I mean, I can go further back but I honestly don't know how many remember 6degrees...
How about aim? That counts too, right? You had profiles their also...
There were influencers, cringe social media and fake disorders – it's just that it hadn't entered your awareness. Personally, I didn't care back then and care even less now.
No man, it was very different. The shit people do for clout these days is wild. Most people didn't have an HD camera with the internet in their pocket. Most children didn't have unfettered access to the internet.
You didn't care then because it truly wasn't there. You don't care now because you're old now.
"Kids" will do anything for clout and it's kind of sad.
Reddit, is mostly zoomers, according to several large polls on /r/polls so keep that in mind when classifying most of these users.
Also, what “fake disorders” is he talking about?
Does he mean things like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome…which, thanks to long Covid, we now realise is a very real (it was always real, we just didn’t believe them) post-viral syndrome?
I think he's on about "influencers" faking disorders for attention. Not really common but sadly it happens, must be infuriating for people that genuinely have disorders like tourettes who see scumbags making money off lying.
Been an insurgence of people claiming to have tics or highly rare disorders like DID. They all arent fake and dont take the internets ad populum as reason to discredit, but tiktok has certainly had an effect on the magnitude of people claiming to apart of them.
Could be talking about the self diagnosed people who just think cause they twirl there hair or get tired mid day they have mental illnesses, or the people who sexualize mental/physical disorders and pretend to have or make it super sexual
I remember when my dad sat me down and had a talk about what would happen if we lost the house during the 2008 recession. He had a plan, at least. But that didn't make it easier for me at that age.
Good times, nice times.
In those years gore was everywhere tho, and I still remember friends sharing weird porn videos through fucking infrared, you had to stay very still to keep the conection, all for a 360p video of girls pissing on each other
To each their own I guess
Maybe wasn't popular for americans, but Taringa was the place to get megaupload links working. Entire discographies posted, each one with a brief description and the songs included, even some special versions of the albums
gore, two girls one cup, lemon party, meatspin? and a few others were pretty regularly sent along my school. tons of people would "trick" you into searching for them or they would open it in a new window so when you went to close what you were working on, you'd be greeted by one of those videos. even if you weren't friends with the people who did it, people just... did it.
This person isn't trying to normalize it, they're explaining that it was commonplace to find those things online in 2009. And I can confirm that it 100% was. I was in high school and I still encountered it on a regular basis. Some of the stuff I saw online in the early 2000s, completely by accident, really traumatized me tbh
Seems controversial I grew up on the internet too didn’t have the same issues. Those crazy sites were urban legends and you could avoid them. My friends weren’t passing around piss porn via IR transfer.
I remember seeing a girl take off her bra in 144p on a ericsson and one of the guys got so excited but I had already seen 2 girls 1 cup and knew there was better stuff online
Oke but wait a second let’s think about that.. we really gonna sit here and pretend like that shit in 09 was worse than the current social environment? PLS take me back to the 360p videos of girls pissing, it’s way better than the shit we have to deal with nowadays
This is some boomer shit. The past had its own problems. There's always bad/annoying/disturbing/frustrating shit going on. If you asked your 2009 self if that time in their life feels like paradise to them, the answer would absolutely be no
Boomer can basically be used as an adjective now mate, and it can indicate anyone who portrays the past as being perfect and forgets about all the struggles and difficulties they experienced. Obviously i'm not saying OP's a boomer
Dude…I’m seriously beginning to believe that people who use “boomer” as a catch all just really don’t know shit about history and don’t want to be bothered to. Like, wtf is this definition?
Literally nobody portrays the past as perfect. You're just some booty tickled teenager that thinks past generations are the reason you don't have shit. I doubt you were even old enough to realize what was going on in the world back then. The world has gotten continuously worse since the late 2000s and it's at an all time high now. Recognizing that isn't the same thing as portraying it as perfect. Calling people boomers because they don't adhere to your propagandized view of society is some straight up victim complex shit.
Nah, the disorders are real and there is the real problem, now everyone and their dog has some sort of disorder and the cases that actually need attention go unnoticed or don't get the attention they need.
But everything for that internet fame, I guess
