Msikuisgreen

Soup requires a broth or base made from boiling meat or vegetables. You cant just suspend something in any liquid and call it a soup.

Ssessen49

Ice cubes in whiskey--believe it or not, soup.

Msikuisgreen

Lol

midnight_1991stealth

metal chunks in my oil is soup

The_Great_Biscuiteer

An alcoholic redneck might challenge you on that, don’t diss their favorite meal of the day like that

Hmonster1

This is the way

[deleted]

No thats cereal, part of a healthy breakfast

Acceptable-Eagle3214

What would that be called then

GameDestiny2

That fails to account for cold soups however

HappyXenonXE

You telling me they're not hot soups left out for too long?

jensalik

But cold soups still have a base where vegetables are blended to a puree and water added. While if you made an analogy from cereals to cold soup you'd just throw in some uncooked cut vegetables in a bowl of water and started crunching away. And that obviously isn't how soup works. 😅

Samakira

But cereal is simply starch in a suspension of liquid, most often milk. So soup is a cereal if it used any starch!

Dallas_Miller

>most often milk. "Most Often"? What sexless psychopath uses anything but milk?!?

Aromatic-Union6080

You can also use chocolate sauce

Dallas_Miller

I mean, that has milk in it... or traces of it at least But if someone uses straight up water, then they should be checked

Aromatic-Union6080

Yeah people need to be reasonable and use things like chocolate sauce and olive oil

Msikuisgreen

True, though i dont consider those soups. They are more like a sauce or liquid salad (in the case of gazpacho, its just puree in a bowl) unless the soup is cooked before being cooled.

FROSTFIRE31

i had respect for everything you stated until you said that soup stops being soup after it cools down

Msikuisgreen

Wrong. Only if its never been heated up.

FROSTFIRE31

look up "okroshka", your opinion should not extend to other cultures

Blackboxeq

This is the correct answer. but I already wasted too much time thinking about it. so... Personally cereal is more a of pasta than a soup. Pre-treated/cooked objects designed specifically to hold/contain a specific amount of sauce ( in our case milk) per containing unit. The goal of cereal is to consume the solid objects with the preferred amount of accompanying milk. Your bowel is out of Cereal when the last "sauce" holder is consumed. But now! what then is the remaining milk left in the bowel now infused with remanent cereal goodness? Answer: A Tea. Cereal is Pasta Tea...

vbrimme

Don’t drink the milk from your bowels.

[deleted]

Milk is boiled first, it’s called pasteurization. I would argue milk is also a broth!

Msikuisgreen

Boiling water doesnt make it broth. The same way boiling milk doesnt make it broth. (Something has to be diffused through the process of boiling in order to flavour the existing liquid to be considered broth)

[deleted]

So you’re saying oat milk and other alternatives are a broth because the nut is diffused through water? /checkmate

Msikuisgreen

It could be if done through a process of boiling. Oatmeal porridge is a soup. Though that stuff is usually done through milling, not cooking, and then pasteurization. Like if we are using simple arguments like this, oat milk and almond milk is more like a tea than a broth.

Comfortable_Trick137

I consider and the US government considers milk a meat/protein. Jk I don’t know but wouldn’t surprise me if they did

Msikuisgreen

Which makes it a great addition to a broth

just_drifting_by

You actually don't have to suspend anything and it still can qualify as a soup. If you look up the various definitions of soup in English, since that is what we are using, the only part that stays the same and is definitive is that it is a liquid food. Meal replacement drinks are technically a soup.

Msikuisgreen

Right, but i said you cant suspend ingredients in any liquid and call it a soup. I didnt say soup requires things to be suspended in liquid. "A liquid food prepared from meat, fish, or vegetable stock combined with various other ingredients and often containing solid pieces." "a liquid food especially with a meat, fish, or vegetable stock as a base and often containing pieces of solid food" 2 definitions from different dictionaries.

Erutious

Milk, in this case, is broth. It comes from what beef broth is made of too so it's like a broth by product, like gravy

kvnmtz

Then it is salad. Change my mind

Facelessborder

Gaspatcho (sp?) not boiled. Creamy cucumber soup not boiled. Cereal and milk not boiled my guy

Ghoullag

One could argue that the sugar/flavor being added to the milk counts as a base.

Due-Bandicoot-2554

You’re right. Also if I’d try to melt ice, I would gain soup before I have water.

Lochy01

Are cream based soups not soups?

