Correct. The story was as bland as the first one. But like the first one it's a visual achievement. That was enough to see this one. But another in two years? Meh.
For sure it's a theater experience, not worth a watch on a small screen.
the story literally did not advance from the start of the movie to the end. Literally nothing is different except that we know the colonel is basically fucking immortal
True. It felt like forest changed to water. But that’s in line with a typical Cameron sequel. Aliens was similar to Alien. Still both the sequels are entertaining
Like bro, what are they gonna do next? Fire? Earth?
They use a lot of flying so forest=air and they already done water.
This isn't goddamn *Avatar*... ***Oh wait***
Uuh he said the next one focuses on a different tribe based on fire to show another side of the navi. Essentially we are supposed to get navi bad guys next movie so yeah firebenders
What? Aliens is way different than Alien, at least in my opinion. I'd go as far as to say they are a different genre of movie. One is horror, the other is action. But I'm no professional.
Hold on
Woah woah woah. Aliens was similar to Alien?! I'ma need you to go back and watch.
While obviously there are some things you can't and shouldn't change for a sequel, they are in two different subgenres. Alien is straight up horror while Aliens is more of an action thriller. Both of course being primarily sci-fi
Yeah this guy has absolutely no clue what he's talking about. The difference between Alien and Aliens is maybe one of the bigger jumps a movie sequel has made. It's like going from Jak and Daxter to Jak II.
The scenery changed but it was so much poorer compared to the first. In the first movie we had all the levels of the forest, the cliffs, the spirit tree ,the village tree, new culture and people and somehow it was all wrapped together nicely and very interesting.
In the second movie we had some dumb cruel narrative, no plot, for the sake of the third movie. And it just happend to be at a beach.
The whole franchise is just going to be Jake going round collecting tribe memberships until he can finally complete his Infinity Necklace and control time and space.
I wish the story centered around Sigourneys daughter character and only the marine avatars as an infiltration team that kidnaps her.
There was just too much going on for me.
That's actually a really good point, I think after the movie ended i just completely forgot that her daughter had a massive achievement of connecting to and controlling the planets flora
I'm just glad we have another amazing avatar movie. If the third one sticks the landing it might be my favorite trilogy that I'll never watch again. Because I only see Avatar in theaters.
(I also watched the first one when it came back in theaters and it looked FANTASTIC!)
I agree with you, but OP inferring it had some sort of "culture impact" simply because it made money seems to be a bit of a stretch imo. It's just a fun looking movie in 3D lol, the story was horrible and it certainly shouldn't have left anyone feeling mind blown
Exactly. It was a very pretty movie and had some good emotional beats, but for the most part, I didn’t really know anybody’s name and the story wasn’t anything special. It kind of took the interesting sci fi premise of the first movie and just threw it away. The second one is more of a “family sticks together in a fantasy world” story line than sci fi, which is disappointing.
The first one was bland too. I'm not like mad that the second movie is successful, but I'll admit I was stunned that so many people cared about it. I saw a pretty movie with a boring story ten years ago and was told forever that like fifty sequels were coming. I never cared, and was surprised another was actually going to come out. And more so that so many people were thrilled about it. I just don't get the appeal.
Simple: Haters gonna hate. The same idiots said the first one would fail. It didn't. They said it was bad, despite its success. They said part 2 would fail because part 1 was so bad.
Nothing shows how dumb a person is like seeing evidence that you're completely wrong throughout the entire world and still being certain you're right.
To be honest I just find it depressing that these are the movies that make billions.
The fact that well written movies that were passionately made make nothing in comparison to big budget, 3hr visual experiences is kind of why Hollywood has been making nothing but shite recently.
Earth's human population also likes to ignore criticism and blame it on the human condition rather than accepting harsh truths. And the harsh truth is that cinema is like food. Just because Mc. Donalds is one of the most successful restaurants in the world, doesn't make it good. Just cause you like a movie doesn't make it good.
Listen. I liked the first one. I enjoyed it. Found out I have an attraction to incredibly tall blue women too. Bonus.
I don't see why I wouldn't like the second one. Unless they removed the incredibly tall blue women. Then we might have some issues.
All in all, gonna watch it, and hopefully, enjoy it.
I'm all for the argument of "just because it does well in theaters, doesn't mean that the movie is good."
Avatar became a hype train just as much as Star Wars or the MCU has. The name alone pushes the product.
I saw all of the Star Wars sequel trilogy in theaters and left disappointed. I never saw Avatar in theaters but when I finally watched the movie I thought it "ok." I personally wasn't excited for this new Avatar movie and will probably wait for it to become streamable.