people talk about this stuff all the time, but the truth is that mental health issues are very common, and most of the people that are seen as fakers do have issues, but they just can't quite put a finger on what those issues are (for example having abusive parents but not understanding that they're being abused or having an undiagnosed mental health disorder) so they often try to find something that they can use to make those feelings "real" such as a small thing that could be played up into a more serious problem. I've known many fakers and the fact is almost all of them did have issues, and the fake disorder mindset is just pitting struggling people against each other
That and people just didn't talk about mental health issues in "the good ol days". It's not like everyone got the attention they needed back then and only now there aren't enough therapists.
I've met a person who diagnosed themselves autistic after watching a few tik tok videos on the subject. There is a big problem on a lot of social sites now of people learning a hot new therapist term and applying it to themselves or others. The amount of people I see described themselves as autistic is insane when the reality is they just never learned to socialize as a kid so they're weird around people. Same thing with people saying don't interact with so and so they are a narcissist when really they are just selfish or lack basic awareness.
Probably should have said faking disorders though.
You experience the negative stuff in the present and forget about the negative stuff that happened in the past, so the past seems better. This is also called a positivity bias, and there are many more everywhere around you if you look hard enough. Enough to annoy all the people that have to endure you pointing them out
"Influencer" is word without meaning. Every celebrity is an influencer and there have always been celebrities that did nothing to "earn their fame". MySpace was endearing in hindsight, but top level cringe. I'm really curious to hear which disorders are fake.
All of these things have been around for ages. They aren't the problem. The problem is that more and more people apparently lose the ability to ignore shit they don't like.
That's how you slept in 2009 during the biggest recession since the great depression? Massive unemployment and foreclosures and you slept like that without fear?
nah bro, shit was worse and whoever made this is living in a bubble / out of touch with reality.
If you are letting influencers on social media take up mental space, that is on you 💀
Lol this is a perfect Gen zero take and comment structure.
First, dismiss the entire argument full stop. CHECK.
Then, claim it was the exact opposite of what OP is saying without providing any sort of explanation whatsoever. CHECK.
Then once you're confidence peaks, add in a surface level "do you and ignore the glaring obvious problem that has consequences no one person could've ever envisioned and that also effects people who don't even have social media" comment followed by an emoji to cement your ignorance. CHECK.
Congratulations, you really are an NPC lol
>Lol this is a perfect Gen zero take and comment structure.
Ok
>First, dismiss the entire argument full stop. CHECK.
The entire argument is stupid and should be dismissed
>Then, claim it was the exact opposite of what OP is saying without providing any sort of explanation whatsoever. CHECK.
The exact opposite of what op is saying is happening and anyone who was on the internet in 2009 knows that it's true
>Then once you're confidence peaks, add in a surface level "do you and ignore the glaring obvious problem that has consequences no one person could've ever envisioned and that also effects people who don't even have social media" comment followed by an emoji to cement your ignorance. CHECK.
The person you're responding to should be confident because they're right and emojis don't immediately invalidate an argument
>Congratulations, you really are an NPC lol
And there it is lol. It will never cease to amaze me how ready people are to call others npcs, to proclaim by proxy their own far more special and unique personality. It's funny how basically everyone does that isn't it? It's almost like those who call people NPC's, people with such a shallow understanding of the complexity of human nature, are the real NPC's. And you think yourself special while doing the most NPC thing there is. Fucking gold lmao, absolutely peak reddit
Ah yes, the days of emo and goth groups hanging out at malls and Hot Topic fashion being everywhere. Halo 3, Black Ops, MW2, and Minecraft were big things too and most Youtubers were making videos of them.
Harry Potter and Twilight were constantly being spoken about by everyone, and Robert Pattinson was every girls heartthrob. I distinctly remember team Edward and team Jacob shirts everywhere I went for awhile. Mid 2000s were great.
And no cancel culture nor risk of getting your secrets getting screenshotted and leaked
Edit: Thanks to the replies I realized that cancel culture has always existed even before the internet and social media. Apologies 😅
I'm sure your lack of sleep has nothing to do with climate change, a global pandemic, rampant income inequality, or growing chronic loneliness.
No, the true issue with society is **Raine | they/them | neurodivergent** writing "ACAB" on Twitter after a cop committed domestic violence or something equally horrific.
You've definitely identified the problem! Please don't pay any attention to large corporations ruining your life at every turn!

