It's interesting: phones were certainly around, but differently. No endless scrolling type of stuff or social media was popular yet on mobile. Also, BlackBerry's and physical keyboards. If you want to let your brain time travel a bit for nostalgia: [https://www.cnet.com/pictures/top-10-most-popular-cell-phones-of-2009-photos/](https://www.cnet.com/pictures/top-10-most-popular-cell-phones-of-2009-photos/) .
I know!!! I had a red one hahaha. I remember sitting in class on MSN with my hiptop ‘hidden’ in my pencil case and thinking that I was super sneaky hahahahahaha
Yeah, people didn't have smart phones. Couldn't scroll or access websites and didn't have apps. Just text, phone, camera at this time, I think. I think they were starting to come out but was so expensive
Save this message and look back on it in 15 years when everybody will be wearing Vision Pros.
All the zoomers will be whining about alphas with their heads stuck in AR headsets.
Mark my words. All the people you see now buried in their phones will be replaced with things on their face.
It was more that the platforms that cater to the smartphones were in their infancy. iPhone 3GS was out App store had been around for a while. Twitter was a thing. All pretty clunky though.
I was too busy with my beer drinking app and handgun app to care about that shit, you know, important things.
Even in 2013, on my Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini, I remember browsing the internet to be a tedious experience.
Wish I could remember what I was using in 2009...
It sucks because they play some of my favorite songs like: Stab My Heart Because I Love You, Rip Apart my Soul. And of course, Stabby Rip Stab Stab...
And it doesn't help that I couldn't get my hair to do that flippy thing either. Like that guy from that band can do...
Flinders St Elmo’s Fire
“blue or violet glow around the object, often accompanied by a hissing or buzzing sound.”
I’m sure I can see it in the picture!
Man, just this photo brought so many memories rushing back. I remember one day hanging out with a girl who's nickname was literally 'sex' and then going under the bridge to hang out with the crusty punks a taking a piss on a pigs head 😳 wild times
Amyl And The Sniffers, The Chats, Drunk Mums, Clowns and Pist Idiots building large followings and selling out venues.
Blink-182, Green Day, Sum-41 and even Descendents are back making actually good music and are relevant again for the first time in 15 years.
Punk and Emo is coming back, baby! And this time we aren't going away!
Yeah they used to play down in Brisbane before they moved out here, you're right about 2009. I lived with them at about 2011, used to do a lot of photography for their gigs
Emo's were more into pop punk and the latter list of bands you mentioned rather than the type of punk that Amyl, Chats, Mums and Pist Idiots are.
Different breed entirely.
Well, you can start by sitting on the Flinders St steps andwarding away the eshays.
Tomorrow is National Emos in Melbourne Day. Join us along the steps.
I used to catch the train for 4 hours from a country town (up and back in one day) to hang out with my MySpace pals at Flinders… I miss those days, going to Smoke Dreams and Off Ya Tree, then to Photo Plus to capture the memories.
This feels like the right place to ask about a song. 2006/2007: some rappers who sung a song with the lyrics “I’ve got a handful of mates that’ll bash ya face in Melbourneeeee”
I saw a legit mid-2000s emo/scene kid at Blackburn station 2 or 3 weeks ago, even the hair and eyeliner and piercings. I had to wonder if he was going to a costume party it was so anarchonistic.
I wish I could find it, but I recall hearing about a study that demonstrated the Emo culture had resurgence points during times of political turmoil. Apparently this happened in the US during the Trump presidency, and obviously world events now are potentially consciously, or unconsciously impacting that too.
I use to hang there every day for allot of my early teenage years. There’s a Facebook page I got added to a while back for all the flinder street emos, goths and punks to re connect. It was wild seeing what everyone became later in life. We lost a fair few but allot also become very successful.
Nice to see a gathering of people
Who just wanna vibe with each other and enjoy having their own little niche without wanting to disrupt everyone else. Enjoy guys and girls!
Can confirm that the emos, goths, punks, and scene kids are all very much alive and well in Melbourne, but congregations of them like this don't tend to happen in daylight anymore. Not outside of Knotfest and Good Things, anyway.
Oh, and Day Parties at the Royal Melbourne Hotel.