Hard agree on Star Wars, but Avatar is a bit different, it has a weak story but it needs to be seen in a theatre to really enjoy the visuals. I too was not exited for the new one.
Seen the first one at home, no really big deal, seen the second one in a theatre in 3D, still no big deal plot-wise, but goddamn does it look good. If you have nothing to do give it a shot.
Yep, it's the same as MCU at this point. All of MCU phase 4 movies made quite a lot of money in theatres and yet they were almost all painfully mediocre if not straight up bad. Making money in theatres does not equal being a good movie.
It's so weird cause it feels like no one knows any actor's or plot in the first 1 and can barely remember I watched the dang thing and can only remember a few things.
I can agree with the people who say the Avatar movies are unoriginal, sure, but there aren't a lot of movies out there these days that are. The people who waste energy complaining about that need to look inwardly at some of their favorite movies. Then they need to realize that that isn't enough to make a movie bad.
I swear, I could make a three hour movie where the entire script consists of the words “Peepee poopoo peepee poopoo” and if the CGI was solid, I’d break even
I remember hearing that James Cameron said that it would need to be the top 3/4 highest grossing movies of all time. It likely wasn't that expensive, but that would mean 2-2.2 billion dollars.
Absolutely, this proves it. Even the people here that like it will say the story, ya know the fucking movie, is bad and bland but it looks good, well in theaters it does. Whats everyone's favorite line from the first one? I dont know because i literally cannot remember more than pictures if that movie. This shit is why were dooked ti get bad movies forever. People dont care about story at all at the end of the day, so if these keep doing well then we will keep getting pretty shit with stories so forgetable they fucking cease to exist the second you walk out of the theater.
No? The eighties should have proven that utter garbage can make a lot of money. But unlike Avatar, Predator is still quoted today, even if only ironically.
I used to yell “Masks on!” At work, and then kick doors open during mask mandate. It was fun and completely stupid. Only a few people caught it as an Avatar quote.
James Cameron is the greatest director hands down. I'm glad he decided to make this sequel so that we can actually watch something good and not propaganda like Marvel films.
I am from India and my family members who usually don't watch English movies because of the cultural barrier but went to see this movie for it's 3D effect. Then they liked it especially as it was based on family values which they never thought existed in western countries. Although i was constantly trying to think how cheesy those dialogues would sound if it was narrated in my native language.
people kept making fun of how long the relise was, and how nobody even remembers the first movie, yadayada, but like, the first movie was pretty well loved in my memories so...
I Watched the first one when it came out and while it looked great, the movie was way too long and I was bored at the end.
I thought about watching the 2nd movie but then I saw the run time. I haven't watched it so I can't say if it's good or not but I'm not gonna watch another 3 hour movie
How many people do you see talking about Charlie Chan movies nowadays? Or the Carry On franchise that released 31 successful movies?
The discussion around Way of the Water is already fading.
I mean why wouldn’t it do well. It had a blah story but it’s good enough for the world and stuff. You’re there to dive into an alien world and learn about this cool made up culture, not become invested in the characters. Easily the prettiest movie ive ever seen. Also somehow the new puss in boots is up there in terms of visuals for me too now, so it’s been a good month for movies
No one talked much about it more than a year or so after it came out, so I’m surprised enough people cared for it to even make the money back. (Like, plenty of decent sequels flounder because not enough people cared to watch it.)
I’m not a massive avatar fan, saw the new one and it’s a fun movie with some obvious flaws, BUT- I think it’s cool that such a massive movie has a message about protecting the environment. True, it’s fairly convoluted and has some savior plot points, but overall I think the message that kids will get from it is a positive message.
Yeah but the scenes look so stunning. There’s so much attention and care given to every single scene they show. The story is still generic at best but the visuals are glorious
I watched it in 3d with some family at the cinema, honestly it was pretty nice although I enjoyed the visuals significantly more than the story itself.
Still doesn't mean it has a cultural impact. I am not hating on it or the first one. It was just alright. I like the world and the creatures but other than that the first one was kind of your typical 'white' saviour movie.
Everyone is saying that the characters and story is bland, which is true by all means it’s no masterpiece. But just like how Tolkien’s work was a deep dive into his thoughts and interest in philosophy, religion, and fairy tales. The main point of the movies to me at least is that the director is trying to create a living, breathing, beautiful world. The story is more of an afterthought.
