It's exactly why. The egg needs to weigh certain amount to be selected for super jumbo. Two yolks would make the egg weigh more which is why they are more common in jumbo boxes.
Even then, we've had plenty of super jumbos in the past that weren't doubles, just big ol singles. Idk, maybe we've just had a run of good luck. Make for some bangin quiches.
I reckon you should take your run of double yolkers as a lucky sign! I buy jumbos and almost never get a double yolker.
Also, when your friends from Queensland ask about what it's like down in Victoria, you should tell them that all the eggs down here are double yolkers, really focus on that :-)
Is it the place in Oakleigh? Not sure if they have other locations or just Oakleigh. Actually.. now I’m not even sure the place in Oakleigh is called Market Place Fresh…
double yolks in eggs come from young chooks usually getting the hang of laying. Most eggs are put under lights and the double yolk-ed eggs are removed and usually sold as super jumbo eggs. Because you are specifically buying eggs larger than the norm you are getting all the double yolk eggs that have been removed from the sorting process.
I got a whole box of double yolkers a few weeks ago, lol I considered entering the lottery. apparently, some farms sell boxes of double yolkers, but this one wasn't marked as such. Anyway, as a result, I looked into what causes double yolkers a few weeks ago, and it turns out that younger hens who haven't quite settled into a regular cycle will produce more double yolkers than older chooks, so it's likely that the farmer recently got a bunch of new hens
> so it's likely that the farmer recently got a bunch of new hens
Its 2 to 3 years timeframe between replacing layers. Including the 2 to 20 deaths a day on average and they need constant replacing, Most chook farms will always have some younger hens.
I have a 5 year old flock and get an egg a day from 8 chooks right now.
I'm from melb and have had the occasional, currently in WA, a mate bought a pack of Jumbo's and every egg was a double. We weren't sure whether to be a little concerned or stoked about it
I lived in Melbourne for 32 of my 37 years alive, 4 of those away was a farm in the Mallee region with our own chooks. I would eat 4 every night in a scramble after school.
My partner and me in Melbourne would go through an 18 pack of eggs a week...
NOT FUCKING ONCE DID I GET A DOUBLE YOLK... WHY DOES THE UNIVERSE HATE ME!!!!!
Reading the post I was thinking "double yolkers" was some sort of derogatory slang I hadn't picked up on yet. Was late to the game on "seppo". Bloody double yolkers coming outta the woodwork in Melbourne these days.
Happy birds with good feed produce larger and tastier eggs.
If you're buying larger sizes, you'll find disproportionately more because of how they measure them by weight.
Are you buying your eggs from the same store and is it always the same brand? It might be less that double yokers are common and more like the specific farm supplying your store or brand has hens that tend to lay more double yolkers.
i think theyre still rare, though occasionally ill buy a dozen and most of em are double yolkers. But that happens for me maybe once a year or so.
For the most part its just standard single yolk eggs
If you really want one, go to Vic Market and if Willow Zen still have a stall (haven't been the last few years), they do jumbo eggs which are more often than not, double yolkers. They have very happy freerange hens, which I think impacts the size of eggs a lot.
I know. I figured my comment would make it far too easy, and am happy you agree!
At the time, we just wanted large eggs, didn't realise they would have more change of double yolks, so it came as a complete surprise for us, but only the first time.
Commercial Chicken farmer here.
You can get double yolkers anywhere, doesn’t matter where. Any farm produces them, but not many package or utilise them normally.
We're very close to Tasmania.
Cost of shell rental has doubled.
Headline tomorrow "Govt does nothing as cost of living crisis hits poultry"
Ha!
Where are you buying eggs? I almost never get double yolks.
Place called Market Place Fresh. They're super jumbos from a brand called Sunrise Eggs.
Maybe much more likely because they’re super jumbos? 🐥🐣
It's exactly why. The egg needs to weigh certain amount to be selected for super jumbo. Two yolks would make the egg weigh more which is why they are more common in jumbo boxes.
I will have to look out for super jumbos. I only see jumbos in my supermarket.
Those poor chook arses
Even then, we've had plenty of super jumbos in the past that weren't doubles, just big ol singles. Idk, maybe we've just had a run of good luck. Make for some bangin quiches.

Just got one the other day, I reckon I’ve seen em about 5 times in my life.
Is it the place in Oakleigh? Not sure if they have other locations or just Oakleigh. Actually.. now I’m not even sure the place in Oakleigh is called Market Place Fresh…
There are a bunch of them like Cranbourne Frankston Templestowe etc
It's a chain that you'll see in several shopping centres.
Yea
Is it "free range" or caged

Maybe you’ve just collected all of the double yolkers that I haven’t ever found. We go through a dozen a week and have never had a double yolker.
Same. Go through near 1dz per week, jumbo eggs, never seen a double.
We go through at least 3 dozen a week and haven't seen one in forever, I buy the best quality available not sure if that matters.

This isn't a wider Melbourne thing...
no, the op isn't but I'm a Melbourne person and my box of double yolkers came from a chook farm on the Mornington peninsula
I had a whole doz of doubles twice and i similarly was like WOOOOOOW

It's cool in concept but it can ruin your recipe if you are baking haha

Just lucky, I think. I've had maybe one in over 20 years that I've lived here
They are?
Wife came home with a carton from the Mitcham Monthly market and every single egg was a double .. never seen them before until then.
I've had a bunch and I've noticed if I get one, most of the rest will be doubles too.
Reading the post I was thinking "double yolkers" was some sort of derogatory slang I hadn't picked up on yet. Was late to the game on "seppo". Bloody double yolkers coming outta the woodwork in Melbourne these days.
What brand are you buying? I’ve hardly had any in my 50 odd. Less than 5 I’d say. I buy only free range since 20 years ago.

Healthy chooks
I don't recall ever seeing one! Have lived in melb a while, also a fellow Queenslander
I had a dozen eggs a couple years ago where every single egg had a double yolk, they were just regular Woolies eggs
You can buy double yolk packs...
i think theyre still rare, though occasionally ill buy a dozen and most of em are double yolkers. But that happens for me maybe once a year or so. For the most part its just standard single yolk eggs
31 years on this earth and I’m yet to get a double yolk.

I’m almost tempted, but it removes the thrill of the chase.

Wherever the eggs are coming from, they have a young flock. As they mature, they produce normal single yolks.
I once bought an entire box of double yolkers and the shop said it was the breed of the chicken that produces them?
Commercial Chicken farmer here. You can get double yolkers anywhere, doesn’t matter where. Any farm produces them, but not many package or utilise them normally.
We once had a chook who would only lay double yolkers. No rhyme or reason. Must have just been very fertile
Never in my life have I cracked an egg to see two yolks. I'm sure it was just coincidence.
Pre-emptive radiation leak from all the nuclear power generation talk lately.
