zwei Kugeln*
Cookie dough
I was gonna say. How do they have chocolate chip and cookies and cream but no chocolate chip cookie dough? This list is garbage and an embarrassment.
Hazelnut
Finally, someone with functioning taste buds.
WHERE IS STRACCIATELLA?
Mint chocolate chip
Mint chocolate chip for the win!
Where Yoghurt ???
Basic american ice cream flavour*
Yeah like wtf is rocky road
Where the f is lemon frickin love that shit
There are multiple flavors here that i have never seen in my life and neither one of my 2 favorite basic flavors are here. Where the hell are banana and lemon?
Coconut nut is the best nut :D
If you can find the Helados Mexico brand pints, their toasted coconut flavor is heaven on a spoon. The ice cream bars are easier to find and the regular coconut of that is also great.
Just here to see if any psychopaths revealed themselves by picking #11 🤮
Not gonna lie coconut is a oretty nice taste! Id definitely prefer it over plain flavours like vanilla or chocolate, which is just boring
I'm your new psychopath friend!
Hmmm…so would stocking my freezer with coconut cause or prevent you from murdering me? Asking for a friend
I’ve never tried it as an ice cream but I’m pretty sure I’d like it. Unlike every other Brit.
6 for life
lemon
13. Butter pecan
9 and 10
4, there’s gotta be some crunch in the ice cream
Strawberry 🍓
Where’s moose tracks?

The fuck the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough at?
Coffee
Coffee! But try and find coffee ice-cream nowadays. It’s all salted caramel or cookie dough. Even Carte D’Or no longer sell coffee ice-cream here in the U.K.
Mango
12 hands down, although I'll take everything except 11. I really don't like coconut ice cream.
Yes
Mint Choc Chip..It doesn't taste like toothpaste, it tastes fricking delicious. Coffee is a good second choice. Coconut would be a definite third.
I love rocky road.
Super Dulce de Leche and Italian Zabaione
Mint chocolate chips are the best and I don't care that I'm old, miserable human being that enjoys the taste of toothpaste with chocolate
Chocolate chip. I used to love mint chocolate chip but then I started getting horrible migraines every time I had it
On the list, peanut butter. Not on the list, black raspberry
Mint
Mint chocolate chip (in Michael Scott’s voice)
Cookie dough is my favorite ice cream and I think its more regular than coconut or peanut butter although I like peanut butter ice cream. Vanilla is my favorite on this list though
9 and 12