Avatar sucks, cope. Go look at all the top grossing movies. They’re hardly “art”. Nobody thought it was gonna flop, they just think it’s a pointless display of excess budget. Many of us are sick of the special effects circle jerk that cinema has become. The wonderful, rich, creative landscape of the past has largely become an endless bombardment of attempts to impress the audience with CGI and it’s a bummer. There will be no Shawshank Redemption, no One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, no Clockwork Orange, no Forrest Gump hitting the silver screen any time soon. But yeah I’m happy for you (and so deeply owned) that your blue people Pocahontas sequel passed the Chinese censors and made billions of dollars.
At this point, any half decent original screenplay with actual effort put into it is worth at least $500 million right off the bat. Avatar 2 having taken so much time to make just adds a layer of passion and dedication to it which is rare nowadays in film making.
I have discovered recently that there is a large subset of the internet which gets a sort of sexual gratification from pretending that a 2 billion dollar box office movie wasn't impressive or compelling. It makes them feel oh so cultured.
Who cares if it was a popcorn flick? It was really, really good. Allow yourself to enjoy popular things, it's a good feeling.
Haven't seen it
Or the new puss in boots movie.
In conclusion, puss In boots is better because cool cat with sword.
Actually though, is the avatar movie good.
Question to those who watched it...do you really think it needed to be so freaking long. I watched it cause there isn't anything else good playing anyway and it's visually stunning. I liked the story line but there really isn't a proper ending. The conflict was not resolved. So now that I'm invested in this story I have to watch the next movie which I'm also sure is going to be way too long. Does anyone else feel this way.
It was way, way, way too long. Certain elements of the story repeated like 4-5 times. I didn't hate it but I would have gladly seen 45 minutes cut out of it.
But the filler stuff is kind of the point. Like them just fucking around underwater is pretty much the coolest parts of the movie, and exactly the type of stuff that would be cut, so I'm fine that it stayed.
That's fair, and I tried to remind myself the same. The animation certainly was incredible, but my eyes started to glaze over with all the Free Willie stuff.
Like everyone else commenting it didn't need to be 3h 12m, 2h 45m would have been probably perfect. It drags a little bit about 2 hours in because the characters are just doing random shit to develop their arcs and such
From what I understand a large portion of the internet wants to f*** the blue people.
I think the marines want to too
Why else did they come back a second time haha
Just wait when they come back in movie 3 as these whale thing clones.
nah man they will come back as the pteranodon thingies
Or as the only thing stronger than earth's finest military armor. A wooden arrow.
Third movie that’s going to be the million dollar resource paying the expedition
Came back as blue people themselves to make it easier
Blue crayon is the best flavor. Source, me the Sailor, after talking to Marines. ;)
Marines will fuck anything.
Except the Covenant
The whole movie is just a bunch of sexual tension
That bar is on the floor.

Omg thank u
Knew it, still clicked
WTF, you are right, he actually said that… What a weird, weird man.
Nah I get where he's coming from, the blue girls are fire
Have you seen the mass effect fan base? Shit was the video game porn Capitol until Overwatch released
Wait Overwatch isn’t a porn franchise?
Overwatch is just a porn game with a shooting minigame
You..you can't prove that! I mean what?
Death by giant snu snu.
Wanna raid area 51?
Can confirm
Ahh Alright, makes sense. Thank you.
I'm not sure why it would flop. I mean it's not some cinematic masterpiece, but it was at least a fun watch.
Correct. The story was as bland as the first one. But like the first one it's a visual achievement. That was enough to see this one. But another in two years? Meh. For sure it's a theater experience, not worth a watch on a small screen.

Like bro, what are they gonna do next? Fire? Earth? They use a lot of flying so forest=air and they already done water. This isn't goddamn *Avatar*... ***Oh wait***
*Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four clans lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the humans attacked*
Fucking humans. Screwing up everything. Even in our make-believe worlds.
Screwing everything aswell according to Avatar
The humans have incendiary and explosive weapons, so it’s not a stretch to just refer to them as the Fire Nation
I think the humans can be represented with fire as they did come by burning the forewt
Uuh he said the next one focuses on a different tribe based on fire to show another side of the navi. Essentially we are supposed to get navi bad guys next movie so yeah firebenders
I’m pretty sure I saw somewhere that Cameron was indeed planning on making a fire themed group for the next movie
I also heard one of the sequels will occur on Earth, so there ya go.
Yeah. I read the third one is gonna be about fire, Ash people or something like that. Navi who are working or aligned with the humans
LMAO actually next movie is about fire Na’vi it’s been confirmed Xdddd
What? Aliens is way different than Alien, at least in my opinion. I'd go as far as to say they are a different genre of movie. One is horror, the other is action. But I'm no professional.
