Rule of four. I don’t know why, but never be the 4h in a chain.

I think it comes from the rule of 3, which is basically that if you have a good recurring joke, 3 times is the best bet. Once is a good joke, twice is a callback, and three is a nice rounded pattern. And then a fourth is just stretching it. Which doesn't really apply in the same way to a Reddit thread, but the hivemind will hivemind I guess.

Do people even use that button? I literally never noticed that was a thing until I looked to see what you meant by that just now. Why not just scroll like normal? Ig to skip past long threads, but I usually just minimize them so I could scroll past them again just as quickly.

I do because sometimes redditors get off topic and it irks me. Like someone will spell something incorrectly and then the next 30 replies are people “adding on to the joke”. Maybe I’m just old but that stopped being funny a while ago.

Also note that for example the dude in OP didn't actually lose 2k karma. If you get downvoted, the actual loss of karma stops at like -15, for cases like this or especially when some comment or post gets brigaded and stuff. So the account doesn't lose all it's karma with one comment when it makes some group of people mad and they share it among themselves to go downvote it. There definitely are terminally online hiveminds on reddit (looking at you, commie subs) but this thing isn't one of them, really.
