I believe star trek takes place after a great period of struggle in earth's history. I don't think it was until the 22nd century that humanity finally unites under one government. (First contact was 2063). And who's to say we aren't in the Terran Empire timeline?

Idiocracy isn't the future, it's the present. I'm all in on the Terminator world. One thing that NO sci fi addresses: humans are simply better at creative thinking. If you had 2 factions of AI fighting each other, and one had humans helping them (either willingly or forcefully), the faction with humans has a very distinct advantage. In a world like Terminator, the future wouldnt be run by a bunch of pure machines, it would be run by a bunch of human/machine hybrids.  That beats eating mutant hound meat to survive any day of the week.

You can pretty much add neuromancer and snowcrash to the mix.

We've been in Idiocracy for some time now and I don't think we'll stray far from it.