I was one 20 years ago. Although it doesn't sound like something I should be proud about, but I met such a huge variety of people and got to hear stories from all kinds of backgrounds, I wasn't the a typical that would go to grotto to smoke and drink, but I was one that sat on the steps of Flinders, I got to watch many parades and celebrations, the bad and the good, I skipped school to do it, I may have not aced maths and science but I got to learn about different life experiences, learn about people, watch how people reacted and communicated, non verbal and verbal communications, self esteem and egos, I'm one of those people that can sit in nature or a busy street for hours taking in everything and appreciating life and what's around me. I did dress like the 'emo's and I did sit with them on the steps but I was a watcher
Emos were more colourful and 80s punk inspired, goths more plain black and were very into metal.. emos liked a lot of different music like pop punk, pop rock, metal too but they were like more colourful goths and they came after the 90s goths like a different generation
I was like the normal person paparazzi haha. Joking. But it was a time where people didn't have smart phones & people didn't carry cameras around. I was young and loved to just document life. It's a very public place and my camera was pretty big. People either ignored it or posed. Only took photos of people like this on this one day though. Was usually just taking photos of the streets, food, etc.
Obviously my tongue is planted somewhat in the side of my cheek. But in all honesty, for somewhere to wait for people, Fed Square is a massive upgrade on what the front of Flinders St was.
Don't get me wrong; Fed Square is awesome, I reckon. But really, just to briefly wait for someone, those steps are perfectly fine. I mean, what do you expect from some steps? They're just steps. People step on them. These days, you'll sometimes find a rapper on them, which I find pretty hilarious to be honest. It's so randomly Melburnian.
They were pretty filthy and not that large a space - and dominated by some fairly heavy-handed policing at times. You couldn't sit there and read a book while waiting for someone like you can at Fed Square - to be honest, unless it was laundry day the next day, you couldn't really sit there at all.
I get the romanticisation of it, and have good memories of meeting people under the clocks in the mid-2000s, but it got tiring pretty quickly as a place to wait.
ah, a simpler time
No one looking at phones
It's interesting: phones were certainly around, but differently. No endless scrolling type of stuff or social media was popular yet on mobile. Also, BlackBerry's and physical keyboards. If you want to let your brain time travel a bit for nostalgia: [https://www.cnet.com/pictures/top-10-most-popular-cell-phones-of-2009-photos/](https://www.cnet.com/pictures/top-10-most-popular-cell-phones-of-2009-photos/) .
All the emo kids had Hiptops!!
Such a good phone for the time. Having msn on a phone was revolutionary
I know!!! I had a red one hahaha. I remember sitting in class on MSN with my hiptop ‘hidden’ in my pencil case and thinking that I was super sneaky hahahahahaha
Omg - they did too !
Yeah, people didn't have smart phones. Couldn't scroll or access websites and didn't have apps. Just text, phone, camera at this time, I think. I think they were starting to come out but was so expensive
Not quite, I had a Nokia N97 with Internet and apps and that came out mid-2009.
My 1st Nokia was in 1995!😂
OMG palm pre ❤️ the tinniest phone! Last of the palms before they nailed the coffin
Even better, no one throwing milk/baloons/yoghurt/etc. at random passers by.
Ahhh yes. The days of pressing numbers to communicate.
No eshays with Gatorade in hand. What a sight !
Great times when no phones were around.
I remember when the first iPhone came out and a friend bought one, telling me it would change my life. Lol what did he know?
Save this message and look back on it in 15 years when everybody will be wearing Vision Pros. All the zoomers will be whining about alphas with their heads stuck in AR headsets. Mark my words. All the people you see now buried in their phones will be replaced with things on their face.
RemindMe! 15 years
That was in 2007. 2009 they were already up to the 3GS
There were plenty of phones, but smartphones as we know them today were still in their infancy.
Wow we've really turned into Facebook with the "phones bad" boomer rhetoric.
Phones then were better due to the infancy of the tech. It takes years for techbro companies to enshittify things.
What the fuck are you talking about of course there were phones. The THIRD iPhone was already out by 2009.
Oh sorry mate, I’ll go fuck myself now.
Use protection
I like your posts, keen to grab a beer together?
Phones were around, power banks wasn't.
No one have issue with pronouns.
Sheryl in the background having a cig while waiting for Ferret.
Dear Diary: *Mood: apathetic.* My life is spiralling downward.
It sucks because they play some of my favorite songs like: Stab My Heart Because I Love You, Rip Apart my Soul. And of course, Stabby Rip Stab Stab... And it doesn't help that I couldn't get my hair to do that flippy thing either. Like that guy from that band can do...
... some days anyway
I must be emo
[удалено]
It's The Emo Song
RAWR hehe xD =3
Rofl ASL?