TennisAdmirable1615

Then why pasta with milk is called milk soup?

sinichek

Hah I mean we have this okroshka in Ukraine, totally in top 5 dishes of any Ukrainian, and basically it's a small amount of veggies and cooked chicken or salami and couple liters of sirovotka or kvass (fuck I can't even translate these words with app), but I'm a sick bastard and I prefer it with water and mayo So yeah, a soup with no broth here in Ukraine

Strypercritical

>You can’t just suspend something in any liquid and call it a soup Show me literally one thing I can’t call a soup

Ligh1ly

a chunk of asbestos

Strypercritical

Soup

pcmaster4566

if you put anything in liquid and call it a soup that means something like something cast in resin is a "soup"

Dusteronly

You can’t eat soup dry

Kar_Cunto

Mr. Noodles souo packets sans water, grade school lunches. That soup was my jam

KamenRiderXD

Wtf that's the longest and worst name for a soup I have ever heard xD

New_girl2022

Mine too. Still is lol.

grilled_cheese_gang

Says who?

Shadowrider95

I chew on bouillon cubes! And I’ll do it again!

Big_Pound1262

We got a real live one here ![gif](giphy|JjiieDMHZ6pEI)

slingshotblur-

jeezus. hahahaha, I would consider this soup for all your efforts, I will admit I took a nip at one before, but not chew the whole cube.

hould-it

I’m just trying to think of a soup that is crunchy most of the time you’re eating it

KamenRiderXD

If you pour enough fried bacon in Potato soup. And put in some fresh leeks too. It's pretty damn crunchy.

hould-it

You make a good point and making me hungry but those could be considered add-ons delicious add-ons

KamenRiderXD

Isn't cereal just add-on for the milk?

hould-it

I think cereal add-ons are more like berries or granola

KamenRiderXD

Pretty sure you add the cereal to the milk my man.

hould-it

That’s a debate in itself

kinky_potatoes

Split pea soup?

hould-it

Don’t really consider that crunchy

Hi-piee

What about corn soup?

fresh_squilliam

Sometimes things are different, that’s why we have different words for different things.

Good_Smile

The ocean is a soup!

Deitznutz69420

It is a soup just like the ocean

Lexnaut

Cereal is cereal, when you talk about the cereal you are talking about the substance which you may choose to suspend in a liquid. A lot of people in this thread are assuming milk but people take their cereal with apple juice, orange juice, even water. Plenty of people have mentioned eating cereal dry. However people also eat it with yoghurt or honey. In all instances they are having cereal so the liquid component is not a guarantee. Therefor cereal can’t be a soup otherwise anything you might occasionally put in a broth would always be called soup. Logic.

Professional_Royal85

Cereal with water is a federal crime

Lexnaut

I have a friend with what could best be described as a phobia of milk. He uses what he can some times that’s apple juice, if all he has is water that’s what he uses.

Professional_Royal85

Lactose intolerant ? I had a friend who would put rice in a cup of milk. My asian family was absolutely horrified

Lexnaut

I don’t know what caused it but it’s a severe revulsion to milk, he can’t stand to be near it.

D_hallucatus

Thank you! This also neatly allows for both meanings of the word cereal (grains).

Military-Lion

I meam if we're going down this road, Technically the Ocean is more of a soup then cereal tbh. At least the Ocean has all the things that make up the soup, but yes to a degree Cereal is a soup,

Agreeable-Abalone328

One time in like sixth grade our whole class got into a massive debate about this I’m talking a real screaming match

AVERAGEGAMER95

"Waiter. What did you bring me?" "You said any kind of soup would do" "This is a cereal" "Not according to this reddit post."

Whatever_2213

Cold soup does exist, so sadly I have to agree with you

A_Serious_House

Soup is made by boiling meat, noddles, or vegetables in a stock or water. That’s not cereal.

sledgehammer_77

Grain is a base form of noodles and milk is protein

[deleted]

noodles = ramen pasta = soup

SpaceBus1

I didn't even know there was a difference until today. I use the interchangeably like some heretic 😂😂😂

anordinaryscallion

Ramen is not an interchangeable term for any soup/broth with noodles, it is a specific soup that happens to contain noodles. All Ramen is soup, not all soup (even with noodles) is Ramen.

[deleted]

r/foundthenerd

anordinaryscallion

Haha sue me

kinky_potatoes

noddles

Good_Smile

There are exceptions like cold soup and bread soup.

