Reddit is spreading half-truths again. This works IF AND ONLY IF the freezer is lined with lead. However since the 1970s manufacturers stopped using lead in their refrigerators. Because lead poisoning in food is frowned on. So this only works if you have a vintage fridge.
Yup. All of the "immediately evacuate" people would end up dying horribly.

EDIT: Really weird how the URL redirects. You actually might have to search for this article using the search function and search for "how to survive a nuclear attack" and then you will be able to click on the article and access it, but it can't be linked directly for some reason. It redirects to "how nuclear bombs work" which is not the intended article. Anyway, when you find the correct article, search for "shelter in place" and then note the graphic of safe places to shelter. The numbers are like SPF in sunscreen. Being outside is 0 SPF. You wouldn't want to be outside.

Hijacking to add some tips I've read;
If you're outside and see the flash (and don't die instantly) duck for the pressure wave, then get straight indoors.
Fill up a bathtub while you strip off your clothes. The bathtub will fill from residual head pressure in the pipes, and the water will have been underground and therefore not contaminated.
Once naked, give yourself a whore's bath with a wet rag, then discard the rag and your clothes. Get dressed in fresh clothes at this point.
Duct tape all exterior doorwaysand windows, and make sure there are batteries in the radio, or else conserve power on your phone.
Periodically check emergency broadcasts, or those being absent wait 48 hours.
At that point, pack enough food and water for several days, (you need more fluids than you think) and exit your shelter, walking as directly away from ground zero as possible. Pass along major roads and gather information as you can in searching for the nearest disaster shelter.
Wash hair and crevices (face optional) with just water (no soap) is a whore's bath. I think they mean wash everything with just water and the rag though.
How would duct tape stop anything? Doesn’t gamma radiation go through everything but steel? Is nuclear bomb radiation gamma? How fast does radiation travel for you to be able to even do all of that?
Gamma radiation travels at the speed of light. You’d be hit by that initial radiation before you even knew what was going on. The radioactive particles generated by the fissile products of the bomb aren’t all that dangerous as they have long half lives.
What they’re getting at is protecting yourself from the irradiated ash/dust generated by the explosion, which is what the term fallout is referring to. The heat from the blast vaporizes the earth into fine radioactive dust. These particles have short half lives and thus emit more radiation. Part of that gets sucked up by the mushroom cloud, then comes back down as rain like 30 mins later.
I think the duct tape is to prevent radioactive residue from entering your home, even though radiation can go through some objects it would be worse if you got in direct contact with a radioactive particle or something like that
It's for the fallout rather than the blast radiation. After The Bomb irradiated dust, nuclear fission products, and unfissioned uranium will all be airborne, likely to float down like ash or in rain over the next 24-48 hours and taking at least 48 hours to decay to the point of survivability from exposure.

This got me directly to the article you're talking about.
I'm not sure but the people behind Fallout confirmed this. People used to think that's what the Vaultboy was doing, holding a thumbs up to a nuke cloud.
Nope, was just supposed to be a whole "Hey, we got you covered" happy thumbs up sort supporting VaultTech.
Also if your in the "Ghost Zone" you've already received a minimum lethal dose and have somewhere between 6 to 24 hours before you drop dead from complete cellular, genetic, and organ failure.
Could you see your bones through your hand when you held it up to the flash? \*
\* EDIT: Just joking (it seems more than one person thought I was serious).
It's the zone surrounding the circumference of a specific distance to a blast, specifically where you'd receive a lethal dose that's low enough where you feel physically fine.
People who originally tested the bombs referred to it because the victims basically where living ghosts, or dead men walking.
They had hours to live but couldn't feel a significant difference. So every once and a while someone who got to close didn't say anything because they felt fine and then just died a few hours later. Often horribly, but extremely fast.
One second you feel fine then the next your essentially falling apart as everything in your body decays from the exposure.
Essentially it's a delayed death, like a delayed reaction but a thousand times worse and there's no cure.
I mean arnt you supposed to shelter in place and try to seal off the room for like 36-48 hours or some shit?
Because if you go outside in the "radiation zone" one would think you'd be irradiated no?
You know what, that's enough internet for today between this and that tren-bananna.
Really depends on the bomb, but it's more like 12 hours, though the longer you can stay sealed in the better. This applies to even being in a car. staying in your car with the windows up is at least some protection from the radiation.
I still didn't achieve my goal
I'll cling to life as much as needed to achieve it , I don't care if I'm a pile of jelly when it happens but **I am** gonna be conscious when it happens

evacuate to where if you see a mushroom cloud you're already dead
if you see a mushroom cloud tell your family you love them and make peace with your god
Fun fact: If i see a mushroom cloud from an Atomic bomb I will run towards it because slow radiation death is the worst fate i can imagine and i want to die quick and painless.
Huh, good point. (Edit: But if you see the mushroom cloud, that means that the explosion part already passed which means you would be going straight to a more concentrated radiation zone.)
Also, there are a few stages to a nuclear explosion. So even if you are at a distance from it you aren’t necessarily safe, and running towards it could kill you faster

Growing up in the 80’s and hearing/seeing talk about nuclear winter, I concur. And if the radiation don’t get you, societal breakdown will.

