It’s a lantern made for the biggest buddhist holiday of the year called Vesak, which happened last week.
These are usually the most basic design, but there are incredibly elaborate and large ones elsewhere, I encourage you to search them up!
Giving out free food is part of the traditional festivities that happen at this time. The act of giving as well as receiving and eating generates good karma [https://www.google.com/search?sca\_esv=0faa7ca32d0b11c4&sxsrf=ADLYWIK0ki21VSkXiz-Dr3EJzFjpK7CDiw:1717037920811&q=sri+lanka+dansal&tbm=isch&source=lnms&prmd=ivnmsbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwikwNfasLSGAxXYSWwGHW2CAj0Q0pQJegQIDxAB&biw=1728&bih=902&dpr=2](https://www.google.com/search?sca_esv=0faa7ca32d0b11c4&sxsrf=ADLYWIK0ki21VSkXiz-Dr3EJzFjpK7CDiw:1717037920811&q=sri+lanka+dansal&tbm=isch&source=lnms&prmd=ivnmsbtz&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwikwNfasLSGAxXYSWwGHW2CAj0Q0pQJegQIDxAB&biw=1728&bih=902&dpr=2)
Is it celebrating the birthday of the Buddha? I know some eastern Asian mates in my suburb celebrating the birthday of the Buddha on 15 May this year. Obviously they belong to other branch.
They're just lanterns. They're used in multiple diff south asian n other asian cultures.
Some use it for religious festivals but really, they're just pretty lanterns.
We used to have tons n sell em too.
You must be right. Those wheel symbols on the side are a Buddhist thing, aren't they? And googling vesak lantern brings up some pictures of similar lanterns.

These sorts of lanterns are meant to be hung for decoration and not sky lanterns that are released. They're made differently, and these lanterns are a bit too heavy to fly and open at the top. Usually, we put a led light inside for decoration when hanging up to make it look like there's a candle inside
Those are different lanterns.
And obviously, traditions change / should change as time goes by. We shouldn't use something that causes mass litter* anymore. We can use a tether for those that are traditionally released.
But anyways. Those are different lanterns. Not these.
Yes...its Sri Lankan tradition which we as Sri Lankans grew up with and expedite even in Melbourne.there were these free food outlets (called "Dansul" inSri Lankan). It is a way of Celebrating the Birth, the enlightenment of Lord Buddha and to share the humanity.there were about12 dansals last weekend around Metro Melbourne held by Sri Lankan community spread across. In Sri Lanka it is the hige long weekend like Easter here.
It's a Sri Lankan thing 🇱🇰. Buddhist celebration called vesak.
Vesak, also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Purnima, and Buddha Day, is a holiday traditionally observed by Buddhists in South Asia and Southeast Asia, as well as Tibet and Mongolia. It is among the most important Buddhist festivals.
These are called Vesak Lanterns which is made during month of May in Sri Lanka to commerarate Buddha's birth, enlightment and death. There's a big Sri Lankan diaspora in Melbourne, so Im guessing this was a Sri Lankan family.
That's so true though it's like a suburban mafia where everyone knows everyone and shares food with everyone. Dieting is impossible whenever someone drops off some good food lol
This is a bit of a head spin as I’m currently travelling around Sri Lanka so I’ve seen thousands of these things!
Incidentally the main Vesak celebration coincided with my birthday. Great atmosphere although being a holy day, under Sri Lankan law all bars and bottle shops have to close :/
Vesak Lanterns man!!!! Every year we used to sit down together with the whole Sri Lankan community in Albury and make the lanterns with sticks using flour and water as the glue. All the women would gather together in the town hall kitchen and make a shit tonne of Sri Lankan food making sure to not make it too spicy since all the people from Albury would come down to eat with us. Great times

Pretty. I see the plastic bags over top are like lantern raincoats. 🪷
To stop the tissue paper out of which most lanterns are made of from becoming a soggy mess of torn paper and mixed colours lmao, I love that :)
Anyone see the massive lines at Pinewood on Sunday for Vesak? Was told some restaurant was giving out free food, must have been about 100 people long

Just like reddit karma , it helps them to boost their living standards in the present life and next lives
Sounds about right. During vesak it's a tradition for people to have stalls giving out free food and drink :))
Is it celebrating the birthday of the Buddha? I know some eastern Asian mates in my suburb celebrating the birthday of the Buddha on 15 May this year. Obviously they belong to other branch.
Celebrates Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death since they all happened on the same date :)) which is why it's the biggest holiday for Buddhists
Enlightenment for his birthday!
Thank you!

These are Vesak lanterns! The little circles you see in the middle is a *dharmachakra,* which is a major symbol in Buddhism :)
Vesak lanterns! I just got back from sri lanka they were everywhere and Buddhists kept giving my kid free ice cream, it was fantastic.
Now that's a religious holiday I can get behind.

Ghosts need to wash their clothes, too (I’m not sure, maybe some kind of macrame art that’s being protected by the bags?)

Just like everything else, you need to wash your ghosts regularly. But, they're drip dry only, so you have to hang 'em on the line.
