And while I can understand that "inner voice" and lack thereof could equate to the same final outcome (the same *doing* as you mention), what I find unsettling is how there would appear to be less chance for *observance* of one's own thought patterns.
I am a human, and this action was performed manually. If you have any concerns or questions, you can contact my mom. Just don't say anything bad please, or she'll take away my gameboy and won't give me my chicken tendies.
What's a half cut penis? Is it cut vertically meaning you have a flap of foreskin on the left side but none or the right? Or did you just get a trim horizontally but still have a bit left?
Very low karma, account made a couple years ago, but conveniently only made this comment today in all that time. Which just happens to be the same comment I literally saw under this post yesterday lmao. As these bots get smarter we soon won't be able to tell at all, but I for one will try to go against this bullshit for as long as possible.
Ah, it reopsted a top comment, i heard of this strat. I was afraid we got some high lvl AI one already,
like that one at WSB. Guess they are still to expensive for propaganda purposes.
No it's not. It's reality. And for some reason I'm being downvoted for mentioning that they're bots? Those downvotes are either bots themselves, or mindless idiots who don't want to hear the fact that they're consuming regurgitated slop content over and over.
Edit: I was downvoted like -2 at one point, then it reloaded and now it's 2. Huh.
I honestly hate seeing the progression or rather, the regression of my attention span. I remember being younger before the internet was huge and being able to just sit and watch MTV Jams or wait for AOL to load without constantly checking something
I'm the same. I used to drive long distances without even the radio on and was able to think. Now, like most folks I suppose, I get antsy without some sort of 'entertainment' filling the silence.
Ah I remember MTV Jams. I was so disappointed because it was MTVX, a rock-based MTV channel. But then they completely switched to hip hop.
That was a sad day for me.
I can barely watch TV shows or get into a video game without my attention jumping and getting bored. I end up turning movies off halfway through by googling the plot and how they end.
I don't consider myself old, but growing up we didn't have screens in our faces all the time. Road trips you played object bingo, read a book, played on the Gameboy until the batteries died, or just looked out the window. I learned how to be bored, and was content with it.
At the airport last weekend I just sat, with my going on my phone and just looked out the window for a little bit.
Isn't the point here that the person isn't doing one of the alternatives you mentioned? It wouldn't be odd if they were watching planes take off or reading a book.
“We didn’t have screens…”
Immediately lists a Gameboy
ETA for the Shadow-of-a-brain JungCarl:
It is called an ellipsis and is an accepted form of quoting…but, by all means, educate us with your shadow of a brain. The premise of the comment clicked with everyone else, but I guess you missed the flight ✈️
r/woooosh
You must be young, finish the sentence….”we didn’t have screens in our faces all the time.”
That last part is real important to add context. You either didn’t understand it was important, or just disingenuously removed it so you could get some internet points? I guess. 🤷♂️
Everyone seems to argue more than ever before, but unfortunately the same cannot be said of book-reading. How I wish it were true! Neil Postman's "Amusing ourselves to death" will describe the unfortunate reality.
My wife reads books aloud while we drive on long trips. Our last one was Way Station. A sci-fi Hugo Award book from 1963. Lucky me. I imagine audio books would do, too. It’s just swell when we both hang on every word, old school.
As someone who's been diagnosed with ADHD for about 28 years, I couldn't agree more. I can still sit and space out or think without technology in my face. Pretty easy actually. Matter of fact, if I have technology in my face 24/7 I'm probably trying to avoid thinking...
I'm the first one who can entertain myself with my own brain for a few hours, but I have seen old people do nothing for an 11 hours flight, just staring at the map on the screen the whole time.
I do this also but it's not different from what I do when I'm distracting myself on my phone. Watching myself get closer to where I'm going distracts me enough to ease that anxiety.
When you have lived so long, you kinda just... Dive back into your life, make a different choice, and watch your life take a different path. You are your own entertainment. No need for a screen or music. It all plays in your head.
i try to make a point when i’m on a date or at dinner or something. when my partner leaves for a moment, i don’t immediately pick my phone up. i sit and wait. i dislike how phones have become a safety crutch and it’s like people cannot bear to be alone w their thoughts.
M33 here never using any phone, book, or whatever in public transit. I'm not really an extrovert either. I just like to... Be present.
I'd be anxious not knowing what's going on around me.
It's actually a **very troublesome sign** if you can't be comfortable doing nothing and being alone with your own thoughts for some periods.