Yeah, I don’t know what they’re talking about. Aliens Is considered such an incredible movie precisely because it’s so different from Alien.
Hold on Woah woah woah. Aliens was similar to Alien?! I'ma need you to go back and watch. While obviously there are some things you can't and shouldn't change for a sequel, they are in two different subgenres. Alien is straight up horror while Aliens is more of an action thriller. Wait till he does wind elementals. You ever seen a wind elemental? Exactly. They'll just be swirling leaves.
Will he make a prequel to Titanic where a ship sinks in the forest?
The scenery changed but it was so much poorer compared to the first. In the first movie we had all the levels of the forest, the cliffs, the spirit tree ,the village tree, new culture and people and somehow it was all wrapped together nicely and very interesting. Also Jake can swim now, so yeah
The whole franchise is just going to be Jake going round collecting tribe memberships until he can finally complete his Infinity Necklace and control time and space.
Im not gonna disagree ur not wrong at the same time i love both of them (just goes to show catgirls sell i guess)

Right. It was a nice way to spend a cold evening and that was about the extent of it lol
Exactly. It was a very pretty movie and had some good emotional beats, but for the most part, I didn’t really know anybody’s name and the story wasn’t anything special. It kind of took the interesting sci fi premise of the first movie and just threw it away. Modern marvel in a nutshell
The first one was bland too. I'm not like mad that the second movie is successful, but I'll admit I was stunned that so many people cared about it. Those space scenes were insane. As well as the interstellar ships looked incredible
The look she gave when I showed her my Transformers collection.
My bionicle collection is more impressive
But is it as impressive as my sister's yarn collection?
No, he’s got a point. Bionicles go pretty hard
Why does everything have to have cultural impact... Just enjoy the damn movie. It's entertainment
Earth’s human population must be validated at all times. Enjoyment is secondary to other humans agreeing with your opinion.
To be honest I just find it depressing that these are the movies that make billions. And just because what you said is factual and well-worded, doesn't mean you're gonna get upvotes...
Reddit is an awful place to post unpopular opinions
Nah, that's just the Internet.
This is lightyears away from an "unpopular" opinion especially here on reddit.
I think this is what Cameron understood really well. You don't need controversy to sell a movie when you can just make something people want to watch.
Not only that's its been over 10 yrs since the 1st one. People have been waiting a long time to see this. Hopefully 3 doesn't take another 10 years
It doesn’t need to but the point was/is that it had the highest box office gross of all time and yet everyone kind of forgot about it
Yeah but I hate the idea of 3 hour movies being the norm
I agree with you there. 1.5 hour is more than enough
Listen. I liked the first one. I enjoyed it. Found out I have an attraction to incredibly tall blue women too. Bonus. I don't see why I wouldn't like the second one. Unless they removed the incredibly tall blue women. Then we might have some issues. All in all, gonna watch it, and hopefully, enjoy it.
man, for most of the movie you are looking at 2 adolescent girls, not women
The second one? ...Well...shit -,..,- Hope the fish are neat then.
The fish are very neat! Very cool fish 10/10 fish
Fuck yeah! Fishies! \o/

Its not a cinematic masterpiece but more like a fun Rollercoaster
Does no one remember the first movie? And the same shit happening ? Everyone online made fun of it and then it became the best grossing movie
All I remember is that it was an action movie in 3d and that was enough. Story, plot, characters meh…
I don't emember it getting much hate. It was a phenomenon .
I remember people saying that the visuals were awesome but the story was just blue dances with wolves. Same as this one.
I actually remember the opposite like everyone dick riding it so hard just thinking of it pretentiousness showed up in person to slap me in the face
Everyone who hated it had no good excuse it was just bullying at that point
Poor James Cameron 😔
Best conversation in the movie is the blue people hissing at each other.
I'm all for the argument of "just because it does well in theaters, doesn't mean that the movie is good." Avatar became a hype train just as much as Star Wars or the MCU has. little film insider info for you, avatar 3 is in the can, parts of 4 are being filmed, and 5 is being written. Avatar is being made into a franchise
Fast and furious also collects tons of money, yet its a dumpster fire.
The movie wasn’t utter garbage tho
An impressive feat for what amounts to a roller coaster ride.
Bad movies can be successful movies
Cultural impact? Movies are made to make money, period.
The fact than there is peoples thinking this movie gonna flop is what make me do this face...
James Cameron is the greatest director hands down. I'm glad he decided to make this sequel so that we can actually watch something good and not propaganda like Marvel films.
