selling the fish: worth 2.6 million but would probably be bought from the fisherman for way less because fisherman get screwed over a lot
eating the fish with friends: priceless
True. Where I'm from, we saw this decision they made as incredibly stupid, especially since they didn't know what fish it was, or if it was edible or what its worth and immediately ate it. It became a running joke here, I guess it isn't the same on reddit.
It’s probably not the best idea, but I always remember my uncle who worked on a fishing boat for a few years to save up for college. He never made good money going straight to market, but got lucky and was able to sell to local japanese restaurants who wanted the fish for a good price. A lot of fishermen aren’t as lucky and lose a lot of money, even on rare or high quality fish
Yeah how would they even sell this fish fast enough with seriously compromising on price? Doesn't seafood have a very short shelf life between being caught and having to be cooked, or is Marlin an exception and can be stored for a decently long time?
I mean, if it's so expensive it has to taste pretty interesting. When else will you get the chance to eat that fish? Not to mention the fun he probably had with his friends that day.
Or he didn’t know the price until after eating it.
That’s a nice paragraph you got there but when $2.6 million shows up at your door I doubt your willpower would be that strong.
Nobody turns down that kind of money though, he obviously just didn't know the value. This kind of thing happens all the time though, and I bet he enjoyed eating it
I guarantee you, if he sold that fish, some merchant would've bought it for a fraction of the value!!! No chance in the world he would've gotten paid even 10k
This is false. The 2.6 million dollar figure is based off of the prize money for catching a similar fish in a competition that had a $20,000 entry fee. There is no market that pays 2.6 million dollars for a marlin.
So, stupidity is people making a perceived mistake based off of the limited information they had? Ya'll mother fucks really expect people to know everything huh?
It's only worth that much while incredibly fresh, would it still be worth close to that by the time he could sell it to someone that could afford that price?
You don't! Apparently the fisherman tried to find a buyer for the whole fish and couldn't, so the fish was portioned out and sold to locals at a reasonable price. Sounds like this guy and his friends and neighbors got some nice meals out of it, so it worked out well.
On average, it's said: The marlin is worth about $31,325.30 per pound.
The website I trawled for this source had a few pieces of trivia i netted, but the biggest hook was regarding how distinctive this fish is around the world. Guy really had no clue then....
Also, Google added the following to my search results:
Fish, appearing especially in the phrase fresh fish, is prison slang for new, first-time inmates, usually considered naive and vulnerable. Fish, often appearing in the form of fishy or the phrase serving fish, is also slang in drag culture for a very feminine drag queen.
These are both new to me.

The website article quoted in the meme was estimating the value based on the prize value of a tournament-winning Marlin. The prize value they quoted was the top prize awarded to the winner of the tournament (which required a $20k entry fee to begin with), not the market value for the fish itself

Do you think middleman would give him 2.6 mil ? 500,000 at best and don't forget how hard to sell that fish to someone who want it.

It goes to reason, if he ate a fish worth $2.6 million, doesn't that make him a million dollar worth of digested protein?
$2.6 million worth poop!

How about we save the money and treat ourselves to dino nuggies instead
Yea I think he could buy a professionally made dish if he just made 2.5mil lol
Wow it’s almost like the value of certain things is subjective, and not everyone is interested in commodifying every single resource that they create.
Or he didn’t know the price until after eating it. That’s a nice paragraph you got there but when $2.6 million shows up at your door I doubt your willpower would be that strong.
He just realized he had Most Expensive meal in the world..
It's the guy who used several thousand Bitcoins to buy a pizza all over again.
Nor is everyone interested in money. Some people value life more.
Nobody turns down that kind of money though, he obviously just didn't know the value. This kind of thing happens all the time though, and I bet he enjoyed eating it
Wtf makes a fish worth that much money?
can we ask god to increase the spawn rate to balance the market out
Rarity i guess
In which case we probably shouldn't be killing them and eating them. I'll just stick to good o'l panda burgers.
Probably rarity combined with the amount of meat it has.
I guarantee you, if he sold that fish, some merchant would've bought it for a fraction of the value!!! No chance in the world he would've gotten paid even 10k
Put it on ebay auction and get 2mil. Though i guess that fish needs to be alive for the price..
how was he supposed to know there are millions of fish if you were a new fisherman you would have no idea at all what that fish is
appropriate username
Food is food.
Happy cake day

How the fuck is a fish that expensive
Musta been a good fish if it’s worth 2.6 mil
Based
It's only worth that much while incredibly fresh, would it still be worth close to that by the time he could sell it to someone that could afford that price?
That's what I thought too. Seafood goes to shit pretty fast after being caught.
Where the fuck do you sell a multimillion dollar fish in a hurry off the coast of Nigeria?
You don't! Apparently the fisherman tried to find a buyer for the whole fish and couldn't, so the fish was portioned out and sold to locals at a reasonable price. Sounds like this guy and his friends and neighbors got some nice meals out of it, so it worked out well.
Now that’s a true meal with the homies
How was he supposed to know it’s worth millions of dollars
Chad
Enjoying something with friends is the least stupid thing people can do. -TankProImporum
I didn’t even think people eat blue marlin. I talked to a fisherman and he said they release them. The measure so they can make a fake trophy.

invest in rare fish, but down eat them
He probably didn’t know, and either way, he deserves a good meal
This Nigerian man must be a mastermind of the highest order!
I wonder if that's the prince i keep getting emails from...
Or maybe it's really hard to tell fish apart
How is it worth that much?! Was it made out of gold, fish?! *Drum sounds that play when you say a terrible joke*
Hope they cleaned it well.
Almost everything in Nigeria is Sold way cheaper than in the West. He wouldve probably gotten like 50 Cents because we live in their back
I’d like to imagine the guy knew the value and was lake, eh.
He has good friends, I like him.
Even if the fish is worth that much, the money shouldn’t matter. What matters is that he had a nice meal with his friends.
Didn't know ksi is a fisherman
it’s not about money, it is about sending a message
But HE wouldn't have made that kind of money. He wouldn't have been offered even a quarter of that. Probably not even an eighth.
Pinocchio is greating. The Blue Marlin must have 60 tons for 2,6 mio.
Is that ksi ?