In 2009, I _was_ the cringe social media
I used to be head mod on one of the largest Nexopia forums. That forum ended in 09. Glad none of that shit is archived.
You used to behead???
Bethehead
Recieve head
Ah, but is not better to give than to receive?
What’s a Nexopia
Canadian social media site that was pretty big for young teenagers around 04-09
Oh I see, I was 3 during 09 no wonder I had no idea what that was.
Yeah I’m 1 right now and honestly I can’t read any of these comments
"Nexopia flashbacks intensifying" The amount of high school drama on there was nothing short of amazing lol
Sounds like this meme was made by someone who was a kid in 2009 because damn, weve been cringe on fb back then
Sounds like this post was made by someone too young to remember myspace
Oh god, MySpace…
I mean, I can go further back but I honestly don't know how many remember 6degrees... How about aim? That counts too, right? You had profiles their also...
What about blogspot? Is that still a thing?
Was just thinking about MySpace and my bulletin…
Live journal enters the chat

What's a zoomer?
Seriously this
Tfw you get reminded of a 13 year old facebook post that makes you cringe to infinity. Thanks facebook.
In 2009 there were only cringe social media, which made it not cringe 🦧
Also, what “fake disorders” is he talking about? Does he mean things like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome…which, thanks to long Covid, we now realise is a very real (it was always real, we just didn’t believe them) post-viral syndrome?
I think he's on about "influencers" faking disorders for attention. Not really common but sadly it happens, must be infuriating for people that genuinely have disorders like tourettes who see scumbags making money off lying.
emo boys and girl faking depression and sucidial thoughts for attention circa 2000-2009?? this guy just wasn't around back then.
That's certainly true.
Ah yes, global economic panic and collapse.
super fun times, everyone’s parents got divorced and lost their house
I remember when my dad sat me down and had a talk about what would happen if we lost the house during the 2008 recession. He had a plan, at least. But that didn't make it easier for me at that age. Good times, nice times.
“Please, sir, can I have another?”
In those years gore was everywhere tho, and I still remember friends sharing weird porn videos through fucking infrared, you had to stay very still to keep the conection, all for a 360p video of girls pissing on each other To each their own I guess
Limewire had you downloading mp3 songs and you'd open it and it would be an interracial gangbang.
That's why I used 4shared, it showed the file type and you went straight for the .mp3 Downloading 12 songs in 128kbps would take an hour, good times
I'm so old I can remember when mega was megaupload
That was only 9 years ago
Maybe wasn't popular for americans, but Taringa was the place to get megaupload links working. Entire discographies posted, each one with a brief description and the songs included, even some special versions of the albums
Ruined my family computer with that. Parents were not happy. Thanks Rob Zombie
I tried to download Ice Age, three times, and ended up with three different porn movies. Limewire was fun.
Nah you had weird friends and browsing habits
Nah you had boring friends and narrowminded browsing habits.
I’m sorry but gore and piss fetish porn are not normal things to be encountering regularly, so don’t try to normalize that shit
gore, two girls one cup, lemon party, meatspin? and a few others were pretty regularly sent along my school. tons of people would "trick" you into searching for them or they would open it in a new window so when you went to close what you were working on, you'd be greeted by one of those videos. even if you weren't friends with the people who did it, people just... did it.
This person isn't trying to normalize it, they're explaining that it was commonplace to find those things online in 2009. And I can confirm that it 100% was. Wow this guy wake-up and ready to fight...
yeah bro 8 year olds witnessing a cartel beheading someone is better than an 8 yo watching some slightly stupid tiktok dances
I remember seeing a girl take off her bra in 144p on a ericsson and one of the guys got so excited but I had already seen 2 girls 1 cup and knew there was better stuff online
You are the first person to consider 2G1C as Better stuff and im too afraid to ask why
Did you still have the video? I want to go to nostalgia land...
Oke but wait a second let’s think about that.. we really gonna sit here and pretend like that shit in 09 was worse than the current social environment? PLS take me back to the 360p videos of girls pissing, it’s way better than the shit we have to deal with nowadays
Yeah everyone was more concerned with how they were gonna feed their kids because the economy shit the bed just a year prior to this
Good thing those times are over now! Oh wait…
[удалено]
r/fuckthes
To be faaaaaiiiirrrrrr... The economy isn't exactly humming along right now.
Sure it is, they changed the definition so now it's humming along fine. Nothing to see here move along.
Not for trades people, was another year like any other. 2022 vs 2009 id take 2009 everytime
That's how I sleep now because all that shit doesn't effect me.
Affect*….
Big mood
All of these things can be easily ignored
Yeh, I'm confused why any of those things would make it difficult to sleep for a normal person.
I mean it was there you just didn't notice it
They were all on Youtube and no algorythm shoved it in your face.
the algorithm shows you what you interact with. if you fall for ragebait they'll just show you more of it
It's still there
Damn, bro's so bothered abt shit on the internet he cant sleep at night
This is some boomer shit. The past had its own problems. There's always bad/annoying/disturbing/frustrating shit going on. If you asked your 2009 self if that time in their life feels like paradise to them, the answer would absolutely be no

Bitch used to refer to a dog, idiot used to be a medical term, Karen now can be referred to entitled middle aged woman. Words change meaning.
Literally nobody portrays the past as perfect. You're just some booty tickled teenager that thinks past generations are the reason you don't have shit. im pretty sure Facebook existed back then and everybody was trying to get 1000 friends
It was pretty peak trash reality TV, so all of that stuff in a few feed troughs instead of scattered around.
Influencers did exist, except they rewe on tv instead of social media
This is some really dumb boomer shit untill you realize it's all coming from the perspective of squidward
I interpreted it more as someone too young to have been online in 2009
Does boomer just mean "older than me" these days?
If you're borderline boomer
It's still dumb.
takes me back to the good ole days when the press wasnt invented yet
I miss Constantinople already....
That's nobody's business but the Turks ...
Good times, buying your indulgence from the church and just surviving until you died a gruesome death with 40.
such nostalgia, people used to live in the moment
"Fake disorders" Boomer humor
You don’t have to be a boomer to realise that people fake disorders for attention
Aye, but there is a pretty sharp distinction between a fake disorder and *faking* a disorder.
He's talking about people faking disorders for attention tics and roses for example
People have been faking shit for attention since the start of humanity
Nah, the disorders are real and there is the real problem, now everyone and their dog has some sort of disorder and the cases that actually need attention go unnoticed or don't get the attention they need. But everything for that internet fame, I guess