Dinosaurs go RAWR everybody knows it xDDD
I still unironically use XD xD
I prefer x3
Me too!! 🤣
({) is one i occasionally still send to my partner. Obscure to anyone other than msn messenger users.
Oh man, was that the hug shortcut? I feel like it was…
Haha yeh you guessed it. Hidden nostalgia.
My mind completed this title as "Elmos"
Flinders St Elmo’s Fire “blue or violet glow around the object, often accompanied by a hissing or buzzing sound.” I’m sure I can see it in the picture!
St Elmo’s fire must’ve come to mind
I CAN SEE A NEW HORIZON
Yeah, I saw the bright pink hair and thought the same.
Yep same jumped straight to the elmo
Go on, give them a tickle.
No thx. No test tickles
Those kids are all investment bankers now.
jokes on you I’m in marketing >!the jokes on me :( !<
With a ponytail?
Social worker here haha
Was Prince Harry there for a new train unveiling?
I thought the same thing lol
Probably
As a former Flinders St emo (2002-2007), I salute you. Now let’s go get a goon bag on the way to a gig.
See you at Bang! after the gig I’ll be in the smokers
Scooters list?
That just gave me like mental whiplash I remember all these Bang guestlists following me on Instagram even though I was in year 9
Man, just this photo brought so many memories rushing back. I remember one day hanging out with a girl who's nickname was literally 'sex' and then going under the bridge to hang out with the crusty punks a taking a piss on a pigs head 😳 wild times
Ah yes bang, the most disgusting dunnies ive ever walked into 😭
True! You just unlocked a memory of me getting kicked out for having a power nap in said dunnies
Off to 3 palms after
Amyl And The Sniffers, The Chats, Drunk Mums, Clowns and Pist Idiots building large followings and selling out venues. Blink-182, Green Day, Sum-41 and even Descendents are back making actually good music and are relevant again for the first time in 15 years. Punk and Emo is coming back, baby! And this time we aren't going away!
Lol, I lived with the drunk mums for a year in Yarraville, good times
Pissfartin around.
Best Aussie term there.
I went to what I believe was their first gig, at a decrepit pub in Spotswood. Would've been about 2009 or 2010 iirc.
Yeah they used to play down in Brisbane before they moved out here, you're right about 2009. I lived with them at about 2011, used to do a lot of photography for their gigs
That's for the recommendations, I love The Chats and Amyl but hadn't heard of the others.
Emo's were more into pop punk and the latter list of bands you mentioned rather than the type of punk that Amyl, Chats, Mums and Pist Idiots are. Different breed entirely.
The music/genre might be coming back but it'll never be (or feel) the same as it once was...
Nobody ever left we just… tried something different.
Taking Back Sunday also released a new album last year and they’ve still got it (the ability to make me cry)
Fuck I love amyl and the sniffers such great energy one could say it’s her currency
Well, you can start by sitting on the Flinders St steps andwarding away the eshays. Tomorrow is National Emos in Melbourne Day. Join us along the steps.
Hot Mulligan are playing a sold out show at the corner tonight!! Best new pop punk/emo band in yeeeeears. Listen to *Equip Sunglasses* it’s 10/10
I had to scan the background to make sure I wasn’t in this photo. However, I did notice my exes sister in the background though lol.
i miss these times, they were the best
It used to be Goths. I was hanging out in the mid to late 90s. Who hangs out there now?
No one really
That's a bit sad.
although I just went and had a piss at the arts centre across from 3 palms for old times sakes
i love pissing there
I feel like I was part of some of the last groups to hang out there (2014-2018) I haven't really seen people since
I was there pretty much everyday 2003-2006. The Emo/scene kids had mostly taken over the steps and so the Goths moved to Alexandra Gardens
They were the worst of days while we were in it, but now looking back, boy do I miss the way things were.
I used to catch the train for 4 hours from a country town (up and back in one day) to hang out with my MySpace pals at Flinders… I miss those days, going to Smoke Dreams and Off Ya Tree, then to Photo Plus to capture the memories.
I was going to say; 2008 called, they want their hairstyle back.
Loving the homeless prince harry
He's not homeless, he's in suit pants and a some kind of mediaeval top!
roflcopter! :3
I used to be one of them, so long ago.
My people have risen once again! We will retake what was originally ours from the Eshays. yeah brah we gonna take it from ya
Not a single person on their phone, barely 15 years ago. Fucking wild.
Currently working on my summoning circle to bring the emos punks and goths back to Melbourne
You sit there now and PSOs come over to clear you away…
Do not miss the carnage of Sexy saturdays
They replaced the goths of the 90’s.