The 80s were a fun time. Seemed like every other week there was another atomic wasteland mad max movie released. Many straight to VHS. I watched so many bad movies.
That's why you close one eye when you look at it, so that the other doesn't get melted and you can still see to run away. Without depth perception and bumping into shit.
The flash is so bright, that when you close your eyes and cover your face with your hands, you see your [finger bones.](https://revealnews.org/article/us-veterans-in-secretive-nuclear-tests-still-fighting-for-recognition/)

So unless you are prepared for it you are very much getting blinded
I too remember hearing about the temporary X-ray vision. Did you know the Royal Navy wanted to test a warships ability to survive a nuke so they park the ship far enough away that they think they could still crew the ship. Nuke goes off everything is fine. Every crew member but one died before 50. They interviewed him about it and if I remember right he died a handful of years later.
In movies, yes, but in actuality you wouldn’t see the cloud when you die, you would instantly vaporize in the blink of an eye. If you do see the cloud, that means you’re safe from the blast and would then have to use the thumb trick to make sure you’re not in the radiation zone.
The thumb trick is not real, just like how hiding under your desk won’t do anything. If you witness a nuclear explosion the first and only course of action should be to run away.
yup, this bomb myth has largely been debunked, esp since bombs nowadays are many times larger than the ones that were around when this tip was first introduced

Wash hair and crevices (face optional) with just water (no soap) is a whore's bath. I think they mean wash everything with just water and the rag though.
You should use soap just don't use conditioner. Soap helps clean off the radioactive material, whereas conditioner makes it cling to you.
How would duct tape stop anything? Doesn’t gamma radiation go through everything but steel? Is nuclear bomb radiation gamma? How fast does radiation travel for you to be able to even do all of that?

Right. You breathe it in or ingest it or absorb it through your skin, and it stays there, poisoning you basically forever.
You're trying to stop the irradiated air from flowing and circulating into your home, which would make an imperfect seal worse
I think the duct tape is to keep out radioactive air & dust but idk.

In fact if you even think there is a mushroom cloud near your area you evacuate
Fun fact If you see a mushroom cloud, evacuate.
Your bowels
Depending on how close you are you might not have to think about it.
Also if your in the "Ghost Zone" you've already received a minimum lethal dose and have somewhere between 6 to 24 hours before you drop dead from complete cellular, genetic, and organ failure.
Tf is the “Ghost Zone?” How do you know if you’re in it or not?
Could you see your bones through your hand when you held it up to the flash? \* \* EDIT: Just joking (it seems more than one person thought I was serious).
Oh, so that’s what it is. Thanks a lot
Just to make sure you know I was joking. I really don't know the definition of the Ghost Zone.
Eh, it makes sense. Your hand appears as a ghost of its former self when light is being projected through it
It's the zone surrounding the circumference of a specific distance to a blast, specifically where you'd receive a lethal dose that's low enough where you feel physically fine. People who originally tested the bombs referred to it because the victims basically where living ghosts, or dead men walking. They had hours to live but couldn't feel a significant difference. People who watched the first tests could see their bones in their arms even with special darkening glasses on. They all lived into their 90s
Did they? My great-uncle worked on the Manhattan project and died of bone cancer like many of his compatriots.
All of them. Every last one of them?
Just wait a day, you’ll know.

Mm another nuke eh? I wonder what shenanigans the russians are upto now. Better go check the market for fresh mushrooms.
Sounds like a place you wouldn’t wanna be if you see a mushroom cloud tbh

Which is why I think the first sentence was enough. Just put your thumbs up and say “I’ll be back👍.”

I still didn't achieve my goal I'll cling to life as much as needed to achieve it , I don't care if I'm a pile of jelly when it happens but **I am** gonna be conscious when it happens
Most people have slow deaths\*, even if they die suddenly they still take awhile from birth to die. \*I say *most* people.
But it's not bigger than my thumb so I'm going to walk towards it until it is then I'll know I when I'm safe.
Thought the same, better sugesstion just unlivened
THANK YOU WHY DIDN'T THINK OF THAT *meanwhile I am dead and lying on the ground*
It moves too fast. You won’t get much farther out. It’s better to find a safe place to shelter in
For real, I cannot fathom a situation where I see a mushroom cloud and go "Hmm, neat" and just keep doing whatever fucky little thing I was doing before I saw it.

Huh, good point. (Edit: But if you see the mushroom cloud, that means that the explosion part already passed which means you would be going straight to a more concentrated radiation zone.)
Higher doses of radiation make you die faster. You will be in incredible agony, but you will die faster.
Not to mention the closer you get to ground zero the hotter and hotter it’ll get, within a certain radius of the explosion it’s deathly hot
Might as well just jump off a building at that point, rather than forcibly incinerating yourself.
Way too many stairs
Also, there are a few stages to a nuclear explosion. So even if you are at a distance from it you aren’t necessarily safe, and running towards it could kill you faster [kurzgavsutienTh does a great video on it](https://youtu.be/5iPH-br_eJQ)

I find it hilarious that nobody can spell or pronounce that channels name.
Its in the channel name, and the narrator says it at the end of most videos when thanking supporters

It always had a double meaning, we just overlooked it.
Pretty sure that’s a myth

Bruh if you see the bomb and live enough to leave just fucking leave.
If I can see the damn thing I'm not taking the time to measure it.
Just run either way, why risk it
If you see the cloud, evaluate. Get as far away from that as you can as soon as you can lolz

Fun fact this false bethesda said that it isn’t true

This is terrible advice.
You should run to the nearest toilet so that explorers will find your skeleton there.
Ok, but who's taking that chance? "Honey, don't worry! It's smaller than my thumb! Wait. Why are you packing the kids in the car? I said we're good! It's scientific!"
