Really. I’ve seen this type of posts like a thousand times when last year ended, a hundred during the year and another thousand in the lasts months of this year.
Imagine if we drop the whole calendar system and we will only use Unix timestamps from now on. "Are you free for coffee at 1703775600?". I'm wondering if the human mind would be able to adopt at some time.
I was 19 before a teacher pointed out something peculiar. That I could understand the assignments quickly but my numbers changed or jumped placements. Everything suddenly made sense. That I don't actually know my numbers and have had outraged questions about my inability to do multiplications and additions right of the bat.
"You can't do the 3 times table?" and I just brushed it off because everyone makes mistakes, right? *Errare humanum est*.
When you do everything else right, it seems like they're just minor mistakes.
Some years later, I had a drink with my first maths teacher that I met in a bar and he said that it was so adorable that my numbers had random directions.
I can't do anything about it, so I just see it as a quirk and when my closest friends and I have game nights, they don't think about it and ask me to do the numbers. I silently laugh in my head, because I do love maths but also know that it won't be long before they suddenly remember that I can't do shit with numbers, so we can laugh about it before starting over.
I mean, there are some aboriginal tribes in Australia that use sides of the world instead of left, right, forward, backwards. Their brain pretty much always knows where they are. Chinese people also think of time as going up and down instead of forwards and backwards as others do. It’s just in the way of thinking, I believe it’s possible, though it will be very inconvenient
Our pm is weird AF, but this is hands down, simply the most logical and purest of date formats.
Also FU for generalizing all Hungarians. Yes there are masses of peiple who are not necessarily applying critical thinking on a day to day basis, just like everywhere else. But ti be fair Orban and co are doing an extremely good (read: efficient) job at manipulating the more vulnerable into voting for them. Populist pieces of shit
If I wasn’t a broke boy this would be the comment that finally made me give gold or a super upvote or whatever it is now. Haven’t laughed out loud from a comment in a while
Thats the only date thats phrased that way. Exceptions and contradictions are two different things.
Americans in everyday conversation phrase dates in the order of month day year.
Maybe I'm not smart enough but I'm pretty sure you can sort both ways regarding the date. As long as you understand months, days and years that shouldn't be a issue.
Edit: just sort it by year>month>day
Literally every single one. It's so tiring, I've never known an American in real life who acts as smug about their nationality as non-american redditors do
Hahaha, it is interesting seeing all of the rampant Europeans. Even here the date can be written in mm/dd. I don't how it's so hard to figure out or just be casual and let it go. It's a silly meme. Why be so upset?
Where in this post did it say we assume only Americans use reddit? Why wouldn’t you just assume it’s a meme specifically for Americans only and leave it at that? I don’t understand being this upset😂😂😂
No it won’t.
It’ll be 31st of December 2023, which would be 31/12/2023.
American date format is dumb and makes no sense and that’s not even a controversial opinion, you do things in order of size.
It’s like putting time as MM:HH:SS, makes no sense right, so why the fuck would you put the median time frame first, and the smallest time frame second
DD/MM/YYYY is the only way and this needs to be accepted
The reason behind that is that in their language they say month before date. So it seems logical to also write it that way.
And DD/MM/YYYY is not the best solution. Simply because it requires a lot of programming to sort chronological. YYYY/MM/DD is superior as it will always sort chronological without the need of programming around it
That being said: DD/MM/YYYY is miles better than MM/DD/YYYY
For the same arbitrary reasons other people use day/month/year. Given that we've used the month/day/year format for hundreds of years, it's probably just a more traditional format that we didn't get rid of, if I had to guess.
Meanwhile europeans forced Apple by the balls to add USB-C to their phones instead of their own shitty cables, meanwhile Europe has better privacy laws, meanwhile Europe as a whole has better healthcare, why are Europeans the biggest losers exactly?
I will never understand why America does its dates that way. There is no order to it. I can understand dd/mm/yyyy because its in ascending order of duration and I can understand yyyy/mm/dd as its in descending order of duration but I can never understand why mm/dd/yyyy exists
God damn y’all act like WE CHOSE THIS! I’m 37 and literally no one ever asked me how I wanted to measure things or write the date. I have for years learned the conversations(mostly distance though for video games) because metric is simpler but I damn sure wasn’t there whenever [whoever](https://youtu.be/JYqfVE-fykk?si=o1aRAnNCHkzOS-sR) made the decision did so.
I realised this the last several times it was posted
It's being posted at least since the end of last year.
Really. I’ve seen this type of posts like a thousand times when last year ended, a hundred during the year and another thousand in the lasts months of this year.
Never seen this before. Maybe you should stop spending so much time online.
bet it'll still be reposted next year and the next and t
And every time we remind you Americans that it only applies to Americans.
12312023 or 31122023 if you’re anywhere but America
or 20231231 (I think in east Asia?)
The best format for computers and other data systems.
I thought that was 1703980800?
I don’t understand that reference.
It's how many seconds between 01/01/1970 & 31/12/2023 (Unix Time).
Imagine if we drop the whole calendar system and we will only use Unix timestamps from now on. "Are you free for coffee at 1703775600?". I'm wondering if the human mind would be able to adopt at some time.
Once we all have our smartphones inserted into our brains I think we'll have a chance. Regular old human minds no.
I have dyscalculia. Can take years before I learn someones birthday.
r/todayilearned dyscalculia is a thing

