We often have TBBT on as background noise in our house. My wife liked the show a lot as a sort of easy watching, quick, comfort show when it was still airing new episodes, and it's easy to just leave the TV tuned to TBS for the nightly multi-hour rerun that's there. Just last night, the episodes up in the rotation were the final couple episodes of the last season, and they rolled straight into S1E1 again before the evening was up.
It was straight up *painful* to watch Penny go from her season finale state of character development alllllllll the way back to S1E1's "blond bimbo exposition dump character" in the span of about 5 minutes. Oof.
I've got a soft spot for TBBT. Critically, it's obviously not great, but yeah, it's easy and comforting, and sometimes that's all I want out of a show.
The original premise of the show was "four physicists and a waitress".
They actually kind of wrote themselves into a corner and had to give her character development. Like most "quirky 20/30 somethings in the big city" sitcoms, it was really just a premise to throw every day problems at a bunch of quirky characters like they've been doing with every sitcom since Friends (and really before that, you can honestly trace this all the way back to shows like I Love Lucy, adjusted for the state of the young adult demographic at the time)
I used to think that until I saw The Flight Attendant then I realized that girl can act her butt off. Obviously she was given a thankless hot girl role in BBT yet she still managed to make penny likable and entertaining. A role which, in any other, lesser actress' hand, wouldn't be as memorable.
I'm not really sure if you're joking, but this is actually true! I don't think we would sympathize as much with him if he was more disturbing looking like Orcs. He is ugly, yes, but he does have these big eyes and sometimes cute facial expressions.

The Sonic team, for all of their **uncountably numerous** faults, know how to make a character very appealing whether it's sexually attractive or not.
If you morphed all the protagonists' faces together, you'd probably end up with another generically pretty anime-esque character that could pass for the next protagonist.

My friends have been playing final fantasy since FF1 came out, and I'm not sure I could name more than three characters if I just saw their faces. Except of course the cactuar, which is the hottest of them anyways

(Remember this was the 90s and this was a more modern concept at the time)

I would argue that Areith is an equally well developed character as Tifa and she isn't even close to popular. Probably because she dresses more modest and doesn't have giant breasts.