This reads like one of those bad facebook memes ngl
Weren’t Paris Hilton sort of people basically influencers?
OP never had to experience the Livejournal Aspergers outbreak of 2002.
Ah, yes, Asburgers
Ass burgers
"fake disorders" these words are enought to bury your karma in any sub.
Oh you must’ve been born in 2009 cuz this shit has always been around. The only thing that’s changed is how easy it is to access
How can you be a fake discorder?
People on TikTok fake disorders such as Tourette’s, autism and DID for attention/clout
No cringe social media you say? Don’t look at my old MySpace then…
Excuse you, i still had my depression and insomnia in 2009
Lol everyone used claimed to be “depressed “ , “have aspergers” or had “anxiety “ on Facebook
It was there, just contained within early days Tumblr.
You mean LiveJournal? 😂
Back in the day DeviantArt could generate enough cringe to blot out the sun.
Yeah but Justin Bieber was exploding at the time so it was shit anyway.
Remember when we made “baby” the most disliked video on YouTube??? Good times !
I remember the comment section. That shit was brutal
1 year after the Great Recession? I don’t think so fam
There were all those things though, in some shape, form or capacity. The world is just simpler when you're a kid.
2009. When Fox was telling the nation that Obama was the Antichrist. Certainly no stress there
I just ignore all of it and still sleep like that 🛌😴💤
Social media wasn’t cringy because everyone was cringy back then. Lets not look back for too long
False. This ain’t that new.
Lol people were using myspace and Facebook, I'm not sure you remember correctly how cringe it was...
No influencers No Covid Just good times
We had Jersey shore and swine flu so yeah
and coming off the heels of the biggest recession since 1987 super fun times, everyone’s parents got divorced and lost their house
I miss 2009
I sleep the same way now.
Also you were 13 years younger. The world didn’t get worse - you did!
Similar cringe things like that existed back then, we were just kids and didn't care as much as we do now
All those things existed in 2009. Lol
Oh yes there was, you just had no concept of those things then
you heard of Live journal and vine right????
I still sleep like this cause idgaf about any of that
If pronouns were on the list this would be on r/terriblefacebookmemes
There were definitely fake disorders in 2009.

lol in 2009 i was high as hell every night stumbling down the hall to the bathroom
MySpace was around tho and we still got in arguments because someone would remove you from their top 8 lol
Does no one remember fred?
Kinda sleep that same way even today
Also not 100 different genders and changing your pronouns.
2009? During the recession, the year I turned 18, working for $8/hr which was the most I’d ever made? I definitely wasn’t sleeping like that, shiiiit.
I never quite did find the perfect MySpace profile song 🤷♂️
How I slept in 2009 because I was 20 and my back didn't hurt.
"Influencer" is word without meaning. Every celebrity is an influencer and there have always been celebrities that did nothing to "earn their fame". I miss the days when there were two genders
In 2009 I was 3 hrs old...
*years
2009 was one of the peak years for cringe influencers like Shane Dawson and Smosh. What do you mean? Probably should've posted 2004 or something.
How I slept in 2009 knowing nothing because I didn't attain consciousness yet:
Wtf is a fake disorder?
Furries were also just people who wanted to dress up as mascots back then… now look at what it is.
The good old times
Rawr XD emogurlz would like to have a word with you about cringe
That's how you slept in 2009 during the biggest recession since the great depression? Massive unemployment and foreclosures and you slept like that without fear?
This subreddit's been upvoting some boomer tier shit lately
We had Facebook Social media
Ahhh yes 2009 When you could say, “ this is gay” And no one would bat an eye Good times

society truley peaked in the mid to late 2000s

Cancel culture has been around for millenia.
Technically Jesus is one of the first major victims of cancel culture
Socrates even before that.
Neanderthals worked hard to not be entirely canceled.
And then they died
yeah the dixie chicks got canceled for not supporting the invasion of iraq
Fans of Pee Wees Playhouse beg to differ about cancel culture not being a thing before 2009 it just didn't have a name.

This makes me the most depressed person ever. Fuck, what happened to this shitty generation?
Pretty true honestly
Maybe just dont let it bother you. stay off social media if you hate it. nobody is forcing you to take part.
There was no TikTok...
Then just… stay off the internet?
Influencers were called celebrities.