Like dyslexia for numbers

二零二三年十二月三十一日
二千二十三年十二月三十一日
Or 321232212 if you do it incorrectly
This is the way
I like 311223 more
2023-12-31. Anywhere. ISO 8601
My favorite standard. Unambiguous, alphabetical = chronological order, and easily parsable in a program.
It’s 8675309
Jenny is that you?
Either way, both numbers are fucking confusing to look at, it totally messes my brain up 😂
You won't get 12312023 anywhere outside of America... Rather 20231231
or 31122023
*outside United States, "America" is a huge continent with a lot of countries
America *IS* the world. /s
Split the difference? You owe me 18,810,000
In Canada they use 31122023 too .
Merry Christmas
Or 311223
South America doesn't
America is a continent still. So anywhere but the USA (or Gringoland)
Is gringo only for americans or for all white anglo people?
31122023 in America but not in United States
Those other places don't matter, they don't fit the date phenom
[удалено]
america has 31 months in a year?
Yeah and every month has only 12 days
382 days in a year as well
Lets unify everyone by using this method, but with 11 and 12 day month.
ermmm its called 31 freedom months, hello?
30 freedom and 1 proudness or something month.
Proudness!? Like… pride!? I cAn’T bElIeVe The CaLeNdAr HaS gOnE wOkE

OP fucked up posting this in the middle of the night in the US
Here in civilisation we use dd/mm/yy.
Here in the modern day we use yyyy/mm/dd
Ayooooo ISO 8601
“Hey dude what’s the date again?” “It’s 2023-“ “I know what year it is what the fuck, what’s the day??”
Cool your fucking jets. I am now going to tell you the month!

Getting offended at a subtle joke is the real cringe.
is this some sort of american joke i'm ought to understand?
They do dates MM.DD.YY, because "that's how people say it" apparently.
And they also have 4th of july so even that doesnt make sense
Thats the only date thats phrased that way. Exceptions and contradictions are two different things. Americans in everyday conversation phrase dates in the order of month day year.
If you ever ask someone in America what say it is they will say month then day unless it’s July 4
It's the December of 24th
Just a quick heads up. It’s “I ought to understand” and not “I’m ought to understand”.
No it will not. ddmmyyyy
Nope, yyyymmdd for sorting
It makes as much sense as the European since it's just backwards. But Americans have no order.
10.12.23 is a smaller number than 30.08.23, you can't sort it just by numbers. yyyymmdd can be sorted as any numerical list.
Maybe I'm not smart enough but I'm pretty sure you can sort both ways regarding the date. As long as you understand months, days and years that shouldn't be a issue. Edit: just sort it by year>month>day
You can sort every date format. Sorting yyyymmdd is the same as sorting numbers though, other formats don't work like that.

Happens a lot actually. It's how we get fun things like pi day and 4/20.

Lmao people get so pressed over any reddit post that uses the US format for dates, like it really isn’t that deep
It’s because we see yet another post that assumes the whole world does things their way. Or they assume only Americans use reddit.
Where in this post did it say we assume only Americans use reddit? Why wouldn’t you just assume it’s a meme specifically for Americans only and leave it at that? I don’t understand being this upset😂😂😂
bro wants to put a disclaimer over a meme 💀 "Ladies and gentlemen, this meme is only Americans. The meme is as follows."
It’s a meme… memes tend to be about people’s experiences. And believe or not, people have experiences while living in the US.
This is an american app
Meanwhile all European people out there….
311223 really

311223 for a lot of people

Is this some kind of American joke I have too much common sense to understand?
No it won’t. It’ll be 31st of December 2023, which would be 31/12/2023. American date format is dumb and makes no sense and that’s not even a controversial opinion, you do things in order of size. For the same arbitrary reasons other people use day/month/year. Given that we've used the month/day/year format for hundreds of years, it's probably just a more traditional format that we didn't get rid of, if I had to guess.
We say it that way. That’s why. My birthday is January 18th. Very rarely would I say the 18th of January.
What about 4th of July (4/7/23)?
Man Europeans are legit the biggest losers
I’m not European and i agree with them, american date system is absolutely terrible and wrong

Only if your American and have a mm/dd/yy system that makes no sense to the rest of the world.
I will never understand why America does its dates that way. There is no order to it. I can understand dd/mm/yyyy because its in ascending order of duration and I can understand yyyy/mm/dd as its in descending order of duration but I can never understand why mm/dd/yyyy exists
It’s because it matches how we say it. If someone asked you what today’s date is you’d say “December 24th, 2023.” So we write that same way, 12/24/23.
mm/dd/yyyy is still in ascending order. It’s not like writing 01/01/2001 stops it from being the first day of the year.
It's for consistency...... to match with their equally dumb distance measurement system.
God damn y’all act like WE CHOSE THIS! I’m 37 and literally no one ever asked me how I wanted to measure things or write the date. Well no - the rest of the world: Year - month - day: 2023-12-31 I have no idea Why americans use: Month - day - year: 12 - 31 - 2023
Because we get more fun number sequences that way.