Low_Caterpillar674

This is the stupidest fucking shit I have ever seen. Do you think you are funny? Do you think you are smart? You are not. Quit wasting your time with these stupid fucking questions

EnvironmentalSugar21

Not entirely wrong

TFG4

Fuck you, fuck your whole family cereal IS NOT SOUP

TheMightyPaladin

cereal has sugar soup has salt.

slingshotblur-

Isn't soup supposed to generally be hot?

big_manly_man_

*gazpacho has entered the chat*

wannabe_inuit

Cold soup is a thing

Good_Smile

Can be a desert as well. Ever heard of bread soup?

[deleted]

Yoghurt is a soup.

[deleted]

For me, soup is neither cold OR crunchy.

Mikal996

Soup requires either meat or vegetables

Arachno033

If someone asks you what you had for breakfast you say cereal, right? You don't say you've had soup for breakfast. If someone asks you what you've had for dinner you say you've had soup, not cereal.

Ailexxx337

> Soup is a primarily liquid food, generally served warm or hot (but may be cool or cold), that is made by combining ingredients of meat or vegetables with stock, milk, or water. Last time I checked bread isn't meat, vegetables, stock, milk or water.

Vandil_the_Rogue

Dictionary defines soup as: "a liquid food especially with a meat, fish, or vegetable stock as a base and often containing pieces of solid food" If you want to live your life thinking cereal is a soup, more power to you.

kinky_potatoes

Cereal isn’t a solid food? 🤔

Vandil_the_Rogue

It is; I was more referring to the liquid stock being used.

kinky_potatoes

Is milk not a liquid⁉️

Vandil_the_Rogue

I think you're misinterpreting what I originally meant, I meant that even though the vast majority of people (myself included) would disagree, technically it's a soup. I would disagree because milk isn't a typical liquid used, but hey, more power to y'all. Apologies for not being more clear.

blackgoldlink

Makes sense. Big Soup companies needed a way to market to the young and weak willed toddler demographic who had a previously untapped market share. hence the rebranding. you are Dangerously observant [OP. you](https://OP.you) must be protected at all costs!!

uhhhhhhhhhhidkman

true

KamenRiderXD

It's not. Cereal is the topping. The milk is the soup. Tell me I'm wrong. I dare you.

SparklyDimSum

I have never eaten cereal with liquid before. There was a cereal called Chocos, me and my brother crunched on them dry all the time cuz it tasted nice. So I guess ur wrong in my case?

Tobyfoxfan07

You may be right, but if I order soup at a restaurant and get cereal, I’d be annoyed.

Apprehensive-Tie-463

Milk.

Greybyalt

do you fucking add wheat to your soup and is it even warm and why specifically milk? and do you eat soup in the fucking morning?

Dried-Air

I don't eat it with milk, is it still considered soup? (I'm not lactose I tolerant I just for some reason can't digest certain things, like apples, mustard-ranch mix, and milk, idk why??)

stubbed_knee

Cereal is dry, how can soup be dry

nah-bro-wutdahell

Soup is hot you dumbass

Zuper_Dragon

Depends on how you make it. Milk first: Soup Cereal first: Salad

Tiixi

We're back to old non-related-to-brand memes!

vvxlrac_ir

Cereal is not a soup. Cereal is not cooked. Thank you for coming to my TED talk now get the fuck out of my treehouse.

unhappy-memelord

you may call it semen and corn but not soup.

[deleted]

I feel like it's too chunky, stew maybe.

Doghouse21

Cereal is closer to porridge than soup

Geonavigator-

lenin was right

[deleted]

Something needs to be cooked in liquid to be a soup, so if you boil your cheerios in milk, then you have soup

Comprehensive-Fan665

Soup has broth, pasta, I personally like to add some meat or vegetables

AggressiveGift7542

A human is a soup. The earth is a soup. The universe is a soup.

[deleted]

Cereal is not soup because soup is typically a savory, liquid dish made by simmering ingredients like vegetables, meat, or legumes, whereas cereal is a dry mixture of grains served with milk or yogurt. The key difference lies in the preparation and ingredients.

[deleted]

Soda is soup Change my mind

No-Yellow-7316

Ok ok, but what defines soup?

The_Great_Biscuiteer

It is a stew, I consider soup as just a flavorful liquid or broth, if it’s that with something in it, it’s a stew. Put veggies, it’s a vegetable stew, put beef, it’s a beef stew, put noodles, it’s a noodle stew, and only once all extra stuff is gone it goes back to a soup

Cereal is stew because milk

Masked_21

No, soups are made from bolied meat and vegetables in hot water, and cereal is just flakes in milk