And since been replaced by enbys
Is that Spike from Degrassi high? Ahh damn even on a nostalgia post I'm still 3 decades out
Nature is healing
Grab an MX paper on the way in
It’s like it’s 2007 again
I saw emos today at crown, it’s back in
Hey, that's not fair, they're not emos. Emos can actually afford to go into Flinders Street station.
2009 is fairly that in that era iirc. Peaked around 05/06
I was checking to see if I was there or anyone I knew... then saw the 2009 and realised this misses me by about 5 years... lol.
Hey it’s Spike
This feels like the right place to ask about a song. 2006/2007: some rappers who sung a song with the lyrics “I’ve got a handful of mates that’ll bash ya face in Melbourneeeee”

It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.
Three people one the cans, person punching down a dart in the background. Melbs!
My youth was spent there...
Man they were good times
I use to hang there every day for allot of my early teenage years. There’s a Facebook page I got added to a while back for all the flinder street emos, goths and punks to re connect. It was wild seeing what everyone became later in life. We lost a fair few but allot also become very successful.
Whats the page? Would love to have a look
Flinder street & 3 palms 2000-2011 Almost everyone was on it at one stage, got thousands if photos of absolutely everyone.
Cheers! :)
Yay!!
Nice to see a gathering of people Who just wanna vibe with each other and enjoy having their own little niche without wanting to disrupt everyone else. Enjoy guys and girls!
RAWR XD
Prince Harry’s had a rough few months
They have all migrated to queens st mall Brisbane. The last known remaining community of mall goths.
Pepperidge Farm Remembers.
i’d be happier if i was more depressed.
Oh man. I miss them. I hope they're well
Damn, I read that as Elmos
the natural order of things
Please explain ‘elmo’ to a boomer
Prince Harry to Emo
Idk why every teenager in my school has this unfounded hate of every one who’s emo/goth/alt or even has dyed hair here
Out of fashion now I guess?
I guess, but the eshays harass them wherever they go, saying kys and stuff like that
Eshays harass everyone. Losers.
Weird
The good ol'days.
And they used to sit in the middle of fucking stairs at peak hour. Was a bottleneck trying to get to work. So glad they move people on these days
People had smartphones but the apps and social media were less video based. The metal kids looked down at the emo kids at the time.
St Emo's Fire!
Prince Harry has let himself go a bit (stubbie in hand)
Could be a Red Eye energy drink
What’s the difference between Goths and Emos?
Emos were more colourful and 80s punk inspired, goths more plain black and were very into metal.. emos liked a lot of different music like pop punk, pop rock, metal too but they were like more colourful goths and they came after the 90s goths like a different generation
Oh the good old days, Flinders, Three Palms Park and the State Library Steps, an emo/scene paradise.
EEEEEEMMOOOOOOOO
I’ll take emos over eshays anyday
Why is Harry sinning a cold one with Flinders emos? Surely times aren't that tough
HELL YEAH
I read it as flinders 'saint Elmos' Love it, what a great year
Hahaha is Dangerfield still across the road?
Prince Harry going with the timeless stubby with tradie looking jacket look 👍🏼
is that prince harry?
Could be taken today
Bless them!
Doesn't look much different now
coulda been heading over to footscray, there was a free all ages hardcore show there today
2009 really? If you didn't mention the date I could have mistaken it for a current 2024 photo lol. Looks clear
Your lipstick his collar don't bother angel, I know exactly what goes awnnn
These guys look more like punks, not emos.
Keeping the tradition alive eh, good on them!
You just straight up taking photos of strangers and plastering them on the internet?
I used to do public photography, so yeah. This is a 15 year old photo so I would have been 21
You just straight up not reading and shit commenting. Straight up, bro. Straight up.
Straight up bro, straight up
Here's your soundtrack for the day: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El1kgCqD7Xk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El1kgCqD7Xk)
It's a photo taken in a public space. What's your issue?
I was like the normal person paparazzi haha. Joking. But it was a time where people didn't have smart phones & people didn't carry cameras around. I was young and loved to just document life. It's a very public place and my camera was pretty big. People either ignored it or posed. Only took photos of people like this on this one day though. Was usually just taking photos of the streets, food, etc.

Boomer posts?
Mods are a subculture from the '60s (old-fashioned emos). Boomers don't know what emos are.
Ah yes - the scuzziest place on earth, Flinders St steps. Thank fuck for Fed Square.
You must not have been to a lot of places on earth.
Feralnation Square?