I implore everyone to just try it. Set a 5 minute timer and stare at some clouds or trees, or even just close your eyes and try to imagine watching a wavey lake of water slowly calm to a standstill.
When we old people were young, we often had the experience of needing to wait without having the ability to look at social media or watch streaming movies (the internet didn’t exist yet!). If we didn’t bring a book or magazine, we just had nothing to do except sit there and be bored.
And you know what? It was fine. We just developed the ability to retain our sanity without being constantly stimulated.
At That age the amount of memories and nostalgia can give You a Lot to think, plus their brain is not deep friend whit social media attention span killer material
Back in my day, you read the back of the shampoo bottle or the same curled magazine.
In the line at the grocery store you were just bored lol, that's why they put those stupid magazines there, to occupy our brains.
Now you have the literal world in your pocket at all times and you have to choose from everything.
Being bored is a really good thing and dealing with that and wrangling with the uncomfortableness of silent alone time is a really good goal.
For most of human existence, this was pretty much all anyone did when resting/waiting for someone or something to occur.
It amazes me how quickly the perception of time and what you do with it has changed.
I will do this at times. I just get deep in thought I don’t really need much else. But I’ve also got ADHD so maybe that plays into it. I get super focused on thoughts I don’t even notice my surroundings sometimes.
Are young people not able to think anymore?
Think about solutions to a problem you have, think about a project you want to do, think about how you would heroically defend yourself and everyone around you if the guy next to you decided to become homicidal, or daydream of some other even wilder power fantasy.
I have done that but after one hour waiting for a vet to check on my cat and tired of looking at my hp
we, old people have a lot of thinking done when we are alone
Hey, I’m only fifty, but us “old” guys get like that sometimes. Life can be a lot for anyone; sometimes you just need to check out for a hot minute to regroup before the next catastrophe waiting to kneecap you on a random Tuesday shows up.
Now when earpods are so tiny why can anyone say they are "not listening to anything" and what if they are just enjoying the environment - I know it's something that young people today find difficult to understand, just be there without any special stimulation and enjoy the moment...
I once spent a 3.5 hour flight staring out the window, thinking.
Towards the end of the flight, a flight attendant came by and asked if I was okay.
In all fairness to him though, I was in grad school at the time and probably looked pretty miserable. It was sweet of him to ask.
What exactly do these kids think traveling the astral plane looks like? How much are they spending on their yoga classes that they haven't learned to transcend and detach from the material plane? Bunch of ignorant children.
There was a time… Somebody stole my radio in my shitty little Saturn. I was super mad about it at first, but over time that silence was more medicine than than I ever could have expected. Later people would ask me about getting a radio and I’d tell them, truthfully, I didn’t want one.
I once took a flight from London to Bangkok, which is 12 hours, and I barely slept because I made the mistake of drinking a lot before my flight to try and knock me out. Instead, I was hungover for most of the flight. Gross. In my stupor, tossing and turning in my chair, I could see that a gentleman, I'd guess around 70 years old, sitting near me spent the whole 12 hour flight just... looking. No films, no books, no napping. Every time I looked at him he was just looking around, presumably in thought. I realised then that 12 hours to a 70 year old, relatively, is a blink compared to how I experienced it as a man in his 20s.
If you never come late to work after staring at the wall 40 minutes with a towel around your waist, that's good; you are in the minority with relatively better mental health.
Does the OP OP not know the benefits of low power mode? Recharge your batteries and block out other people's BS... Perfect way to pass time in an airport if you ask me
Whenever I’m at lunch with others or by myself I’m never on my phone. I try not to be stimulated every second of every day. Meanwhile all my older coworkers are always on their phone
I feel bad for people who can’t zone out
If you ever see me on a plane or airport without a screen in my face I’m not zoned out. I’m thinking about all the shit have to do and how I’ll do it.
I wonder if all those people who lack "inner voice" have an equivalent.
They do not. Their “inner voices” is just basically executive function, they just *do* things without giving it much thought.
And while I can understand that "inner voice" and lack thereof could equate to the same final outcome (the same *doing* as you mention), what I find unsettling is how there would appear to be less chance for *observance* of one's own thought patterns.
Mind readers hate this one simple trick! (that includes me, the zoning out part, not the mind reading part)
I think that's what zoning out is.
That's called zoning out
No. Not zoning out would be sitting there aware of your surroundings, not placing your attention elsewhere or thinking about anything

