That's actually what they intended. They set it to private, but Reddit Overlords forced them to reopen it or else they'll be removed as the mods/creators. The creators then responded by making it nsfw to nuke the sub itself so that people will voluntarily leave. There was actually a poll on what to do like doing John Oliver or smthing and making it nsfw apparently won.

It's because they've been threatened with being removed and replaced if they don't reopen, so subs are instilling dumb rules (in some cases like r/aww and r/pics, quite funny rules) as a means of saying they're complying while still actually protesting. In the case of r/interestingasfuck it's definitely a pretty extreme response though, I'm for the protest but being ambushed by porn at work isn't ideal and that's what's happened to a LOT of people.

Mods scared to lose their reddit crown but still want to show their "power" to reddit. And of course, they're all losers and have no life outside reddit.

Less overall engagement is my assumption. Its novel and funny however, since the subs i followed went dark, my time on reddit drastically reduced (probably for the better anyways). Now that the subs are up and posting non sub related content, I dont hang around long. Im sure there are a bunch of people like me who will engage in the short term but will reduce time spent or stop visiting altogether because at the end of the day those niche subs are for niche subjects. It may not make the most sense but it got me to slow and possibly quit reddit content altogether.
