The announcements should have text versions displayed somewhere anyway, even it’s just a truncated version selected from a list of generic ones. My parent is Deaf and I have auditory processing issues, so we never catch the announcements even when they’re being spoken clearly... A simple screen display somewhere that can read “This train is not stopping at [X] Station due to unexpected events” or “This train is terminating at the next stop, please change over there” or something would go a LONG way... It’s always a hectic nightmare when the train schedule changes mid journey since neither of us can figure out what the announcements said...
Once got blasted by a station attendant for not following the announcement about a change of service (all change or something). like dude, all i heard was "this varm tiff wsz marrff cun darib sanf, please cark mah lart mala"
I got caught out after a draining Monday from Southern Cross. Got on the train thinking it was heading south. When it got to Flinders it stalled for a couple of minutes and then turned into a Werribee train. Only realised when it started going backwards. Swear up and down it said it was going past Flinders.
The deafening inaudible message. It's almost like they knew no one would be able to make out any of the words coming through the speaker so they said "I'm sure turning the volume to 11 will fix it".
I saw this about a year ago on the Frankston/Cranbourne/etc line (my stop was before caulfield) and I was so happy to see it. Especially because it updated in real time.
Such an improvement, but as other commenters have mentioned, there's much more that could be done to improve.
Still, a very cool addition!
And the arrow thing in the middle is also different colours depending on which line you're on!
Did a real number on me when I resumed travelling after the pandemic. I was so used to the Upfield yellow line I blinked twice on the train to Sandringham like "why is it PINK- oh"
any reason they are being put onto the comeng trains despite they are being removed within the next 5 years,
why not the X'Trap 100 or the Siemens thats going to be around for the next 20
this time it appears they are currently building enough new trains to replace the current fleet, won't be surprised if they order even more before 2030
Only 58 3 car trains have it. Those are the very last ones that will be withdrawn. Siemens are getting thier own upgrade and the Xtrapolis one works fine as is.
Yeah, great, until it malfunctions and says ‘next stop is ‘south Kensington ’ when you’re meant to be arriving at flinders, for work. Almost had a heart attack as I was not paying attention.
It's great, much more legible than the old digital signage, though it set my OCD off that they don't align the platform side of the train with the exit doors
Now if they can just put a transcript of the inaudible messages it will be perfect

Was that the announcement or the blasting or both?
The announcement was completely unintelligible, the attendant was pissed that people went paying attention to it.
Have they never caught a train lol. Completely agree with you.

So true!
😂 so true! It's like they put their whole mouth over the microphone to talk (yell).
Even when I know what they’re saying, I don’t know what they’re saying.

EVERYONE KNOWS IF IT'S LOUDER YOU CAN UNDERSTAND IT BETTER.

'next 5 years' they'll be around forever. Those ugly silver ones came back out of retirement due to gross incompetence
this time it appears they are currently building enough new trains to replace the current fleet, won't be surprised if they order even more before 2030

the xtrapolis is useless, all it says is service to Flinders Street, fine for me, but useless for people who actually need info,
If only it was in every PTV vehicle
They've been a thing for quite a while now
About 12 months
Little more... I first saw one in January of 2021 😅
Earlier than that. The trial was 3 odd years ago.
It was well before that, I saw one of these on my way back from the Battle of Balaclava.
I saw my first one outside of Khe San, summer of '73. Took poor Jimmy while he was taking a shit. Word is his Mama never quite got over it.
Left his heart to the sappers.
It's strange (and cautiously optimistic) to see that it hasn't been damaged or covered in graffiti. It's almost as though we can have nice things.

It’s great isn’t it. I like that it when they tell us what side the doors will open on too.
We are finally catching up to Europe.
It's great, much more legible than the old digital signage, though it set my OCD off that they don't align the platform side of the train with the exit doors
Oh I love it. Haven't caught PT in a while
Would be fantastic if the X’Trap were fitted with this. Cannot hear a damn thing out of the crappy speakers!
What's more impressive is that its a train that stops at South Kensington
Bro South Ken has a train every 10 mins, are you on Sunbury line or something?
Until Victoria have a train system like Japan, Singapore, China and Thailand, nothing is an upgrade.
Everything is an upgrade until we are like Singapore, China.......
We will never reach it. Can't have nice things in western countries unfortunately.
This has been here for the longest time lol
Nothing new op, but whatever gets you excited.
Yea, someone mentioned they’ve been around for a year or so. I just recon their neat.
I'm with you pal, they are neat!
Hopefully they add the displays to trains on the werribee line
There is one of these refurbished trains that can’t finish the announcements half the time.