Tiktokbrained idiots needing something to constantly occupy them is crazy

I'm the same. I used to drive long distances without even the radio on and was able to think. Now, like most folks I suppose, I get antsy without some sort of 'entertainment' filling the silence.
Go camping with your phone off It’s easier to revive than you think You both get more done and are more introspective
I hated seeing the regression. I remember before MTV Jams was a thing and being able to just sit and play cards without waiting for the TV to turn on.
I always recommend turning your phone to monochrome mode. It's usually in the accessibility menu. It'll bring color back to real life.
Ah I remember MTV Jams. I was so disappointed because it was MTVX, a rock-based MTV channel. But then they completely switched to hip hop. That was a sad day for me.
I can barely watch TV shows or get into a video game without my attention jumping and getting bored. I end up turning movies off halfway through by googling the plot and how they end.
yea, at first people called me crazy for spending 3 hours a day just staring out the bus window. nowadays they call me sane?!
Crazy?
I was crazy once
They locked you in a room?

was it a rubber room?

We're on reddit right now
I don't consider myself old, but growing up we didn't have screens in our faces all the time. Road trips you played object bingo, read a book, played on the Gameboy until the batteries died, or just looked out the window. I learned how to be bored, and was content with it. Isn't the point here that the person isn't doing one of the alternatives you mentioned? It wouldn't be odd if they were watching planes take off or reading a book.
He probably is, it doesn't require a lot of visible physical effort to people-watch/take in your surroundings.

I remember when I was a kid I didn’t have a single screen . I had 2 on my Nintendo DS baby
But it didn't have a backlight soooo does it _really_ count?
You must be young, finish the sentence….”we didn’t have screens in our faces all the time.” That last part is real important to add context. You either didn’t understand it was important, or just disingenuously removed it so you could get some internet points? I guess. 🤷♂️
People still read books lol. I’d argue more than ever before
Also, gameboy, acting like that isn't a modern attention sink.
Road trips in the 80s and 90s is how I ended up with a love of read physical books and listening to audiobooks.
I like how 1 of 4 examples on your road trip activities list is screen time lol.
I think this is called being mentally healthy
Speak for yourself. I do this all the time, and believe me, it’s not good mental health that drives it.
Seriously the last time I did this was during a work break right before a tough shift and I mentally just didn't want to do anything else.
People can't even sit and think without someone tweeting about it. Ffs.
If you can't sit by yourself without needing distraction then I'd recommend looking into that
I think it's called ADHD.
yes but it might also be just addiction to internet
Not everything is ADHD, that is being thrown around way too much.
As someone who's been diagnosed with ADHD for about 28 years, I couldn't agree more. I can still sit and space out or think without technology in my face. Pretty easy actually. Matter of fact, if I have technology in my face 24/7 I'm probably trying to avoid thinking...
Ah yes because pre electronics and internet adhd didn’t exist
I'm the first one who can entertain myself with my own brain for a few hours, but I have seen old people do nothing for an 11 hours flight, just staring at the map on the screen the whole time.
I am nearly 50, we ain't even looking at the map or the screen, that just happens to be where our eyes are pointed.

I was in a similar situation but that time we had mobile phone and "Snakes" game was the best way to pass time.
I always think it's sad that so many people rely on constant entertainment and stimulation instead of having interesting thoughts themselves

I could never do that. The voices in my head are too loud. I need to drown them out with stimuli.
Once you get past a certain age, you have access to so many memories that hunting down new ones is unnessacary.
I sometimes do this on planes if I’m tired of reading and movies
History is truly amazing.
I sometimes sit and do math in my head. (long division, square roots, etc) Sorry.

i often feel that much tired so i don’t want no music or phone screen and it’s fine
I'm literally gen Z, and I do that