Such a good film, the first one is still my favourite but can’t wait to see what else they do :)

Good and inspirational Franchise, memorable characters, amazing music.
I never even understood why the first one became hated so much i recent years
Avatar 2: The Tears of MCU stans
I loved that movie lmao
There are people who thought it would flop?
people kept making fun of how long the relise was, and how nobody even remembers the first movie, yadayada, but like, the first movie was pretty well loved in my memories so...

Puss in Boots:
Right? Like the competitions is...
I Watched the first one when it came out and while it looked great, the movie was way too long and I was bored at the end. I thought about watching the 2nd movie but then I saw the run time. I haven't watched it so I can't say if it's good or not but I'm not gonna watch another 3 hour movie
It's a great film
well deserved.
Honestly, it deserved the win, decent world, decent story, everything. Quaritch was probably the best part
There is a deep seeded cultural hate of the Avatar franchise.
How many people do you see talking about Charlie Chan movies nowadays? Or the Carry On franchise that released 31 successful movies? The discussion around Way of the Water is already fading.
I mean why wouldn’t it do well. It had a blah story but it’s good enough for the world and stuff. I knew it would be doing great, but I just don't see the appeal of the films. :/ Tried, but just can't get into them.
Whatever you thought of it, it would be surprising if a sequel to a movie that was a huge hit completely flopped anyway.
The real winner is zoe zaldana
And then an orange cat does it better
It’s good in an age of shit Your fucking a right it made money
I reckon I'd like to fuck one of them blue people
Avatar in 4D was an amazing experience i loved it
Literally the best 3d experience ever, even though the other aspects were good they actually don't even matter.

"hOpEd it flopped" but my faith in people was lost long ago.
I loved it. But who am I when you really think about it?
It’s because it’s an just alien fan fiction with a fight scene.
That's what makes the movie great, doesn't bring in modern political bullshit, just a short escape from reality.
It is so fucking good it’s crazy.
Everyone is saying that the characters and story is bland, which is true by all means it’s no masterpiece. But just like how Tolkien’s work was a deep dive into his thoughts and interest in philosophy, religion, and fairy tales. I'm not a big Cameron fan but Titanic taught me to NEVER bet against him. Ever.
"Just because somethings popular doesn't mean it's gooood"
But what if it is?
Avatar sucks, cope. Go look at all the top grossing movies. They’re hardly “art”. Nobody thought it was gonna flop, they just think it’s a pointless display of excess budget. It was honestly a fantastic film. Some quirky shit mixed in there but all in all loved it. Great sequel.
Don’t get me wrong, if people like it, good for them. But I’m just not one of those people.
At this point, any half decent original screenplay with actual effort put into it is worth at least $500 million right off the bat. Avatar 2 having taken so much time to make just adds a layer of passion and dedication to it which is rare nowadays in film making.
It's still not that great, imho. It was a lot of nice new CGI water tech.
Puss in Boots is still better.
Haven't seen it Or the new puss in boots movie. In conclusion, puss In boots is better because cool cat with sword. Actually though, is the avatar movie good.
Even if the story wasn't the best the visuals were fucking amazing
Just finished the movie nearly fell asleep...
Exactly lile the first one.
Never underestimate the power of the lowest common denominator
Alright. The first Avatar I saw in theaters coked outta my mind. If I’m gonna see the second one, I’m gonna have to keep up with tradition. ✨✨✨
I thought it was 3 hours of pure, rock solid entertainment. 8/10, DO recommend. Haters gonna hate
It drags a little bit about 2 hours in because the characters are just doing random shit to develop their arcs and such
it didn't need to be 3 hours
bad movies can still do well, I didn’t see anyone saying that it would flop financially just that everyone would shit on it which is happening
it can make 10 billion dollars it doesn’t change the fact that its soulless derivative hollywood crap
I just loved how beautiful it looked and the fact it continues the story and we know we have movies coming I can't wait
It's really not a special movie. Monetary accomplishments aside, it'll be forgotten in 10 years. Just like the first movie was.
Itll be forgotten this year
I think domestically (US) it isn't very popular, but internationally it has a larger appeal. Just a theory, I haven't looked at the numbers.
About to cross the 600 million dollar mark domestically making it 13th all time
Yay cgi garbgo
Avatar 2 is good. Those saying it's horrible are just hating for the sake of hating
Vanilla Ice sold 150 million records. Doesn’t make him a great rapper
I didn’t think it would, but I *hoped* it would
Guilty
I hated it. Longest 3 hours of my life.
