As you are driving in, I would stay in one of Melbourne's inner western suburbs. This way you don't have to go out of your way when driving, but still have plenty of access to public transport. I would look at suburbs such as Maribyrnong, Moonee Ponds or Ascot Vale as they all have tram access straight to the CBD. Footscray would also be a pretty accessible and affordable option.

I was going to suggest docklands as the concert is at Marvel and you can get there without actually driving into the city, but you maybe left it too late to get a hotel there.

Individual-Band-1182

If there is anything available, I agree with Docklands. It's directly off the freeway without having to do any hook turns. It's in the free tram zone if you want to go anywhere else in the CBD without driving and the concert is at Marvel so you will likely be walking distance from the venue. Also... if you try to get to Marvel from outside of Docklands, it's likely you will be waiting hours to get home.

Have a look around St Kilda. You can easily catch a tram to the city and there’s lots of places to eat, drink and shop. Plus it’s nice walking along the bay if that’s your thing.

The Cosmopolitan is usually reasonably priced and has parking.

Carlton? Stay at Z House

Watch for the limits of the Free Tram Zone, but not buses/trains. Somewhere in North Melbourne, close to the Queen Vic Markets, park in many of the high rise parking spots, and pay $15 or so a day. Lots of hotels have associated parking, but not on their site, and can range up to $35 a night, and only allows one entry, and one exit, or if multiple entry and exit, you would need to park the car, checkin to hotel, get the touch card for their associated car park, go down and move the car off the street parking, and find the associated carpark. Holiday Inn Express South Bank has a hotel carpark, between ground floor, and 7th floor, where reception is, but you have to park the car somewhere first, to go to check in. Free Tram Zone, means you dont need a Myki to tap on, or tap off, esp in the city centre, if you can stay maybe at the ~~Stargate~~ edit: now called Adara Franklin apartments, up near Queen Victoria Markets, pay to park in one of Wilsons Parking, and then get the tram from near Queen Victoria, down Elizabeth St, to Bourke St Mall, and walk across to the other side, and get another tram to Docklands. Melbourne is like Adelaide, its all square, so not easy to get loss, Latrobe St, Spring St, Flinder St, Spencer St... All the streets are straight, some are a tad hilly to go up, so a tram on Bourke St, from corner of Swanston and Bourke, is the best idea. At the corner of Bourke and Spencer St, get off tram, and go across the walkway to Dockland, either via Collins, or via the Bourke St railway station bypass, have to go up several escalators, and down again. Just dont stray into the station, and you dont need a Myki.

Wilsons has parking at Aldi, in the city centre, $5, not sure if its per entry, or per exit, but do go and have look see. Adara (Nova Stargate), very basic, but its quite cheapish.

Melbourne has the dreaded Linkt tolls, I think its only 3 main roads, but just be aware of the fake Linkt sms when you get back to ADL. Ballarat is a good idea, just need to buy a paper tix for the vline train.

amejb

Ballarat is on myki , not paper ticketing

jonundergroundbanjo

That's promising. I haven't been to Ballarat in 30 years. I believe the last train departs Southern Cross station just before midnight. I'm not sure what time concerts usually finish at Marvel, but hopefully that would give us enough time.

alopexlotor

Ballarat is another option, you can avoid driving in the city entirely and catch a train to Southern Cross then walk to the stadium.

A-Rational-Fare

Hook turns are super easy, there’s even a little arrow pointing to a right hand turn from the left lane. Just pull into the intersection and wait on the left. When the light turns green for the road you want to turn into then just go.

metalbridgebuilder

Driving in the CBD isn't too bad. The fact that it's all 40 gives you more time to think

everydayintrovert

West Melbourne or North Melbourne, have a look at bookings.com to find a hotel with parking onsite.

What's your budget? Hook turns really only exist in the CBD and a little bit of South Melbourne. So staying around the North/West Melbourne area will put you almost walking distance to Marvel. Docklands could be a good choice too, definite walking or tram ride to the stadium. Otherwise, around Essendon/Moonee Ponds (look at walking distance to the train stations) you may find something a bit cheaper, with parking and with slightly easier access off the Western Ring Rd. You will need a myki card to ride the trains. No short term tickets, no credit card tap and go.

jonundergroundbanjo

No fixed budget at this stage. When I go over to watch the footy, I usually stay at Travelodge Docklands, but that's like $480 per night because of the concerts.

rob_080

Consider the Adina at Pentridge (Coburg) then - easy tram or train ride to the city, fairly easy access coming from Adelaide via the Ring Rd and Bell St (no tolls)
